QUOTE(RME JICO @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 08:06 AM) Wow, that is messed up. Hopefully you have decent subs to fill in. I do. I'm just gonna let my pitching staff sit and hopefully I can win ERA and WHIP. I have Weeks and Peralta on my bench though offensively, so I do have guys to fill in there.

ESPN's Steve Phillips actually picked Sox for WC

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Apr 1, 2007 -> 06:53 PM) I doubt Miller will do any Cy Young-type dominating this year. Young phenoms generally don't dominate IMMEDIATELY. Think Felix Hernandez. (Of course, we've got Liriano and Jered Weaver as counters, but I just don't think Miller will come up and dominate. How old's he, 19?) Uh, dude, Felix did dominate coming out of the gate. I mean, 84.1, 2.64 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, K/9 of almost 9, K/BB of a little over 3, a HR/9 of 0.53, and a HRfopnnBA/9 (home runs from other players not named Brian Anderson) of 0.32. He struggled last year his second time through the league, like a lot of young players do, but that's really not a good example at all. And I think the Tigers are going to struggle this year because I just don't think the offense is good enough. It seemed to play a bit over its head last year, and unless they become more patient, I think they're going to struggle with consistency all year long and that's something they can't afford in a division like the Central. -
Which Tribe players would actually start for us?

QUOTE(scenario @ Apr 1, 2007 -> 06:51 PM) The point is simple. You DON'T have to hit for power to be a successful leadoff hitter. Using OPS overweights power factors into the comparisons. That's why it's not relatively pointless to use in comparing leadoff guys. What's the role of a leadoff hitter? Get on. Get over. Get into scoring position. Period. That's why OBP is valuable. That's why steals are valuable. I think it is utterly and completely LAUGHABLE that anyone who thinks they know anything about baseball would want Dellucci to lead off for us. Ridiculous. You're contradicting yourself. It is important for a leadoff hitter to be in scoring position, but to determine that, you have to look at stolen bases AND slugging percentage. Thus, OPS IS relevant and meaningful for leadoff hitters, and you've said as much without saying it directly. -

QUOTE(scenario @ Apr 1, 2007 -> 05:47 PM) And "he'd make a great leadoff hitter for us". LOL. A little early for drinking on Sundays, isn't it?? Reality... he's Jason Michaels with a little more power, who can't hit as well for average, and has a lower OBP. So does that mean that people that think Podsednik would be a great leadoff hitter are always blackout drunk? and really, it's fine with Cleveland if Dellucci is Jason Michaels with a little more power, because Dellucci hits right handed pitching, Michaels hits lefties, and they have both of them. -

QUOTE(BearSox @ Apr 1, 2007 -> 05:23 PM) Dellucci and his 2 steals or whatever a year just won't cut it for this team. The Twins have Luis Castillo, the Indians have Grady. We need a table-setter. I am a firm believer in having a table-setter, and we do need someone to get on base, and cause havoc on the bases. Dellucci is not a need on this team, and I'd rather take my chances with Pods having an 03/05-esque season rather than having Dellucci popping homers. a non-havoc scored run counts just the same as a havoc scored run. -

QUOTE(BearSox @ Apr 1, 2007 -> 05:01 PM) They are different hitters. We don't need a Dellucci smaking out 20 dingers. We need someone to get on base and steal 50 bases. Pods isn't going to do either of those. And Dellucci does get on base. .367 in 05, .369 last year, and a career .348. He would be an outstanding leadoff hitter for the Sox. -
It was a pleasure listening to him call games, one of the real bright spots about listening to the Twins games on the radio. I could listen to his voice all day. RIP Herb.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Apr 1, 2007 -> 03:55 PM) If you don't like Ozuna, you suck...and I hate you. haha I like watching him play, I just don't like him as a player. This isn't an all out dislike for him such as Podsednik, more or less that he's at great risk to be unproductive.

