QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 8, 2017 -> 06:31 PM) Korean Lives Matter! Instead of flippant, potentially racially insensitive (at best) statements, imagine you had three direct family members living in Seoul or Incheon and no way to get them out. Would you still feel the same exact way in this scenario? I think not.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 8, 2017 -> 06:28 PM) That's the game he's playing which is why that's the exact amount of respect it's getting from now on from me - a game. He tells you how terrible things are right now and how bad appeasement is, but he will refuse to lay out the details or consequences of anything else. You will ask him how many people he's willing to kill and he will deflect the question. He gets to play the big man, pointing out all the flaws in everyone else's argument, but if all he does is sit back and say how bad everything is right now other than bombing, he doesn't have to defend all the people that would be vaporized that way. It's our fault for not figuring out how to put his bold vision of everything working well into practice. Rerun the presidential election today...see whose side the American people take when faced with the proverbial 3 a.m. in the morning phone call who is best equipped to handle a REAL world crisis question.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 8, 2017 -> 06:24 PM) The track record of appeasement is spotless thankfully. * Because the North Korean threat is of the same order in terms of magnitude as Nazi Germany from 1933-1939? Really.....?????
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 8, 2017 -> 06:20 PM) Bombing North Korea will not end well for North Koreans. You can't seem to acknowledge any of the negative effects of the thing you're advocating. Not to mention the court of world opinion. We had everyone's sympathy after 9/11. Now where would we be if we launched a pre-emptive attack on a sovereign country based on a report from one intelligence agency and a rah rah Nikki Haley speech at the UN?

And we're all assuming China will just sit idly by while all this is taking place on their border? The news story that the Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping underscored China's "blood alliance" with North Korea in his meeting with President Moon Jae-in is still generating a flurry of speculation in the public sphere. Whether Xi really used the particular word at the G-20 summit is one thing, but what is more important is whether Pyongyang and Beijing can be still defined as allies in this 21st century? And from an analytical perspective, the answer is yes. According to Cheong Wa Dae, Xi said, “China has maintained a blood alliance with North Korea. There have been many changes, yet the relationship has not changed fundamentally.” In general, the Chinese government today does not refer to the Sino-North Korea relationship as “xue meng.” What the Chinese commonly use, instead, is “xian xue ning cheng.” It means a relationship “formed through fresh blood.” The common Korean translation for it is “dong maeng,” which literally means “blood alliance.” So, even if Xi didn’t use the word “blood alliance,” it would mean “blood alliance,” when translated into Korean. Semantics aside, the important question is whether the nature of today’s relationship between China and North Korea, in this 21st century, can still be defined as an “alliance” or not. The resounding answer is yes. http://m.koreatimes.co.kr/phone/news/view...._newsidx=234395

