Dewayne Wise Named Full-time Starting CF/Leadoff hitter
witesoxfan replied to Kalapse's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (jamesdiego @ Mar 30, 2009 -> 08:20 PM) Hit .288 with us before Ozzie put him in the leadoff. It was too much for him, and sucked it up for the next 8 games with a .080avg. But that was only 8 freaking games until the end of the season that he blew. And it was after he got moved in the leadoff position in the middle of a freakin pennant race. It was only 8 freaking games that he blew... ...but you are more than happy to use 8 freaking PLATE APPEARANCES as justice for why he's better. Perhaps the reason he sucked in those 8 games in the leadoff role was not that he was forced into it and it was too much for him. Perhaps it was the fact that the league was adjusting to him and was figuring out how to pitch him. In 43 1st half plate appearances, Wise hit .350/.372/.600/.972. Those were the first 43 plate appearances for him on the season. In 100 2nd half plate appearances, Wise hit .202/.258/.382/.640. Those were after the league got some tape to look at. You tell me which is the better sample size to determine what type of major league hitter Dewayne Wise is. The first 43, where no one knew what he was doing, or the next 100, when they had him figured out. I don't like this move in the least, but I'm not nearly as worried about this simply because I don't think it is going to last long. -
QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Mar 30, 2009 -> 10:30 PM) All that said, I am a bit worried about all the young arms who racked up a ton of innings last year I would be too, but you have to imagine that the bullpen will bounce back to atleast respectability. From like the All-Star break and on, there was always a pitcher in that bullpen doing their damnedest to try and blow a game (and a lot of times they did). I don't see that happening again this year.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 30, 2009 -> 03:57 PM) But you couldn't truly play Edward Forty-Hands with the 32-ouncers, you'd just have to make due playing Edward Quarty-Hands. Bud Light is my beer, but I had to resort to drinking Miller High Life when we did Edward 40-hands not that long ago because I didn't want to be the guy drinking 32-ounce bottles and I wasn't about to do it with Coors Light.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Mar 30, 2009 -> 03:25 PM) Well if you're going to brag about how much you drank in the 1st place, you deserve to get ripped. I'm one of those guys who doesn't give a s*** how much you drink, but if you're going to brag, brag about something good. Has nothing to do with me being more of a man. it's like 62 beers, the Mad Dogs, and the 2 bottles of vodka too. That's actually quite impressive. Although I saw Bud Light 40's, and those generally tend to run in the 32 ounce form rather than 40 ounces. Either way, it would get you f***ed up.

QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 30, 2009 -> 12:13 PM) I can understand why MacDougal made the team. He was good this spring, and he's making a couple million, or whatever. If Egbert pitches well at AAA, he may find his way into the rotation at some point this year. It's pretty likely that will happen with Colon and Contreras around. You have to consider Marquez, Poreda, and Richard in any fill-in starter spot too.

Partying with Brian Anderson is definitely on my Bucket List.

Guillen: Sox not going outside org. for CF

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Mar 30, 2009 -> 09:49 AM) i also saw that the yankees named gardner their cfer. doesnt that make melky expendable? the sox should really try to get him If the Yankees want him as a 4th outfielder, they'll keep him. I'm sure that's the thought process going on right now. -
Is Curt Schilling a hall of famer?

QUOTE (earthshiner @ Mar 30, 2009 -> 10:02 AM) well if we are gonna include closers to the list add Hoffman, Rivera, Wagner, and Percival I don't think of Troy Percival as one of the greatest closers of this generation. And Hoffman really falls into the Lee Smith category of closers...very good closer who has stuck around for a long time, but is he really one of the greatest? You'll find no arguments from me from Wagner and Rivera, but I don't think you include closers on this list. You can't compare first basemen to catchers and middle infielders in regards to the Hall of Fame, so why compare starting pitchers to relief pitchers? -
Of course Bismarck got another foot of snow last night. I'll try and attach a few pictures in the coming days, it's pretty bad. This stuff is going to have to melt at some point and it's going to be a big f***ing mess when it all does.

QUOTE (earthshiner @ Mar 30, 2009 -> 09:56 AM) Maddux, Johnson, Glavine, Smoltz, Martinez, Mussina, Wells, hell, even David Cone had a career just about as good as Schilling David Wells was not a better pitcher than Curt Schilling. People really need to give that up. And, while David Cone just about had a career as good as Schilling, he did not have a career as good as Schilling. Almost only works in horseshoes and hand grenades. Mussina is arguable for reasons already mentioned in this thread. That leaves Maddux (HoF), Johnson (HoF), Glavine (HoF), Smoltz (HoF), and Martinez (HoF) all above him. I would say Schilling falls right in with those guys, he just didn't have the number of wins of everybody else, but everything else is right there. -
QUOTE (scenario @ Mar 29, 2009 -> 11:35 AM) I think the Verducci Effect could nab them this year. Perkins pitched 50-something innings in 2007 and 184 innings in 2008. Liriano pitched 120 innings in 2006... 0 innings in 2007... and 190+ innings in 2008. Those are stats screaming "a trip to the DL is coming in 2009". I'm afraid it's going to catch Danks though too, as Danks threw 60+ more innings in 2008 than he did in 07. The Twins also have Anthony Swarzak who is probably close to the majors, and he seems to be right in that Blackburn/Slowey mold. Every team in the Central has its question marks. It's pretty much impossible to predict who is going to win it at this point in the season, and the winner could very well only win 85 games (though it's usually in the 88-92 territory).

