  1. I was all excited about getting up and watching the game today. Then I slept in until 2:45 and had to go to work. I suck.
  2. QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 01:49 AM) I think he got there tuesday so his first start will probably be tomorrow similar to beckham who really disapointed with only 1 hit tonight. Demote him. Cut him. What a reach of a pick.
  3. QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 10:07 AM) I have a hard time labeling any team as "worst franchise" Money ball is the name of the game now....the Twins are an oddity however, best scouts in baseball It depends on what you mean by "Moneyball." If you mean OBP, SLG, OPS, then you are absolutely wrong; you would be suggesting that baseball has become more sabermetric than anything, and those are just the very basic sabermetric statistics. Moneyball is all about finding what teams do not value and loading your team up with that. The A's have had a good pitching staff for a number of years now and it hasn't had everything to do with the quality of their pitcher, as, instead, they've started to focus their game around defense and building the best defensive team they can. If you were wondering, the 2005 White Sox team was a "Moneyball" team in that it wasn't a big spender and instead focused it's financial resources on the entire team itself, rather than one or two players, and found what was being overlooked by the market - defense. The White Sox and A's were the 2 best defensive teams in the entire majors in 2005, and it's no wonder why both teams were in the top 4 in the AL in team ERA. The Twins also take a Moneyball approach and do have good scouting but also have fantastic coaching and a top 2 manager in all of baseball. That doesn't hurt. Rick Anderson is also one of the most underrated pitching coaches in the entire majors.
  4. what's so exciting about Hochevar? He was the 1st overall pick, sure, but he hasn't put up anything resembling dominant numbers in the minors, and everything I've read has said that he hasn't lived up to anything near his #1 pick. I haven't seen him pitch, so I can't comment fully, but I've seen people projecting him as much more of a #3-4 starter rather than a #1 or #2. I guess at this point I'm just not seeing it in the numbers nor reports, but perhaps he'll do something incredible.
  5. s*** I can watch this game for 2 hours before I have to go to work. That's awe.some.
  6. I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever that arbitration will be offered to Crede. If he remains with the White Sox, they have their 3Bman for 2009 unless the front office has something else up their sleeve and already figure out what they will do at 3B before the deadline for offering arbitration comes up (and I believe that happens generally right before or after the Winter Meetings); if he declines, $5 mill is freed up and the Sox will get a draft pick. Uribe is a different story. I imagine the organization wants him back next year as a reserve infielder (because he's one of the best reserve infielders in the league), but I don't know why Juan wouldn't want to go looking for a starting job elsewhere. I'd actually bet more money on Uribe signing a multi-year deal with the Sox than him signing somewhere else, but one organization that does like him and would appreciate what he brings and perhaps bring out some of the talent is Boston. If Boston could find a taker for Lugo, I think Uribe would have his starting job locked up there. So I really am not sure if they'll offer him arbitration, but if they can't lock him up to a deal prior to, I imagine they will...he's valuable enough off the bench that he's worth $4.5 or so.
  7. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 04:57 AM) Slowey's been throwing the s*** out of the ball. I'd be surprised if he gave up more than 2 runs.
  8. QUOTE (Yoda @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 12:59 AM) Sean Gallagher going up against Kevin Slowey. Neither pitcher has faced the opposing team. Perhaps the A's can give us a hand and take the series while the Sox take care of business at home. Slowey's been throwing the s*** out of the ball. I'd be surprised if he gave up more than 2 runs.
  9. I say we burn this thread to the ground. There's an appreciation for the thought behind it, but there's a month and a half left in the season and a 3-game set in Minnesota at the end of the season. Literally anything could happen between now and then.
  10. Duchscherer left in the 3rd. Thankfully Kirk Saarloos sucks so bad that he was good. A's win 3-2, Sox up 1 game.
  11. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 06:15 PM) Is there going to be a really good QB in the draft this year? the dude from Georgia is pretty good by all accounts
  12. Brook Fordyce also, if he's obscure enough, Chris Widger. And I ask because he is a god to some.
  13. QUOTE (forrestg @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 05:31 PM) I just though about how tall Alexei is. He's 6'3'.. That would be tall enough to be a first baseman and could you imagine the range we would gain putting Getz at second and Ramirez at first.. Ramirez, Getz, Cabrera and Juan at third. We then could put Anderson in center and use Wise in right field.. Now that some speed no one would expect that line up. Oh we would use jd as our dh. Just a thought............................. You are replacing Paul Konerko with Chris Getz. Realize that.
