I really don't know why or how anyone would give Andy Gonzalez anything less than a C. As far as I'm concerned, he stayed healthy and played a lot of positions, so he gets an A. That in itself says a lot about a guy. I mean, the guy hit like s***, but who honestly didn't expect that? He's the 32nd man on a 25 man roster, it just so happens that the White Sox are so bad that he was the 27th or 28th man. Had the team been in contention, it's an entirely different story, but seriously, kudos to Andy for health and flexibility, and thanks for busting your balls kid.

I don't think there's any way you'd be able to make a deal for Johan without giving up Fields. They'll take his mediocre defense at 3B. I mean like, the least I imagine you'd possibly have to give up would be DLS, Gio, and Fields, and I think even that is cutting it short. Include Russell and Sweeney and then it's probably good.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 05:42 PM) I didn't mean to single you out there, BTW -- I wanted to put Wite's "I'm not so hot on the Mets either" in there but you replied before I could get it in there. Anyways... Pitching is a concern? I guess it can be seen that way, although they already have Maine and Perez locked up for very little for the next couple seasons. Either would be Atlanta's third best starter. There's also Humber and Pelfrey -- Pelfrey's stock has fallen but I'd guess, worst case scenario, at least one of them makes it as a starter, the other as a reliever. They're still loaded on offense. Wright and Reyes are premier players, Beltran is top three at his position and is only 30. Milledge is 22 and is already a league average hitter. If not for some injuries he'd be considered a top prospect. Then there's Martinez, a top ten prospect in all of baseball, and Gomez, who at the very very worst will be a good 4th OFer. And they have gobs and gobs of money to spend. Not that money is everything, but is there any team in the NL East who even has half the payroll of the Mets (serious question -- it might not be 2-to-1, but it's gotta be pretty close, yes)? Their pitching is very good, and it seems Rick Peterson always has good pitching staffs. He's probably a top 3 pitching coach in the game because of what he does. There are parts of their offense going forward which I'm not fond of; I'm not sure what to expect out of Delgado from this point on, though I'd imagine this is more an exception than anything and he should be good for about a 120 OPS+ next year, which would be good. Lo Duca's also 35 and his offense has already started tailing off, so they'll need a replacement at catcher at some point in time as well. Second base also seems to be a hole going forward, but if they retain Castillo, they'll atleast have someone adequate enough until they can develop a player. I'll definitely say that the forecast for the Mets future at this point looks much better than the Braves, with or without Peavy going to Atlanta after next year.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 04:47 PM) I'm not going to get into their prospects. Go to Talkingchop.com if you're interested. Besides that, I'm done with this speculatory, "Mets trade for Santana!" speculation. Even if they did, the Mets don't look that good to me going forward. They've got some aging guys and I just don't feel good about their roster going into the future. Then how am I to give you credit for suggesting the Braves would be able to trade for Peavy? I can't. How am I going to be able to be able to believe that the Braves minor league system is still good after they traded for Teix? I can't. So how am I supposed to consider any of this factual rather than a biased slant? I can't. Besides that, I'm not a big fan of the Mets going forward either; however, they have three players they can pretty much count on to be very good in Beltran, Wright, and Reyes, and their pitching staff - patchwork as it has been - has been marvelous all season long. If you put Johan on that team, you are looking at something similar to what Minnesota has done the past 5 years, but with a payroll twice as large. However, I'm not a big fan of the Braves going forward though either; what do they have to build around? Chipper is 35, Andruw is gone, Teix is gone after next year, and Smoltz is 40; it seems to me that Schuerholtz traded for Teix because he realizes his window is closing quickly, probably more quickly than the Mets. We'll see though.

