QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 18, 2015 -> 07:59 PM) He's hard to replace unless you find someone better. The Sox never replace with someone better. They look for a former favorite player from the 80s and 90s. Alex Fernandez sounds random enough. Bobby Thigpen, maybe?

Cooper might know what he's doing but it feels a bit like Bob Stoops and OU. Needs a new challenge/spark and change of scenery. Things have gotten stale and a sense of apathy is setting in.

QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 18, 2015 -> 07:54 PM) Not because of this second half or tonight, but they really should listen on Sale offers this offseason. If the Sox can build around a 2017 rotation around a prospect in a Sale trade, Rodon, Quintana, Fulmer, and maybe Johnson or Montas, they should do that. They're probably going to be too afraid to trade him due to the blowback/White Flag spectre so Quintana gets dealt instead.

Right now, other than the Tigers, who will still spend more than us in the offseason and change managers...is there any reason to believe we have a snowball's chance in hell to finish ahead of KC, Minn or Cleve next year?

Offensive in the sense the White Sox can never check the scouting box of finding a single hitter capable of turning around a fastball other than Jose Abreu?

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Sep 17, 2015 -> 02:21 PM) Yet KW stays employed And that's a full decade if not for Hahn's kid guessing right on the coin flip...because the Twins would have clobbered the Sox in the MetroDoom in 2008.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Sep 17, 2015 -> 02:14 PM) Want to bet we won't make it that far? I'm starting to have my doubts that Sale or Abreu will ever see the playoffs in a Sox jersey. Partly because that would require a new manager...and that might not happen for another 2-3 seasons at the rate they're going.

Athletics at White Sox
LaRoche, Saladino, Sanchez and Olt in the same infield will sell about as well for Brooks Boyer as Wil Cordero, Steve Sax, Royce Clayton and Chris Snopek playing together. Akexei will be back.

Athletics at White Sox
Olt/Crede and Shuck/Quentin bringing back some memories of 2008 with jersey numbers at least... We're already 25% of the way to the Royals' stretch of no playoffs for 28 years. Yay!

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 17, 2015 -> 01:52 PM) How do you explain Hillary then? She's gonna win in a landslide and is the dullest of the dull. Great great post. But I disagreed with a lot of your other posts. This one was great. What about Carlie? Apparently she lied about the videos of PP. The thought of what she stated sickened me. I want the truth. Why is there never any outrage about stuff like this. Some poor fetus kept alive for its brain? This is one of the most sickening images of the year. Truthfully, we can be such disgusting people sometimes. Bush obviously is gonna be the Republican candidate. Carlie was a disaster with HP. Can't win because of that. Donald's political career will flame out. I still say his 20 minutes of fame (politics wise) is going to definitely run out. He'll need a way to save face and ultimately will drop out. BTW I couldn't watch the Hlllary skit on Jimmy Fallon. What a chickenbleep move by Fallon. So the republicans have this serious debate and Hillary gets the most out of the night with a dumb skit on the Tonight Show. Sad, sad world. Hillary is the choice of Hollywood and the media thus she WINS and WINS big. Sad. My only hope is Bill is a co-president. Bush is far from a sure thing right now...as much as the GOP establisment would prefer it. The two main things to come out of the last debate were "blood coming out of her whatever/wherever" and Carly Fiorina got a huge bump in a debate watched by almost nobody. Fallon's skit will have zero effect on the race, other than exemplifying how desperate her camp is to move on from e-mail servers and attempt to humanize her for about the one-hundredth time since the surprise New Hampshire primary win in the wake of Obama's Iowa caucus shocker almost eight years ago.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 17, 2015 -> 01:37 PM) Because in both cases you are asking THEM to take responsibility for someone else's choices. Either abortion or welfare, you still digging into their pockets to pay for it. Isn't that what the New Testament suggests should be the outcome...essentially...regardless of our own self-congratulatory concepts of guilt/accountability/responsibility and what brought about the choice in the first place? How can a party so proud of their religious faith be so willing to ignore the peace and social justice elements of that belief? Isn't Bernie Sanders closer to addressing that topic directly than anyone in the GOP at this moment...other than Kasich to an extent? Other than Huckabee, Santorum and recently Fiorina, but they usually go for red meat social issues pandering to the right. With how important religious conservatives are in Iowa, you would think there would be someone jumping to fill the gap....clearly Carson and Fiorina now are the closest, but still not genuinely getting into any type of uncomfortable argument. One would imagine Rubio has some room to expand here but still not engaging with a broad domestic issues platform that rarely diverges from his standard boilerplate stuff. Holding serve, essentially.

Levine: Ozzie deserves to manage again
If the White Sox can't come up with a better candidate for what continues to remain a rebuild than Ozzie, there's pretty much zero reason to have any faith in things turning around until wholesale changes are made. That said, I don't believe they're that stupid and short-sighted to use Ozzie mostly as a marketing gimmick and foil against the Cubs' surge.