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 8, 2017 -> 06:03 PM) I already acknowledged the threat to South Korea. But that doesn't mean we can sit idly while a madman gets the nuclear capabilities to attack the mainland US. Tough problems oftentimes require tough solutions. Being passive for years and years and years is exactly what's gotten us into this mess in the first place. Again, I don't have the answer (cue Balta's lame 50 push-up comment), but there is a solution out there that is better than inaction and that doesn't necessarily mean invading and/or nuking North Korea. But I can promise you this, sanctions are simply putting a bandaid on a gunshot wound. More drastic measures must be taken if we actually want to eliminate a serious threat to the US. This sounds like something King George II's government might have argued about the disloyal American colonists in the early 1770's. Moral high ground depends entirely on one's perspective. Maybe Trump should take Jon Snow's advice to Danaerys Targaryen and do the exact opposite of whatever his instincts are telling him?
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 8, 2017 -> 05:53 PM) I'd also still like to know what complaints about Kim being dangerously detached from reality and with an enormous and fragile ego (which are true) don't also apply to Trump, a man with unilateral and unquestionable control of thousands of nuclear weapons and the largest military on Earth. That's not the duo anyone should want to be playing nuclear brinkmanship with. That can escalate very, very quickly with nobody competent or capable around to deescalate. The only hope is Mattis, McMaster, Kelly, Dunford, etc., pull him back from the precipice. If JFK went with NSC advice instead of his brother during the Cuban Missile Crisis, World War Three would likely have broken out...as well as having to guess correctly which Khrushchev cable was actually from him, was there a coup underway in Russia, etc. Trump is the opposite of cool headed, as his rhetoric today once again demonstrates. He's itching to provoke a first response from North Korea to give him the moral high ground to do something with all those high tech toys the US military has spent hundreds of billions of dollars on over time.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 8, 2017 -> 05:43 PM) That's the concern troll. If you don't support bombing X country that brutalizes it's population, then you support them or Don't care about deaths there. Same bulls*** leveled at people who opposed intervention in Libya or Syria, opposed invading Iraq, opposed long term occupation of Afghanistan, etc. One of the strongest arguments that the US "doesn't care about non-white genocide" was the pullout from Somalia after the Black Hawk Down incident and the related nearly worldwide refusal to do anything about Rwanda...versus American policy with the former Yugoslavia, a "European/White" country. And yes, millions of South Koreans in the Incheon/Seoul area would immediately be under threat of annihilation from nuclear or conventional, chemical/biological weapons. Seoul is one of the biggest cities in the world, and right across the DMZ. Of course, now we're talking one of our key allies, the history dating back generations and the fact that the US is (supposedly) in "clear and present danger" from Kim Jong Eun and Trump's own decision-making. He's desperate for a military engagement to get the focus off the Russian investigation.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 8, 2017 -> 05:40 PM) Ss2k5 what other countries do you recommend the US invade to depart corrupt regimes? How has that worked out historically? Syria is a humanitarian mess that's turned into a global problem. Libya is a disaster. Iran isn't exactly peachy. Pakistan had major regional issues and they have nuclear weapons too. Plenty of brutal dictators in the former Soviet republics. Turkey is quickly descending into authoritarianism. Venezuela too. The Philippines have widespread extra judicial killings and a leader who compared himself favorable to Hitler. There's reports of genocide in the Central African Republic. Yemen has an awful civil war. Somalia is still a mess. Which of these countries among many others do you also recommended the US take military action against? If not, why don't you care about these non white deaths? Maybe it's more instructive to go through this entire list and note the unqualified success stories. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Stat...n_regime_change Or attempted foreign assassinations since World War Two. https://wikispooks.com/wiki/US/Foreign_Assa...ions_since_1945 bin Laden in Pakistan, Chile (Pinochet), Zaire (Lumumba), Cuba (Castro), Iraq (multiple), Iran and Korea (Kim Koo, opposition leader, 1949)

The Wire... Sing Street, King Arthur and The Maze Runner are three more recent ones. -
Arrieta, you have to be joking. He's going to get $120-150 million and five years from someone...and won't provide any value to the 2020-23 teams. There's no simply rush to sign JD Martinez unless the market for corner infielders utterly collapsed and he then became a buy low guy that could be flipped. That's highly unlikely.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 8, 2017 -> 06:16 AM) The K rate with that level of power is super impressive, even if it's somewhat a product of the Pioneer Leauge. Really sucks we have such a glut of OFs in the lower minors, because he'd be a guy that I'd like to push to Winston-Salem next year. I hate the idea of a 23 year old starting off in low A. These type of guys should pushed to see if you potentially have a real prospect. Worried he'll suffer the same fate as Booker and eventually rot on the bench behind the big name guys. If they don't force themselves into the lineup somewhere over the course of 140+ games and numerous injuries to teammates, they're not good enough to be at least average big leaguers.

http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/201...-effects-215459 Trump completely screwing over rural farmers who largely voted for him Can't handle all the winning going on? The EU’s deal is all the more noteworthy because American farmers were relying on the TPP—to which the EU was not a member—to give them an advantage over European competitors. But in a further rebuke to the United States, Tokyo decided within a matter of weeks to offer the European nations virtually the same agricultural access to its market that United States trade officials had spent two excruciating years extracting through near-monthly meetings with their Japanese counterparts on the sidelines of the broader TPP negotiations; the United States is now left out. ... For his part, Trump once promised a slew of “beautiful” deals to replace the TPP, but his administration has yet to lay out a detailed strategy. U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told lawmakers that an analysis is underway to determine where it makes most sense to pursue negotiations. In the meantime, Lighthizer, a trade attorney who pressured Japan to voluntarily restrain its steel exports when he was a trade official in the 1980s, said Tokyo should just go ahead and lower their tariffs without expecting anything in return. “I think in the areas like beef and the others, they ought to be making some unilateral concessions, at least temporary concessions,” he told lawmakers in June. “And I don't quite understand why that doesn't happen.” Lighthizer said the administration still hopes to strike bilateral trade deals—that is, separate agreements with individual countries—but he conceded that "some of the TPP countries don't want to do bilaterals." The value of the TPP for many countries was that they could justify giving up protective tariffs in exchange for their own access to the markets of a wide pool of countries; many are unwilling to make such concessions for the smaller gains of a bilateral deal. Lighthizer acknowledged that even Japan, at least for the time being, may not be interested in one-on-one negotiations with the U.S.

