  1. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 12:23 AM) Help make the first 5 or 6 weeks of this baseball season awful for me. oh ok, yeah he did that for me too
  2. QUOTE (retro1983hat @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 11:32 PM) I have been really into poker for about 10 years now, but I am glad the craze has eased up a bit and they are not just showing every event. I feel the super top tier guys like Hellmuth, Chan, Ngyuen, Brunson, Lederer and Annie Duke have basically made their money in the last 5 years by simply playing in tourneys where they are guaranteed money like the ones on the Travel Channel. I like the WSOP because it's a buy in and no guarantee of $. That being said, the amatuers and online players have killed the skill players by playing hands like 2-7 and then flopping 2-2-7. That's actually something Negreanu or Hansen will do quite a bit. Play as many hands as you can, because if you are the best player on the table, you will win the majority of the time you put money into the pot.
  3. WHAT DID BRENT LILLIBRIDGE EVER DO TO YOU?
  4. QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 12:31 PM) he sniffs and whispers yeah that's pretty f***ing weird
  5. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 07:53 PM) Nick Swisher is a terrible baseball player. I'm so tired of the OBP and OPS argument... Guess what, bottom of the 9th, runner on 2nd, 2 outs, down by 1. You don't need a walk or strikeout. You need a basehit. QFT if you have a guy like Swisher, or even Adam Dunn in the lineup, that situation does not occur nearly as much. If player A hits a solo homer in the 5th inning to put his team up 4-3, that's the exact same result as him hitting a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th to win 4-3 as well. In the end, OPS has become the easiest statistic to look at in regards to not only player success, but also team success too. Batting average has become virtually meaningless because of it, thanks in huge part to slugging percentage (which is quite honestly a much better version of batting average)
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 03:37 AM) Just what we need, Josh Barfield or Andy Marte! sarcastic or not, if the Sox got Barfield or Marte for Jimmy f***ing Gobble, KW immediately wins GM of the decade
  7. you trade Gobble to Cleveland instantly. It's not like he's good. If anything, trading him to Cleveland probably helps the Sox win a couple more games this season
  8. QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 07:02 AM) as sad as it is for Anderson, i think Wise adds more to the team. He is a lefty off the bench and can steal some bases. I think they are about the same defensively with Anderson having the edge while Wise is probably more of a threat to make soemthing happen at the plate. I think Anderson knows he going down when Quentin comes back. It's just something in hise demeanor lately that makes me think that. Ozzie had Wise starting over BA to start the year and BA has done nothing to wrest the job from him so i don't see how, if it comes down to those 2, that Ozzie keeps Anderson over Wise. You lost me at same defensively. I honestly don't understand the idea of Anderson being sent down. If there's a lefty starting, Nix is playing at 2B which gives you Getz off the bench (he's no power hitter, but he's left handed). If a righty is starting and a lefty comes in, they assuredly aren't coming in to get Getz out alone, and even if they did, you could bring Anderson or Nix to face said lefty at that point. It's nice to have that power off the bench, but I think you go with defense, seeing as how the defense is weak as it is and Quentin's return isn't going to make it stronger.
  9. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 06:58 PM) This year was Grienke's CY Young to lose, and so far now, he seems to not want it. Makes you think how incredible Cliff Lee's season was in his Cy Young year. I don't even think he had as many bad outings the whole year as Greinke so far. Zach Greinke has started 18 games this year and has 16 quality starts. If a bad outing is suddenly become up a 6 IP, 3 ER outing, then the rest of the majors must be pretty bad. FWIW, Cliff Lee had 8 non-QS last year, and by this point last year, had 4. Greinke is pitching better than Lee did last season.
