QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 21, 2007 -> 03:28 PM) So what's really the quality difference between a PS2 and PS3 for, say, NHL2K8? The PS2 version likely won't have some of the features the PS3 version does; I know in NCAA Football 08, the XBox was almost a regurgiation of NCAA 07, whereas the 08 version brought in a ton of new features, such as a deeper recruiting engine, high school playoffs, and a completely different feel when it came to the game itself. That, and the graphics will obviously be worse.

Cubs are so gonna win the Series, aren't they? Absolutely everything has gone right for them all year, so why would that stop in the postseason?

Pretty impressive resume. I like it, and Cleveland is a pretty good organization to try and model.

According to this article, Kevin Everett sat up using his own strength recently, and they expect him to be able to walk again within weeks, not months.

Not only did I not realize they were playing this afternoon, but it appears the Sox didn't know they were playing either.

But why buy and learn the text (which is almost assuredly a limited amount of the text, thus paying for information you will not use) when you can just go to class and get the same information without having to spend the $75-200 on a book?

QUOTE(whitesoxin' @ Sep 20, 2007 -> 11:05 AM) I voted for blasting the ball into space because then it would be gone forever and maybe we wouldn't have to hear about it anymore. If the ball was branded, MLB could easily find a way to display the ball without the asterisk showing if they wanted. Plus, blasting the ball into space would be cool to watch. I'd probably talk about it everyday then and mourn the loss of it. That's baseball history that you are destroying. This isn't some ball a doof at a Cubs game touched that "cost" the Cubs a trip to the World Series; it's the 756th home run of one of the greatest players in the history of the game. I hope the vote is rigged and every vote goes towards putting it in the Hall in some way, shape, or form.

I have absolutely no idea what to think about the AL Central going into next year. With the right moves and a s***load of luck, I could see KC even winning the division; it's just so f'ing wide open right now that I don't know who to even think of as the favorite.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 20, 2007 -> 12:53 PM) No. And I don't think it's Schilling, even though that would be just great. Well, I have another idea as to who it may be, but that just bummed me out a bit.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 20, 2007 -> 07:06 AM) Check Gavin Floyd, September 2004. What did that mean in 2005? How about K-Rod in 2002? Or Maggs in 1997? Or even a guy like Johnny Estrada in 2003? I'm not about to compare Gavin to any of those, because none of those comparisons hold true; neither do the comparisons to Fogg, Rauch, or even Floyd himself (because there's no way you can even come close to justifying that Floyd is the same pitcher now that he was in 2004). All cases should be looked at separately and no conclusions should be drawn because of what other people did. I don't think anyone has suggested that Floyd is going to be a good pitcher because of a good September, just that it's not meaningless. All we've said is that if he finished the season well, he should be given the first crack at a shot in the rotation next year, and nothing more. If he earns it, it's his. (BTW, I'm not exactly sure how you can suggest that Floyd was ready - or whatever you're suggesting - based on his numbers in 2004. Good ERA, but his control was terrible and he had a freakishly low home run rate; in comparison, he has a freakishly high home run rate this year - 2.4 HR/9. With a home run rate like that, it's a minor miracle that his ERA is under 6; a lot of that probably has to do with his excellent control thus far. Another good sign - regardless of how many 410 foot flyballs he's given up in Comerica - is that his home run rate has gone down as the season has progressed: 5 HR/9 in July, 2.2 HR/9 in August, and all the way down to 0.5 HR/9 in September)

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 20, 2007 -> 08:33 AM) Sorry I can't link the story, but there's going to be another HGH bust. I just heard it's for a well-known athlete in Massachusetts. If someone can link the story from ESPN, I'd appreciate it. Let the guessing begin....I know who I have my money on. There's only one guy I want it to be.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 20, 2007 -> 01:36 AM) I have no clue why you would want the Phillies to make the playoffs, that's the one team the Cubs would beat the crap out of in the playoffs. If the Phillies get in, the Cubs face the Mets while Philly plays Arizona. If San Diego gets in, the Cubs face Arizona while the Mets face San Diego. Pretty simple really. Of course, Philly winning the East doesn't help much; thus, fathom and willie are hoping the Mets win it and Philly wins the Wild Card. -
first cool one gets it and their name mentioned in MY signature (note to potential designers: Darin Erstad has never been cool in any way, shape, or form)

Just curious here, which means of force is the most likely to leave the kid with as little permanent damage as possible - tasing him or forcefully pinning him to the ground? -
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Sep 20, 2007 -> 12:40 AM) It stems back to when Raul Casanova was called up when the 40 man expanded a few years ago over Ben Davis, I think. "You think, therefore it is."

