QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 31, 2007 -> 12:39 AM) If he is non-tendered by the Padres would a Jim Thome/Morgan Ensberg 2008 platoon be an acceptable/plausible scenario? I'm thinking no since Morgan would probably be looking for a team that would offer him more than say 100-150 ABs next season. Ensberg Vs Lefties: AVG OBP SLG OPS 02: 32 PA, .320 .469 .640 1.109 03: 119 PA, .316 .429 .592 1.021 04: 116 PA, .282 .351 .408 .759 05: 163 PA, .299 .411 .575 .986 06: 136 PA, .245 .463 .553 1.016 07: 107 PA, .260 .336 .479 .816 A 2006 Thome/Ensberg platoon would have theoretically put up a .303/.456/.702/1.159 collective line w/ 45 HR and a 114:104 BB:K ratio. Kevin Mench maybe? Career .917 OPS vs lefties. I'd take Ensberg at 3B next season over Crede, but maybe that's just me.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 02:27 PM) You don't draft by position. You take the best player available. People also seem not to remember the name Chris Carter...perhaps it's because it's a common name, perhaps it's because he's in low-A, or perhaps it's simply because there are a million ways to get an .800 OPS out of the 1B position. Dmitri Young and Carlos Pena were both signed to MLC's before the season...you don't find 2 diamonds in the rough quite like that in every free agency in the same position, but 1Bman are not hard to acquire. If I were looking to draft a 1Bman, it better be someone who projects to be Prince Fielder or better within 3 years.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 07:29 PM) Not random. It's time for Jeckle to take hostility out on anyone who might possibly threaten the return of The Legend. Well Rowand's loss was the reason the Sox didn't make the playoffs last year, so it's completely understandable. Aren't we supposed to drink or something, or is that just SSS?
-
An GIF file of Aaron Rowand running into a wall with some catchy little phrase would be a perfect button to have for these kinds of threads.

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 08:47 PM) what's even funnier is that people are actually annoyed by having to read something in CAPS, as if someone were genuinely yelling. I love this internet thing. I was really just wondering if his caps lock was stuck...and it does look like yelling, so I kinda mocked him. Anyways dude, a new keyboard costs like $20-30...you couldn't have saved up that much in 4 years? If you can't, then stop buying mountain dew.
-
dude, seriously, is your caps lock button permanently stuck?
-
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 07:32 PM) Well... the team has hit rock bottom. I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that the threads have too. Between this one and CAPS MAN the board looks like a tornado of crap hit it. THERE'S A s***CLOUD COMING, RUN FOR YOUR LIVES

QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 07:08 PM) Please tell me you people are kidding... Hunter is an overrated defensive player who aside from this year has been treading water to be called mediocore offensively and we need to play him 18 million a year. At least AROW won't be near as expensive and actually has drive. Hunter is just a selfish prick with a history of choking when it counts... Hunter has plenty of drive. Jamie Burke will tell you as much.
-
well that was definitely random I would also like the courtroom to know that I would pay money to see that.
-
Actually dude, you were wrong. They didn't have a firesale at all, unless you count Mackowiak and Iguchi selling off the team. SO SUCK IT

woulda been cooler if you spelled his name right ahhh, that's better

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 01:58 PM) I think this is pretty close. QUOTE(danman31 @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 02:10 PM) They have something similar a minor or major league team in every continental state but the Dakotas. Well f you baseball. and the Sioux Falls Canaries so don't count