  10. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 09:46 AM) Do we know for sure that the Jays don't HAVE to move Halladay for budgetary purposes as well? They're averaging 22,800 per game (25th in the majors) in a city that doesn't really care about baseball and are paying B.J. Ryan $12 million this year to suck. They released Ryan today (yesterday, whatevs). Ricciardi has also publicly come out and said that he will not deal Halladay unless he is blown away (not in those words, but that's what he was saying). That tells me that they aren't struggling for cash at the current moment, or that Halladay is a huge attraction and if they dealt him, they'd probably lose 2,000 or more fans a game. He's only signed through next year anyways, so he's not a huge financial burden upon the franchise like Peavy is in San Diego. If anything, they'd be looking to unload a couple others for much, much cheaper. Hell, they'd probably give Vernon Wells away for practically free right now. Anyways, giving up Alexei or Floyd or Danks would be brutal for the MLB team. KW won't hurt the MLB team's chances by acquiring someone; I have never seen him make a move like that in his career. If KW is to acquire Halladay, it would be none of those 3 going, and no one major. If they are going by the one MLB ready pitching prospect, one (near) MLB ready offensive prospect, and one other good prospect, you'd be looking at a package similar to something ike Poreda, Flowers/Jordan Danks, and Hudson. I personally don't think that's enough for a guy like Halladay, and I think you would have to include Richard in that too, but Toronto has quite a few lefties too. Romero should be an All-Star, Rzepczynski pitched well in his debut and is a solid prospect, and I imagine Cecil is a solid prospect as well (though I haven't read up on him, I figure he's probably in the Richard/Poreda category of some type, be it a semi-polished pitcher who will be a #3-4 in his career, or a boom or bust type of guy who is either a #2 or better, a dynamite reliever, or AAA fodder. Perhaps he's better, I really don't know). I believe the White Sox have enough prospects to make such a move. Whether it is wise for the short and long term is something Williams and company will decide. I personally do not believe they will make a move for Halladay unless he is still a Blue Jay come around July 28 (give or take) AND Danks, Floyd, Buehrle, or Contreras take a monstrous s*** or get hurt. Those 4 are pitching fantastically now and, unless they don't keep it up, I personally don't understand the need to trade off the immediate future, whoever it may be, for a year and a half rent-a-pitcher. I imagine KW feels the same way.
  11. I get real shaken up over big athletes that die unexpectedly. I once shed tears over Sean Taylor's passing - given, I was so drunk that I had puked that night - but I still didn't understand why a guy who was cleaning up his life had to go like that. The biggest one that will get me is Frank. I'll get depressed when a few others from this past baseball generation go, even the steroid users, but I don't think any athlete's is going to hit me has hard as Frank's. He's the reason I'm on this board right now.
  12. QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 12:01 AM) Just like the lame angle of race that you just used? Personally I know white, latin & asian people as well as black people who believe the same. The fact that these parents were fine with just taking some money in a settlement should raise a flag...if it's my kid, I want that f***er in jail. Period. Also, when stories come out about someone molesting them, more people come out & say so. You mean to tell me that if he had all of these kids in his house, that he only molested 2? Give me a f***in' break. That's like saying a serial killer only kills one person or a guy who collects sneakers only has 2 pairs of Air Jordans. Sounds like sometimes white people blindly defend their opinions too... Which sounds better to you, a mentally and emotionally disturbed child with no extra money to pay for treatment to help said child figure out his life while Michael Jackson sits in jail, or a mentally and emotionally disturbed child with $15 million to help in the psychological treatment of said child which would leave enough left over for even the most unselfless of people's early retirement while Jackson walks free on the street? Jackson was an incredible musical talent, but I would be very surprised if people wouldn't take $15 mill over him staying in jail. He made fantastic music, he was a very messed up man, people should mourn his loss just as much as they mourn anybody else's (if you are to take the good with the bad, I'd say Jackson comes out ahead but not by this much), and then move on. He's gone. RIP.
  13. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 07:01 PM) If you thought the name of this thread was hard to believe, imagine this title: Andy Gonzalez takes the roster spot of Hanley Ramirez. If it had "Slugger Andy Gonzalez..." I would have felt it more worthy. The only guy on the 2007 White Sox worthy of an F+
  14. QUOTE (qwerty @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 05:45 AM) Andruw jones homered three times last night which raised his ops .066 points... it now stands at .929. Out of any players with over 150 plate appearances he is tied for the second best ab/hr rate in the majors. Pujols is first with a homerun once out of every 9.3 at-bats, and then jones and ibanez are tied at 11.4. Not too shabby for someone the majority of people thought was all but done Playing in Texas helps, but I think this helps Rudy Jaramillo's case as the best hitting coach in the MLB.
  15. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 04:03 AM) I'm still angry we traded Rowand to give this bum the CF job... QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 04:31 AM) Thome has added far more to the offense than the difference between Rowand and Anderson, IMHO. I would still make that trade again if presented with the opportunity. Seriously, how else was Thome supposed to be acquired? If anything, people should b**** about trading Chris Young, but we've been down that path and he's pretty much the same player as Brian Anderson right now. Anyways, Anderson should be kept over Wise, but I don't think Anderson has much of a future with the Sox at this point. I'm as big of an Anderson fan as there is, but that's the way I see it. Anderson still has value around the league, but it's very low and it's as a 4th outfielder with the potential to start at some point in the next two years.
