Jim Thome's M.O. for his entire career has been walk, homer, or strike out. 47% of the hits Jim Thome has had in his career have gone for extra bases, and I don't know why that would suddenly change when he's 38. It's not disturbing at all.

QUOTE (ObamaKnowsBest @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 11:34 PM) There's a difference between riding out the season with Pods and hoping for him to carry the team into the future. I'm just saying he should not be traded. The same people who say we shouldn't count on Pods next year were the ones laughing when we signed him to a minor league contract. Truth is we don't know and I wish some people would admit that more often. I have admitted I was wrong about Podsednik, he's been a huge blessing. That doesn't mean you should count on him next year when prior to this season, he had put up a .256/.322/.353/.675 line in his previous 1008 plate appearances. If the Sox fall out of it in the next month or so, he should be gone. If they don't, he should be kept. It's pretty simple.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 03:06 PM) LOL. I like the way you think. But the Reds wouldn't even consider giving up anything close to that much for two guys on the wrong side of 30, who they'd only have control of for 2-3 months. Seriously. Although there were rumors, I don't think they would have given up Bailey for Dye in the offseason, and I'm not sure why they'd add two extra prospects for Dotel.

Anybody counting on anything from Podsednik beyond this year is foolish. I think even the front office knows that. I could still see him being brought back, but they better have a good alternative in mind if they do. Also, this team is starting to turn into something fun. I'm happy. And Gavin Floyd's ERA down to 4.12, and I was never worried. Gavin's good.

Ben Zobrist is on pace for like 70 XBHs. Ben Zobrist. WTF

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 28, 2009 -> 10:21 PM) f***, I really wished we traded for Jackson when I was clamoring for us to get him. The Sox did not have a player who is comparable to Matt Joyce to trade. He's a young outfielder who is very cheap that hits right handed pitching very well. That doesn't sound like anyone I can really think of in the White Sox system.

Potential teams that could come calling
witesoxfan replied to Princess Dye's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 12:38 PM) He has returned to his norm and that is being a good lead off hitter with good speed. Why are we talking about trading our good players again. We are contenders. That last part is the most important phrase right now. This team is one game under .500 and 5 games out and they've been without Quentin pretty much all year (and may end up being without him all year). They have played much better baseball in about the past month or so. You keep this team together until the point comes to break it apart. -
Official 2009-2010 NFL Thread

QUOTE (T R U @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 12:47 AM) The point being was that he wasnt just slapped on the ass and told to go back to Cleveland.. Either way, the dude he hit was J walking which im sure was part of this lightened load.. also, I agree with that family just wanting to money. It doesn't make it easier for the family (other than the money, which only helps so much), and it's not impossible to avoid a jaywalker, but seriously, in a major city on, what I imagine (though I do not recall the street nor how busy it is) is a busy street, jaywalking is a big deal. Had Stallworth been sober, nothing would have come of this; you would have heard he ran into and killed a man jaywalking, found he was sober and the accident was unavoidable, and he is still getting a fat contract. And, to be quite frank, a .12 is, give or take, 2-3 more beers over what you should drink while still being legal to drive. And, one further point, you can feel pretty f***ing sober at .12. I have had 10 beers in a matter of 2-3 hours, felt about how I did when I started (other than a bit more social) and not realized I had drank 10 beers simply because I didn't really notice it. Not that I condone what Stallworth did - the absolute only time I drive after I have drank anything is 1-2 beers or a bit after I wake up (anywhere from noon to 3) when I need to be somewhere ASAP and it is a short distance (and that is wrong too) - but he is going to get a bad reputation for a mistake I'd say 99% of Americans who drink have made in their lives, and I'd say more than 50% make on a regular basis. I personally would say that, with all the other consequences, other than the 30 days in jail, that Stallworth has been treated almost a bit harsh. -
If Pods gets recalled, will Fields change his #?
witesoxfan replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Any Sox fan that said that Podsednik was going to be the biggest Sox surprise heading into the ASB prior the Opening Day wins a huge pat on the back from me. That is one free agent signing that I never saw playing out nearly as well as it did. I almost hope he tails off some by the end of the season so Ozzie doesn't grow too attached and that KW doesn't have some type of inclination to resign him at the end of the season. Maybe that wouldn't be so bad though. Kenny Lofton reinvented himself a bit at about 36 years old, it's not impossible for Podsednik to do the same at 33. He's not nearly as talented, but they are semi-similar type of players. -
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 01:15 PM) Steroids do not give him a better batting eye. Steroids do not give him better place discipline. Steroids do not make his swing perfect and virtually hole-less You explain the success of Sammy Sosa (1998-2003) and Barry Bonds (2001-2004) and why their walk totals are so high. One theory is that steroids do not improve your eye but rather that the power from your bat does.