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 03:37 PM) Seemed like the proper thread to do this in, copied below is Flash Tizzle's response to my specific query about whether he'd be willing to compose a letter to White Sox personnel and ask for responses to the topic he brings up just about every day. That is, the amateur draft issues, dealing with Boras, finding players in Latin America, acquiring prospects etc. I think everyone knows the song by now. Here is the response - (note: the other thread was a game thread and was closed and moved). "Several times? I recall once, and that's several posts above. I'm interested in improving our minor league system, don't get me wrong, but not to the extent where I'd physically take time composing an email/letter and address it to Hahn, Williams, Reinsdorf, Wilder, whomever else. I'm not interested in simple answers. It just doesn't seem worth the time. The real questions I'd ask, such as what exactly are our scouts in Latin American doing, or pleaing for them to quit the ridiculous opposition to Boras, probably wouldn't get true responses. I'm interested in results. What we can see on the field. They can bulls*** me all they want about taking steps to improve international scouting and their philosophical approach to drafting, but until these changes are evident on the diamond, what does it matter? I also understand it may take time for changes to be seen. However, if we're looking to contend for any division titles, these changes need to occur sooner rather than later. We can't have every prospect promoted struggling; which seems to happen nearly every time." Ok Flash I get it, you're not interested in physically taking time composing an email/letter and address it to whomever, it isn't worth the time to you. But it is worth the time to you to post the same stuff over and over on a message board, hoping against hope that White Sox personnel will see your posts, scratch their heads, and say hey, we should change things, this guy on the message board is a genius. Basically, it is easier to complain on a message board vs. getting specific answers to questions, because, well, it feels good to complain. I tell you what, I will compose the letter(s), I will ask the tough questions, I will do my best to arrange an interview(s) with the appropriate White Sox personnel to get some answers. And I suspect some of the answers will surprise you, but those answers likely won't resonate with you because you have a propensity to think that whatever they say will be "BS". From my view, I will take the steps necessary to get answers. Don't mention it, it's my pleasure. And by the way, this is nothing personal. I just thought since you spent so much time addressing these issues every day on this board, you might be interested in stepping up to the plate so others on this site can hear some answers from those who actually have influence. And my apologes if you hadn't seen my 3 previous requests about this, they have always been in threads responding to your posts on this very topic but I do know threads get closed/moved etc. so I do understand if you didn't see my posts. That'd actually be really cool and really interesting to hear. If you are actually going to do that, I'd be very intrigued to hear the results.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 05:06 PM) Today's question is, will Aaron Harang be screwed out of the Cy Young for the second year in a row? Last year, he went 16-11 with a 3.76 ERA for a below .500, missed the postseason Reds team. His led the NL in wins (16), complete games (6), strikeouts (216), and games started (35). Not only was he screwed out of the Cy Young Award, but he became the first pitcher in MLB history to lead his league in wins, k's, and complete games and not get A SINGLE VOTE for Cy Young, not even a 10th place vote. This year, heading into September with a team 11 games under .500, Harang is 14-3 with a 3.51 ERA. He is 1st in the NL in win/loss percentage, is 2nd in innings, games started, shutouts, and strikeouts, and 3rd in wins. And this is a guy whose had 4 wins blown by his bullpen. If he were to get screwed out of the Cy Young again, that'd be a damn shame. Aaron Harang sucks

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 12:09 AM) Check out the first inning. J. C. Holt singles on a pop up to third baseman Christopher Kelly. Carl Loadenthal singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Christopher Kelly. J. Holt scores. Carl Loadenthal to 3rd. Throwing error by third baseman Christopher Kelly. Diory Hernandez singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Christopher Kelly. T. J. Bohn called out on strikes. Mark Jurich doubles (31) on a line drive to right fielder David Cook. Carl Loadenthal scores. Diory Hernandez to 3rd. Clint Sammons walks. Matt Young singles on a ground ball to left fielder Adam Shabala. Diory Hernandez scores. Mark Jurich to 3rd. Clint Sammons to 2nd. Van Pope hit by pitch. Mark Jurich scores. Clint Sammons to 3rd. Matt Young to 2nd. Paul Bennett strikes out swinging. J. C. Holt called out on strikes. Looks like 1, maybe 2 hard hit balls in the entire sequence, and 4 runs scored. Makes his outing look way worse than it actually is. Anything to support Egbert.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 12:51 AM) This hints at the question I've been asking all along... Robo keeps saying Hunter is going to get huge huge money, but who is going to give it to him? The only two teams in the AL who I can see bidding for Jones and/or Hunter are Baltimore and Texas. In the NL it's more of the same story -- there's some mid-sized payroll teams who can use a CFer, but none that strike me as teams who are going to pay $18 per year for either of the two afformentioned names. I'm really starting to latch onto the Andruw Jones bandwagon. I think most metrics still have Jones playing well-above average defensively in CF, and I'd say he's a good bet to rebound. Perhaps the Sox could get him on a contract similar to the one Boras got for JD Drew with the Dodgers -- the Sox get Jones at a (relative) discount for the first two years -- say, $12 million per -- but before the third year, either Jones gets a big bump in the contract or is able to opt out of the deal. I know people say there's no chance of it happening because of Boras, but I can see this being a case where the Sox actually have a shot. $12 mill for a top 8(-ish) centerfielder who KW has had a boner for in the past, and it may only take a 2-year committment? Sign me up.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 08:57 PM) People actually think Harris would have this good a season if he weren't in as good an organization in the Braves? In a place like Minnesota? In a place that stresses fundamentals and is known for excellent coaching and analysis? In, perhaps, Oakland, even if it isn't necessarily known for speedsters? Guess I'm crazy. Yeah, I do.