  16. I believe Colon was actually an extra on the set of "Eat it" by Weird Al. Colon heard the beat and didn't understand English well enough to realize that it was not Michael's version. /love fat jokes
  17. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 03:46 PM) We got a #2 starter for Reed. For Allen, we got a guy who looks to be the 6th or 7th best thing in our bullpen. That's as of right now, because the Sox have a pretty damn good bullpen. As of this moment, I'd rank Jenks, Thornton, Dotel, and Linebrink above him. I'd say he falls into the 6th inning short reliever role and a guy who can fill in for Linebrink and Dotel when they are tired; a guy like Carrasco is a 6th inning long reliever role, where he can go 2 innings or more if need be and you really don't want to count on him for much else unless you are forced into it. The Sox bullpen right now is very versatile and has very capable arms. It's similar to the 2007 philosophy of finding guys who can throw the ball hard, but now the Sox have guys who can locate and have decent to good breaking stuff too, and the results have been much improved. I could also very easily see Pena working into a setup role a couple years down the road too. It isn't exactly what I would have looked for if I were to trade Brandon Allen, but I'm sitting in a computer chair. Ken Williams and company felt that this was a great value for Allen, and I'm not going to disagree with them because there is some merits behind the trade.
  18. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 07:20 PM) LOL at what some people think it would take to get Halladay. Look at what the Twins got for Santana. The only MLB ready player that got was Gomez, and everyone knew he was extremely raw. All this talk about Floyd or Danks needing to be a part of the deal is just silly. If the Blue Jays are expecting them back in a return, they weren't serious about trading Halladay in the first place. The Twins dealing Santana is a completely different scenario to the Jays moving Halladay. The Twins HAD to move Santana for budgetary purposes and because you can't merely get two compensatory selections for a player of that quality. The Blue Jays don't have to do a damn thing, if the best package on the table doesn't suit what they want, they can hang up the phone and let Doc keep on pitching.
  19. On the bright side, the Sox bullpen is definitely the best in the AL Central (it was before, but just got stronger) and it might be the best bullpen in the AL. If games become 6 or 7 inning affairs, the Sox are going to win a lot more games.
  20. hey, don't post any links in which I appear. I had not met Mr. Anheuser at that point, so I had no idea what life meant. I feel like a moron looking at those posts.
  21. QUOTE (stretchstretch @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 06:11 PM) ESPN/Sportscenter is single handedly to blame for what we see in the All Star games these days. It's their choice of coverage and over dramatization of certain teams and personas that is causing kids across the US (and some adults as well) to vote in favor of a 260avg jason bay, or 200 avg Veritek over those with actual AllStar numbers (who have to rely on player and coach voting). as a die hard fan of a team on the outside of their circle this is beyond infuriating. I can remember when the voting was still fan based at the parks, and the punch cards at least came with a summary of the guys key stats for some reference. The sponsor laden online voting now doesn't even list a single number for a "fan" to reference....and that's just the way they want it..... disgusting ESPN always argues, eg on Colin Cowherd's show, that they just give the people what they want to see, I would vigourously counter that they've successfully swayed people to take innterest in their interests, to the point now where a historically unsuccessful team like Boston now has the same unlimited funds to buy any free angent they want, and risk losing quality free agents to only the one team richer than they are.... a lot of Boston being unsuccessful was due to poor execution. From 1967 to today, and not counting the strike years of '81 and '94, the Red Sox have won fewer than 78 games one time. To put that into another form, the Red Sox have won atleast 78 games in 41 of the past 42 seasons. That's absolutely incredible. In the 3 seasons from '77-'79, they won 287 games, an average of just under 96 wins a season, and didn't make the playoffs once. The Red Sox have always been a pretty good organization, and they've become the best organization in the majors within the past 5 seasons. Having money as they do (though they do their best to stay under the luxury tax cap) doesn't hurt.
  22. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 11:29 AM) I still think we took the better route with Gordon Beckham. You can find power hitting 1B a lot more easily than a .300 hitting middle infielder. well, .300 hitting middle infielders are actually pretty common. It's the one that can put up 40 doubles, 25 homers, and .900 (or so) OPS's that are a bit harder to find.
  23. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 09:09 AM) We are putting much faith in your ability to bring the quality up. You have not disappointed I have been trying to find just a regular old kite to fly with my daughter, and I have been to Walmart, Target, and Toysrus with no luck(I am not counting the cheap Transformers and Starwars kites, nor the Airhog motorized kites), I just checked the hobby lobby page and they do not list kites, so I am now wondering if it is possible to find a normal kite somewhere. I have nothing to offer, but funny story...I was actually scared s***less of flying kites when I was a kid. I was always afraid they would fly away and I'd never see them again (that was huge...I like slept with my kite and had tea parties with it, it was a good friend of mine or something) or I'd get sucked up by the wind. I'm a damn goof.
  24. I was like 15 and I swore a lot because you couldn't swear on the MLB boards. So I basically just said "hey guys, f*** YOU, that's neat, well, see ya"
