QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Aug 18, 2007 -> 11:12 PM) If AIM wasn't so awful about C/Ping convo, I would show you all how worthless Heads is right now. I'll vouch for it

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 18, 2007 -> 05:26 PM) Who is going to play CF next year for the Twins? Am I missing an up-and-coming prospect in their system? They're going to have a helluva time replacing the 120 OPS+ that Hunter has given them the past two seasons... I hope its Tyner.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Aug 18, 2007 -> 08:13 PM) I agree completely, but if my choices are down to him, Erstad, and Podsednik for LF and leading off, I'm afraid I'd have to choose Owens. You? One bullet and a gun.

Will Paul Konerko pass Frank Thomas's Sox HR record?

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 18, 2007 -> 09:17 PM) I don't see his hip allowing him to play 8 more seasons with the White Sox. I do, but I don't see him being able to maintain his power. Paulie's a good enough hitter than he can hit .300 with no problem, but if/when his hip starts breaking down, he's probably going to struggle to hit 20 homers. -
QUOTE(Soxfest @ Aug 18, 2007 -> 02:17 PM) KW says no in season contract talks but yet signs MB and JD in season. I do not believe ANYTHING that KW says about anything anymore. So you find a way to spin this into a negative light. lol

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 17, 2007 -> 02:39 PM) We are also talking about a vastly different economic culture. That money for them was big money for them, just like it is now, so it's not that off. And it's still $21 million

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 17, 2007 -> 01:51 PM) The Twins have been fairly good about not letting the faces of their franchise leave. Like Kirby Puckett. It is not a given for Santana to leave via free agency. The most Puckett EVER made in a season was 7.2 mill. We are talking 3 times that amount for Johan Santana over the course of 5-6 years.

When has Carl Pohlad ever opened his checkbook?

that's a bummer dude...really coulda used his bat in LF

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 17, 2007 -> 12:09 PM) Santana's lost a little heat but he will be effective, barring injury, for plenty of years. Speaking of his contract, I'm not so sure he's gone for good. So many good pitchers are staying, and clubs realize the value of guys like that. Not to mention that Santana is truly the face of the Minnesota Twins. How much of a discount can he give him? It's been brought up in this thread that Zambrano gave the Cubs a discount, and he's still the highest paid starter with a multi-year contract in the history of the game. If Santana gives a discount to the Twins, he's earning $21 mill a year over 5 years; I really doubt either side wants to make that deal.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 15, 2007 -> 02:42 PM) Think about how smart he would look if he quit at the end of last year and someone else was the manager. That guy would be bashed to no end, and probably would have been canned as well. We would hear how Ozzie would never let this happen under his watch. I'm not an Ozzie fan, but I really think managers get way too much credit for wins, and probably too much blame for losses. I've always felt that managers effect about 10 games in the final season standings. In 2005, the Sox had the talent to win 90 games, but due to the freshness Ozzie still provided, and how well everything worked out for the club, they won 99 games. I felt the '06 team had about 96 wins in them, but Ozzie putting Mackowiak in CF for a third of the games really hurt the club long term, and letting Podsednik leadoff all year really hurt the team as well, so I figure that cost them about 6 games. Really, Ozzie isn't the reason this team is terrible; that all falls on the players and KW.

QUOTE(Yossarian @ Aug 15, 2007 -> 02:19 PM) As bad as Navarro was, Floyd isn't even close to that effective yet. I've been following the Sox longer than most here have been alive, and I'm trying to think of a starting pitcher who's looked and performed worse. I'm still trying. I think I should call a truce on this. Enough of Sox fans beating each other up over this guy. Obviously lots of you want to, or need to believe in him. I see no Maddux, or Garland, or Verlander in him. Well, you threw out a ridiculous statement, so I threw one right back. A 1% chance of being one of the worst starters in the game? Come on. I also don't care how bad Navarro was with the Sox, he signed as a 30 year old having thrown 1000 some innings. s***ty as Floyd is, and terrible as his splits are (9.00 ERA in his last 100 innings or something like that), he's still 24. Perhaps he doesn't even turn into Jason Grilli, but if you don't find out now, and he then goes on to put up 5 years of 4.25 ERA baseball somewhere else because he was given a shot, then you are not only kicking yourself, but you have hurt the s*** out of your organization. There is absolutely no harm in seeing what Floyd can bring to the table - N-O-N-E - and yet people are against it, like the Sox are competing for a division title. If anything, Floyd is helping the White Sox right now in two ways; first, in that his sucking insures he won't be on the team next year, and secondly, that his sucking will move the Sox up 2-3 slots in the draft next year. And, best case scenario, Floyd figures s*** out in the last month or two here and comes back next year and he is an effective pitcher for the White Sox, and everyone here eats major crow. I don't believe Floyd is anything more than a AAAA pitcher, but there remains a shot at him being a good pitcher in the majors, and he's out of options next year. So, if they don't see what he's about this year, he's gone. For some of you, that'd be a blessing (because you are seemingly rooting against the guy), but for the White Sox, it's a terrible move both baseball and personnel wise, and it would be a damn shame if he left the organization next year and then went on to turn into even an average longman out of a bullpen for someone else.