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Sep 19, 2007 -> 11:44 PM) I'm not completely writing off September performances and I don't think Contreras should start opening day again and Uribe should be our shortstop. It's just funny when we traded for Floyd everybody felt and quoted Philly scouts that he was weak mentally and couldn't handle pressure, yet here he is pitching pretty well in September for a team that has been dead since Memorial Day. I'm sorry, but this performance doesn't mean squat for 2008 and beyond. So Gavin's performance right now means nothing towards his future with the White Sox organization? If you actually believe that Gavin is pitching with no pressure on him, I'm going to find myself in complete disagreement with you. It's a job for next year, and it's an opportunity to prove himself to a major league team; if he doesn't prove himself in the least, he's back to trying to prove himself to any of 30 MLB teams again next year. I also don't understand the knocking of Rauch or Fogg either...they have been very productive pitchers in their own rights. Rauch has turned himself into a cog in the Nationals bullpen, and Josh Fogg has put up a career 4.90 ERA over 1000 innings. If Gavin Floyd can give the Sox 4.90 over 1000, I'd be extremely happy.

Floyd's arm beginning to convert some believers

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 19, 2007 -> 09:58 PM) I'm a big fan of Contreras, but if I were KW, if someone would take his entire contract, I would move him. I wouldn't eat any of it, as there is a possibilty he can still be a good pitcher. I'm one of "those" who takes good results at this time of year in the Sox position with a grain of salt, but 4-2 3.56 ERA his last 7 starts probably will quiet the people who think he is done at least a little. People will then question, I know one in particular, why I would have hope with Contreras but be doubtful of Floyd when Gavin is 24 and Contreras is 57 or whatever. I have more confidence Contreras could be decent because he has done it before, and it wasn't 7 years ago like Darin Erstad. I can understand why, and the answer is simply that Contreras has better stuff. Contreras will probably have better stuff when he's 52 (or 62, depending upon how old he actually is) then Gavin did when he was drafted. I like Gavin's arm for durability purposes (I've brought up Westbrook before and I don't think that's too far out of the realm of possibility), but I'm definitely not about to count on him to be a savior by any means, and if he's traded or let go of, I won't shed a tear. I think a lot of it really depends on his velocity. How has his velocity been over the past 3-4 weeks or so? If it's even in the 90-93 region, he should be effective, and if by chance a miracle of the baseball gods occurred and it shot back up to 93-96, I'd pencil him into the 3rd slot in the rotation and forget about it until late May. I'm also not about to just trade him just to get his contract off the books; odds are, you'll either have to get lucky to find a pitcher that can be as good as Contreras even at $10 mill (and I seem to recall the free agent market being pretty poor this season for starters), you'll have to make a trade for a starter, or cross your fingers and hope Haeger/Floyd/Gio/Egbert can handle his spot, so I'll take the risk/reward at $10 mill for Contreras rather than others on the market. However, if you can land a legitimate top 10 prospect for him, I would move him...I don't think that's a question at all. I'm also curious if the Sox are concerned about possible lingering injuries; his sciatic injury last year was a pretty big blow for the team, because once he started going downhill, pretty much the rest of the rotation did too; that was mid-May as I recall, and shortly thereafter Vazquez and (I think) Freddy were just absolutely awful in June, Buehrle joined them in July and didn't pitch well again until this season, and Garland tanked in September. Not that I'm blaming Contreras, just saying his injury may have started a bit of a snowball effect. -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 19, 2007 -> 12:41 PM) The team hasn't had anything on the line but Gavin sure has. I figure with another good appearance or two, he should be a favorite to make the pitching staff next year.
