Sox had best returns on draft picks from 1989-1993
witesoxfan replied to maggsmaggs's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 02:30 AM) The reason the Sox got so much out of their 1987-1990 drafts was that they sucked soooo bad from '86 to '89 in order to get those picks. Comiskey averaged under 4,000 people some nights while their best pitcher of 1989 won 11 games and finished under .500. 1986 - 72-90 got Jack McDowell #5 1987 - 77-85 got Robin Ventura #10 1988 - 71-90 got Frank Thomas #7 1989 - 69-92 got Alex Fernandez #4 You are going to be hard-pressed to find any team that can have that kind of luck with 4 straight top 10 draft picks. Jack McDowell won a Cy Young and 91 games with the Sox in 7 seasons, Robin Ventura was a top 5 or 10 3Bman of the past 25 years, Frank Thomas is one of the greatest hitters of all time, and Alex Fernandez was incredible until shoulder troubles ruined his career. The Pirates have had top 10 draft picks for years, and they haven't produced a player even close to that caliber yet. Since 1994 and excluding anything after 2006 (thats 12 first round picks), the Pirates have picked past 15th twice (1998 and 2000) and have had seven top 10 picks. Those top 10 picks were Chad Hermanson, Kris Benson, JJ Davis, Bobby Bradley, John Van Benschoten, Bryan Bullington, and Paul Maholm. The jury is still out on Alvarez, Moskos, and Lincoln, which is why they were not included, but I can almost guarantee that none of them can replicate their counterpart (Moskos and Lincoln to Fernandez and McDowell, and Alvarez to either Ventura or Thomas). -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 12:50 AM) It's bad because you're deluded into thinking you're a contender when you're really not. The last true contending team we had was in 2006. That doesn't even begin to register with me. They won the division last year, how is that not a "true contending team?"

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 7, 2009 -> 05:13 PM) Lets overslot like with Kenny's worthless kid last year! That pick in many draft circles was rated worst pick of entire 2008 draft! and it was one f***ing pick in a crapshoot of a draft. They also had one of the best picks in the entire draft in Jordan Danks, and he could very well open the year in the majors next year in CF for the Sox. I don't see you giving them credit there.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 7, 2009 -> 11:09 PM) If this organization could try to turn Sergio Santos into a pitcher, they can sure as hell try to make JVB back into a hitter. I'm just saying... His injuries have ruined his shoulders, I'm not sure he can really swing a bat that well anymore.

I have never actually felt as though I was ever satisfying a nicotine craving with hookah smoke. Not sure why. I may look for other alternatives. I might not. I'll just have to see.
-
I am currently in the process of quitting smoking, so I think hookah is going to be a life saver for me when I get to college. Not that is really helps for cravings, but being able to smoke anything helps it a lot. That, and it is pretty fun. I get bored with it pretty easily, but it's nice to just sit around and hang out.

one losing streak and the team should sell...one winning period, and the team is going to be in first place by the end of the home stand (first stated by Dick Allen, agreed upon by many, so I have no ill-will in that as I either agreed or had no problem with the prediction)...another 4 game losing streak, and half hearted, though slightly serious remarks towards the 2010 draft. Jesus f***. Let the season play out.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 5, 2009 -> 09:47 PM) Swinging at 3 pitches in 3 at bats is the definition of cockiness. I knew we should have taken Smoak. The worst part of this is that it means the other guys at Birmingham also suck, as Beckham was the best of the bunch. I believe this post fits in with the rest of the thread, whether it was your intentions or not.

