Four shot, killed at Washington mall
Looks like it's back down to three dead...not that it will make a difference in the gun control debate.

9/23 White Sox at Indians
Shades of Rowand again...doesn't happen as often playing RF, but unfortunately Tilson went down his first game and Shuck is AAAA fodder. The weird thing is Austin Jackson was supposed to be ready in mid-July.

2016 Democratic Thread
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 23, 2016 -> 07:15 PM) For Crux, its more along the lines of not wanting a primary challenger in 2018. Why Ricketts has decided to support Trump? That might be thinking that there's a chance of him to win. There's just no way someone with his brand of non-inclusive Republicanism can win the Republican nomination...and his appeal to the young, moderates/independents and non-Hispanic minorities is basically zero.

2016 AL Central catch-all thread
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 23, 2016 -> 01:57 PM) Well, Cleveland got its division title after all. The last few years they were the pick of many. You get a very good manager like the one they have and you do ultimately rise to the top. Scouting/talent is 2/3rd's of that equation. Francona does have 2 playoff appearances in 4 attempts.

At least we're not the Orioles. They're playing like the 2012 White Sox at this point, getting blanked by Shelby Miller. Never thought the Tigers could actually do it.

The ONLY thing that makes sense is guys like Cruz and Ricketts think there's a decent chance Trump wins and don't want to have their lack of support on the record...if he wins. Hedging their bets. If nothing else, they can argue it was supporting a conservative SC or fighting the onerous death/estate tax penalties.

Baseball America: League Top 20's
That is just the icing on the cake with Shields. He (Tatis, Jr.) probably won't have the career his father did, but that trade sucks so bad on multiple levels.

I was just joking about the last remark. At least I think so. Disinterest? Lack of any type of economic plan other than trickle down? He was staunchly for compassionate conservatism, and there were some tangible effects (good and bad) in the non-profit/charity sector. Also, giving away that Medicare B entitlement helped to blow yet another hole in the budget. Bush was good if you could care less about responsible government and ethical decision-making in foreign policy. Jeopardizing thousands of lives because your father was almost assassinated in that region...petty.

Bush was a patsy. It was the military industrial complex that's responsible.

The problem is simple: it's home runs and .OPS
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 09:43 PM) I think the problem with the offense is, as has been stated, striking out too much. This team does not seem to value not giving up outs. Not striking out means forcing the opposing defense to make a play to get an out. Considering that a given player's defensive value is typically increased by not screwing up, there is value to putting the ball in play. By striking out, an offense is limiting the amount of times that the opposing defense must make a play to record an out, thereby limiting the number of times they will screw up. Not striking out puts pressure on the other team and gives your offense more opportunities to score runs. This is a skill the White Sox should value more than they currently do, including teaching it throughout the system. See Twins 2001-2010, KC 2013-2016.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 06:55 PM) So should Obama be fired for the EPA screw up? Sure, if it can be proven that he had knowledge of the screw up very early in the process, obfuscated and tried to cover it up.

2016 Democratic Thread
It's telling that the majority of those losing their jobs at Wells-Fargo were in the $30-65,000 average salary range. What was the golden parachute for the 2nd in charge, that was leaving the company...not only wasn't she fired, but she's STILL getting something like $120-150 million when's she's the officer MOST DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE. As someone mentioned, this is where she has to line up behind Warren and basically pillory the CEO and take a stand that if that golden parachute stands, she's going to make it her personal business as president to make life for that company like being on J. Edgar Hoover's hit list. Hillary always has the talking points, the messaging team, the appropriate twitter lines (except for her deplorables, off the cuff speech) but you never really quite believe she actually is going to do anything about it, to really FIGHT for that legislation and put the full weight of her political power behind it when in office. I don't know if Clinton doesn't want to directly assault Manchin (the parallel Epipen controversy) because she's a Democratic senator's daughter, but that's another opportunity to fight for the middle class and poor and stake out her position very clearly. I wouldn't be surprised if even Trump found Mylan's actions beyond the pale, especially when you look closely into their executive compensation and incentives for driving up profit regardless of the "real life" health consequences, which is often life or death with the Epipen. It's one thing to profit off the iphone like Apple, but nobody's going to die if they charged $3500-4000 for an iphone 7. Not to mention they're basically protected from any price competition, so you essentially have a monopoly on the product, with Congress going out of their way to protect one of their own and make generic knock-offs impossible to reach the market.

