  1. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Feb 22, 2008 -> 02:05 AM) Here's SI's Jon Heyman's top 10 list http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writ...tGMs/index.html 1. Theo 2. Beane 3. Double D from D town 4. Mark Shapiro 5. The Cashman 6. Gillick 7. Josh Byrnes 8. Omar Minaya 9. Dan O'Dowd 10. Kenny Williams 10. Kevin Towers I'd rate Towers a lot higher. Why in the blue hell is O'Dowd in there? For 2 winning seasons in 8 years?
  2. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Feb 21, 2008 -> 02:07 PM) Since I know nothing about him as a man I can not comment on what kind of person he is but as an agent there isn't another person in the field who's better at their job than Boras. Personally, I have nothing against the guy unlike most people who seem to think he's Satan. He's a dick but he's good at what he does. Kind of like Bonds. Which is why I kind of like him.
  3. QUOTE(greg775 @ Feb 21, 2008 -> 10:00 PM) Get rid of Mike MacDougal. He cannot throw the ball over the plate. Good job Mike. Bean Paulie next. Then Thome. He only hits players the Sox should get rid of. Next up is Uribe
  4. QUOTE(striker62704 @ Feb 21, 2008 -> 04:57 PM) Fields, Richar and Floyd/Masset would get it done, IMO why on earth would you trade Fields for Roberts?
  5. Matsui did pretty well, but then again, Ed Wade is an idiot. 3 years, $15 mill for a below average player
  6. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 21, 2008 -> 11:04 AM) If we give him a major league deal, we're guaranteeing that Danks will wind up in the minor leagues because we'd have to buy Colon's contract out right away to put him down in AAA for anything other than a short rehab stint. So, let's imagine this, fairly likely circumstance. Danks comes out and has an excellent spring. Works on his cutter, has success, looks better than next year. We pay Colon $4 million. Colon comes out throwing 85 and can't get anyone out. Oh, and Floyd and Contreras do fine also. If you give Bartolo a major league deal, then essentially the Sox have no choice but to put him on the major league roster right away and hope that he can work through his problems, otherwise the money was a waste. So Colon comes out and for April, and May, and part of June, goes like 1-12. Eventually we finally cut him, but we've basically destroyed our season and lost a year of arbitration eligibility for Danks in the process. Is this guaranteed? No. Colon could come out and still throw 95+ (although I think someone would have signed him if he had that left in him). But if you can't send him to the minor leagues, if you give him a major league deal with guaranteed money, you're guaranteeing him a rotation spot whether or not he earns it. It'd be just like Erstad/Anderson all over again. Danks could go the entire spring without giving up a hit or a walk and the Sox still would have to send him to the minors. And there's absolutely nothing stopping the White Sox from putting him on the DL. If Colon sucks and looks injured, they aren't just going to trot him out there for 3 months and hope that he just recovers his form. Also, while it's fairly likely that Danks will look better than last year, that also isn't saying much, because at the end of last year, he looked absolutely pitiful. Colon at $4 million would be a good investment; if he sucks, it's cheap enough that the Sox can just let him sit on the DL all year or cut him. But if he's strong and produces, it's a hell of an investment and could be the difference between the Sox going .500 and making the playoffs.
  7. QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Feb 21, 2008 -> 09:48 AM) I think coming off the physical problems with his arm and at this point of the year a minor league deal with incentives would be appropriate Have fun not signing him then
  8. QUOTE(Shadows @ Feb 21, 2008 -> 01:39 AM) It would be easier to respect but his opinion that drinking will make you an alcoholic and make you cheat on your girlfriend is wrong and just plain misinformed You can have a nice time, while drinking, without being an incoherent douche You can also be an incoherent douche, like I am half the time, and still not cause a world of problems. The worst thing I did this past Saturday was jump in some snow in my t-shirt. That was a hell of a good time.
  9. Sox top 10, 2007 Sweeney, Fields, Cunningham, Carter QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Feb 21, 2008 -> 01:52 AM) Chris Carter as well maybe? Going into last year, Carter sucked at Low-A in the 50 PAs he had there Cunningham was definitely the 3rd best offensive prospect QUOTE(SoxAce @ Feb 21, 2008 -> 01:53 AM) You been drinking tonight Blake? Nope; I forgot about Fields, that's why I thought Cunningham was the 2nd best. Sweeney was first, then Fields (who I forgot about), and Cunningham. And even if I were drinking, it would make sense all the same.
  10. Yeah, this stuff happens. When people get drunk, they start to break things and piss in funny spots
  11. QUOTE(The Beast @ Feb 20, 2008 -> 04:02 PM) (Yes, Eastern Illinois University has a bunch of idiots who don't care all that much about their education, but about partying.) I think that's more schools than you realize. And I wouldn't characterize them all as "idiots," since that would classify me as an idiot. I get drunk almost every weekend, enjoy my life, go to class and do well in college. Over the last two semesters, I've managed a 3.4 GPA and I don't see any reason for that to stop this semester, and I'm getting drunk probably more often this semester. For some, that's apart of finding yourself. For others, it's not. But just because people party doesn't mean they don't care for their education; they are going to school and not living at home for a reason.