If a player is put on the 15 day DL, they can remain on it until the team sees it justified that said player can be brought back...that could be 15 days or 59 days. The point of the 60 day DL suggests that you will not have this player for quite some time - duh; by putting a player on the 60 day DL, a roster on the 40-man roster is opened, thus allowing for someone else to be called up who was previously not on the 40 man roster. When said player on the 60 day is ready to rejoin the team, a 40 man roster spot then has to be opened up for him. I'm not sure if there is an exact limit to the number of players you can put on the DL; you would imagine it would be 15 due to the difference between the 25 man and 40 man roster, but I'd imagine it's possible to carry 24 players on a team, thus allowing for 16 on the DL. Regardless, it's not something that will likely ever happen without someone going on the 60-day DL first, so I don't believe there's real reason to instate a maximum number of players on the DL.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 10:54 PM) its sad that this team has so little to chear for on the big league team, and in the minors....people are starting to consider that the sox have the worst farm system in all of baseball....there isnt one position prospect im actually excited about right now....sweeney i guess could still turn out all right, but i still honestly dont see him as ever becoming an impact player....maybe an average OFer....id honestly be thrilled if he turned into a milton bradley type...but im not sure that hell even get there..and how sad is it that our best position prospect barely projects out to milton bradley?? I have more hope for Carter than I do Sweeney, and Carter's like 3-4 years away still. Sweeney just has no power at all, and from what I've seen, just doesn't have the quick wrists necessary to get around the inside pitch. If he can't do that, I'm not sure he'd turn into even Sean Burroughs. I've always been a fan of Sweeney, because he has a wonderful looking swing, but it just seems he's not strong enough to handle MLB pitching on a regular basis. I do like the pitching...I figure this bunch will produce probably 2-3 starters (Eg, Gio, and Haeger come to mind), a few relievers, and there are some pretty exciting arms in the lower minors; DLS is almost assured of being a very useful arm for a few years if he's able to stay healthy - either in the pen or the rotation - to go along with Poreda and Griffith (though they did just recently sign). It's not the best pitching depth in the league, but it should atleast be productive.
-
The thought of Jones coming in at a discount really doesn't seem realistic to me, what with Boras as his agent. Boras got Magglio a 5 year, $75 mill deal, and there was no guarantee Maggs would ever play again, let alone be a productive player. If Jones gets a discount, it will be at a shade lower than what Boras expects, which is probably 18-20 mill per over 6-7. That said, I figure you're probably looking at a 6 year, $102 mill for Jones, give or take a year or some cash. I'm not about to give that to Jones.

QUOTE(Vance Law @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 08:48 PM) Granted. And that idea sounds good on paper at first look. But if you think about it a little more, having no shortstop out there would leave a pretty big hole on the left side of the infield. It would be as if you were playing with one less player, and I could see a lot of ground balls getting through right there. Also, then, when the SS is supposed to bat, there would be no one there. You're probably looking a high strikeout rate with not a batter, even if he's hitting 9th. But then you also have to realize how much more that would bring in fan support...a team fielding only 8 players? Not sure that's ever been done before. The Sox would bring in flocks of people from all over the world. That's like a Veeckian promotion right there. -
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 01:03 PM) my freshman year roomate was the worst. He didnt go anything, never went out and only watch the Drew Carey show from morning until night. We literally didnt speak for 3 months straight w o w ..... same roommate, known him all my life

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 01:35 PM) That lineup is still so slllllooooowwwww. I actually prefer richar batting #2. The core of the team is already really slow; if also plan on bringing Crede and Pierzynski back, it gets just that much slower.

QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 09:18 AM) And who was in charge of the minor league system under Schueler....that's right -- it was Kenny Williams! And then look at the talent levels of the 95-00 teams compared to the 2001-2006 teams. It's not even close.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 03:36 PM) Unfortunately, body type simply is a poor way of judging whether or not a person was on steroids. Show me before and after pictures illustrating how he gained 50 pounds of muscle in a ridiculous amount of time, like a few others we know, and then I'll start to buy it. As we all know, there are people who can look exactly like that just naturally with a vigorous enough workout program. On the other hand, there are people who could never look like that in a million years without the juice, and there are people who juice who in a million years will never get to that point. I still have very, very little confidence in the NFL's testing program, maybe even less than MLB simply because MLB has gotten all of the publicity thanks to Mr. Tetrahydrogestrinone and that's focused people on the quality of the tests, but body type alone simply can't be an argument. Ahem. Mr. Home Run King...TYVM
