Why is Jermaine Dye not an MVP candidate? Obviously he is, but he's been nearly as valuable as Quentin has. He's just so damn quiet that he doesn't even seem to garner the consideration for the award. I'm really interested to see who it's awarded to, so that's something I'll be looking forward to. As it is, I just hope Pedroia does not get it. He could very easily get it and you would not hear an argument from me, I just hate his ass. How can you be that good at baseball when you are 5'6?

QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 02:05 AM) Ozzie throwing clayton back to the bump tomorrow doesn't help our chances for a 3 of 4 from the yankees, unfortunately His decisions sometimes, just laughable Of course, he *could* win, or rather WE could win (He could leave with a lead, or being down, and we could perhaps score more runs ultimately), but the odds of us winning with someone who's as f***ing bad as Clayton Richard, is very slim, and that pisses me off right now The only other pitcher I would ultimately use before Richard as the starter tomorrow is Carrasco, but I think he's more for damage control. You are assuredly not going to use Broadway against them as there's no doubt in my mind that the Yankees would absolutely destroy him (and he's been quite a bit worse than Richard has this year, even if it is skewed because of one outing...I think an outing tomorrow would skew that even worse). If you can get what he did against Seattle or Baltimore, the Sox are in a position to win; if you can get what he did against Cleveland, you go to Carrasco and hope he can get to the 7th and that the Sox are leading. If he gets rocked early and the game is essentially out of hand by the 3rd or 4th, you go to Broadway, hope he pitches decently, and that the Sox can get back into the game. If they can't, let Swisher throw an inning or two. I really don't think this matchup is nearly as bad as people anticipate it being. It obviously doesn't favor the Sox, but I'm not about to write them off right now.

QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 12:35 AM) Preferably I dont care for either very much, although think Richard would be great in a bullpen role. But as far as matchups go and who gives us the better chance to win, you have to give the ball to Richard over Broadway. My hope is we go on a surge and twins keep sinking that we dont even have to shorten the rotation for the end of the season. Keeping our starters fresh for the post-season. I think we could easily see Richard in the pen next year. Gage has mentioned before that he thinks Richard could have a huge impact out of the bullpen and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if that happened next season.

I'm not going to say anything over the top, but I will go as far as saying that if the Sox want to play October baseball, they will. 7-5 against New York, KC, Minnesota, and Cleveland essentially clinches the division, and 6-6 doesn't hurt either. I'm also getting that loving feeling.

QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 12:31 AM) While Uribe has filled in nicely and has been a nice surprise in taking over the 3B position I definitely dont want him to be starting for us in any position next season. Fields has seemingly been hurt whole season so its hard to judge him, but many people seemingly think he isnt going to hack it. Im on the Beltre train Have I ever told you how smart you are? lol Seriously though, I just think Beltre is the perfect choice for the Sox; there's no long-term committment, you should get compensation at the end of the season, he doesn't cost an arm and a leg monetarily (though he's not cheap by any stretch of the imagination either), he shouldn't cost an arm and a leg to trade for though he won't be stolen either, and he's a very underrated player - I don't think .270 30 .825 is seriously out of the question for him, and he plays fantastic defense at 3B too, which is incredibly important. As far as I'm aware, there are no serious injury concerns (though he is having surgery for a torn ligament on his hand...he wanted to play through it so it obviously wasn't effecting him a terrible amount). Beltre just seems too perfect. I also don't want to look too far ahead either because there's still plenty of season left to be played. -

QUOTE (rangercal @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 11:37 PM) You guys have one of the premier RB's in football, a good defense and a 24 year old qb who is passing the ball at a 71% clip. I think the Bills ARE that good. I think Lynch, who I love and think he's going to be a workhorse for 4-5 years or so, is a bit overrated at the moment, but at the same time I think the Bills receivers are a bit underrated too. Lee Evans is one of the top 10-15 receivers in the NFL, James Hardy is quick and is just a huge target wherever he is, Parrish is a nice little slot receiver, and Royal is a nice tight end for Edwards to throw to as well. That's not including Lynch, who himself is a pretty good receiver out of the backfield. I'm just really excited, and with the young talent the Bills have defensively along with how quick they are and with a bit of depth, I just can't help but get excited that the Pats might possibly go down. It's way too early and they haven't done a ton offensively to impress me, but I just get a really good feeling about this team. A huge key is the health of Trent Edwards, because he's a bit fragile, but if they keep him healthy, I think they have a chance to be a damn good team. I expect 10 wins with a soft schedule and I honestly don't think I'd be surprised with 11 or 12. -

I want nothing to do with Uribe being handed a job out of ST. I want nothing to do with him being the opening day starter at any position in the infield going into ST next season. I would love to have him back in a utility role next season, but it'd be nice if he were a security blanket rather than just a guy they count on to play a lot of games. If he is resigned and has under 200 PAs, it'd be a good year for Sox infielders. I've also said before that I don't think Fields is in the organization next year. Perhaps they'll give him a chance to get healthy, but I think whatever value he has will be used by Williams to get someone he wants. -
QUOTE (Ron @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 11:49 PM) Richard? Ugh... I'd really like to see Broadway get a shot against a non-Royals team. I really doubt Richard is that much better than him right now. I wouldn't. The Royals have virtually no power throughout that entire lineup; that's the perfect team for Broadway to face. If you put him against the Yankees, I imagine he would remind a lot of people of Felix Diaz (that is, he could very easily give up 4 homers in less than 4 innings). Though I haven't seen him, Richard apparently has the ability to get major league hitters out now and then. That's who I want starting against New York. Broadway reminds me so much of an NL pitcher. I wouldn't be surprised if he's either packaged or just dealt to an NL team this offseason, perhaps either Washington or San Francisco.

