  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 08:57 PM) Balta, not trying to flame, explain to me how this year isn't "all-in" compared to last year. Just because we don't have Mark? The same bodies are here with Sale filling in for Mark. What young guys are we playing to not be all-in?? Many consider Tank an upgrade over CQ. DeAza over Pierre is an upgrade as well. It's an interesting perspective, however, how does our bullpen look comparatively speaking from last year to this year? I think there's a lot of question marks there. In theory, however, this team could surprise some people. Nearly EVERYTHING would have to go right, but there is always hope. This is why we'll all be watching in April....
  2. QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 11, 2012 -> 12:53 AM) Nice post. I would think Soxtalk will be ablaze this season regarding your No. 6. People will be wanting to shut him down for sure when he hits a certain inning total. I mean if the Sox are turning him into a starter, when does his season end? What if for some reason the Sox are in the race?? Do the Sox still have to eventually shut down a guy completely who may be one of their top 3 starters before all is said and done this season?? I noticed point # 6 as well. If we plan on shutting down Sale in September, we're better advised to just limit his innings or skip a start here and there in the early part of the season in the 5% chance we're actually playing for anything meaningful in September.
  3. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jan 30, 2012 -> 11:14 AM) Last player manager we had was Don Kessinger I think. That was a different time, but didn't work out well. However, Paulie is aspecial player and man. Maybe one day he wil manage, but I am guessing two more years of playing time and maybe another two as a DH, if he would do that. Hopefully all those yeasr in a Sox uniform I thought the last player/manager was Pete Rose in the mid 80's for the Reds?
  4. QUOTE (Andrew @ Jan 12, 2012 -> 01:09 AM) I really hate Alex Rios. I know this has nothing to do with anything.... I'm sorry. Carry on.
  5. Brian Bruney has a straighter fastball with less life on it than the 2003 version of Billy Koch, which is saying something.
  6. I could see Thornton and Gavin going to the Jays for Drabek/McGuire...that seems realistic does it not?
  7. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 5, 2012 -> 08:16 AM) Wasn't that really just one guy on this site who "heard" something? That's was a concern for me as well. I am surprised that SOMEONE didn't write something about it in the media or it was at least mentioned several times by various sources privately.
  8. QUOTE (Rooftop Shots @ Dec 24, 2011 -> 10:29 PM) Quote: "Really, I don't blame anybody for anything that went wrong," Beckham said. "I blame myself for getting away from who I was, someone who was confident and who knew he was capable of doing great things. I'm back there now, and I'm excited to get back in there and compete." Just curious, do you think that this could be anything that had to do with when KW was raggin' and Walker............ about Beckham returning to his old self and old swing that he had when he first came up and had success?? And Beckham saying this because he knew what worked for him, changed some things by listening to Walk, and regrets it, so now he blames himself??? Just a thought This is a good insight. I long for those days of seeing the Beckham we saw in 2009. That was an perennial all-star second baseman in the making... Whatever he does, let's just hope he gets back to trusting his instincts which he brought into the league...although I'm not holding my breath.
  9. http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/artic...ws&c_id=cws In other news, Dunn has lost 20lbs and is in the best shape of his life, Rios has been hitting off a tee 12 hrs a day, the check is in the mail, etc
  10. I'm surprised that this is the first we heard of this. I understand that this type of thing could just make a father go mental, but is baseball that mental of a game that it would make a career 40 HR guy turn into a .150 and 11 HR type of guy? I suppose the game is that mental. Even with these worries on your mind everyday, I don't think you'd see this type of severe drop off, but I guess everyone is different. I'll be rooting for him next year and let's hope his son continues to get better.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 9, 2011 -> 01:53 PM) Actually yes, we do have a limited amount of that...for financial reasons. This is Gordon Beckham's last $500k league minimum salary season. Next year he is eligible for arbitration. If he hits like he did this year, then he will suddenly be earning a lot more money to be a defensive replacement at 2b. That is a major problem...that is why you run out of patience. You might be able to get by on his defense if that continues to be solid, for 1 season, but there's no way he'd get offered arbitration on his 2nd year, where his salary would push upwards of $5 million. It's not about some arbitrary "patience". That's the MLB schedule. He has 1-2 more seasons before he would become a DFA candidate at his current production level. If he has another 2011 in 2012, he is virtually DFA'd in my book. This really is his make or break year to show his confidence is there. What worries me the most by reading the article on WS.com was the fact that he said some days he was in the batters box and felt like he didn't even have a chance. That's awful, and he shouldn't be on the field if his confidence isnt there...
  12. With his defense and salary I am sure there would be some teams interested but I highly doubt we'd get anything of value for him. I'm still hoping a new hitting coach/approach etc can get him back to the short and quick swing we saw in 2009.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 6, 2011 -> 11:24 AM) Physical conditions can change over 6 years... So you're telling me his back got better?!?!?!
  14. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 5, 2011 -> 06:22 PM) Actually, an NL team is ideal for a guy that will primarily be a pinch-hitter. And Thome will get plenty of run with Howard out to start '12. lol! I find it hard to believe he'll be able to play 1B, but it goes to show you cannot trust everything you hear in the media. When he was hitting the tar out of the ball in 2006, we were told he couldn't play interleague too often because of his back and not being able to play the field. Now he's going to be playing 1B for the Phils next year part time?? Interesting...
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 10:54 AM) fwiw, only Parent irks me. I'm glad McEwing is getting a promotion, and I like Manto. but Parent's hiring is terrible. Please expand upon this. Is it just the lack of ML experience and you wanting a bench coach with a lot of experience to help Robin think through things since it's his first go at it?