Frank Thomas "95% certain" he's retiring...
witesoxfan replied to Greg Hibbard's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 27, 2009 -> 12:26 AM) Honestly, especially if we are sucking and need to sell tickets, I wouldn't mind signing Thomas and letting him get a few AB's during September. Let him go out as he came in, as a White Sock. I have absolutely no problem signing Thomas in September to give him a mini-farewell tour. Let him play on the last homestand of the year. Of course, the opens the possibility of him actually hurting himself on that tour, but I think unless he was in absolute agony, he'd play through it seeing as how he wouldn't ever play at the MLB level again. -
QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jun 26, 2009 -> 12:48 PM) FWIW, I put up a thread essentially giving Gavin props. I still don't understand how a guy can have a 7+ era for two months and then have a 1 era for the third. I'm also not sold that he's not the Rex Grossman of baseball, an extremely high variance headcase. He just has a tendency to leave balls up and out over the middle of the plate for several starts. When your 4-seamer tops out at maybe 94, those balls are going to get hit very hard.

omg the team is selling away pieces left and right, PACK IT IN

Holy crip it works with Firefox too

I actually wonder whether or not KW and therefore Ozzie are afraid to use Poreda in a key situation because they want him to put up some inflated numbers pitching in garbage time, raising his trade value. Anyways, all I see Ozzie saying in this is that Alexei needs to step his s*** up. He has big expectations for him, and he's not living up to them yet. Alexei's never going to be as good as Ozzie was defensively, but he can probably be an average shortstop.
-
QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Jun 15, 2009 -> 04:24 PM) Hineybird just ripped Ozzie for this on ATH. He stated Ozzie's act of saying this every year is getting "stale". The host asked him if he was going to say that to Ozzie's face and Hineybird said yes, if Ozzie would come pay him a visit. I hope Ozzie does just that. It's not Ozzie's job to talk to reporters, it's the reporters job to talk to Ozzie. Jay whatshisname is one of the worst, and the dude can't handle any criticism he receives.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jun 16, 2009 -> 03:56 AM) Good points. Hell you can add the Otsuka deal (wound up tearing up his arm) the Buchholz deal, and in a way, the Bailey deal this past offseason. Though I gotta say that near Pence deal hurts. (forgot which player rejected it) No player could have rejected the Pence deal - Purpura never let it happen. KW asked for Taveras, Buccholz, Hirsh, and Pence for Garland. Purpura was willing to do the first three, but wouldn't include Pence. He then traded the first three for Jennings.
-
This is definitely not the best trade that did not happen. Erstad in 02, Griffey in 05, and Soriano in 06 all would have sucked a big one.
-
For all the flak Fukudome gets, he's put up a .368 OBP in 203 career games. He hasn't hit for power at all, but if he plays an adequate CF, he's a fine regular. Not worth the $15 mill a year he is getting, but a fine regular.
-
Every single team in the AL Central has a shot at winning the division still. The Sox just had a 4-8 homestand, won 2 of 3 against Milwaukee, and they are only 4.5 out. Cleveland has been absolutely devastated by injuries so far, and they are 6 out. It's anybody's race still.

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jun 14, 2009 -> 07:37 PM) A couple reasons. We still dont have someone with bat control doing everything necessary at that slot. Quentin, when here, was not reproducing last year. But he would be able to take walks and move the runner over. I know that's underusing him, but realistically we dont know where he's going to be at upon his return. And we wont have that long with him. When he left he was looking like an A's era Nick Swisher. all right then

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 14, 2009 -> 10:01 PM) I meant the games after the Toronto series. I phrased that badly. Yes you did. Two players hit their first career home runs in this game. Neither of them are Beckham or Getz.
-
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 14, 2009 -> 05:28 PM) Don't get your hopes up... A lot of us were feeling positive after that Toronto series. Also, we are facing an NL Team. There was no one feeling positive. No one ever feels positive after a 4-game sweep. Maybe after Minnesota, Pittsburgh, LAA, or KC. This team also plays pretty well on the road, which is weird. If they ever figure it out at home, they are going to be a very solid team.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 08:42 AM) Looks like Ahmadinejad "won." It was supposed to be close and he won in a complete blowout. Someone needs to get ACORN over to Iran and teach them how to properly fix elections (that one was for you mr. genius). dern right wait, what?
