Rosenthal: Melky Cabrera is on the block; Sox would be good fit
witesoxfan replied to DaTank's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 11:54 PM) I think that right now would be a great time to buy low on Cabrera. He's only 24 so I doubt that he's peaked career wise. I think that we could dangle someone like Brent Morel to get Melky. We have too many 3B right now anyways with Morel, Fields, Viciedo, and another guy who's name escapes me right now. Not to mention Betemit, the Yanks certainly could use some backup for A-Rod The question has never been about whether the Sox should buy low on Cabrera - I think that's a resounding yes from pretty much everybody. The question has always been whether New York would sell low on Cabrera, and seeing as how he's 24, I doubt it. -
Wilson Betemit earning some attention?

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 10:05 PM) Betemit can play short, just not very well. If we put him out their once a week, it's not going to kill us, especially if he keeps hitting. Once a week is way too much. I understand the gist of what you are saying, but Alexei should be playing 150+ games at SS this season. -
It snowed like f'ing crazy up there this winter, and now they're feeling it. There's flooding all throughout, including Fargo and Bismarck, and I'm pretty sure I read where Obama said it was in a state of emergency. My house is in part of the possible flood zone, and though we have had none of it yet, my parents did receive a call at 9:30 this morning saying that there was mandatory evacuation. Turns out that was a false alarm, so they're still sitting OK as of right now, but I have no idea what is going to happen in the next week. They apparently blew up some of the ice jams that were along the river, and they believe everything went well, but there's still flooding in quite a few parts of southern Bismarck. I'll try and update this a bit. Keep Little Canada in your prayers.

Is Curt Schilling a hall of famer?
witesoxfan replied to WhiteSoxfan1986's topic in The Diamond Club
just so it's known, I'm only saying he's a Hall of Famer for his on-field performance. I think the dude's a complete douchebag and I still think that the bloody sock thing was a bit of a hoax. -

QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 04:06 PM) I'm thinking the Yankees would ask for something ridiculous like Poreda in return. If the Angels picked up like 80-90% of what's owed to Matthews for the remainder of that horrible deal, absolutely. Melky would never move then. Not that it matters much to the Yankees, just saying. Melky's pretty mediocre overall and he was absolutely awful last year. If he can be had for cheap, it's one thing, but otherwise, the Sox may as well stick with Anderson in CF. -
QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 02:22 PM) I'd say the problem was with the managing, not the quality of play. I was just gonna say, Davey Johnson managed that pretty poorly all around.

I would guess #1 is gymnastics or figure skating

I had an original XBox stop working on me. So I'd had it put away for about a week. I had a dream that I got up out of bed, hooked it up, and it worked. Lo and behold, I got up out of bed, pulled the XBox out, hooked it up, and it worked. Magic.

Is Curt Schilling a hall of famer?

QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 11:09 AM) Schilling and Johan are tough to compare right now because Johan is still in the prime of his career, but I originally threw him in the discussion because he's already so dominant. He's already won two Cy Young awards (compared to Schilling's zero). As for Mussina, I think he and Schilling are very comparable pitchers, and I personally see them as borderline HOF pitchers (probably on the outside looking in). The HOF is about about answering the question: is this player one of the best of all-time? I don't think Schilling is. Schilling and Johan are very easy to compare right now. One is 42, done with baseball, and he had a very accomplished career that spanned 20 years, 13 of which were very good, and 9 of those where he was outstanding. Johan has been one of the best pitchers in the league for 7 years, but that's it. That's nothing against Johan, and he could very well end up in the Hall, but he doesn't have the longevity nor the postseason dominance that Schilling does. Schilling also finished 2nd in Cy Young balloting three times, and it wasn't as if he wasn't a worthy candidate. In his two top 2 finishes in Arizona, Randy Johnson was freakishly good, and when he finished 2nd with Boston, Johan had a freakishly good year too. I personally don't think you can hold the Cy Young argument against Schilling. I don't think he's a first ballot Hall of Famer, but 4th-6th ballot seems about right, because he was absolutely one of the best pitchers of this generation. -
QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 11:35 AM) I know Swish was brutal last year but considering the other options we are left with,it was a mistake to get rid of him,I believe he would've had a good comeback year for us...he couldn't be worse than what he did last year... I'm on board with Dick Allen in saying that Swisher's contract, which once looked like a bargain, got a hell of a lot uglier after the season he had last year. Add to it that the Sox may not have had the money to sign Viciedo without dealing Swisher and that the Sox got decent value for him, and it made sense to go with in house options. I honestly wouldn't be surprised in the least if Anderson is a more valuable player (and he could be far more valuable) than Swisher this season.

I could very easily see Owens being out of the organization comes April 6th.