  12. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Feb 20, 2008 -> 11:43 PM) Don't know if I would have Cunningham in our 2 position prospects either witesoxfan. Would maybe have Ryan Sweeney in there ahead of him, but it'd be pretty close. Either way, Cunningham is a VERY solid prospect. We need more hits like him in the 7th-8th round in the future. I forgot about Fields. He was the 3rd best position prospect in the organization behind Fields and Sweeney.
  13. I'm really hoping the Cubs just trade for Roberts soon so we can end all this talk...I really doubt the White Sox would have traded one of their top 2 offensive prospects for a 2Bman to give up on him in less than half a season
  14. QUOTE(The Beast @ Feb 20, 2008 -> 07:12 PM) Maybe the Sox could do with Colon what they did with Loaiza's deal. Would that work? No, Loaiza didn't have a Cy Young nor 146 wins under his belt. He also signed in a pretty weak market, while the market is up right now. Colon is probably going to get $3-5 mill with an option for next year that's in the $11-15 mill range.
  15. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 20, 2008 -> 09:21 PM) I read that and it makes sense. but then I keep thinking of Mags. He was barely walking when he signed that Tiger contract. There's also a difference between a free agent with the best agent in the game and a player who is under contract for this season with the best agent in the game, when, in the case of Joe Crede, the agent means absolutely nothing other than the fact that he's not likely to sign a long-term deal. Crede's trade value is garbage right now and likely will remain so until opening day.
  16. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Feb 20, 2008 -> 03:39 PM) You realize CF is where Swisher played the most at in 2007, correct? Not really sure what you classify "rarely" as, but I don't think thats it. You sure do have a strong opinion of Swisher for NEVER seeing him play in CF.... You mean a third of the season and the most games of anyone on the Athletics doesn't classify as rarely? Preferably, the Athletics would have played Swisher in RF, but that's because Mark Kotsay is a fantastic CFer. He was injured much of last year, and is now in Atlanta. I think people really underestimate Swisher, and I think he is in for a monster season.
  17. Not gonna be a 2 year deal, I'd bet money on that. There probably will be an option for the 2nd year, but not much more than that.
  18. QUOTE(WinningUgly85 @ Feb 20, 2008 -> 03:39 PM) I don't know if I really like this deal if it works out. Bartolo has the ability to be dominate on the mound only if he is healthy. I still think we should have delt Crede to the Giants for Noah Lowry. The Giants would not and will not deal Lowry for Crede; Lowry actually has value, while Crede has virtually none. There was a time when that idea was thought to be possible, but it has proven to be impossible.
  19. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Feb 20, 2008 -> 03:03 PM) From Merkin's column yesterday: That has to make Quentin the favorite for the LF job. One can only hope so for the sake of the offense.
  20. Insane itself still has two meanings...if someone is insane, they are a psycho or insane by trial; if someone does something insane, it's so damn cool that you cant believe they did it. Also, though I don't know if I'd suggest using it, the N-word has adopted a different ending nowadays and means something completely different, although that's more of an interracial thing than just general slang.
  21. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Feb 20, 2008 -> 01:56 PM) Have you ever even watched Swisher in CF or Owens for that matter? Owens is nothing special out there, he's fast sure but he provides no other defensive ability aside form his closing speed. From what I've seen of Swisher he's not that bad out there, pretty close to average with a damn good arm which will allow him to hold hitters to singles on balls hit softly in front of him, unlike another OF on the roster who possesses a puss arm. When you factor in the projected difference in offensive production between Quentin and Owens suddenly the nominal difference between Swisher and Owens in center doesn't look so bad. If he Swisher has a plus arm, that means the Sox would have 3 plus arms in the outfield (assuming Quentin is in fact the left fielder). That would be the first time in a long time that has happened.
  22. QUOTE(ChiSox_Sonix @ Feb 20, 2008 -> 01:32 PM) But the other side to that statement is, if he is close to or surpasses 65 SB doesnt that mean he probably is getting on at a rate that wouldnt make it a bad thing for him to have a lot of ABs? Vince Coleman stole 107 bases with a .301 OBP in 1986. And more recently, Podsednik stole 70 bases with a .313 OBP, as has been brought up in this thread once already. It's almost assured of being a bad thing if Owens has anywhere close to 65 SBs, and he is good enough at stealing and will run enough that he could probably steal 65 bases while getting on at a .320 clip and slugging a massive .350. I want nothing to do with Owens near the top of the lineup nor starting in CF. He is not a good player, and he needs to show that he can hit for some sort of power or ridiculous average before he should be called up again. Also, another thing to consider when making "adjusted slugging percentages" is how it affects their OBP as well; if a stolen base counts as an "extra total base," then a caught stealing counts as a regular out.
  23. He better not get enough plate appearances to get anywhere close to 65 SBs, unless its at AAA.
