  1. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 02:21 AM) No I don't want that outfield. I still think we'll re-sign Dye though, or else sign a 1 year stopgap such as Geoff Jenkins and give Sweeney 1 more year of AAA ball. The difference b/w what you've suggested is that Garland is capable of seasons with an ERA below 4, while that 5th starter combo with a 5.50 ERA would possibly cost us 5-10 games during a season. If you could somehow pull off a Broadway plus non top 10 spect for Hu for example, I would rather make that type of deal. A Fields-Owens-Dye OF, with the bulk of our rotation coming back without Contreras gives me more hope that we can rebound for next season, and I think KW would rather go down that path as well. What does Broadway plus a non-top 10 do for the Dodgers? They're trying to win, and trading one of their prospects who has good value for a struggling prospect and likely a young reliever who may or may not turn into anything is absolutely ridiuclous. I just think it's gonna take a hell of an offseason to make this team compete, and it's going to be harder if they don't trade Garland because that's $12 mill the Sox can't spend. The difference between a $12 mill 4.00 ERA and a $400K 4.75 ERA isn't just 3 quarters of a point.
  2. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 01:55 AM) I think there's a good chance Garland would re-sign with us right now actually. His best buddy Buehrle is here with the team for another 4 seasons, and he's always done well here, so there are some good reasons. It all depends on the $$$ though. If you did trade both though, you'd be giving 3 spots in the rotation to Danks, Floyd and a battle b/w Sisco, Masset, Broadway, Haeger and Gonzalez for that 5th starter's job. The Sox say they don't want to go into rebuilding mode, and I don't think they could win with this type of a rotation (at least not in 2008), hence why I don't think it'll happen. The Sox weren't in rebuilding mode this year, rather retooling mode; Kenny Williams thought the team he put on the field opening day could compete for a division title. We saw that turn to hell real quick. So, that being said, what makes KW think that a rotation of Buehrle-Vazquez-Danks and then 2 of Floyd/Haeger/Sisco/Masset/Gio/Broadway/MLC pitchers won't work? You're likely to find one of them who will perform well (ie, an ERA of 4.75-5.00), and another who can become a reasonable 5th starter (ie, 5.00-5.50 ERA). If trading Garland can net you Hu and Kemp - giving the Sox a legitimate shortstop and another outfielder - why would you not? And then, if you take on half of Contreras's contract, you may get another solid player out of the whole deal too. As is, the Sox would likely be looking at a rotation of Buehrle-Vazquez-Garland-Danks-battlezone and an outfield of Fields, Owens, and Sweeney. Does anybody on this board actually want that outfield?
  3. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 05:38 PM) With Ichiru and Byrnes signing to deals, its looking more and more as if the Sox are going to re-sign Rowand. Lets face it, they are not going to spend the big cash on Hunter or Andruw Jones. Its most likely going to be an OF of Dye, Rowand and Owens. Or Dye, Owens and Fields while Crede remains the 3B. I eat Cheeriu's in the morning. And this move has absolutely no effect on Aaron Rowand and the White Sox. It has a slight effect on the White Sox, and a bigger effect on Rowand, but not the two together. Please, don't think it does. It's also funny to see how some people think he is getting overpaid, when really this is a below market contract. He really probably could have gotten atleast 5 years from a team, and perhaps somewhere around $11-12 mill per. Still, all things considered this is probably a solid move by the DBacks.
  4. If push came to shove, I'd pay some of Contreras's salary and still deal Garland. I honestly can't think of one good reason why Garland should not be traded to the highest bidder this winter. He's a good pitcher, yes, but I really don't think there's any shot of him resigning, and he's as prone as any pitcher the Sox have to either be good or to get completely torn apart. Contreras's presence on the club should have no impact on whether Garland goes.

  7. Greatest sports moment of the year...easily. Perhaps the decade. That was absolutely wonderful.
  8. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 05:02 PM) I assume you're a big fan of Jerry Owens? We need three outfielders for next year. If Fields isn't one of them, Owens assuredly is. In fact, Owens is probably the CFer until Sweeney usurps him even if Fields is in the OF. A vote for Crede is a vote against punchless outfielders. I'd rather see Ben Grieve patrol CF rather than Jerry Owens. Or maybe Ernie Young. All I, as a fan, can hope for is that they realize he is not going through a period of rookie struggle rather than a period of Jerry Owens suckage. I'm not sure what kind of future Owens holds in the majors, but I really don't think it's a bright future. I'd be all over non-tendering Crede simply because it does open the door for Fields at 3B, so that he can start to adjust and develop into an average defender at 3B while maintaining his development as a hitter. And part of that has to do with the simple idea that you can find better outfield options on the minor league free agent market for LF (with Sweeney in CF, where his .275 average with a .700 OPS will prove to atleast be somewhat valuable on an Erstadian level) than you can Owens in CF. I mean, quite frankly, Owens should be the last option for any outfield position on the Sox right now.
  9. QUOTE(forrestg @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 01:14 AM) Joe might dispel any rumors of his demise in spring training.. Joe if he does well will cost us at least 4 million. If he didn't have the back problems I believe he's the best fielding 3rd baseman he may pale in comparison to some of the other 3rd baseman offensively he has the potential to hit in the 270 range with 30 + home runs and 80 + rbis with gold glove fielding ability. I think the dodger could afford him in 09 at what he's really worth. If the dodger would trade and we got Hung Lung Hu back in exchange I think that would be profitable for both teams. I know that would hinge on Joe being healthy. In another scenario we do not offer Joe arbitration and anybody can make offers for him. 1) He's not the best 3Bman in the game; even healthy, I would have rather have Inge or Punto defensively within the AL Central at 3B. They are both bad (absolutely terribly horrific in Punto's case) offensive players, but are both better defensively. On top of that, Rolen is still better defensively, and Pedro Feliz is pretty damn good himself. 2) .270 30 80 still brings you to .320/.480/.800, and that's about absolute best case scenario. Worst case, he reinjures the back and is done for the year again, and 2nd worst is that he comes back, doesn't produce, and the Sox have to DFA him and pay $4 mill and either release him, take on the contract and get a C prospect, or don't take on the contract and get a a minor league player not even worth grading on any sort of scale. 3) You aren't getting Hu for Crede. Not happening. Never was a shot.
