NCAA basketball 2015-16 thread

QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 16, 2015 -> 02:23 AM) Is Barry Hinson popular yet? How are they doing this year? 12-15 years ago maybe... -
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 16, 2015 -> 06:48 AM) He should have been up opening day 2014. The cub sucked and if Russell was ready this year Bryant was ready day 1 2014. The money saved with this move was given to Heyward in a serious overpay You mean the Lester deal last year? That probably ends up as the worst move...or the last two of Zobrist.

https://www.yahoo.com/movies/review-star-wa...-123136679.html Very positive, complimentary review, slight/mild spoilers...basically stating the Joseph Campbell good vs. evil mythicism is dialed diwn on a notch or two but everything else fans of the first threemovies fell in love with is back in its proper place.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 08:12 PM) The Yankees claimed Robertson off waivers, we couldn't have gotten any prospects from them, only options were to pull him back or let him go and have them absorb the entire contract. They can't sneak a player or two back as PTBNL's (maybe a pool of 2-3 players is set at that time, and they would be able to choose 1-2) after the season is over? Hmmm.... At any rate, the White Sox are currently 19th-21st in terms of betting odds for the World Series title in 2016. Not surprisingly, the Cubs are 1st and Giants just moved up with the Cueto deal. Red Sox are 3rd and surprisingly the Yankees are barely in the top half. Orioles and Angels really need to make some moves. https://sports.bovada.lv/baseball AL Central Tied for 4th--KC Tied for 14th--CLE Indians/Detroit Tigers Tied for 19th--White Sox/Twins/Orioles

Prince Fielder at 378 Yunel Escobar amazingly was 375 but already traded/acquired David Peralta with the D-Backs has been the target of lots of trade speculation but not sure if we match up for a trade Nick Markakis has that high OBP, but lacking in power and declining athletically/defensively...around a 2 WAR type who's owed $31.5 million for 3 more years AJ Pollock was the reason they traded away Eaton, so probably not Christian Yelich with the Marlins is an interesting name would be a very expensive target in terms of prospects Adam Lind fit this mold perfectly...but not a logical get for the White Sox in terms of our current personnel, last offseason would have been the moment (instead of LaRoche) Logan Forsythe with the Rays, but good luck acquiring him for less than the kitchen sink Dee Gordon and DJ LeMahieu have been talked about a lot around here in recent months... Carlos Santana, although the Indians are unlikely to risk trading him to a divisional rival

Viable Trade Candidates That Wont Cost Anderson or Fulmer?
caulfield12 replied to Dunt's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Fielder is like a much more expensive version of Ethier, in the sense that acquiring him for another team at least becomes arguable or debatable because of his performance recovery in 2016...but...you're still looking to give almost nothing in terms of prospects and also get back X amount of that salary in return to make it more palatable for the ownership group. Something like the Thome deal for the White Sox, where they had to open up a spot for Ryan Howard and Thome was also perceived to be damaged goods to an extent as he was rehabbing from an injury and full recovery wasn't considered a 100% certainty at that time. In general, it's probably a risk to be avoided because of the long-term commitment and uncertainty about how Fielder's health will hold up, but making one of these types of moves (more financial than prospect-based) would be more attractive to the fanbase. Still, highly unlikely, especially with LaRoche, Abreu, Cabrera and Avi already representing four DH's. Micah Johnson, if you want to think outside of the box and include a fifth. -
Wouldn't it have been a lot better to have traded Robertson's relatively higher salary to the Yankees last July, gotten a prospect or two back, and then spent a lot less on K-Rod for this year? Even if we were able to trade Robertson for Puig+, which is dubious...you'd then have Nate Jones or Petricka as your closer and that's going to end up with so-so results at best.
-
You're way overvaluing David Robertson's appeal...he's not in that same elite class as Kimbrel perception-wise and his stuff fell off in the second half of the season appreciably.

