QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 10, 2013 -> 07:11 PM) Where that ball land? Farmer said he THOUGHT it was over the shrubbery/bushes... 480 according to DJ. No estimated distance.
-
On the concourse? Must be the longest homer of the season, if anyone can figure out where it landed...
-
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jun 10, 2013 -> 07:05 PM) Battling Ax pitches out of it. Battle Axe? 61 pitches through 3. Not the most economical, but, as usual, he's containing the big inning.

Is there a database that has an AL average for ERA & WHIP for 4th/5th starters? I imagine that would be a bit difficult to track, since it's going to be very subjective in some cases with injuries, spot starters, fill-ins, minor league recalls...hard to isolate like it is for individual positions in the batting order or LF/CF/RF, etc.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 10, 2013 -> 06:53 PM) Viciedo lets the ball drop. Stupid fog. Surprised thaf ball wasnt 500 feet He didn't even see it...Ramirez was the only one tracking it off the bat.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/yasiel-puig-l....tsrc=samsungwn Best debut week ever? Don't know about the best throw....it's not close, I've seen much better throws by Bo Jackson, Larry Walker, Dwight Evans, Vladimir Guerrero, Jeff Francouer and Clemente, to name just a few, but it was still impressive, especially because he was a bit on his heels and didn't have all of his forward momentum behind it.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jun 10, 2013 -> 06:44 PM) I'm at the park and its crazy Where is Randall Cunningham?

Despite the demises of Konerko, Viciedo and Gillaspie, we actually scored 3 runs in an inning. Progress.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 10, 2013 -> 05:35 PM) He's got to be one of the top 5 power prospects in baseball right now And, just to reiterate the point, at age 19, with his lack of experience in high school playing baseball, in the Carolina League, it's almost unprecedented.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jun 10, 2013 -> 12:37 PM) Point of reference, Youk has a .694 OPS. $12 million for a .694 OPS. We wouldn't want to let the facts get in the way of a good rant/rave. Youkilis was too high a risk at his age, and with his recent history of injury problems. The Yankees can afford to take on risks like that, we simply cannot have too many contracts in that range blow up in our faces.
-
Nobody thought Conor Gillaspie was going to be the cornerstone of the franchise. It's simply that the team has been so miserable to watch for most of this season, he was one of the few pleasant surprises. There was always a pretty high probability he would struggle or be overexposed, especially against LHP. That was a given, and why any sane/rational baseball analyst would conclude platooning him with Keppinger was the best solution to get productivity out of 3B. If Morel was playing, we'd probably be 11-13-15 games under .500 right now. His struggles aren't to be celebrated. It just means one more hole to fill, but he was never likely to be the long-term solution in the first place. We'll just have to wait and see how he rebounds from this slump, what adjustments he makes....it could go either way.

You're Hahn, who are you looking to trade first?