Sir Davos with the two best lines of the episode, almost consecutively... -
Implicit/implied. Rodon and Anderson were the first two building blocks of the rebuild, so it symbolically made sense to offer the deal (only needs a 0.5-1.0 war to pay off), Anderson's agent/family wanted the guaranteed financial security. Premium position. Potential. Dynamic athletic ability. Could Hahn predict off the field events as well? Rodon/Boras would have been offered as well, but obviously rejected...so you can argue about the results Rodon has shown so far just as easily, in terms of meriting an extension. Note they didn't offer Avi Garcia, to our knowledge, or Beckham, or Viciedo. Saladino and SANCHEZ, for that matter.
-
QUOTE (rodh @ Aug 7, 2017 -> 05:07 PM) So why the projections to 1B or is that a generalization being made about him? Besides highlights I haven't seen him in a game situation so has anything changed since high school? Even in his highlights at Clemson he still looks athletic. Weight gain/training table and ACC workout facilities?

This is one report on Beer from senior year of high school... Seth Beer’s Scouting Report Hitting Beer has excellent bat speed and serious power potential, but right now he needs to focus on hitting line drives to all fields and stop trying to pull the ball every time. Looks like a future leadoff or two-hole hitter. Fielding Average fielder with a plus arm, has the makings of a future right fielder. Baserunning Talented base runner with plus speed, looks like a guy that could steal anywhere from 10-20 bases a season. Seth Beer’s Pro Comparison Brandon Nimmo – New York Mets http://www.fueledbysports.com/seth-beer-scouting-report Harrelson would love him just for being from Georgia...

Wonder how close Cashman was to letting go of Torres for Q or the eventual package that became Rutherford...? Probably not very, despite the season-ending surgery. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball...ticle-1.3372695
-
The Jimenez trade and Rutherford/Robert acquisitions (not to mention Burger and Sheets) somewhat mitigate the need for a corner bat. If you draft a college hitter, he better have the athleticism and versatility of a Bryant, rather than, say, Schwarber. Not even sure guys like Javy Baez and Happ have the ceilings we're looking at. In an ideal world, you bring in guys like Correa or Lindor that could stick at SS, but also play 2B and have the requisite power for third as well...and obviously could play OF, with the best being able to man center. Jose Ramirez right now is the model, Zobrist in his prime, what Merrifield does for the Royals, etc. Basically, a 900+ bat with the potential to play above average defense at multiple positions. Right now, in that category, we have Moncada and Anderson...and you can make a strong argument for Leury Garcia. In terms of dynamic tools, you can add Luis Robert for the outfield, and Micker Adolfo when he signed (lacking the foot speed.) The jury is still out on Rutherford defensively. Back to the subtopic, Y.Sanchez and Garcia are the most likely players to get that comp pick back from a contender...Nate Jones is too expensive and injury riddled. Or Avi Garcia, but you'd prefer blocked MLB talent back in return. Finally, whoever scouted Justin Turner and Chris Taylor for the Dodgers, they deserve a huge signing bonus to come over to the Sox.

QUOTE (beautox @ Aug 7, 2017 -> 12:38 AM) Your line up has no balence, 4 right handed hiters in a row followed by 3 lefties, i realize this is just rosterbation but still. Also Adams is behind Guerrero as it stands and Guerrero will likely be taking Lopez's spot at AAA. I still firmly believe our line up will look something like this when the sox are in contention. CF - Robert 2B - Moncada# LF - Jimenez 1B - Delmonico* or Gillespie# or Sheets* 3B - Machado(2019 FA Class 26 years old) or Burger or Arenado(2020 FA class, 29 years old) C - Collins* or Grandal#(2019 FA Class 30 years old) DH - Abreu [locked up with a 3 + 2 option year deal] SS - Anderson or Leury#[locked up to a similar kolten wong deal] or Bogaerts(2020 FA class, 27 years old) RF - Rutherford* or Adlofo or Basabe# SP Kopech SP Rodon* SP Lopez SP Guerrero* SP Giolito with Hansen, Dunning & Cease down on the farm as depth CL Burdi SU Fulmer SU Goldberg MR Bummer* That bullpen will lead to another #1-3 pick...