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Aug 15, 2007 -> 10:32 AM) Not sure what this post means, but I never said nor would I ever even insinuate the Twins have a lousy farm system. He's just saying that you don't have to pay $7 mill for the 29th pick in the draft to have a good minor league system. If you scout well, and you develop well, your minor league system will be well. If anything, he's agreeing with what you are stating.
-
QUOTE(Yossarian @ Aug 15, 2007 -> 12:44 PM) I disagree with your math. I give Floyd a 1% shot at being about as good as Jaime Navarro was when he pitched for us. and a 99% chance of being better

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 12, 2007 -> 05:15 PM) QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Aug 12, 2007 -> 03:25 PM) Haeger has absolutely no shot at being an above average major league pitcher. Gavin Floyd does. Based on what? QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 12, 2007 -> 09:39 PM) Its a pretty bold move to say he has no chance, but Floyd does. Haeger has had just as much, if not more success in the minors than Floyd and I look at Tim Wakefield when I say be patient with Haeger. Charlie hasn't been throwing the knuckler that long. Wakefield started out great for Pittsburgh but the next season was awful in Pittsburgh and the minor leagues, the following season struggled at AAA, got released, but has been a pretty decent pitcher for the past 13 seasons in Boston. I would say there is a far better chance of Haeger being an average pitcher than there is of Floyd matching Wakefield's career. What exactly are you arguing again? I've said before that we already know what Haeger is, and that's a 5.00 ERA, without ever having him set foot in the rotation. I don't find it to be a bold statement, and I may be wrong and he may turn into a 4.50 ERA starter. So, he turns from a 5 starter to a 4 starter. Or he may bounce around from team to team only to find himself in Japan by the age of 32, ala Jared Fernandez (though he was 33), and never find success in the majors. Whatever the case, I think you'll agree that over the course of his career, Haeger will not be an above average starting pitcher. However, for every Chad Durbin, Ruben Quevedo, Bob Wolcott, John Snyder, Mark Thompson, Carlton Loewer, Brian Rose, Jose Acevedo, Sean Douglass, etc, etc, there is one Roy Halladay. Or perhaps Jon Garland or Jeremy Bonderman (age aside, because that's not the argument). Odds are against him, and I would honestly be surprised if he were on the roster come next April, but that doesn't change the fact that the possibility remains that he can become an above average major league pitcher. And all I was saying was that Floyd's 1% shot at being an above average major league starting pitcher is better than Haeger's 0% shot.

QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Aug 14, 2007 -> 11:28 AM) Dye and Rowand both will sign at a discount so why not ? Just curious as to how you know this or why you believe it. Rowand wants to be back, and he's made that very clear, but that doesn't mean he's going to accept $6 mill a year for 3 years to come to Chicago when he can get $10 mill a year over 4 to play elsewhere (or perhaps he would, but then he'd be getting about half of what he could get, which is nice for the Sox but flat out idiotic on Rowand's part). And quite frankly, a discount for Dye could easily mean 3 years, $12 mill per, or 2 years, $13-14 mill per and a team option for the 3rd year, because he could potentially get $14-15 mill on the open market. That's a f***ton of money too. If they are both willing to sign at a considerable discount...meaning Rowand for 6-8 mill per, depending on years, and Dye at 9-11 mill per...then this question should not be "Dye OR Rowand?", but rather "Dye AND Rowand?"

QUOTE(chuckywang @ Aug 14, 2007 -> 02:31 AM) This is completely different though. Those were career records that were just a matter of time before they were reached. You could see it coming. This is a streak record that came out of nowhere. Every pitcher in baseball is in the running for this record....all the time. Ya, it still doesn't change the fact that it has happened after tons of milestones have been eclipsed. Bonds, Glavine, ARod, plus Biggio, Thomas, Hoffman, and Sosa. Bad timing really.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Aug 12, 2007 -> 09:46 PM) I don't know... Sweeney, for someone who hasn't proven much, is pretty highly regarded around baseball (baseball america and even rotoworld) as one of better position prospects in baseball. I've seen nothing resembling any sort of a power stroke, and he doesn't look like a good enough hitter to hit .320. He could easily hit .300 and put up an OPS of .750; respectable, but there are tons of players who can put up OPS's of .750.