The Republican Thread
Is there anything Fiorina did well as CEO of HP which would merit her consideration? Still believe that the only candidates capable of performing the job itself are Kasich, Rubio (but domestic policies...separating with the Tea Party won't happen so easily) and MAYBE Bush are the only ones from that long list. Possibly Christie as well.

Levine: Ozzie deserves to manage again
Nope, I wrote this at least 4-5 times in the off-season. Actually, for the last 2-3 years. When you work with someone day-in, day-out for a full minor league baseball season (1995), you can get a good sense if they have what it takes or not. Unlike Ventura, Jeff persevered for roughly 20 years in the minors as a coach, went through many hardships and almost died due to cancer and has the distinction of being 1 for 1 in his brief MLB career. Robin's biggest struggle was probably the first month of his major league career and coming back from a broken leg/ankle, but it still pales in comparison. You can ask Dick Allen. He wrote over and over again when the Rangers were struggling that Banny wasn't doing a good job with a huge payroll (notwithstanding all the injuries to their rotation). http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/buster-oln...r/post?id=11034 The LEAST we can do is actually have some type of managerial or organizational philosophy. Some of it sounds like Harrelson's TWTW, but it's working for the Rangers. Accountability.

Levine: Ozzie deserves to manage again
Glad the White Sox hired Jeff Banister when they had a chance. Ooops. You have an opportunity to hire the bench coach of the team that's probably the most on the cutting edge of shifting/sabremetrics/pitch framing...someone who combines the best of "old school" discipline mixed with a modern approach (see Clint Hurdle adjusting/changing his stripes as well) and they don't even consider it. Not paying Maddon, we all get that...you're not going to outbid the Cubs and he's going to realistically understand the White Sox were lacking in positional talent, but it seems we're just been designated into the 7 Circles of Dante's Hell being a Sox fan these days. I know, I know...if you're not getting any enjoyment from it, don't watch or comment, and that's pretty much been the case for many I'm sure over the last month or so.

Sox have tried to sign Samardzija to a long term deal
So much for the QO/compensation argument. Whatever we would have received would have been better for the future than NOTHING or being stuck with one of the worst pitchers in baseball on a $17+ million one year contract. Even if he pitched well, the team doesn't have the horses to compete...he's blocking someone like Montas/Fulmer/Johnson and finally, he's soaking up valuable resources that should be going towards improving the offense. Hard to ask for more of a train wreck. The team's not bad enough to be terrible and receive a high draft pick, but hasn't realistically been in the WC hunt since stumbling after that winning streak and making the decision to keep Shark. Can't believe he would be pitching like this on a playoff contender...it's almost like he's sulking or doesn't care anymore...which is probably the feeling of most Sox fans as well.

2015 Cubs Catch-All thread
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 11, 2015 -> 10:32 PM) I have a sneaky feeling Cubs will get beat pretty good in the one game wildcard at Pittsburgh. Only hope for Cubbies is to play that thing in Wrigley. I am not a big fan of the one-game Wildcard. As a Sox fan, I'm not even crazy about that. I want to win the division or not make the playoffs at all. The one-game WC is bad for baseball IMO. One game?? Give me the division title and a real playoff series or give me nothing. So you would have been opposed the 2006 team making it as the second WC? There hasn't been much drama in the NL, but the AL will go down to the wire and it has kept an extra 4-6 teams alive into September.

European Refugee Crisis
QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 11, 2015 -> 10:32 PM) All I will say is this...for as much as some of you guys like to get on your high horses and lecture the rest of us about how morally deficient we are, we had a thread where one of our own posters was faced with losing his home. Of course, not one of you so much as touched it. Not an offer of advice, not any research, nothing. Now maybe some of you reached out privately to the poster, and if that is the case, well then I take back what I said. But many of the same folks that are telling the rest of us all how we should be living happen to be absent when the rubber hits the road. I think southsider gave advice at least 10-15 times in that thread that seemed on point. Whether the moderators feel that an individual situation warrants a special fundraising drive/collection...I'm not sure that's a direction they would want to go. Someone also mentioned kickstarter, but this type of personal finance situation is a much harder sell than a Zach Braff or Veronica Mars movie. I would hope the uncle would get more involved in making sure the house is properly registered/classified so that his mother doesn't end up losing a home that has been in the family for many years.

That Hungarian reporter/camerawoman should be ashamed of herself. Tripping a father running with his young son in his arms? That would make Greg's Top Ten awful list if it happened in the U.S. outside a church.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Sep 11, 2015 -> 08:32 PM) Ed Walsh Wilbur Wood Chris Sale Mark Buehrle Eddie Cicotte This was tougher than I initially thought it would be. Still bouncing names around in my head but I'll stick with those five. Going to be fun seeing what other fans come up. You skipped over three Hall of Famers (Faber, Lyons , Wilhelm) and a near-miss in Billy Pierce. How can you put someone who knowingly threw a game to gamblers on that list? If we had one for the last 20-30 years or so, it would have to include Sale, Buehrle, Black Jack, Alex Fernandez/Alvarez. Faber, Lyons, Walsh, Wood, Cicotte, Pierce, Buehrle, Doc White, Thornton Lee and Jim Scott by career WAR with Sox.
