Twins Watch Thread 2008
QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Sep 7, 2008 -> 03:55 PM) Bannister looks like a Twins killer but I don't trust Davies for anything and 9/11 has Liriano vs. Duckworth. the key to beating the Twins anymore is just getting to the bullpen...their bullpen over the past month and a half has been just terrible. I expect the Twins to sweep too, but if it's close and the Twins have to go to their pen even in the 7th, the game is just getting started.

Sox Loser
QUOTE (SouthSidePride05 @ Sep 7, 2008 -> 04:38 PM) I was hoping for another walk-off. Too bad.. at least we can gain 1/2 game on Minnesota if we win tomorrow night. And 26,000 fans at the Cell today, on a nice 71 degree Sunday.. I don't get it! football season opener...most people in America could really give two s***s about baseball, which is unfortunate

White Sox Winner!
Sox going up a game in the standings is better than most thought at this time period...and Ozzie played a mediocre, if that, lineup. It's amazing what Q does for the lineup this team puts on the field...just sucks Howard has overtaken him for MLB lead. F*** him. Regardless of future events, this is the biggest series of the year. Win 3 of 4 from Anaheim and hope Tampa does the same from the Twins and that's breathing room come September. Taking 3 of 4 from Anaheim is a must anyways, regardless of whether the Sox are up 4 games up past that point or tied. This is absolutely the most important series of the year until Tex's counter gets down to 0.

So... what are our options?
Thome wasn't near the risk Chavez is. Thome was hurt one year, had been very productive outside of his injury plagued year for several before, and he was going to be asked to sit on his ass and hit the ball a long ways. Chavez has been hurt, his production has taken a dive because he's been hurt a lot, and he is expected to play 3B. I think the Sox have seen what back injuries do to 3Bman, and I think that's something Williams has to consider now. I still say Beltre makes the absolute most sense if he's made available for a relatively decent price and I will continue to say it until he is dealt or the White Sox make a move for a 3Bman.

It's not like we're in a playoff race or anything
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 09:08 PM) Plain and simple, my signature says it all. Plus, it's become abundantly clear that this is not a playoff team. They are fading down the stretch to the Twins, just like EVERY OTHER YEAR they've had a close race with Minnesota. Not to excuse the team, but it's not like Minnesota has won 10 straight. They should be using this time to make a couple games on Minnesota but atleast Minnesota's struggles on the road have continued.

MacDougal impressions
QUOTE (BearSox @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 11:02 PM) Maybe 2005 Bobby Jenks, but current Bobby Jenks has nothing on MacDougal when he is going good. Jenks at his best is one of the best 5 bullpen arms in the league

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 04:08 PM) Kruk made a good point on BBTN about this, suggesting that adding a lot of guys to a playoff contender can be a real distraction. just more guys to socialize with

So... what are our options?
QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 10:20 PM) Welcome to your 2004 White Sox, as I've been saying all year. That team, like this one, was a HR-dependent, feast or famine team with zero speed and a revolving door 5th starter. So we got rid of big bats Magglio and Lee and basically built our version of the Twins. And bang: we win the World Series. So, if it aint broke, fix it, right? Yet here we are three years later and its 2004 all over again. Our big fix-it trade made no sense whatsoever unless he was literally brought in because Paulie and Swisher weren't hitting. What can we do? Start over next season. Get back to pitching + defense and the ability to play small ball to compliment our already there slugging ability. Get a real leadoff hitter. No more experiments. Just say no to any more 2004 lineups. I didn't read any lower and Tony has destroyed the thread to this point...top of the order hitter, maybe two of them, and upgrade the pitching again. Oh, and I'm glad you're not in the front office. Pitching in 2005 and nothing else. That offense was absolutely f***ing horrendous and the only thing it was able to do was scratch out a run here and there. If you coupled that offense with the 2004 or 2006 pitching, you were talking about a 72 win team (you know, kind of like 2007).

Loser
atleast the extreme psycho post was nice and calm the only thing this team has to worry about is getting to the playoffs. I don't think they'll win in the playoffs (because I think the Rays are the best team in baseball and the laws of probability say that the team doesn't have a great chance to win), but get there and see what happens. It could be that the offense gets hot and they score 100 runs in the playoffs...anything is possible. I also don't know what people would expect when the Sox are using their 6th starter against the soon to be Cy Young winner...I mean, honestly? Clayton Richard also would not start in the playoffs, just so everyone is aware. How did MacDougal look though?

Call Ups
I may be incorrect in this, but I think you have to atleast be on the 40-man roster come September 1st to be eligible. If the Sox signed Sammy Sosa right now, they wouldn't be able to use him in the postseason if they made it but they could obviously use him during the remainder of the regular season. I don't know what would happen if you had 16 people on the DL and you needed an extra body for the postseason, but I'm sure there are exceptions that would be made in an unrealistic scenario like that.

Did the HR Derby ruin Hamilton?
QUOTE (Gregory Pratt @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 10:59 AM) No. He's just tired -- it's his first full season. And Young/Kinsler haven't been getting on for him. (Kinsler is out, at that.) That's not going to affect his average or power numbers though...only his RBI (Young and Kinsler not getting on base, that is...fatigue certainly will). Point made that he's only half the man that Carlos Quentin is and he has no blood of a god in him.

WHITE SOX WINNER (8/31)
It's not 4.5, but they're in first place. Lee dominated the Sox in the only game he started against them this year, but his ERA in his career against them is over 6. Let's hope that his journey to 20 wins is avoided for 1 more start.

2008 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 01:58 PM) http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...sp&c_id=mlb Boras strikes again. I can't say that I am surprised, but all this drama over $200,000 out of a $6 million contract. The time lost this season will hurt him a lot with the Pirates' FO, and the fans will take a while to warm up to such tactics, as they've been bad for so long in PITT, they can get used to almost anything happening now to their team. I thought it was worthy of it's own thread, but yeah, Boras is a complete dick.

Boras questioning legitimacy of Alvarez deal
Boras claims deal not valid by my understanding, Pedro Alvarez signed his deal shortly before/after midnight on the night of the deadline; that has been OK'd by the Commissioner's office, so that's not big deal. However, Boras isn't as cool with it because the $6 mill signing bonus Alvarez got is less than that of Buster Posey (by the San Francisco Giants, who also rolls of toilet paper at $32 per roll) and is the same as Eric Hosmer, who the Royals selected with the pick after. Also interesting is that Hosmer's contract was submitted after Alvarez's, so if Alvarez's is wrong for being submitted too late, so is Hosmer's. That would nullify two contracts for Boras and hold back two MLB careers. The only quote that gets me is this.... doesn't that sound like Pedro negotiated the deal on his own? and isn't that against the rules? As I always, I do hate the living s*** out of Scott Boras, but he gets money and he's not afraid to risk the starts of major league careers for some of his players to get said money. What a complete and utter f***ing dick.

Why the OC hate?

White Sox Winner
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 10:42 PM) Gaining two games in just over a day's worth of hours is solid. WELL DONE Gavin. That was needed and we can kind of air out the bullpen if we need to tomorrow with the day off Thursday. Let's get another win tomorrow, and hopefully the offense keeps it up. absolutely; if the offense shows up again, I see no reason why a sweep wouldn't be in order. and by show up, I mean merely score 5 runs. Danks is pitching, and he's a stud, and even if he can't get through 6 innings, you can burn through the pen. I've never seen Liz pitch, but by all accounts he has fantastic stuff but apparently can't use it as a starter. He's been torched. I'm expecting 8 runs tomorrow, even considering they've never seen him before. Work him into hitter's counts and drill his s***.