Trading Fields and/or Danks for a star

QUOTE(Middle Buffalo @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 12:52 PM) I agree. I don't think the Red Sox and Yankees being in the same division and spending four times as much as the Devil Rays has anything to do with the DRays lack of success. It's Crawford's fault for sure. I was being slightly facetious, trying to poke fun at Pratt talking about how the Giants haven't won with Bonds on the team; I did a poor job of it. That's obviously the main reason why. -
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 06:23 AM) Peavy himself was talking about how he's probably going to be traded because the Padres can't afford him long-term. That doesn't change the fact that the Padres have control of him over the next 2 years. If he's dealt, it will be after 2008, but with two years left of him, it'd be a mistake to deal him now, and Kevin Towers absolutely knows that. Can you tell me which pieces exactly? I looked up and down their AAA and AA rosters, and found like 6 potential prospects based on numbers, and 3 of those were relievers. I don't know scouting reports nor do I know names of some of their more talented players, so I'm a bit curious. But the Padres not trading Peavy stops the Braves from trading for Peavy. I can see it after next year; not this year. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Santana were dealt this offseason for reasons already explained.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 10:15 PM) The NFL is all about team image. Unlike the NBA which has marketed their stars, the NFL likes to market their teams. This is on par with say a record setting slugger on steroids. I think they pretty much threw McGwire to the wolves -

Trading Fields and/or Danks for a star

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 10:23 AM) Haha. I wouldn't put it past Fields to suck terribly next year. I'm not sure he will. I don't know what he'll do. But let's not go nuts and start hypothesizing. I wouldn't put it past Gavin Floyd to win the Cy Young award next year...but strangers things...have...happened? I agree with the initial part. Fields can perform on a wide range of spectrums and I won't be surprised one bit. He could quite honestly put up Ryan Howard's exact line this year - minus about 30 walks - or he could hit about .210 next year and neither would surprise me in the least. All I was merely trying to point out is that Carl Crawford is extremely overrated around here. People act as if he is some savior player, but there's a reason the Devil Rays haven't won even with him on the team all this time, and that's because he's not much more than a very good player (ie, he's not a star in the league other than with his name). Trading Josh Fields for anyone but an impact player at this point is silly. And I don't think anything stranger than Gavin Floyd winning the Cy Young next year has ever happened in the history of the world. I mean like seriously. -
Trading Fields and/or Danks for a star

QUOTE(NCsoxfan @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 10:17 AM) What if he could get a Carl Crawford type player? Or another all star type? I am not saying it is likely, but we shouldn't put it past him... This team needs more cheap production up and down the lineup, and Fields is part of that. The only way he couldn't is if Larry Beinfest lost his sanity for a moment and traded Miggy for DLS, Fields, and Gio. That would be absolutely hilarious though. And the name Carl Crawford is far too popular around here. I wouldn't put it against Fields to put together a better offensive season next season than Crawford. -