QUOTE (BearSox @ May 31, 2009 -> 08:24 PM) Oh, because I've been so wrong many times before. Please list all times I've been wrong. Original Nick Swisher trade... oh wait, nailed that one. Gio Gonzalez? How has he been? How has DLS been since the surgery? oh and .246/.313/.319/.632 still 2 homers, still 8 doubles, still 4 of 6 in stolen bases...and UPDATED again BTW, his career line of .266/.328/.353/.681 smells like Sean Burroughs...even though Sean Burroughs could get on base

It seems to me that the Sox hit right handers that throw good fastballs and have either 1 good pitch after that or an assorted number of mediocre pitches (#3-4 starters/potential starters, middle relievers, mediocre closers) or junk left handers that can throw it 91 MPH with any number of assorted offerings (though they hit them worse than they do the right handers). In essence, what I'm strictly trying to say is that they hit guys that throw anywhere from 92-97 pretty well with mediocre breaking stuff. Is that a generally good statement? Because if it is, then that's why the A's and Jays shut the Sox down on a regular basis...both teams feature guys that either have two plus pitches or have a variety of pitches. There is absolutely a mental issue too, but I'm no psychologist.

I tried to have sex tonight. All I could think of was Beckham's 0 for 3. Now I don't have a girlfriend.

How did Nate McLouth end up in Atlanta and not here?
witesoxfan replied to VAfan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
If you wanted a comparable package, on possibly the low-end, it's probably something along the lines of Poreda, Shelby, and Hudson. Just gonna throw that out there. -
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 05:30 PM) Laynce Nix seems to be really coming into his own in Cincinnati, really hitting the ball well. Also, big fan of Ian Stewart Saw him for the first time in a while yesterday, and he's got a really nice approach at bat and has a nice swing with some serious pop. Just looked his mlb page and looked at his highlights, and man, he hits the ball hard. However, the question is when he hits it, and he's batting below .200 right now, and still K's a lot. I'd love to get him if the Rockies give up on him after this year and decide to trade him. However, I severly doubt they'll give up on him after a rough first quarter to his first year playing in the majoirty of the games in the bigs. Sounds like a certain someone I already know of... QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Jun 5, 2009 -> 03:34 AM) Yeah I couldnt believe the Rockies werent playing Stewart everyday and actually giving Clint Barmes more playing time. I havent been paying attention since they fired Clint Hurdle though, maybe the new manager has some sense in him. But Stewart would definitely be a guy I'd love to see starting for the whitesox at 3B next season if it was reasonable. and his names rhymes with wields... It makes sense for the Rockies to stick with Stewart. It does not make sense for the Sox to stick with...whats his name now?