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2007 @ Apr 1, 2007 -> 03:45 AM) Pods > Dellucci There are some I disagree with, but not to the point of arguing; however, what the hell dude? Just look at the numbers. Not even a healthy Pods is as good as Dellucci, and it's really not even close. Anyways, kind of a cool story, my boss back in Bismarck actually played youth baseball with Hafner. He wasn't nearly the monster that he is now, but he said he was still quite a bit better than everyone else. Kind of funny to think that the best hitter in the AL (IMO of course) is from a town of about 200 people. -
love the Thornton signing, not a fan of Ozuna. A weak defensive player whose game is entirely dependent upon his average is just not a guy I'm a huge fan of.

QUOTE(Vance Law @ Apr 1, 2007 -> 02:04 PM) Who do you gals think are the hottest guys in MLB? easily Jim Thome. Any man that can take his wife to an Oprah show automatically gets labeled hot by me. -
QUOTE(G&T @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 06:05 AM) I believe it was Joe Cowley on the Score yesterday saying that Floyd believes that Coop has already turned him into a completely different pitcher. He didn't look any different. So did you see him pitch in Philadelphia, Scanton-Wilkes, and in the AFL last year? just curious of course, because I'd assume if you're making such statements, you'd say so.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 03:52 PM) Somewhere behind Chris Widger circa 2006 Dan Wright was probably worse too, though his ERA may not show it

QUOTE(soxfansince04 @ Mar 31, 2007 -> 12:32 AM) Do you see Danks with this ERA? Seriously asking, what would your guess for Danks' ERA be? I'd LOVE to see him w/that ERA but not so sure. If Garland and Vazquez can put up ERAs of 4.25, and Danks puts up a 5.00 ERA, that's basically a combined 4.50 ERA. I may be speaking for Balta right now, but that would be outstanding and would almost undoubtedly guarantee a division winning team.

Scott Miller of cbssportline also picks Sox 4th
witesoxfan replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I just want to say that anyone that says this team was pressured by the media last year is full of s***. The Sox were the 2nd best team in the AL at the All-Star break last year. How in the bluef*** was the media hounding them? They flat out choked because the pitching died, as well as the offense. Case closed. -
QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 01:16 PM) just as it has the lack of talent to lose 85-95 games. please tell me your joking? Not at all. Bob Dylan hit on a few of them - there's no guarantee the rotation can put up an ERA below 5, there's no guarantee in the bullpen at all, and the lineup is weak at the top and bottom. Add to it the lack of power on the bench, and this team could be very weak, especially if an injury or two strikes. On the flip side, the rotation has the potential to put up a sub-4.00 ERA, the pen could be the best in the league, and the offense could be top 3. Plain and simple, you can't predict a damn thing right now. This team is all over and unpredictable right now, and if you deny that, then, point blank, you're wrong.

Falcons to trade QB Schaub to Texans
witesoxfan replied to DrunkBomber's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Alright I'm getting pissed. Everyone talks about what the Texans should have done with the #1 pick last year - "maybe they should have taken Vince Young?" "D'Brickashaw Ferguson" - but what gets me is that I don't recall a single person suggesting they take anyone other than Reggie Bush or Mario Williams at this time last year, nor at any point in time leading up to the draft. Why is everyone looking at this in hindsight and saying what they should have done? No one else was saying they should do it, but now they act like they did and they knew it all along [/rant] Just irks me, screw these friggin NFL experts. -
QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 01:13 PM) concern's are one thing. Every team has concerns. Take a look at our division rivals. They all have concerns. The Indians have Cliff Lee and CC banged up. The tigers have Kenny Rodgers banged up. The Twins lost one pitcher to retirement and another to Tommy John surgery. The Indians lost probably there best relief pitcher to retirement. There closer is Joe Borowski for christ sake. Sabathia is fine, Rogers is older than Contreras (and Contreras is f'ing old), and the Twins have a top 10 pitching prospect in all of baseball waiting at AAA where he's likely just getting stretched out. And on top of that, the Tigers rotation is deep as hell, the Twins always have great pitching in the minors, and the Indians might have the best offense in the major leagues. There's reason for concern for the White Sox, and there's reason for hope, but you are simply not looking at this objectively. I can find just as many or more faults in the White Sox then those you've listed for the other 3 teams in the AL Central. Except that Spring Training IS partly about strikeouts - they are an indication of stuff. They are about walks, GO/AO, velocity & stuff, and mechanical issues. ERA is generally meaningless, but when your team ERA for the Spring is like 6, that's usually not a good indicator, especially when the pitchers bringing that ERA down to anything close to respectability are being sent to AAA. And I don't see how that applies to this season at all. I also really don't think people are saying this team is the next Expos, but rather they are acknowleding the fact that there are 3 other very good teams in the AL Central. I'm happy baseball's starting, but I don't like how the Sox are playing. What's wrong with that?
-
it's too hard for me to vote, and I think it should be for everybody else. As s***ty as this team is playing, and as bad as the 1-2 is, this team still has the talent to win 90-100 games, just as it has the lack of talent to lose 85-95 games.

