What team would you identify Herrera with if we acquired him, KC or Washington? 1/2 a season versus an entire career? Jermaine Dye played 4.5 years with KC and 3.5 years with the Oakland A’s. He was more identified with a perennially contending Oakland A’s team as a veteran leader than the Braves or Royals at that point in his career.

Greg and I were referring to him as a closer, which he didn’t end up doing as a member of the White Sox more than once or twice. It’s okay, if they sign Herrera, you will still be hearing how Greg will refuse to buy MLB Extra Innings or concession items and souvenirs at the ballpark this year. Without Harper or Machado, the only reason to watch this season is Jimenez and Moncada. If they were smart, they would realize how much value there is adding a name player that would take the pressure off all those young guys.
-
Basically, doing the same thing the next two offseasons as this one...eventually, they’re going to have to put their careers on the line and sign guys who are “part of the core” for 2021/22 and beyond. Right now, there are only Moncada (2023), Anderson (2024) and Jimenez...you can include López and Kopech if you want, but that’s still a ton of uncertainty. If you went into Year 3 of the Cubs or Astros rebuilds, you could’ve envisioned roughly 40-50% of their playoff rosters at that point.
-
The problem is that the market for 4 of those 5 guys is down or way down. Generally, sell low and buy high isn’t going to lead to great amount of success in any endeavor. And teams like the Giants would have more need for Almora because of that huge outfield.

I seem to remember Sox months ago hearing that our system was overflowing with middle and late relief prospects. If they manage to increase the payroll by $50-60 million on placeholders and don’t add Machado...this might end up being the worst offseason of all time for Sox fans...worse than Jeff Keppinger as the headliner, even.

Dan Clark on his youth baseball team in Adelaide? By the end of this saga, he’ll have more followers than Kourtney Kardashian.

Mike Trout, 2020? Better strike next year, though.

Why not just bequest the White Sox to Sale in the JR Revocable Trust plan if you’re giving him the 12 year?...that way, he can spend the rest of his years cutting up different jerseys. Drake LaRoche can be permanent batboy. Old-timer’s games can be filled with former Sox prospects who failed to put up a lifetime 650 ops. By the end, they can lop off the entire upper deck. -
I think we need to reach out to Dan Clark for an exclusive SoxTalk interview...that would be more entertaining than the last 2-3 days of blah blah blah, at least. And long live the Filibuster!

Then why not just go back to Washington, if that's actually the case?

He’s very reminiscent of Stephen Miller...you just want to punch him in the face as soon as he starts talking.

Machado: Update - Manny, do you officially like us?

When it comes to current sports news, Dave Vassegh is the man you want to talk to. He has worked in and around Los Angeles for years doing exactly what he does now which is provide people with the latest sports news. He is somewhat of a sports gossip, if you will, but would likely rather be called a sports news guru of some sort. In any case, Dave Vassegh is the guy that people come to when they need information. His sources and investigative reporting skills are incredible and he has a great reputation for providing accurate information. In fact, he often has the information far before anyone else. Therefore, he is not only a great asset to AM 570 Radio, but to everyone else in the world that uses his services. The best thing about Dave Vassegh is that even though he is a provider of current sports news, he is also a sports broadcaster that is willing to give an opinion as well. The thing is that with Dave Vassegh, you can tell that the truth and his opinions don’t mix as much as they might with other sports broadcasters. So, essentially, he gives the information and allows you to process it and make your own choices about it. Then he lays out his thoughts so that they don’t really influence the listeners completely. Having the talent to do this is rare, but Dave Vassegh has that talent and uses it daily. -
Levine: Sox won't offer more than 7 years for either player

All the teams connected to Harper and Machado really have nothing to lose (in terms of the perception of their fan base) but the...Phillies and White Sox. Cubs, Dodgers, Yankees, Braves, Cardinals, Padres, etc., fans will be pretty much be okay no matter what. Either they don't want their franchise to have so much payroll tied into one player or their franchise doesn't typically sign deals like that see (see Cardinals.) Of course, the Padres learned their lesson signing guys like Shields and Hosmer years before the rebuild was actually ready to produce. -

https://sports.yahoo.com/manny-machado-lingers-troy-tulowitzki-wont-know-awaits-bronx-205826913.html Until Machado makes his choice (the Yankees were believed to be in the running, along with the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox) or until the Yankees withdraw from the bidding on Machado, Tulowitzki, in a position to choose his perfect scenario, couldn’t know what awaits in the Bronx. He has told those close to him he would be agreeable to coming off shortstop for the right situation, and has also said he is not willing to become a utility player. If he is to assume a comeback, he’ll need at-bats, regular at-bats and a regular position. He may need his own backup, for that matter. -

They're going to get a lot of requests for season ticket refunds (especially those who bought in the last 4-6 weeks) if that's the case (the 7 year limit, unless they're willing to go to over $40 million per year, which JR won't do)...would love to know what the net loss or gain from 2018 numbers is, you'd still have to think it is down another 10-15%, barring the results of the Harper and Machado negotiations leading to an eventual rise (especially if it's Harper). -

The best (and short-term worst is) Harper signs with the Cubs for a number that destroys their franchise (eventually), taking away all financial flexibility and also raising the amount of money they have to charge subscribers for their new regional sports network to the point where nobody can afford it. Even that wouldn't REALLY be felt for another 2-3 years, barring a major injury. Epstein SHOULD have learned his lesson from the Red Sox years, but he's still making big mistakes on the FA market in Chicago. -
The thing I find most interesting with the above article is you could almost make a case that a Harper signing is just as much in Comcast's interests as the White Sox...if not moreso. Not only that, but it could have another unintended effect, which is also bumping up the value of the Cubs' deal, essentially making their subscription rates so prohibitive that most of Chicago is blocked from viewing the games (see LA Dodgers). If you were even talking an extra $35 million per year for Harper, that would more than pay for itself and still provide an extra $10-20 million per season (not even accounting for increased revenue kickbacks due to more expensive advertising rates)...and THAT'S with a historically-low payroll.

The White Sox cable deal with NBC Sports Chicago expires after the 2019 season. That agreement averaged about $55 million in rights fees for the team. The rights fee could double in the next deal. The money could even be greater if the 55 games or so that are broadcast on WGN, whose deal with the White Sox also expires after 2019, are consumed by NBC Sports. The ratings for the White Sox on NBC Sports have been very low. Bryce Harper could alleviate much of that problem. Moreover, the RSN makes money on advertising and pays dividends to its owners (the Chicago Cubs and Blackhawks also own stakes in the RSN). Higher ratings would bring in more advertising revenue and pay for some of higher rights fee to the White Sox. The upcoming sale by Walt Disney of the 22 RSNs it acquired from Fox is likely to heat up the competition for streaming revenue in baseball with potential new players like Amazon. Comcast posted net income of $23 billion last year. Harper’s deal is a check that makes sense for Comcast and one it could easily afford. Maybe it has changed to just content, I remember Dave Schoenfield used to contribute there all the time.