  16. I had a feeling this was going to be picked up and said so earlier somewhere and took some heat for it- but I wasn't the only one who believed it would happen. Anyway, I realize he sucked in a White Sox uniform but you figure he will have some value with that contract as trade bait now or at the deadline. Keep in mind there still is a chance we go ALL IN this year as well and have another 125M payroll. I still believe this is possible- and yes, I think the White Sox make a ton of money even with 125M on the books for player personnel despite popular belief that management would like you to think.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 02:38 PM) ChuckGarfien Chuck Garfien New Sox hitting coach Jeff Manto on Adam Dunn: "I don't think he lost anything. It's just 1 of those years that happened." LOL. I think this is honestly the first time I've ever heard "just one of those years" in 20+ years of following baseball. I can see "just one of those months" or "just one of those weeks"....but YEARS?!?!??!! Hilarious.
  18. I remember being at Game 1 and pinching myself as the national anthem was sung. I could not believe I actually was seeing it LIVE, history, in person. I was a nervous wreck. I'll never forget Biggio grounding out to 3rd base for the first out of the game, and all of the high fives that ensued after the FIRST OUT OF THE GAME. Talk about intense!! Every out was huge. The plays Crede made all game were incredible. Simply an amazing experience. That, and walking out of the place after the W in game 1 and the ENTIRE crowd, in unison, chanting "let's go white sox"...."lets go white sox"....as we were walking down the ramp on our way out of the stadium. I knew then somehow it was our year and we were going to be world series champs. Great memories.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 09:15 AM) I can't imagine the Sox keepign Frasor. The only free agent that has a chance at being back is Mark. I don't think I would protect Danks. Crazy? I realize Frasor sucked but his historical pedigree says that $3.75 M for him is worth it, especially now we'll be an arm short in the pen with Sale going to the rotation next year. I'd be shocked if they didn't pick that up, actually...
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 21, 2011 -> 06:48 PM) Heyward was horrid in 2011. If he's horrid in 2012 most here will say Walker ruined him. If he snaps back, most will say Walker had nothing to do with it. As much as I dislike Walk, this is 100% true!!
  21. QUOTE (kwill @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 01:38 PM) I think the thread makes a ton of sense. This will put more pressure on ownership to deliver a more competitive product on the field. 1. Theo coming in with one of the largest contracts ever for a general manager. Rickett is very intrigued by sabermetrics and would imagine Theo has all the ability to make any moves he wants with the club. I bet the rumors of a trimmed down payroll are false. The cubs are in a mess right now, but a general manager with money who knows where to spend( draft picks and internationally) can turn around a franchise in a hurry. I would expect the Cubs to be very good in three years or less. 2. Consequently, the White Sox better get there act together. I know they only compete with the Cubs on the field six games a year. But, financially they compete with the Cubs everyday. They compete with them for memorabilia sales, eyes balls watching the television, ears listening to the radio, and most importantly asses in the seats. To say how well the Cubs do does not effect the White Sox is very narrow minded. 3. So what can they do. They can start investing in high draft picks, and start building more in Latin America. For once, I would like a Top Prospect to become a superstar. The only guy that maybe can do that is Dayan Viciedo. Good post. A lot of people may not realize it but there are many baseball fans in Chicago that will lean in the direction of the team that is playing better. KW better step up his game.
  22. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 10:05 AM) I supported the Robin decision, but come on coach...act like you want the job! He answered Chuck Garfein's question about what did KW see in him to make him the manager with the following quote "I don't know Chuck". It reminds me of a scene in the movie "U-571" "The skipper ALWAYS knows whether he does or not". Robin could learn something from this.
  23. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Oct 10, 2011 -> 11:17 AM) After 8 years of posting on these boards, the only thing that is certain is that nobody knows a players trade value. I don't think anything more accurate has ever been posted. Ever. Speaking of this, I think the most critical role for a GM is to make get fair value back when you are FORCED to trade some of your guys as it appears we are with Danks and Quentin. We've seen KW fail miserably at this with the Swisher trade (it was obvious we needed to let him go, but we didn't get anything back of value, which is a joke) and with Javy it appears we got the better of that deal in hindsight if Kittlebridge can keep hitting HR's and be a super utility guy for us and Flowers can continue to develop. Of course it's taken a while for that trade to get into place for us, but better late than never.
  24. I just wanted to go on record saying I like this move. I realize and appreciate the anger, and I appreciate the skepticism on this board regarding the hiring of Robin, but I think it's going to work out well.
  25. QUOTE (SI1020 @ Oct 10, 2011 -> 07:47 AM) So he was a little high strung, but I think he defended himself well against the snake in the grass Cowley. I disagree, he didn't answer anything directly, and seemed extremely defensive and did the old "lie, deny and re-accuse" strategy which most of us guys know quite well (especially when our wives or girlfriends accuse us of wrongdoing that we were probably guilty of). How he answered the lie detector test question was hilarious as well (no one would expect him to actually do it, but how he RESPONDED is very telling). Quite frankly, I wouldn't blame Cooper if he did indeed go around the back of Ozzie and asked for an extension, knowing that Ozzie's antics and overall poor performance was going to translate no Ozzie in 2012. Cooper has been in the organization for 26 years and has more loyalty to JR than Ozzie, that is 100%, so is it so crazy to think he would pass along information about what was going on in the clubhouse to KW or JR when he felt it was negatively affecting the organization? If you were the owner of a company wouldn't you want one of your employees to do the same knowing they could not talk to their boss about a problem that was eating away at your business? Some would argue it would be reckless to NOT point out there are serious problems, so I have no problem with it, quite honestly because it was clear what a joke the clubhouse had become and this team had given up on Ozzie (as many of us said the team was playing like most of the year). Now we know that to be true. This team gave up under Ozzie. PATHETIC. Bottom line- I believe Cowley's story, and at the same time I have no problem with Cooper doing what he did, even though he cannot come out publicly and say it, obviously.