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 08:19 PM) Thoroughly unimpressed with what I saw from Moss when the Pirates came to town. He played 3 games in Chicago (if that...I'm not bothering to look at if he actually played all 3 games or not cuz I'm drunk). Yet... QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 11:05 PM) McLouth is alright out there, and that's good enough considering his bat. ...how many times, exactly, have you seen McLouth play CF? Because, according to Bill James' statistics, he was the WORST CF in the majors last year. If you base everything off 3 games, Mike Morse must be the next Albert Pujols! my bad, that's more than 3 games. Now a game called "Guess who" #1 - AA - .271/.335/.385/.720 #2 - AA - .308/.383/.648/1.031 if you guessed Hanley Ramirez for #1, you are correct! if you guessed Brandon Berger for #2, you are correct! Minor league numbers are nothing but helpful indicators for major league scouts of whether the player is ready to play in the majors. Hanley Ramirez has never touched AAA pitching. Wonder if Florida's scouting is good or bad? This is more of a general statement in regards to actual baseball players. Berger was a guy who could catch up to a 95 MPH fastball or any mediocre breaking pitch a young AA pitcher was working on, while Hanley was always good at it, but perhaps became bored or tired of facing the same type of stuff after a while (afterall, he did have 658 plate appearances against AA pitching and absolutely 0 against AAA pitching). If the Pittsburgh organization, under Huntington, feel that McCutcheon is ready, regardless of the statistics he has put up (but worthwhile noting them), they will make that trade, because Morton has very good stuff, but has never put up results, and he gets two top 10 prospects in the process, all the while trading a CF who is, as previously mentioned, a terrible STATISTICAL defensive CFer in McLouth while he has his own Granderson/Maybin/Upton/nameyourbust in the wings. It's not like the Pirates are going to be good this year, and they get a package where they can get 3 players who can be on the major league roster 3 or 4 years from now who can contribute, along with giving McCutcheon playing time. I see no problem with this move from them. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 09:59 AM) McLouth wasn't the greatest player, but he was the Pirates best player, and they traded him for practically nothing. And now their replacing him with a rookie who has a career .285 BA in the minors and doesn't hit for much power, and will likely have a bad K:BB ratio in the majors. The Pirates are still a joke of an organization. I would say Freddy Sanchez is their best player. The rest has been covered above. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 10:31 AM) I'm looking at the minor league numbers, and they aren't crap. Morton could be decent, as he has done good in AAA, but then again, before he hit AAA, he got hit good in all his previous stops and had an ERA of over 6 in the majors. Could go either way, depending on if he just figured out minor league hitters, or if he's figured it out altogether. Jeff Locke has had 1 good year in the minors, but other than that, he has sucked and his peripherals are terrible. Hernandez might hit for a high average, but he doesn't walk a lot, and has really no power. He's the best prospect the Pirates got back in return, and he isn't all that great of a prospect, IMO. You don't trade your best player for a mediocre group of prospects. If that is how in-depth you look into the minor leagues - by the looks of it, you are looking at ERAs close to 4 and then looking at periphs - you should probably look closer. He's struggled with control this season, but he's struck out damn near 1 per inning (8.5 K/9), and he's allowed ONE home run in 45.2 IP. I will personally challenge you two find 5 lefties, from AA and below, who have put up a K/9 of 8+ and a HR/9 of 1 (let alone the 0.2 HR/9 Locke has allowed). Gorkys Hernandez is on pace to walk 40 times in a 120 game season, which roughly translates 54 walks in the regular season. The only thing, as far as I am concerned, that would keep Gorkys out of the majors (and the only thing that keeps Danks from becoming a star) is the strikeout percentage. He's striking out almost once per game...if he can make better contact, he is going to make it, whether as a 4th outfielder or a starter of some type. I am not as high on Gorkys Hernandez as some, but he has the potential to be a damn good #1 or #2 hitter, and all of it depends on how his power develops. Overall, I'm very happy with this trade for the Pirates...they get 3 legitimate prospects, all of whom have question marks, but they also open up a spot for McCutcheon. 3 years from now, this is either going to look like a terrible mistake for either team, or, what I believe is going to look like a win, but just that, for the Pirates. I don't care for Morton nor Hernandez, but, though I don't know what Locke throws, he's a guy I like for the Pirates and a guy I think could spend a while in their rotation. If Hernandez can get that doubles power I mentioned previously, he's a leadoff hitter and a guy you have to have in your lineup. If Morton can figure it out, he's a #2-3 for the Pirates. I don't see Morton doing that, and Gorkys is too young to draw conclusions, as he has time to grow into his body a bit and add a bit more power. Funny comparison I found though... (Gorkys 21 AA (thru whatever date BR has up) - .071 IsoSLG; Jerry Owens 24 AA .075 IsoSLG)

dude, give it atleast another half a game before you give up on him. He hit like 600 in AAA1!!1!1!!!!one!!1!!eleventy

Dewayne Wise is a better defensive CFer than Nate McClouth (atleast in regards to what he did last year). Take that into consideration.

I think the White Sox should sign Robin Ventura for one game too and let him play in front of the fans. f*** it, put Ozzie and Joey out there too. I don't have to see him play again, he'd go 0 for f***in 4 anyways. If I see him one last time in a Sox uniform, I'd cream in my panties. -
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 04:38 PM) My heart says 9-3. My head says 7-5. My pancreas says 8-4. You must have a very agreeable pancreas, because not only does it find middle ground between head and heart, but a lot of others are saying 8-4 too. And I agree with it as well. 8-4 seems very realistic.

As Thunderbolt got at, Thome's always been a great hitter, and great hitters are usually clutch. Thome's been doing this for a while. 500 was a walk-off, 550 was a game winning 3 run homer, what's he going to do with 600?