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 10, 2013 -> 10:40 AM) General reactions to this thread: 1) Our team is really bad. Do not fear breaking down a bad team. The alternative is remaining bad and getting older. 2) No one wants Paul Konerko right now. Least of all f***ing Arizona. 3) Why are we talking so much about Chris Sale? It's not even a possibility because no GM will risk the assets required to get him on his jerky release. 4) Jesse Crain will not bring back a substantial prospect. Something, yes, but not something exciting. We should be able to get back two Type B prospects in the lower minors (like Jaye/Webb) or another team's 6-12 prospect, depending on the depth of their system. -
Ethier's too old and his splits vs. RHP and LHP are becoming alarming. If we're going to do that kind of deal, I'd pick BJ Upton over Ethier because of his defensive skills and the fact that he's younger and is only one season removed from 27 homers with the Rays. Granted, it's risky. Ethier is a SOLID player, but he doesn't have the all-around ability that Upton has, overall. And, most importantly, we need to get some speed back on our team...other than Ramirez, Rios and DeAza, we're still that same station-to-station team.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 10, 2013 -> 10:39 AM) For old times sake..."Where's our Puig?" Hopefully, in Winston-Salem, in the form of Tim Anderson or yet undiscovered. It is a shame when you think of all the money we invested into Adam Dunn, if we would have been able to get either Puig or Cespedes. And it's not like Jaime Torres didn't try to market his services to us, because of the long-standing relationships with Contreras, El Duque, Alexei and Dayan. Puig might be the closest thing to a young Roberto Clemente in the last 20-25 years. The two players that were closest were a young Sammy Sosa (before the steroids, when he was known as The Panther) and Vladimir Guerrero, but Vladdy never had the speed and sheer sense of abandon in the outfield and on the basepaths. Definitely not a triples hitter. Similar arm strength, though. We've already seen Puig throw a runner out at 1B from the warning track... Cespedes has more pure power than almost anyone in the game, but he's just an adequate CFer (he's more of a corner guy, long-term) and he's not nearly as exciting as Yasiel. We all miss Cubano for his comments on all the players from that country, btw. No idea what happened to him or where he went.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 9, 2013 -> 09:01 PM) exploit- to make use of selfishly or unethically. You can literally NEVER stay on topic and actually respond to a post. I have given up on you, you're a lost cause. All I wanted to know was why you felt the need to tell me what to do with my life, why you felt you could be some sort of counselor to me, why you felt you were in any position to start talking about how I would approach a career in baseball and how you made all of these judgements without knowing anything about me. That's it. Nothing about the percentage of immigrants in a country. Yay. We can agree to block each other. This will be only the second time at soxtalk I've taken such a dramatic step, lol. Sunofgold or sunogold was the first.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 9, 2013 -> 08:24 PM) Just for argument's sake, here is proof of you exploiting an ex on an internet message board. Instead of focusing on that one little point I would prefer you respond to it all. Just want to know where you get off acting in the manner that resulted in my post. (Above) Yes, I'm right up there with child traffickers, internet pornographers and drug smugglers in the Golden Triangle. She has a lot more revealing pictures at her Facebook page, which is open access to anyone. By the way, you do realize 99.2% of those currently living in the US come from "immigrant" families, at some point in their family trees. The only true Americans are Native Americans who currently comprise 0.8% of the population.