QUOTE (rangercal @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 10:13 PM) Q,Danks,Floyd,Jenks, ramirez would be my order. That's just how much I value starting pitching. I think tiers would be better to look at our young franchise players. Tier 1 : Q Tier 2: danks Tier 3: Floyd,Jenks,Ramirez It would be nice to see Swisher and Fields jump into tier 3 next year. I think they both may have just had off years. I already think Swisher is in tier 3 even considering his poor season. He's hitting .220 and is just barely below a league average player pretty much all across the board. If he hits .240, he's an above average player and is most likely playing CF. Even if he's mediocre defensively, give or take a step on that scale, he's very valuable to the club. It's when he becomes a 1Bman that he loses that value, but that versatility is also nice. I think if he had a good season he would jump into tier 2, though everyone in tier 3 has the same ability to do so. Point being this is a very nice group of players the Sox have going forward, even though they are an "old" team.

I don't watch enough Arizona, but Bob Melvin should be out of a job. That team is just way too talented to be a sub-.500 team, even if they are a young team and are struggling. Perhaps better scouting of their own minor league system too so they don't give up a 40 homer guy.

so do the Jags suck or are the Bills good? Cuz that was a pretty sweet win. Oakland this week, St. Louis next week, and then Arizona the next week...win 2 of the 3 and I'll be a happy camper (and I figure the game they'll lose is against Zona because they look ridiculous) -
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 12:04 AM) wouldn't the dream scenario be that we win out the rest of the year? 24 game winning streak would be pretty sweet

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 15, 2008 -> 01:50 PM) How'd the Cubs do in the run where Wood was down? How good are the mets doing now with no Wagner? Hence the "Doing/did" part. People say "Hey we can get 2 top prospects!!!!" Well great, we can have a stud starting 5 rotation, then hand the ball to Ryan Buckvich and Mike Mcdoofus for the 7-9. I'm sure that would work out well. Who would honestly put Bukvich or McDougal in the closer's role? You are exaggerating and it's ruining any point you may have had. It's not like trading one reliever for two stud prospects is going to suddenly leave you without any arms in the bullpen. In that scenario, Thornton becomes the closer, and I would have no problem with that so long as the Sox got a fantastic return for Jenks. And I think anyone who would turn down 2 fantastic prospects for Bobby Jenks is fooling themselves. Finally, the Tigers and Indians didn't lose this year because they didn't have a closer; they have lost because of a s***ty offense in Cleveland's case, a s***ty rotation in Detroit's case, and overall s***ty bullpens for both of them. You can try and blame it on their lack of a closer, but that's short-sighted as hell.
-
if Linebrink, Thornton, and Jenks can pitch well, the Sox bullpen will be OK. Dotel has just been a disaster recently and I imagine his arm is just exhausted. This was a fantastic day, and other than letting them tie it back up, it could not have gone much better.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 13, 2008 -> 03:02 PM) I think you have the cause and effect backwards there, son. LOL, I was hoping for a play on words. The one on my chest seriously looks like someone beat me like a red-headed stepchild. It could pass as a large bruise.

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 10:16 PM) Is Brian Roberts healthy? I noticed that he didn't play tonight. I'm hoping it's just a day off because he hasn't had one all season.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 10:55 PM) Then I'll take that as a plus from tonight. We did beat KRod and won the Angels series. I just can't believe we can't do better than 1 of 4 from Toronto with so much at stake. We are a veteran laden team and even though baseball is a marathon I'd hope we could do better than 1 of 4. the Blue Jays have won 11 of 12, so in that regard, atleast the Sox didn't get swept like the two teams Toronto played before the Sox.

If Ozzie is going to give his boy-toy Jerry Owens playing time, why would he not use Josh Fields in the 9th for Griffey against a left-handed pitcher? His average against lefties this season is under .200...Josh Fields put up an OPS of 1.069 and hit .321 against lefties last year. At some point respect for the accomplishments of a player need to be forgotten and an objective analysis of how he is actually performing needs to be done. Swisher has been a stud late in games, so I have no problem with him hitting, and AJ actually has a higher average against lefties this year than righties, so again no problem...but I sit here and wonder why Ozzie is just playing into the hands of Cito Gaston. Ozzie is a fantastic manager but he makes so many questionable in-game decisions that it really can hurt a team. Fields probably gets out there, but he has a better chance of getting a base hit, let alone putting one in the stands, than Griffey does right there. Hell, Konerko with a f***ed up knee probably has a better chance of getting a base hit at that point in time.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 08:10 PM) don't the twinkies play at Baltimore this weekend? Not even Peter Angelos would call the Orioles pretty good. They are a .500 team at home. The Twins are sub-.500 on the road. Thus, the Orioles should be the favorite to win. They also have the 6th best offense in the AL in terms of runs scored. "Pretty good" is also a general statement; the Orioles are a mediocre team talent wise, the Indians have a good team and pitching staff and an offense that has been better, and the Rays have a damn good team and pitching staff though how they keep winning games I do not know. I'll bluntly say that I doubt the Twins will sweep the Orioles and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if they lose the series.