It has to be virtually impossible for KW to deal Fields right now. -
QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 12:00 AM) He should win the MVP. I just get the sick feeling the voters will f*** up again and give it to wright. Pujols should have gotten it last year, but didn't because Howard almost hit 60. I honestly don't see any way Prince doesn't get it. 50 is a big number, and the Brewers aren't completely dead yet.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 10:10 PM) It's very possible that the Mets trade for Santana. It's equally possible that the Braves trade for Jake Peavy. If the Mets trade for Santana, then I'll re-evaluate but otherwise, the Braves should really be very good next year, especially with Glavine. How are the Twins' and Padres' situations comparable in the least though? Minnesota's looking at a new GM group taking over, they'll almost certainly lose one of their franchise players, and they have absolutely no offensive talent in one of the toughest divisions in baseball. They move into a new ballpark in 09/10, and having a solid team to bring into the stadium would be a great way to open the new ballpark up. The NL West, on the other hand, is much easier to win than the AL Central, and the Padres have a much more solid core in place (Peavy and Young, along with any 3 starters they pick up on the waiver wire and any 6 arms they pick up to put in their pen...that's pretty much how their entire pitching staff works). Also, though I'm a bit unfamiliar with the Braves system, it seemed they pretty much raped it when they traded for Teix. Adding to that, Peavy won't be a free agent until after 2009 season (technically, it is after '08, but there's a team option worth $8 million for 2009, so I'm just counting that because there's almost no way I can see them not picking that up barring some catastrophic event). It just seems to me that the Padres won't be looking to trade Peavy nor do the Braves have enough to acquire him. Perhaps I'm reading that wrong, but I seriously doubt that, and I'm also not sure the Braves have enough to sway the Twins to take their offer over the Mets if both were to go after Johan. I could see the Mets willing to include about 5 players simply because they'll feel as though they'll be able to resign Johan long-term.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 09:32 PM) Oh, yeah. Hella lineup, good enough bullpen. No dominant closer but that isn't a MUST. They've got some good relievers, though. And Smoltz-Hudson is very, very good. If they make it, they'd be very, very good. Goddamn, I'd love that. You know what's strange? They offered us Renteria + Jo-Jo Reyes, it's believed, for Garland. For the life of me I can't quite figure out why not. If the Braves pick up, say, Glavine next year, they should win that division easy. What's honestly stopping Minaya from offering half of his minor league system for Johan? If I had one surprise to throw out this offseason, it's Johan getting traded. With a new GM in place, and the Twins not being able to develop a hitter (outside of Morneau, Mauer, and Cuddyer...they're a small payroll organization, so they need more than that), I wouldn't be surprised in the least to see Minnesota take a package absolutely loaded with talent from a team willing to give it for Johan and to then start the rebuilding. I'd put it at about 75% that the Twins shop him, 10% they get an offer they're willing to make, and 9.5% that the offer comes from the Mets. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I could easily see such a scenario playing out.

QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 09:36 AM) Here's a number - 188. That's how many at bats Andy Gonzalez has this year. That is not a good recipe for winning. It was a pretty piss poor team before Andy Gonzalez had 1 at bat. He was merely a stopgap to guarantee the team lost and secured a very good pick in next year's draft. -
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 10:46 AM) I just think he is now the guy that is going to be abused because "Chicks dig the long ball". I think we have room for Owens with the power hitters we have in the rest of our line up. I also think for the money he is making, we should get used to him, because he is going to be a guy given a big chance to win a job next year. I know people are imaging Torii Hunter or Aaron Rowand in CF, but I will believe it when I see it. Until that point, I really think Jerry is our 2008 starting CF. Welcome to 4th place; I see no way this team can compete with Richar, Owens, and Fields all in the lineup with Widge-knows who on the bench. If there's a spot on next year's roster for Jerry Owens - and part of me hopes there is - it better as hell be 4th outfielder and not in the starting lineup. If they were talking about competing next year in June, and then go with Jerry Owens in CF to open the year with about 5 or 6 solid options for the spot in the offseason, you are going to see a lot of pissed off fans, and the offseason will have been a failure (atleast in my eyes). The two key holes that need to be filled in the starting lineup are centerfield and shortstop, while the bench also needs work as well. More pitching never hurts, but the first 3, and especially the first 2, absolutely should be filled.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Sep 24, 2007 -> 10:04 PM) It has been a really long time. They traded Mo Vaughn for Kevin Appier, but both were hasbeens when the move was made (although I still say without that deal they don't win the World Series). Hell, the biggest trade they made was the one that got vetoed (Erstad for Singleton, Garland and another player). The Angels typically make signings, not trades. When they do make trades its typically trading minor league arms or back of the pen arms for other young arms that they like and that Stoneman projects can help the pen for a couple years. Stoneman is also a shark on the waiver wires looking for young guys that he thinks would be good fits (Eckstein would be an example). The last true big move they made would have been the Jose Guillen for Juan Rivera deal (and that was a deal that was kind of forced on them based on Scioscia wanting Guillen out). Oh and the Edmonds for Bottenfield and Kennedy deal. I don't know the circumstances, but I would consider the last big move they made to be the Edmonds deal. Guillen turned into a bit of a cancer, the Erstad deal was vetoed, and the Appier deal was more a bad contract for a bad contract.
