But he's got sick potential, and with a little discipline at the plate - which age may very well help - he could be an outstanding player, and would be an excellent player to stick in LF just to see if he sticks.
  2. QUOTE(southsida86 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 01:51 PM) I'll take your word for it then. I've heard that Hansen has a mid 90s fastball and a wicked slider, and that he was a starting prospect. I have no clue what Masterson's stuff is like but if it is anything close to Hansen's then I guess it's ok. Like I said in my post, I don't know what Masterson's stuff is like, so I was just going off his stats. I do know what Hansen's stuff is like, so I can ignore his stats a bit more. Masterson is a starter, and Hansen - seeing as how he's started only 5 games in his minor league career - is most definitely a reliever, and he's a worse relief prospect than Delcarmen is. If the Sox get Hansen, it better be as a throw-in only.
  3. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 01:49 PM) Isnt Hansen a Boras client, and wasnt their talks that Boras had "the boras team coaches" influencing him on his mechanics, and he has been a shadow of himself since he started down that road. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 01:50 PM) I read an article that the NCAA ball has different seams than the MLB ball and it makes for a nastier slider. I've heard both of these to be true, and I've also heard that even the MiLB balls are different from the MLB balls.
  4. QUOTE(southsida86 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 01:32 PM) Throw out Masterson, insert Hansen, and I like the trade. I don't know what Masterson's stuff is like, but those stats seem to imply that he is not that good. 4.33 ERA and 56 Ks in 95.2 IP in A+ seems like a non prospect to me. This seems similar to the Gooch trade where we are giving a player away for nothing of value. Then look at Hansen's stats before you go talking about how you don't like people's numbers. He's not that good, especially since he's a reliever. Masterson keeps the ball on the ground, doesn't walk people, and strikes enough people out to be effective. He's a much better prospect than Craig Hansen right now.

    Richar

    I'll throw a comparison out there - Orlando Hudson. and I'm obviously not talking defensively here.
  6. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 07:44 PM) Wite = ? that dude flat out sucks out life
  7. QUOTE(Mr. Showtime @ Jul 29, 2007 -> 11:25 PM) Robo...cop? I can see why GM's wouldn't mess around and give him the SCOOPZ~! you really just look for any opportunity to use the term "SCOOPZ~!" don't you? lol
  8. First, I doubt Dye will resign; perhaps he will, and I'm not in the know, but it just seems bridges have been burned and he's unhappy right now. Secondly, even if he did, he's going to cost atleast $36 mill over 3 years, and perhaps it may be something like a 4 year, $50 mill deal. Either of them have terrifying potential to blow up and become terrible contracts. A good comparison health wise may be someone like Cliff Floyd. I mean, everyone absolutely hates KW for resigning Contreras right now, but looking back, that seemed like a very good move at the time. He'd never really been injured and he had just figured out what it took to become a stud for the Sox. Then he injured his sciatic nerve, and he's been terrible since that point.
  9. QUOTE(rangercal @ Jul 29, 2007 -> 10:23 PM) haha
  10. QUOTE(sayitaintso @ Jul 29, 2007 -> 03:47 PM) That's what he was susposed to do this year, but look how that worked out for us. I really doubt that was the plan when he was signed.
  11. QUOTE(MurcieOne @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 12:48 PM) What you made makes absolutely no sesne. Rosenhaus is a deuchebag who thinks he is smarter than he really is. He got TO money NOT BECAUSE HE IS A GREAT AGENT.... BUT BECAUSE TO is an ungodly talent. Jerry Jones didnt talk to Rosenhaus and give TO a contract because he bought into Rosenhaus, he signed TO because like every team before the COwboys they thought they could tame him. I don't think they thought they could tame him; I think it was just a matter of their willingness to allow his antics because of the player he is. At any rate, thank you. TO is the reason the Cowboys paid a "cancer" like TO money; Rosenhaus is merely who represents TO.
  12. QUOTE(gosox41 @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 10:58 PM) So with Floyd in the rotation, do the Sox still hope to contend in '08? Bob I really don't think they have any hope of contention with or without Floyd in the rotation
  13. I love the trade, but that doesn't look right.
  14. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 10:10 PM) If Dye was having a season like last year, you would be 100% correct. But a GM would be crazy if he gives a top prospect for 2 months of a guy who has hit .230 for 4 months. Dye's OPS is .754 this season. Lofton's is .818. The most Lofton's will ever be is .820. It's extremely likely, though not guaranteed, that it will go down due to age and regression. With more protection in the lineup, it could go up too, who knows. On the other hand, Dye since the ASB - that's 16 games (not including today's game) - has risen his OPS nearly 100 points. He's on an absolute tear and by all accounts looks tremendous at the plate. Scouts and GM's alike - and hopefully that means Ken Williams too - will realize that and be willing to pay a pretty penny for his services. You won't get a top 5 prospect, but you can probably get a top 10 and then another piece or two to go along with him, and that is probably worth it. Or, if you don't get that offer, you can keep him, take your two draft picks, and perhaps take a risk on a guy that falls. If you're lucky, a guy like Porcello falls again, and Boras or not, you then take a chance and perhaps sign a hell of a talent that is just as good as your first draft pick which is quite likely to be in the top 10. The Sox are really in a no-lose situation regarding Dye, other than the fact that they have burned bridges with him.