cost/benefit analysis for the Chicago white sox
caulfield12 replied to Whisox05's topic in Pale Hose Talk
1) Doesn't take into account ticket subsidies that kick in at lower attendance levels. 2) Doesn't fully consider opportunity cost of lost Samardzija pick and loss of talent for Frazier...as well as impact of being forced to trade two of Sanchez, Saladino and Micah when Lawrie is pushed to 2b. Doesn't consider possibility of those traded players being a part of core in 2016-2021. Or replacing Cabrera, Lawrie and Frazier after 2017, as well as a new catcher before that season. 3) Doesn't fully consider injury possibilities with Melky, Frazier, Avila, Lawrie, Eaton, Sale, Q, Rodon and Abreu. 4) Doesn't consider higher revenue sharing percentages that strongly benefit teams like the Marlins...the flipside possibility of being even more profitable with a teardown. 5) Should also include something about impact on 2019-2020 media rights negotiations...although a teardown now could also lead to very competitive teams in 2018 and 2019 depending on the maximized talent/trade acquisitions being made. -
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 09:40 AM) Again, this is all predicated on Melky regressing toward his career averages. Cue Balta...

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 08:14 AM) Quintana and Rodon has more value than all 3 of those players. Cozart's value isn't that high coming off a torn ACL, not that great of a hitter, but has a solid glove. Cozart's value is probably equal to or less than what we traded for Lawrie. Also, in my original proposal for Frazier and Cozart, I did include Anderson, AND Montas, Micah, and Avi. That's 2 top 100 prospects, a possible replacement for Phillips at 2B, and an OF with MLB experience that still has potential. I did also mention that Thompson could replace Avi in the deal and LaRoche and Avi could platoon at DH. The Tigers and I think one other team already moved Suarez...I'll put it this way, trading Cozart or Mesoraco at all-time low values would have been the equivalent of us trading Avi before 2015, which would in hindsight been the wiser move in terms of trade return. That said, both those guys have put up much more impressive stretches of performance at the big league level than Garcia. Cozart (healthy) has a ton of value for defense, alone.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 09:31 AM) I will give you 4 to 1 odds. I will not post for 4 years if Gordon goes back to KC. You don't post for 1 year if he goes elsewhere. That is the low end of your odds and you weren't going to post until Ventura was fired or KW left anyway. Make the deal or stop with your BS percentages. No one cares about the Royals in the Todd Frazier thread. Lol. You already lost the Gordon Beckham bet two years ago but kept on your determined warpath trying to convince everyone of Don Cooper's mediocrity.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 09:20 AM) Please do. I wasn't tearing the team apart. I basically said s*** or get off the pot. And if now Gordon just won't happen, how come 15 minutes ago it was a 25-33 percent chance? Heyward staying with the Cardinals was roughly a 50/50 proposition (they offered more money) but that didn't happen, either. I can guarantee that Gordon stays with KC if they offer the most money, compared to the Heyward case.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 09:20 AM) Please do. I wasn't tearing the team apart. I basically said s*** or get off the pot. Who exactly are you going to subtract besides Eaton, Q, Sale, Abreu and Rodon that anybody would want? David Robertson? That's more of a salary dump. We're not getting a Top 50 prospect back for him. Pocket the savings for the 2018-19 free agent class? Don't tell me you believe there's a hidden Melky Cabrera market out there.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 09:12 AM) Please pull it out. and while commenting, see if you can not mention the Royals QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 14, 2015 -> 03:14 PM) * If you can't add, as much as it pains me, then you must take advantage of said prices and subtract. They had a plan which supposedly included Samardzija. What were they going to pay him with if they have no money? It isn't like they are $20 million short of their projected revenues. If they are, they are crazy.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 08:58 AM) I will give you 4 to 1 odds on Gordon, which is the low end of your ridiculous made up percentages. Care to make it interesting? You are all over the place, just last night you were telling us the Royals are in a far greater position financially to sign a guy to a big contract than the White Sox. Now it's a different story. Should I pull out your post where you are recently tearing the team apart if the White Sox aren't willing to spend due to the high FA price tags and fear of making another colosssal payroll mistake? Alex Gordon isn't the right player at age 32 unless they can only sign him for three years...that just won't happen in this market. I still believe the White Sox are less likely to spend $75-100 million than KC because the Royals are looking at offensive downgrades at three separate positions. At the very least, they'll go after someone like Ian Desmond, although he doesn't quite line up with their defensive philosophy. Actually, I wouldn't be totally shocked if they signed Alexei Ramirez and played him at 2b and LF/RF. They only have a two year window. Something like Parra, Ramirez and Desmond to keep them competitive enough. Veteran players mostly.
