QUOTE (BlackBetsy @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 01:18 PM) Your sound reasoning and well thought out logic would get you IP banned at a lot of places. Paulie is going nowhere, as he should go nowhere. Griffey will NOT be on the 2009 Sox unless they keep him on to DH and let Thome go (I'd prefer Thome, he's kept his power better). If you asked me for the BIGGEST benefit to this deal it would be the draft picks we'd get for Griffey when he signs somewhere else as a free agent. The Sox could conceivably get 6 supplemental picks next year - 2 for Cabrera, 2 for Griffey, 2 for Thome (if no option picked up). I'd say that would help the farm system, but I'm not high on the Sox's drafting. Thome's option is likely going to vest and, with reports that the Phillies are still sending $5.5 mill over next year, it would be dumb to get rid of Thome when he's only going to cost you about $7.5 mill. Thome's going to be in a Sox uniform next year.

I would like Hanrahan...not as hot on Lannan but sure, whatever dude. Hanrahan appears to have big upside, and I remember him as a Dodgers top prospect a few years back, so there's something there.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 01:03 PM) Probably because Clayton has better stuff. I'd back away from this deal if they want Richard, but Broadway would be on the table, and McCulloch should always be on the table. Have you actually seen Lannan? Because I just can't full believe that Richard has better stuff than him, not when Lannan has an ERA in the low 3's. Even in a pitcher's park and in the NL, that's still a damn good ERA.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 12:48 PM) I still can't believe that the BoSox are seriously considering trading their best hitter when they're only 3 games out of first and only one game ahead of the Yankees. They've been putting up with his crap for several years, and would've traded/released him over the traveling secretary incident weeks ago if they found his behavior completely unacceptable and wanted to get rid of him on principle. Can't they put up with him for two more months, plus October if they're lucky? They are trying to get Jason Bay as a replacement plus prospects; they'd have Bay and the prospects for a while. They'd also be getting as much value for Ramirez as they could, rather than letting him walk at the end of the year for nothing. It makes sense to me. The Marlins do it because they get half a year of a fantastic hitter in a year when they have a chance at the playoffs, they actually get some fans to show up to some games, and they add a prospect or two as well. The Pirates do it for the prospects.

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 11:53 AM) 1/2 the games are on the road?? You build your team around the park you play in.

Griffey should do 69........cuz it was the year he was born in.

QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:02 AM) score says either weathers or affeldt part of the deal..... LOLOL

QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 08:22 AM) Who needs a DH right now? Can this be part of a 3 team deal where we just flip Griff to somewhere else? thats really, really doubtful...the Sox wouldn't pick up Griffey only to trade him when he has pretty much no value as it is
-
JPN, if KW actually trades for David Weathers, I think I'd owe you a monster apology...LOL

QUOTE (aboz56 @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 07:58 AM) BA screwed once again. Poor Brian. I don't think this move should really affect Brian Anderson at all. QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 08:01 AM) Maybe Homer Bailey is coming back as well for one of Coop's reclamation projects. One can only pray. I think it's too soon but he's a guy I think the Sox brass have their eye on. He still has value though...wait another year so 75% of baseball fans can throw him under the bus and consider him done for and then the Sox can pick him up. He'll lead the league in arm angle or so. I really need to see the rest of this...there are a few ways I can think of that this works out, but it's just so damn weird and random.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 01:30 AM) guys didn't hit 72 homers and win more cy youngs as they got older. it's been reported that steroids were used in the 70s and 80s. There's also more to hitting homers than steroids alone...parks have been constructed to favor the homer more and the ball has been juiced in the past 10-15 years. Nolan Ryan also was throwing no-hitters into his 40s and pitching perfectly effectively...did he use steroids too? Just because there are homers and crazy Cy Young award winners and whatever whatever doesn't mean that steroids weren't being used. You're naive if that's the only reasoning you need.

QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 03:46 PM) We'll see tonight what Floyd is made of. It's a must win for us. He's had some poor outings lately after a great start. I honestly hope the kid has gotten his head on straight. I am just not ready to proclaim him a future all-star on this team for the next 5-10 years like many have. I hope I am wrong but if the right deal, or at this point, string of deals, comes along that gives us a great chance to win it this year, then I would go for it. If Floyd pans out well for us, then I'd gladly eat crow. Oh there's that 5-10 years again...I don't think anyone used the word all-star though. He bailed the Sox out in a must-win situation though to keep them in first place...he's thrown over 130 innings in a White Sox uniform this season and still has a great ERA...how much more do you want him to prove himself? Floyd starts game 2 of the playoffs for me right now...that means you better be getting an ace pitcher in return to even consider dealing him.

