Taylor Thompson demoted - Maikel Cleto recalled
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 05:32 PM) There's the man to fall on the sword after the disaster today. No corresponding move yet. Typical White Sox. Rookie pitcher is the fall guy when one of the veterans (Rienzo, Belisario, Guerra) could just as easily be scapegoated off the roster. Surkamp's been around a bit, too. He's not exactly a spring chicken. NESTOR MOLINA will save the day and validate KW as the all-time smartest GM ever...

Is Ventura the worst manager in the history of MLB?
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 04:44 PM) This bullpen is the result of a ridiculously weak farm. And there's nothing to bring in. We're a long ways from 2012, when we used, what, 10 rookies from the pen alone and it seemingly worked for most of the year until September at least. That's when we had the WORST farm system in baseball. There was Leyson Septimo, Jhan Marinez (Ozzie comp), Pedro Hernandez (Quentin deal), Axelrod, Omogrosso, Heath, Hector Santiago, Nate Jones, Addison Reed...not to mention Quintana. Let's blame it on Buddy Bell, just because....well, we have to have someone to scapegoat, and Hahn and his Toronto superscout aren't as fun to pick on at the moment. Speaking of Toronto...Nestor Molina might be the next addition to the bullpen, if Zach Stewart's unavailable.

Is Ventura the worst manager in the history of MLB?
QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 04:51 PM) Well, FWIW, if Jones didn't get hurt we'd have Jones, Petricka, and Putnam as 3 quality guys to come from the farm. How does Putnam count?

2014 MLB catch-all thread
QUOTE (raBBit @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 02:57 PM) Had no idea Nix was an outfielder now? Maybe they're thinking of his brother Laynce? Nix is a great guy though, I hope he smashes some LHP in the NL Central. Nope. He's been playing all over the field the last 2-3 years. I think he might have played OF with the White Sox on at least a couple of occasions, but I can't remember clearly now. He and Lillibridge both had seasons where they showed surprising power....the thing I remember about Nix is how much he was loved by Carney Lansford, who just had glowing comments about him from his time with the Rockies.

8/3 Game-thread- Quintana vs. Gibson. 1:10 CSN
QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 05:13 PM) I think Rienzo profiles well as a reliever because he has a good heater and generally is too iffy to see a bunch of batters. I think his cutter would play up against righties too (uses it like a slider). He just hasn't really done it before and is so all over the place he probably won't be right until next year. Surkamp is a sinker baller who has historically been better against righties and never relieved before. There were a lot of reasons to think it wouldn't go well. The sinker won't play up out of the pen and he's seeing a ton of lefties. Tough to quantify the effect of learning to be a reliever as well. Except that's one of Putnam's best pitches. You want to keep the ball on the ground as reliever for the DP ball late in the game, instead of elevating it for sac flies (that's assuming you don't have the ability to get many K's and have marginal stuff for the big leagues). When it's on, Rienzo's best pitch is his curveball. He just doesn't have enough confidence in it to throw it consistently.

8/3 Game-thread- Quintana vs. Gibson. 1:10 CSN
6-8 on the season series against the Twins. Has to be better than that against the worst team in your division. LOL at someone who's so positive it's making Rongey going negative....good trick!! Even HE has to admit the bullpen has to addressed due to the poor performance this past month...Petricka, outside of a few outings, and considering his lack of experience as a closer, has done about as well as anyone could reasonably have expected coming into 2014. Same with Putnam. As far the rest of the bullpen...yikes. To me, Webb has been the biggest disappointment, but a lot of that was based on unrealistic expectations.

8/3 Game-thread- Quintana vs. Gibson. 1:10 CSN
One would hope that's the last time we ever see Rienzo in a White Sox uniform. But it probably won't be. Arcia's ball landed in the middle of the concourse and bounced over the Section 105/106 sign onto the roof of whatever's behind the concourse.

8/3 Games
Lynchburg Top of the 8th Emerson Landoni called out on strikes. Daniel Carroll singles on a line drive to right fielder Jason Coats. David Nick flies out to right fielder Jason Coats. With Levi Hyams batting, Daniel Carroll advances to 2nd on defensive indifference. Levi Hyams walks. Jose Martinez flies out to right fielder Jason Coats. Two scoreless innings today for Rodon. Not the prettiest WHIP, but we just have to hope he doesn't have a TJ/UCL injury the way today has gone.

That ball by Arcia is going to challenge Borchard's for the all-time longest in stadium history. They'll probably give it to Joe, just because he's a home player. McGwire to LF also had a ball that bounced off or right in front of the New Era cap shop, that was the longest one I can remember witnessing personally. Pasqua had a bomb to RF, too.

2014-2015 NBA thread
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 11:37 AM) Cavs need to win at least two titles to justify trading Wiggins away. They're going to so regret it otherwise. LeBron and Wiggins on the wings defensively would terrorize opposing offenses. Win just ONE in Cleveland and Wiggins would be long forgotten (unless he turns out to be a Top 50 All-Time great, quite unlikely, doesn't seem like he has the consistent willpower to take over games or impress himself upon a game rather than fading into the background when he gets off to a slow start)...they're that desperate for ANY title in any sport.