QUOTE (harkness @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 04:21 PM) You are telling me they play in harder ball parks to hit homeruns... not sure what your point is. Those teams won because of their pithing and defense and other factors. If you are saying the Sox need to get home run hitters because they play in a home run hitting park - again I say that's what they have been trying to do and its failing. So really what you are advocating is for them to do the same thing they been failing at. What southside posted showed pretty clearly that HR's isn't the reason the Sox aren't scoring as much. And KC is the third best run scoring park...but it's still a doubles and triples stadium except in the middle of the summer or when the wind is blowing out. Once again, you need that balance of speed, occasional power and the ability to work counts as well as make contact in key situations.

Even the Orioles are going to struggle to make the playoffs, have a line-up with power up and down the lineup and they also have the benefit of the best closer in the AL. Maybe an equally valid argument would be finding a good catcher like Gary Sanchez who can hit for power is worth its worth in gold...otherwise, you're forced to perpetually chase production at DH and the corner IF and OF spots...or get your slugging from the middle infield and CF (players like Kinsler, Lindor or Cain).

Who Will Be The Next Manager of the White Sox
http://blog.triblive.com/bucco-blog/2016/0.../#axzz4Kz5NB84q They're going to need a pitching coach who can get his pitchers to be more effective up in the zone...which doesn't bode well for USCF pitching success. "In some cases, the probability of a low outside strike being called has decreased by up to 12% (in 2016)." Strike zone is roughly 40 square inches larger and has significantly moved upwards...over the last six years.

A LOTTA people disliked Truman for most of his presidency (JFK, too), he always suffered from comparisons with the much more sophisticated FDR, but he turned out to be one of our better presidents, in terms of the judgement of history. There's never been a president with close to the initial unfavorable ratings of either Clinton or Trump...and Trump ALWAYS trails Clinton in his category, with at least an additional 5-10% finding him even more deplorable.

September 20th Game Thread: ChiSox at Phillies
It's really hard to COUNT on James Shields being the same guy he was EVEN in the first half of 2016 as we look forward to the 2017 rotation...let alone the pitcher he was in 2013 or 2014 in KC, where he was already experiencing some struggles with diminished stuff, elevated pitch counts, etc. With that went some of his mental edge and the swagger of being "Big Game" James in Tampa. You simply can't throw that many innings for that many consecutive years without payback. Ask Mark Buehrle.

2016 Republican Thread
QUOTE (raBBit @ Sep 19, 2016 -> 05:10 PM) Oh no, he stole Obama's "Americanness" I am sure Obama lost sleep over it and was really hurt. Trump said the stuff about Obama being born in Kenya (which isn't racist btw, it's just factually incorrect) and has since reneged on it. Just like HRC didn't support gay marriage for over a decade and then flipped the switch in 2013. I don't see you calling her a homophobe or claiming she stole millions of Americans' "Americanness." Key point. Deliberately lying with a racist veneer to take advantage of visceral hatred of the president by a minority of Americans versus maintaining a position that was in alignment with the majority of the country at the time...and her religious beliefs. You can argue all you want that some Democrats only jumped on the LGBT train when it was too late, but that's politics for you. It's one of the main reasons Obama won in 2008, he was courageous enough to take an early stand against the Iraq War. Clinton is a politician, and she waffles when it's politically expedient...shifting with the wind and pollsters (see TPT deal or NAFTA.) That said, you can't remotely compare the two, or you're going to end up with every single Republican looking even more intolerant, unless you're going to take the Pence position here that your personal opposition still resides in moral/Biblical grounding and will never waver, no matter what.