I'm more afraid of Michael Bourn. He would steal his way to a victory for the Astros and they would rename the team the Houston Bourn's.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 11:29 PM) I'm not trying to be Captain Wise-A** here, but when I think of hard, I think 95+. If Massett throws a moving 92-93 mph fastball right down the shoot, it has a good chance of going 400 feet, while a 95+ mph fastball right down the shoot is tougher. And yes, 2-3+ mph does make a difference. He throws hard. I didn't say fast. I said hard.
-
I think Bay can be overrated or underrated, depending on who you talk to. I do think he's feasting a bit on NL pitching, so a move to the AL might hurt his numbers a bit, though he could very well destroy the monster.
-
QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 11:17 PM) He does?? I didn't say he throws 142 MPH, but 93 MPH is faster than the average major league fastball...that's hard, isn't it? I mean, do you want to split hairs and say he only throws semi-hard or not so soft or what? If you got hit by his fastball, you'd fall to the ground and wince in pain.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 09:51 PM) The only thing- the Cubs play alot of away games in September and if Milwaukee can win tomorrow, they'd only be 3 up. However, if the Cubs win tomorrow, it's over, IMO. Seriously? If the Cubs are 5 games up with 2 months to play, they can already ice the cake and spray the champagne, yet if they lose the Brewers still have a chance? With 2 months to play? I think you're delusional if you believe that. At this point in time, I don't see a huge difference between 3 games and 5 games. There's definitely a difference, but it's not a difference between life and death. I mean, people still think the Tigers are in the race in the AL Central and they are 6 out right now and that could be 6.5 by the end of the night. Settle down.

This might well be the most ridiculous thread I've seen in a while. The Royals wouldn't trade Greinke without getting a monster package in return and almost certainly not within the division, Nick Masset isn't that good (straight fastball, mediocre curve, and not much else) and team's realize that; Texas would be interested in him because he throws hard, has major league experience, and he might be cheap, and he has virtually no value whatsoever, so anybody thinking the Sox would get anything great for him is fooling themself. Personally, I don't see the value in trading Nick Masset straight up for someone...if anything, he should be a throw-in to finish a deal.

QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 03:33 PM) Who's freaking out? I'm just being realistic. This team was flawed from the beginning in its construction, unless you think an aging, slugger-loaded team with little speed, two young pitchers and one really old one was going to go thrashing the AL central. The only surprise has been Dye, who although older and not exactly fast, has been doing a hell of a job hitting .300 and lifting the team up. But how many times have we seen the dreaded Paulie/Thome slump, and now for whatever odd reason Swisher seems to be having a crap--or okay, inconsistent--year at the plate? I'm not saying it's over, I'm saying I'd be really surprised to not finish third. And if that doesn't turn out to be true, well then: cheers! Yeah a team that's in the top 5 in the league in runs scored and in first place by a game and a half is flawed...but the 2005 team that had one of the worst offenses in the AL wasn't flawed because 2 guys in the starting lineup could bunt and Podsednik could steal bases...that makes sense It's also hilarious that you mentioned Thome slumping when he's been the team's 3rd best hitter, and that you fail to mention the massive explosion of Carlos Quentin, who should probably win the AL MVP right now. This team's offense is flawed because it's all or nothing, sure, but it's a good enough offense to win and that just because they don't bunt and have Jerry Owens slapping the ball around they are going to finish in 3rd place. Get real, this team is likely headed to the playoffs and it's because of an explosive but inconsistent offense and a damn good pitching staff.

QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 01:04 PM) Benching PK is like being one man short on the roster-he cant pinch hit, pinch run, or be a defensive replcement right now He can't pinch hit? Not sure I understand that.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 11:09 AM) I think people are starting to skip past my original post which had nothing to do with the Sox actually being pretenders, but more with CSN deciding to use that song for the game. I think it's more or less that everyone in the world is out to get the White Sox...ESPN, Tribune Company, Comcast...even their own fans. The White Sox are officially fistf***ed.

why didn't anybody tell me Puddle of Mudd concerts suck? I left like an hour into it and just went to the bar to get hammered. Now I have a headache.

QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 11:09 PM) I hope we're the real deal but there are some serious questions surrounding this team right now yeah serious questions...they've lost 3 f***ing games people need to step away from the f***ing ledge and realize that this team is not playing well right now...that's pretty much it