I think it's OK that TO isn't working out. per roto, through the AP -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 07:34 AM) It'll be Jerry Owens hopefully. I'm hoping he's leading off for a AAA team in a city other than Charlotte.

Is Curt Schilling a hall of famer?
witesoxfan replied to WhiteSoxfan1986's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 08:19 AM) I don't think so. I would put a lot of guys from his own era ahead of him. In no particular order: John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Greg Maddux, Johan Santana, and maybe Mike Mussina. Curt Schilling was very good, but certainly not one of the best ever - not even close. You would put Johan Santana in front of Curt Schilling? Nothing against Santana, because he's been a dynamite pitcher, but he's been a front of the rotation starter for 6 years and only a full-time starting pitcher for 5 years. How does that even get close to comparing to 15 years of excellent starting pitching? Beyond that, even if there are 5 pitchers better (I'd question if Mussina was better...they appear quite similar to me at the very least, and Schilling was absolutely dominant in the postseason), why should that stop Schilling from getting in? Being one of the 10 best pitchers of his generation still puts him in probably the top 3% of the pitchers of this generation, and you would have to be in the top 2% to get in? I don't think so. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 09:57 AM) Jack Morris has better post season accolades sans the bloody sock. I am lazy but statistically how do they measure up. Jack Morris was a rubber-armed horse who was just slightly above average in his career and is an overrated, but good, postseason pitcher. In 1984 with the Tigers, he was lights out. In 1987 with the Tigers, he got one start against the Twins and got lit the f*** up. In 1991, he was decent in the ALCS against Toronto, he was decent, but he had one of the most memorable World Series performances of any pitcher in history; and he got absolutely torn apart in 1992 as part of Toronto's rotation. In all, he had 2 good postseasons and 2 terrible postseasons. Curt Schilling was a far more dominant postseason pitcher than Jack Morris, compiling a 2.23 ERA in 19 career postseason starts (he went 11-2). Curt Schilling was a far superior pitcher to Jack Morris. -

QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 06:41 PM) Sign Frank Thomas to play CF and bat leadoff. I don't like any of the 3 out there. Wise started off hot for the Sox last year but by September he only batted .206 in 21 games, which basically is regular play. In almost 600 career at bats, Anderson has a .221 average and only a .277 OBP. I don't want to see him bat lead off with an OBP like that. Anderson is the best defensively of the three which gives him a stronger shot in my opinion. Owens wasn't terrible when he batted leadoff in '07, but like the other two, he wasn't impressive either. Owens has the best speed. Andeson has the best defense. Wise has the best offense. None give us the option we'd like to have in CF and batting leadoff. I don't think that's really been proven yet.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 07:59 PM) So, because Tom Brady got his knee destroyed, now there is a rule against defenders on the ground tackling QBs low. I'd love to know how defenders are expected to take the QB down now? The Force? Why do teams even have an offensive line? You can't f***ing hit the quarterback anywhere now. How's that new saying that sounds old as s*** go? 'I understand you want to protect the quarterback, but COME ON." -

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 07:58 PM) If Blyleven is not in, Schilling is not a HOF. There's no reason Bert Blyleven isn't in the Hall of Fame other than writers' ignorance. He's a Hall of Famer as far as I'm concerned and I will regard to him as such, even if he too is a douche. Beyond that, you can't not vote someone in just because there is another player who should be in but is not. -
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 04:15 PM) Maybe so and it looks like he is losing out to Nady to start in the OF for the Yankmees. Bring him back and give him another shot at it in Chitown. He would probbaly come cheap. (like for Chris Stewart maybe?) Only if the Yankees eat money at the end of that contract.

Minnesota is going to have Jesse Crain in the 8th. They also have Mijares who may open the season in the minors but should probably be up within a month. Craig Breslow isn't a bad option for them either. One thing's certain, I would never, ever have Minnesota last in regards to the bullpen. At the very worst, I would have them 3rd, but I don't think I've ever seen someone manage a bullpen better than Ron Gardenhire.

Is Curt Schilling a hall of famer?
witesoxfan replied to WhiteSoxfan1986's topic in The Diamond Club
That 3.46 ERA is almost a full run below the league average for his career, he had a 127 career ERA+, and in 12 of his final 13 seasons (some cut short by injuries or what have you), he had an ERA+ of 118 or better. Four top 4 finishes in the Cy Young, three top 2 finishes in the Cy Young, career WHIP of 1.14 over 3200 innings, 20 shutouts, three 20 win seasons. Curt Schilling was one of the 5 or 10 best pitchers of the past 10-15 years. I don't know how you don't get into the Hall of Fame when you are among the elite for that long of a period of time. -

I hate Schilling, but there is no doubt in my mind that he's a Hall of Famer.