  15. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 04:02 PM) The trade is for 2 months. Kenny Lofton being 40 really doesn't play much into it. He's playing well this season, Dye has not been. You can call the catcher a good one, but he's been a pro for 5 years and he's with this 3rd organization and he's in A ball. He was converted to a catcher from an infielder, so he probably wasn't too much of a infield prospect. I did mention that. Kenny Lofton's not carrying a lineup on his back. Jermaine Dye has the potential to, and he looks like he may be getting back to being able to. There's a huge difference between a guy who can put up an .800 OPS and a guy who can put up a 1.000 OPS.
  16. QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 08:42 PM) Who is suggesting we pay a high price for relievers? Has anyone suggested we trade someone of value for relievers? I, for one, certainly don't want to do that. But if you're going to criticize Kenny for putting together a bullpen that couldn't get it done this year, I don't see how you can criticize him for trying to remedy his mistake. No harm in exploring what other teams want. The Astros traded Dan Wheeler for Ty Wigginton. Wigginton has just over 3 years of service time in the league, can play 1B, 2B, and 3B along with some emergency OF, and is putting up a .275/.329/.458/.786 line after a year in which he put up almost a completely identical line. He's one of the more underrated players in the league and is pretty damn valuable. The Astros aren't looking to trade their relievers for cheap, so the Sox shouldn't be scouting them at all. If he's trying to fix the bullpen this year by picking up a reliever from the Astros, he's fighting a ridiculous battle. The Sox have live arms in the minors that should be in the bullpen rather than paying anything for a proven reliever at this point. Russell and Vasquez should be up to showcase what they can do for the organization, as should Floyd and Broadway.
  17. All Steve is trying to say is paying a high price for relievers is dumb because of how inconsistent relievers are from a year to year basis. Billy Koch was a good closer for the Jays and A's before he got traded for Keith Foulke; Koch then sucked and his career ended. Dustin Hermanson was signed for a $5 mill contract and, while he was oustanding when he pitched, only did pitch about 4 months of the 2 years he was with the Sox. Meanwhile, Damaso Marte was picked up for Matt Guerrier, Bobby Jenks was free, and Cliff Politte was signed to a minor league contract. If you pay a ton for relievers, it's bound to blow up in your face. The Orioles guaranteed about $50-60 million to their bullpen this past offseason, and it's putting up a 4.62 ERA. Why would you trade a legitimate prospect for a reliever, especially given how much work the Sox have ahead of them in turning this franchise around?
  18. QUOTE(3E8 @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 11:30 PM) This child birth brought you by 7-11 convenience stores, play ball winnar
  19. 1. DLS 2. Egbert 3. Gio 4. Sweeney 5. Carter DLS, if he can remain healthy, will be a major leaguer someday. Egbert should find the rotation at some point and take his place for a while. Gio could be very good, but I just can't help but not like his flameout possibility. The other two are easy to figure out why.
  20. QUOTE(greg775 @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 11:06 PM) It upsets me so much because he was an everyday player on our world championship team, has a name still and we get ZERO for him. If we could get no more than what we got, keep him the rest of the year and his value will be low for his next contract anyway if he's as bad as you say. I hope he and Rowand kick ass and lead Philly to the title. Had we kept him, we would have gotten zero for him. As is, we get a doobie. You can't complain about that.
  21. QUOTE(briguy27 @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 10:04 PM) Make that 754
  22. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 10:27 PM) He's simply not ready for the majors. But his first name is Amos, so that's automatically two strikes against him. disagree 100%. You can combine names and say Famous Amos Day, or perhaps just have a flat out Famous Amos Day where they give out cookies. I should so take Brooks' job.
  23. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 04:11 PM) What did you expect to get for this guy? Final year of his contract and he is hitting .250 with 6 hone runs and 30 RBI. What the f*** did you people expect to get back? Come on!!!!! It is addition by subtraction if you ask me. Have Richar step in so we can see what we have. I'm not about to read 200 more posts, but thank you.