What is the main problem with Fields defensively?

QUOTE (Cubano @ Mar 29, 2009 -> 07:16 PM) Suppose Cuban league is about AA. Viciedo was a regular there. It is a fact, many Cuban defectors from this decade have produced at the lower level A, AA and AAA. I am just concerned about sending him to about the same level of baseball he came from. I don't know... Why? If he dominates, he'll get moved up quickly. He should be able to handle it. -
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Mar 27, 2009 -> 10:34 PM) What is with the Lillibridge hate? Last year we seemed pretty thankful to be paying $4.5M/year for Uribe's defense as a backup. Juan Uribe was the opening day 2Bman. (BL won't be) Juan Uribe hit for power. (BL doesn't know what power is) Juan Uribe actually had an economically sound contract last season. (BL doesn't know what a contract is) Good enough, or you want me to keep going? (BL still loves you) Juan Uribe quite honestly saved the White Sox last year, because I hate to think of who would have played 3rd other than him after Crede went down. He was actually pretty solid offensively filling in, and fantastic defensively. God bless Juan Uribe.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 27, 2009 -> 11:58 AM) I really don't get the level of Escobar love. I've seen his numbers, read some scouting report bits... I don't see much difference between him and Sergio Miranda, who we just traded for near nothing. In fact they are eerily similar in performance in their first years, and at almost the same age (Escobar is 1 year younger), except that Miranda had a much better batter's eye (see K/BB) and 50 more points of slugging (which I didn't think was possible). I think Escobar has value, but, he's not as good as he seems to be listed as, in my view. At least 10 other prospects in the system today I'd put ahead of him, maybe more. Otherwise I agree, good list, lots of good players to watch. BA has him rated as the best defensive infielder in the Sox system. That's why.

Rosenthal: Melky Cabrera is on the block; Sox would be good fit
witesoxfan replied to DaTank's topic in Pale Hose Talk
What really sucks about that is the Sox had the 2nd highest OPS out of the #3 hitter. I also believe the Sox have their leadoff hitter starting at 2B (and I envision him having around a .350 OBP, give or take); the next problem arises from the 2 hole. If Alexei hits there, I hope he could manage a .330 OBP which would be roughly a .340 OBP in front of Q and the others. I also believe they have their CF in Brian Anderson. He could hit 20+ homers and put up a .725+ OPS...with the defense he plays in CF, I'd have no problem with that. So, like I said, they could definitely upgrade, but they don't have needs in either area as of right now - it's more of a desire to upgrade both. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 26, 2009 -> 06:42 AM) Poreda is too much, sure. But the Yankees/Cashman and every team in baseball know that we need a legitimate, everyday CFer as well as an experienced leadoff hitter. Those don't come cheap... I think the conversation would be centered around Clayton Richard, Allen, Shelby and Danks...one of those four guys. Allen might be a bit superfluous with the glut of 1B/DH types they have on the team now, in Swisher, Nady, TEX, etc. The White Sox can't afford to part with Richard yet, so it would most likely be Shelby IMO. Really? The Sox could use a proven CF and leadoff hitter, surely, but I don't think there's a need, per se. It's more of a desire, or whatever word you want to use between need and luxury. -
QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Mar 26, 2009 -> 08:03 AM) I look at the likely situation of Lillibridge staying on and take comfort only in the fact that we have a stable manager/gm regime that has been time tested and has made me eat my words of prior situations like this Timo Perez? Darin Erstad? In situations like this, I really don't know if KW and Ozzie have a real good track record.

QUOTE (rangercal @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 06:15 PM) Is Curt Schilling a hall of famer? well.... Is Kevin Brown a hall of famer? I will say no. I thought about that. I'd say yes to both, just not first ballot. 4-6, perhaps even later. -
Mr Angelo, please trade for Jay Cutler!

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Mar 26, 2009 -> 12:15 AM) Obviously Cutler would be a big upgrade at QB for us but I wouldn't trade Forte for him. Looking at it right now, I don't know why Denver would take Forte. Yeah he is a great back, but they have like 6 running backs on their roster right now. Regardless of whether or not the Bears would give up Forte, I doubt the Broncos would ask for him in return. -
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 10:18 PM) God hates the upper Midwest. damn right he does The Missouri River is down like a foot and a half from where it was, so it's looking a lot better right now. They aren't out of the clear yet, and I imagine there's still quite a bit of water hanging around, but it's definitely better. I'm just glad I'm in southeast South Dakota, where I played softball today because it was so nice, rather than in that frigid s***.