Some believe Joe Cowley is still posting at THIS board. And Rongey was here until he gave up...despite Greg775's efforts to appease him. (Love ya, Greg). -
QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 9, 2013 -> 08:13 PM) Ordonez doesn't match up very well with Jones as far as stats/attributes but I meant it in a sense that Ordonez was a notch or two below a superstar and played RF for the Sox for 6-8 years. I find that to be an ideal scenario for Hawkins and the White Sox if all goes well. Adam Jones has been noted as a comp for Hawkins by this site. http://baseballdraftreport.com/tag/courtney-hawkins/ http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...15&start=15 here is a thread where a respected poster lists Hawkins as similar to the prospect version of Jones. Adam Jones is a gazelle in CF, a lot like Devon White from a previous generation of players. Hawkins is big already, and probably going to get even bigger...and definitely profiles as a corner outfielder. Hawkins is athletic and dynamic, but he's not going to ever steal 30-40 bags or be confused with a Gold Glover. So Nelson Cruz with more athleticism/mobility/excitement/dynamism to his game. Cruz is a statue in RF these days.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 9, 2013 -> 07:53 PM) Yeah, you're right I can't but you can't see see the whole city of Chicago 30 floors up let alone watch your favorites team's baseball games or see your family. I may be narrow minded but I'll take what I have here rather than living in Africa or China. I can always visit if the inclination arises. Every place has benefits but there's a reason we have immigration problems in this country. I would love to have this debate, and I've picked up on some of the things you've said about China, but it doesn't belong on the baseball side of the site.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 9, 2013 -> 07:25 PM) Yeah I am with Balta on this. He's got loads of time and we have no idea what their plan is. My hope is that he cuts down the strikeouts and turns into an Adam Jones-Magglio Ordonez (que the steroid jokes) hybrid that trots around the USC RF for several years. Where did you get those two random/tangential comparisons? Magglio Ordonez was a pure hitter, a line drive hitter...back when he was that age. He still had that funny shape in 1994 playing for the Hickory Crawdads, but he was a hitting machine.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 9, 2013 -> 07:33 PM) You're still not responding to the focus of my posts!!!! Quit feeling sorry for yourself. LOL. I assume you're voluntarily sending yourself to these terrible places that aren't America. Just try to respond to the posts you actually quote and stay on the subject of the thread and you'll be fine. Love you Caulfield, Brian Thanks for the writing advice, lol. Living one hour by plane from Bali next year, I'm sure I will continue to feel quite sorry for myself on the beach...haha. Dear Brian, It will take a lot more than a Master's Degree in Sports Administration, a passing knowledge of finance/law/accounting and posting at an MLB team's message board to get a job in baseball. Instead of spending time posting here, you should be doing a summer internship with a major, or worst-case scenario, minor league team in your area. If you can't procure that, you should be learning Spanish and offering to work in the Dominican academies, Venezuela, the Arizona Fall League, winter leagues, any place that will give you an opportunity to gain experience. If that fails, try the Japanese or Korean professional leagues, or scouting in Colombia/Brazil/India (lots of cricket players could be converted, the Pirates have already jumped into the fray in this niche), as well as Taiwan/China. Try to become a part of MLB's Ambassadors program, where you work in foreign countries promoting the sport and putting on coaching/demonstration clinics. Get to know the coaching staff of your local minor league team, invite them out to Hooter's after a game and pick up the tab, ask if they know anyone in the organization who needs help with something (for example, many teams still don't pour enough resources into making sure their Latin ballplayers have an easier assimilation into American Life in the lower minors or short-season teams that are often in small towns/rural places.) Everyone knows sabermetrics, so you have to bring something that's "value added," that differentiates you from the competition. P.S. Those aren't terrible places. They're beautiful. It seems you have never been outside the U.S., if you don't know about amazing destinations such as Victoria Lake/Victoria Falls or Mt. Kilimanjaro. You can't experience an African safari or see a completely star-filled night living in most urban areas of the world these days.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 9, 2013 -> 06:59 PM) Wasn't your post about Puig, Medlen, Minor and the Braves? Not quite the AL Central... I could understand a post about the Hawks/Bulls/Cubs or an AL Central/Wild Card competitor post but your post was both random and irrelevant. Just my two cents that I know you would love to hear. You'll be happy when I am touring in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania this summer that you won't have to fight with me... I guess everyone will still have Marty left to fight with at that time.

QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Jun 9, 2013 -> 06:44 PM) I never said a thing about Nate Jones. I think you have me confused with someone else. I've always liked Edwin, and I respect the work he did here. He should have been given Danks' contract. There are some other mitigating factors. Danks was/is a product of our system, homegrown and a lefty. Part of it was the loyalty factor and "taking care of our own," showing all the minor leaguers they can be set for life if they perform at the big league level. Part of it is his age and the fact that psychologically, they needed an anchor for the rotation to replace Buehrle (and not knowing exactly what they had in Chris Sale as a starter, performance or health-wise.) While Jackson performed as well as Cooper as he has under basically any pitching coach...looking at his erratic career, while it evened out with the White Sox or stabilized, he wasn't the pitcher that you give a 4-5 contract too, unless he was going to be a replacement for Floyd as a 4/5 and not the 2/3 guy those contracts were expecting in terms of performance.

QUOTE (staxx @ Jun 9, 2013 -> 05:35 PM) I think we will see that in the next week or two. No reason to keep him in Kanny anymore, he can obviously perform there. You want the players to enjoy the experience of their respective league's All-Star games before they're promoted...there's no pressing reason to move him up this week, versus next. Most organizations have this philosophy with players that are progressing, unless it's a AA/AAA player needed at the big league level (like Puig for Chattanooga).