-
So it's more interesting to just state they have a fairly decent chance at signing him but it's certainly not highly likely but definitely more likely with Zobrist already out of the picture? Compelling stuff.
-
QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 08:43 AM) in some respect, i am glad the sox are not running out there and signing all the top fa's. i will preach this, i trust hahn in doing this the right way. Why?
-
S-S Choo is still the only truly successful Korean outfielder in the history of the game...there's that. It's not like we can compare Koreans with Cubans or even Japanese players in terms of overall impact. Not much history there to go on.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 08:28 AM) Believe me, a couple of the guys he is thinking the Royals are signing go elsewhere, he is jumping off that bandwagon. I don't think it's coincidence he came back when he said he was gone until Ventura or KW left as soon as the Cubs got Heyward. That's his next stop. The Cubs have enough attention on this board already. Supporting them the next 4-5 seasons would be like supporting the Yankees, Red Sox, Packers, Patriots, Man U or Barcelona. Who did I predict they would sign? 25-33% chance on Gordon...that's the likeliest, but at the salary and years he's asking you can understand why a small market team with the worst media contract in baseball won't risk hamstringing themselves with an exploding albatross of a contract.
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 14, 2015 -> 01:12 PM) Because they're rebuilding? They used Suarez at SS after Cozart got hurt, put an OPS of 780. Suarez is not the long term solution. He's more likely to end up a utility infielder ala Ramon Santiago. There's no way they trade Frazier/Cozart/Mesoraco...any combination of two out of three...for less than Anderson/Fulmer but more likely Quintana or Rodon as the target.
-
QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 07:49 AM) Lol he just trolls with Royals posts out of jealousy. Nobody would be jealous of the White Sox situation right now. I really do wish some days it was possible to change your favorite team but it's pretty much a lifetime commitment, through good times and bad. And the odds of the White Sox winning another World Series in my lifetime (while not great) are still infinitely higher than my alma mater the Univ of Iowa winning a national championship in fb or basketball.
-
Okay, since the AL Central is so wide open, why aren't we being linked to any of the big names recently? And the Indians need a 3b a lot more than the White Sox since we just traded for one...we have our most depth at the position Lawrie would be moved to (2b) and the Indians unless they move Kipnis to 3b have nothing but bad and terrible options at that position. They also have something we don't....Salazar, a young starting pitcher with great stuff they're apparently wiilling to trade, or Carrasco, or Bauer. Nobody except for Greg advocated trading Rodon or Q for Frazier that I've seen. Plus, those organizations are intimately familiar with each others' talent because of the regional proximity.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 07:34 AM) Caulfield, why is everyone of your posts in a "Todd Frazier" thread about the Royals!?! Why is the collective WAR stat projection thrown into the Todd Frazier thread? It shouldn't be part of this discussion...or it should be in every thread since on the surface it's compelling evidence for why the White Sox shouldn't and can't afford to sit back on their heels the next two seasons waiting for...I'm not sure what exactly. More favorable economic conditions?

QUOTE (Dunt @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 07:30 AM) Might be dumb, but it's something to think about nonetheless: Sox are always slow out of the gate and Justin Upton seems to always put up solid numbers in April and May: April .277/.357/.529 May .279/.366/.490 June .269/.366/.409 July .273/.340/.479 August .280/.356/.500 Sept/Oct .250/.322/.434 Hasn't he always played the majority of his games in warm weather cities at that time? A big departure from Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit and Minny.