  10. QUOTE(knightni @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 03:35 AM) Contreras is going to be very tough to move in the offseason. NO WAI!1!!11!!!11!!!
  11. QUOTE(BearSox @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 04:59 PM) hey, throw Poreda in there and we have a left foursome! according to the 2004 Kansas City Royals, that SUCKS
  12. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 04:57 PM) Best Tools are divided by Baseball America into leagues, and in the South Atlantic League -- where DLS pitches -- he ranks as follows: -2nd in strikeouts (with a large discrepancy in innings compared to those pitchers around him) -2nd in WHIP -4th in ERA -1st in BAA Whether opposing team's managers have acknowledged his talent or not, the statistics suggest DLS is fairly good. so, since you are using averages for everything else as opposed to total hits, hits and walks, and earned runs allowed, you may as well use K/9 too, no? 11.2 K/9, which is, with just a quick look through the top numbers, far and away better than anyone else in the league. just sayin
  13. QUOTE(Shadows @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 03:16 AM) William Bodie, 32 years old and 228 wins.. Has a great chance to get #300 before its all said and done shut up
  14. QUOTE(Shadows @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 03:00 AM) Ted Ginn who is signed and making a big impression in training camp or brady quinn who is holding out for top 10 money? P.S. Beck is also getting rave reviews from camp as well, also signed btw.. and there is the "Dolphins never make a wrong move" TRU I love
  15. QUOTE(Shadows @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 08:37 PM) for my boy wite or draft Ted Ginn over Brady Quinn
  16. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 12:17 AM) Ya, that really didn't come into effect though. If anything it hurt him a bit cause he got blooped to death. Which is a good sign of things to come. I still love me some neck fuzz.
  17. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 09:40 PM) That should be the standard for him from here on out. The good thing was, it came against a very good hitting team in Detroit, so it's not like he dominated the Giants or some sub-standard hitting team or anything. It was in one of the biggest parks in the league though. I believe they've brought the fences in a little bit, but it's still huge.
  18. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 07:39 PM) BMac's era is now better than Danks'. Brandon has really gotten his s*** together, starting to pitch the way that a lot of us thought he would. still worse than Vazquez
  19. QUOTE(spiderman @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 10:06 PM) Maybe this is a sign that the White Sox have decided to further increase their payroll this off-season to get this team back into contention ? Won't happen. If it increases, it will increase marginally. All this tells me is that come the offseason, one of Vazquez and Garland will go and KW is going to bust his ass to get rid of Contreras while taking on as little salary as possible. Gavin's good performance - along with potential more good performances from Gavin - will further prove that to be true.
  20. QUOTE(MurcieOne @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 04:18 PM) I just got off the phone with Brooks Boyer.... and he loves your guys idea.... he is even parlaying a Bonds signing into a new in-game-feature. You heard about the Sausage race in Milwaukee well the cell will feature... "The Slow mother f***er race" where Bonds, Thome, Konerko, and AJ all partake in various situations where speed would be beneficial... but get thrown out because they are all slow motherf***ers. good, then the outfielder can try him throw them out at home as they circle the bases after hitting a combined 120 homers between the 4 of them.
  21. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 04:03 PM) I was playing around with that. I would actually put Bonds second and hit Konerko third, just because I'd want to put as much OBP as I could at the top of the lineup. That'd be interesting as well. You could probably have damn near anybody leadoff and see them put up big numbers there too. He's not your conventional 2 hitter, but he'd be getting a ton of ABs, and if AL pitchers actually pitch to him, he'd probly hit 40 homers. It's really just crazy to think what the Sox would look like with Bonds in LF.
  22. QUOTE(BearSox @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 03:47 PM) I guess I will cause Ruth is the greatest there is and likely ever be, in my book. Then again, I'm old fashion. K, then be ignorant of the fact that Ruth didn't have to play against African-Americans, Latinos, and Asians, didn't have to worry about jetlag, and didn't have to worry about the media scrutiny everyone else in the game does today too.
  23. QUOTE(BearSox @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 03:52 PM) why do people want to spend 15+ million on Bonds? It just makes no sense. He is old and mediocre, at this stage of his career at least, and bringing him in just defeats the purpose of trying to get younger and faster. In other news, KW better freaking get Chin-Lung Hu to play SS in the offseason. No, it aids in getting younger and faster, because you can let those players develop while still remaining competitive. And mediocre was about the worst describing word you could have ever used when talking about Bonds. I mean, mediocre to the tune of a 1.049 OPS? I wish I could have that kind of mediocre on my roster.
  24. I don't even think it's a guarantee Bonds will play next year, so this entire discussion may be a moot point anyways. Anyways, Vandy, I really just look at the effect Gary Sheffield - who is under the same media and federal scrutiny Bonds is under, but has been dumb enough to actually talk about it publically - has done for Detroit. He's not a world class citizen, in fact quite the opposite, but he's a hell of a hitter and without him, I severely doubt the Tigers are anywhere near as good as they have been this year.
