  1. 'That’s not who we are’: How a besieged heartland (Idaho Falls) community rallied around its refugees https://www.yahoo.com/news/thats-not-besieg...-090015075.html Long but excellent story. What had been a local story went national in June 2016, when the headline “Idaho: Muslim Migrants RAPE 5-year-old, hold KNIFE to her throat, strip her naked, rape, and urinate on her” appeared on the website of Pamela Geller. Geller is described by the extremist-group monitor Southern Poverty Law Center as the “anti-Muslim movement’s most visible and flamboyant figurehead,” and her pushing of the story immediately spread it to right-wing and antirefugee outlets. On the conspiracy site Infowars, the headline initially read “Report: Three Syrian ‘refugees’ rape little girl at knifepoint in Idaho” with the subhead “Furious residents accuse council of coverup.” Breitbart embedded a reporter in the city, producing a series of stories on the case and painting the area as a crime-infested wasteland. The problem with the coverage was that there was no rape, no knife, no Syrians and no coverup. There was a horrific incident: On June 2, three refugees from Eritrea and Iraq, ages 7, 10 and 14, sexually assaulted a 5-year-old girl at a Twin Falls apartment complex. The boys eventually pleaded guilty to multiple charges and the records were sealed because those involved were minors. Some members of the community said the case was mishandled, but Twin Falls Police Chief Craig Kingsbury told the Times-News last month that “I’ve always felt that we followed proper protocol and procedure.” Both Kingsbury and the prosecutor, Grant Loebs, spoke publicly during the process. http://www.politico.com/story/2017/05/14/r...veterans-238314 Republicans plan massive cuts to programs for the poor, including veterans' benefits
  2. 5 5.3 6.7 (KC) 4 4 4.3 Well, at least he's survived four every time out. Averaging just a bit under 5.
  3. Burdi with the dominant save. Moncada won't leave 8 on base very often.
  4. I guess we can be somewhat encoraged by Covey's strikeouts but pen has to go 4 2/3 still.
  5. Engel with another double...755 ops. Might be ahead of Liriano now, unless they recall Rayburn instead if they need yet another OF. Second bases loaded opportunity for Moncada. Forceout for RBI, 7 lob. Gopher ball by Lucas, 4-2. 84 pitches, now through six, recovered from the homer nicely. 6.55 era.
  6. QUOTE (maxjusttyped @ May 13, 2017 -> 05:41 PM) Frazier is such a smart base runner. He picks up ~10 SB's a year just from catching pitchers falling asleep. Led the Sox with 15 last year...mostly those walking leads with huge jumps when pitchers aren't paying attention.
  7. QUOTE (soxfan49 @ May 13, 2017 -> 05:43 PM) Sox should change their colors to pink, black and white. These uniforms are awesome Also, great crowd today. Holy s*** Hawk Clock giveaway and first pitch.
  8. Triple and single lead to a run against Giolito...out of the inning with a DP. Moncada hit into one last inning with runners on 1st and 2nd, no outs. Just swung 3-0 with bases loaded, two outs and lined out to the LFer. 2-1 Knights. Giolito through 4. No walks, 3 k's, 1 ER. Similar to last start before the wheels came off. First walk follows a K to start the 5th. 5 k's. Fly out. Through 5. 6.48 ERA.
  9. QUOTE (flavum @ May 13, 2017 -> 07:50 AM) Sox wake up with the 9th worst record in baseball. That's more like it. If they play the rest of the season the same as last year after 33 games, they'll go 70-92. Twins are already four games clear in first.
  10. Moncada with a K in his first AB against LHP Cody Reed. Delmonico and Hayes both falling to near 800 ops numbers after putting up big numbers early. Giolito 1-2-3 bottom of the first, one K, two swinging strikes. Groundout and pop up. Engel with another double. All the way up to 741 and now hitting .219. Groundout, single, two strikeouts. Unscathed through 2.
  11. Of course Happ hit a homer in his first game up...413 foot blast off Martinez. Schwarber down to .183 now. Just missed a tying homer in the last at-bat of the game, came up three feet short of the wall to Fowler in straightaway center. Dropped a foul ball down the line for an error.

  13. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your...m=.d03ab5045ee5 One thing to consider is there's quite a bit of variability built in when having the TJ surgery at 16-19 as opposed to age 30+.

  16. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 12, 2017 -> 09:22 PM) The Royals had two unbelievable comebacks and won seven WS games. The Pirates took the same route, faced Bumgarner and Pilates Arrieta in the wild card game and are now would envy the White Sox. What a funny game. And KC would have two in a row without Bumgarner. Ofc, they just as easily could have lost to Oakland and Houston and faded into obscurity.

  19. Jared got into Harvard. Thanks to dad's $2.5 million "donation." https://finance.yahoo.com/news/epa-may-allo...6--finance.html EPA to allow massive mine near pristine Alaskan salmon grounds Trump doesn't personally care for the taste of salmon, so they gone.
  20. The Sox used to dominate in those under the radar deals like the Butler one...not so much anymore, at least since Q. You can add Gonzo and Kahnle as good moves, Swarzak, Putnam, but very few offensive breakouts. Holland, time will tell. But Covey has been a hard miss. At any rate, Wade Davis for Soler will go down as one of the Top Five moves of the offseason if Davis can stay healthy...
  21. Belle had 207 hits in 1998. Lance Johnson had 227, but his first year after leaving the Sox with the Mets. 222 all-time record, Eddie Collins.
  22. Since when did Clark gain such stature?