Free Agent Relievers
Just don't overbid on Miller just because...well, chasing performance in short relievers (see Kelly Downs or Jim Johnson) is just like buying last year's 130% returning mutual fund on a high, only to see it lose 30% the year you buy in.

Realistic 2015 Lineup
QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 12:24 PM) Martinez with another homerun, 3r shot , someone wants a big payday lol Hopefully he stays with the Tigers, they overpay and he does a Konerko fade...don't want any part of hitter in his late 30's after his FA drive has already ended. Plus, he was closer to Ozzie than he would be anyone with the current staff. That said, Hispanic players would seem to find Chicago a decent target destination because of all the Cubans on our team...assuming they get along well with and respect Cuban players/tradition/style of play. You'd have to think Abreu has earned a lot of respect for how he carries himself, and seemingly every fellow MLB hitter would want to come before him in a line-up.

Let's just hope it's not too long they pull Quintana from his start.

Sox were close to 3 way deal
QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 11:13 AM) MLBTR Is saying the Reds were dangling Mat Latos...I wonder if they also would trade Homer Bailey and he's the guy Hahn was talking about. He obviously fits the bill of a guy the Sox have long wanted. Who are we going to trade for him that won't cost key players from the major league roster (Alexei Ramirez to take Cozart's place?) or half our minor league prospects? Not a good match for their asking price (like Hamels with the Phillies, we can't afford to take on that type of contract and give up 3-5 top prospects).
-
Realistic 2015 Lineup
They're not going to bid on Sandoval because 1) he wants to play 3B everyday and 2) 3B is not their biggest area of need and 3) he's not going to take a shorter-term contract and 4) getting close to 30's and weight issue problems are a big unknown (see Fielder)....finally, there's the whole transitioning an NL player to the AL thing.

8/3 Games
QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 06:41 AM) http://www.milb.com/scoreboard/index.jsp?c...mp;ymd=20140803 Beck, Bassitt, and Danish starting today. Good bet Rodon gets in there today. Because he's had 4 days of rest and they're trying to get some sort of regular schedule established?

Who can find Sox record when leading after 7
On the other hand, this doesn't FEEL like a playoff team, not with this pen, the offense completely falling apart after the first 6 weeks....the lack of depth in the starting rotation, the below-average defense, etc. Really, what player other than Ramirez rates close to one of the best? Eaton's been pretty good, but he'd made a number of mental errors with his throws to home when he should have been holding runners at 2nd and 1st instead. The baserunning and fundamentals, overall, have been a bit below average but nothing like the abysmal 2013 team. One has to hope A.Garcia improves and we never have to watch DeAza or Viciedo in the OF again after this year. Finally, Tyler Flowers has 2 more months to save his starting job or likely become a career back-up.

Who can find Sox record when leading after 7
QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Aug 2, 2014 -> 11:10 PM) We would probably be right in the wild card race if it wasn't for this bullpen... We could have gotten to 4.5 back if we would of won We've basically blown 8 games. We've had roughly half that number of comebacks in the late innings. Basically, the tie game stats balance out around .500. It's fair to say we SHOULD be at least 1 but quite realistically 3 or 5 games over .500 right now. 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 games back. Now whether it's worth it for that ONE play-in game? With Chris Sale and Jose Abreu, quite possibly yes. And it would have been great for the fanbase/excitement/enthusiasm to get back to contending at least 2 seasons before the Cubs.

Who can find Sox record when leading after 7
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Aug 2, 2014 -> 09:35 PM) Anyone can find it, it just will take forever. You'd have to go to whitesox.com/schedule and examine every box score. Unless there's an easier way I don't know of. There is...I just have forgotten which website, baseball-reference, fangraphs, ESPN, mlb.com, etc.

8/2 Game Thread- Sox vs Twins 6:10 PM CT
That was just terrible, DeAza. Saw the replay. Any play like that get back to the fence FIRST, at least the warning track...then you aren't drifting with the ball so it can go over your head at the last moment, gust of wind, etc. We've had a hard enough time getting off 3 games under .500, we are FINALLY within range of that mark and just muff it.

Who can find Sox record when leading after 7
when leading after 8 (heading into the 9th), and also tied heading into the 7th, 8th and 9th?? It to be among the five worst in the majors for most of these categories, especially tie games. I don't think we'll say after this season they SHOULD have made the Wild Card, and certainly the injuries to Lindstrom and Jones were not predicted, but it feels like we had a legit shot to compete if we just had a decent bullpen.

Gutsy to throw him a 3-2 breaking ball there. Good choice by the Twins.

Farmer's trying "Mr. Dangerous" for Abreu. That's kind of lame. Pino also questioning the ump. That's not going to get him a better call from home plate.

8/2 Game Thread- Sox vs Twins 6:10 PM CT
Carroll in the White Sox rotation and any role besides mop up isn't much better. Eaton continuing to rake, that's over .300, right? This game again headed for 3 1/2 - 4 hours, Red Sox/Yankees territory. Accidental advance of the runner/productive out by Beckham. Not sure if congrats?