  14. QUOTE (kageman129 @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 04:45 PM) Schilling may call it quits Apparently Curt Schilling might be retiring. I hope so, I have never liked this guy. Just seems like a douche. thank God...maybe he can take a dump on a toilet and stick his nose in there and pretend it still smells like roses
  15. QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 17, 2008 -> 08:52 PM) Isn't Figgins only under team control for one more season? That would knock his trade value down to a pretty manageable level. If he would agree to go to LA, I'd love to see Kenny deal Thome and cash for Figgins. That would allow Paulie to move to DH and give us a legitimate leadoff hitter. That said, I don't see JT agreeing, so it's probably a pipe dream. why on earth would you move Thome?
  16. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 17, 2008 -> 09:45 PM) We already have the next Sandy Koufax and his name is John Motherf***ing Danks. wurd upp
  17. Negron actually looks like he has a bit of power, which is what makes Owens virtually useless. I'm intrigued.
  18. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 17, 2008 -> 04:58 AM) http://blogs2.startribune.com/blogs/christ...n-negotiations/ Story about the Twins' attempted acquisition of Washburn...M's wanted to subsidize the contract and get back Blackburn and/or Bonser uh, the Twins would have made that deal for Bonser if the M's were paying for his salary. Outside of 2006, when he was OK, he's been an absolutely terrible pitcher and it's gotten worse over the past year. I would say the M's wanted Blackburn if they paid most if not all of Washburn's entire salary or Bonser if they did not, and the Twins didn't need/want Washburn that badly.
  19. QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 17, 2008 -> 08:56 AM) Possibly his PED use? Kenny tends to avoid those players (although we did have Canseco on our squad for a little while several seasons ago). I'm wondering if Shapiro told Kenny and Bill Smith off the record that he wouldn't agree to a deal with a divisional opponent off the record beforehand. Even if Shapiro said that he wouldn't agree to a deal, I would have claimed Byrd anyways using the old "if I can't have him, no one can" philosophy, but it also hurts Cleveland as they would have gotten nothing back and Boston would have had to have looked elsewhere for a 5th or 6th starter. As a fan of the White Sox, that's win-win-win as far as I'm concerned.
  20. QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 17, 2008 -> 08:49 AM) Expecting the Sox to sweep a series is pathetic and just sad. I disagree as I fully expected a sweep of Kansas City (and was right in expecting it), but expecting to sweep any series on the road is a bit much. However, aforementioned poster is saying that they aren't happy because the Sox won the game 2-1, not the series. I also think people are underestimating the Sox struggles against Oakland previously and how tough it is in general to win on the road (unless you're the Cubs, but they're all on crystal meth or HGH or something which is why they can play well on the road). Considering both, I was going to be happy leaving Oakland winning one game...if they can win the series I'd be ecstatic.
  21. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Aug 16, 2008 -> 10:48 PM) Just got back from demolition derby. Watched the first six innings and the inconsistency of this teams offense is sickening. The A's are not good...to talk about not getting swept and being happy to have won 2-1 is pathetic and just sad. I am fine with the split but the stupid and sloppy play is maddening. They need to wake up or October baseball will be a myth come mid-September. In case you were wondering, the team won...the offense was inconsistent as it usually is but thanks to the pitching, they won. The offense is disturbing but the pitching performance was promising. Danks is a stud.

  23. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Aug 16, 2008 -> 06:50 PM) Poreda? No, but everything I've read says he doesn't have anything to keep hitters off his fastball. There's even an article today about that where Coop says he still needs a lot of work on his secondary stuff, even though he's making some progress. Everyone admits it, even Poreda himself admits he's not ready. I highly doubt that we'd have seen guys like Broadway, Richard, Carrasco, Russell, Horacio Ramirez, and Ehren Wassermann come up over Poreda if he had anything even close to an average change-up to go along with his fastball. The Sox are notorious for rushing pitchers, and the fact that Poreda isn't even an option right now (despite a media article that says it's possible, but also while admitting it was the media to begin with that has caused the speculation) says he doesn't have anything to offer other than maybe a spot as a LOOGY. Poreda would get killed at the Major League level. If you have a 97 MPH fastball that sinks, you can get major league hitters out, so long as you locate it. On top of that, even bad secondary stuff will catch hitters off balance when you can throw a fastball by them at 97. I strongly doubt he'd get killed; I sense the reason the organization hasn't called him up is because they don't believe he would be phenomenal, ala Jenks, upon getting the call up, and they don't want to start his clock this early in his career when there are other options that they can use in the meantime. Not even the baseball side of baseball is strictly "baseball"...there are financial and business concerns that are to be taken into consideration as well. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if the organization felt Poreda was the best option right now but that the other options are similar to Poreda and said clocks have either been started already or they don't mind starting them. I have not seen Poreda, so scouting reports only do so much for me; however, he's in AA and he's pitching well and while the ballpark helps that, so does his natural stuff, and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he would be able to help the Sox this season.