QUOTE(CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 12:51 PM) Was your quote intentionly wrong ? Its the pot calling the kettle black. Because both the pot and kettle are black and you're saying one dumbie is calling the other one dumb. Black/black = dumb/dumb . Understand the saying a little better now ? Yeah. QUOTE(Allsox @ Mar 29, 2007 -> 08:48 AM) Mea culpa, didn't know he already did that last yr. All I can say then is the lights don't come on for Logan when it's MLB games as opposed to ST/AAA and the Sox know it and see it. They obviously went for the experience factor with Sisco. Granted, that experience has translated into being a bad lefty pitcher but my guess is Ozzie will only use him for 1 on 1 matchups than the whole inning. They can tell he can't handle the majors after 17 innings pitched? Even with pretty good stuff? I don't believe that, and I never will. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 09:15 AM) I said this earlier in the thread. Kenny got what Kenny wanted in the 25 man roster. I can't think of a spot where Ozzie won out. I hate to say this because I don't like the choices that were made, but I guess I have to give Kenny the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. And I think you are right. In CF and the 5th starter, he can't lose. He got Anderson on the roster over Terrero, and Sisco over Logan. It's a bit ridiculous to be honest.

Whalen: On Podsednik, Jenks' Velocity, Closer situation
witesoxfan replied to Gregory Pratt's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Thornton should not lead the closer by committee; no way do you put your best lefty - but not best reliever - into that situation and then leave Sisco out to dry. However, I wouldn't expect MacDougal to close over Thornton, because that would make too much sense, seeing as how he's better and right-handed. -
shoes is only good for like the first minute and a half. Muffins is dumb the first time you watch it, but it gets funnier the more you watch it (that is, if you like ridiculously stupid comedy, and I love it, so I find them funny). Who is that guy, and does he have any other movies or what? Anybody know (or care)?

QUOTE(ScottyDo @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 12:49 AM) well previous to ozzie's tenure, the sox were out of the running by june every year save one. and in every year, including the one, they turned it on in the second half rather than be flat because that's the style of manager he was. I'm not sure if it's better to get out to a huge lead and hope you can put on cruise control, or hope you can stay within it and then get hot in the second half. I think it'd probably be better if you took like a combination of the two, where you get out to a huge lead and then you build upon that in the second half, but that's idealistic. Or at the very least, get a lead and don't give it up. The team needs to play consistent ball, and if they do, they'll be a good team. A good team with a horrendous 1-2, but a good team nonetheless.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 02:03 AM) Jared Weaver has also been having some Bicep problems and will start the year on the DL. yeah, he's on my fantasy team along with like 5 other guys who are starting the year on the DL or are quite banged up at the very least. I mean, Figgins, Furcal, Gagne (that was one of the computer's picks I hated), Weaver, RJ, Sabathia...some can be understood, but 6 guys? That's just bad luck.
