  1. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writ....html?eref=sihp Too little, too late? cnnsi.com (marchman) In the aftermath of the loss, Torre said he was shocked by Ramirez's ejection, which took place with the Dodgers trailing, 8-2. The way Torre later recounted the story, a part of him was startled by how quickly Ramirez was ejected. A part was thinking about whom he would send to hit for Ramirez. And a part was upset at Ramirez, figuring he must have said something vile to home plate umpire Gary Cederstrom to be tossed. After Ramirez's replacement, Reed Johnson, grounded into an inning-ending double play, Torre said he went into the clubhouse to scold Ramirez. But Ramirez told him he never cursed at Cederstorm, an account Torre said the umpire later confirmed. "I was very disappointed in the fact that [Cederstrom] threw him out because he said the pitch was outside and he was 'demonstrative' about it, quote, unquote," Torre said. "What does that mean?" Torre said he apologized to Ramirez. Ramirez had nothing to say on the matter. Like almost every other time he was approached by a reporter this season, he shook his head and said, "No, gracias." dylan hernandez/la times
  2. Mark Kotsay will get some at-bats against right-handers, but his role reverts to a backup first baseman -- where he saved a run with a great defensive play on Sunday -- and a pinch-hitter. As for Mark Teahen, signed to a three-year, $14 million deal before the season started, he will remain the team's super-sub but will have less chances at designated hitter. "The reason we [may] bring him in is maybe those guys don't do their jobs," said manager Ozzie Guillen, speaking hypothetically on Friday -- a time frame when the White Sox could not comment. "When you're a White Sox player, you know what you have to deal with," Konerko said. "It's not going to change much if you're worried about bringing in another personality. We have enough to go around if you look at everybody around here. "Manny can hit, and if he comes here, he'll hit. Wherever he is, he's going to hit. That's just what he does. But I wouldn't worry about the chemistry." Someone's going to end up using one of those quotes in their signatures against Guillen in the offseason, lol.
  3. In all fairness, look at the numbers Damon put up in "new" Yankee Stadium last year. Tiger Stadium isn't a home run hitters' park, obviously. I think his OPS would be up at least 50 points playing 81 games at USCF.
  4. and we've basically recomprised the Dodgers' starting outfield from 2 seasons ago, lol
  5. Reed on the roster should bring us $40,000 in additional revenue. Just joking, Balta. FWIW, this whole Ramirez thing, it might be TOO little too late, but, AS LONG AS WE DON'T USE IT AS AN EXCUSE FOR SPENDING MONEY NEXT YEAR, then I'm fine with it. Marquez used to be a possibility, doubt it anymore. Santeliz? Relievers are one area where we really need to improve, but where there's an obvious organizational weakness.
  6. The only thing I'll say is that we could have had Johnny Damon for 1/2 the season for the same price (pro-rated) we're going to pay Ramirez. (That's assuming we just paid Damon $8 million in the offseason...or Guerrero, or whoever). 90 days of Damon The ONLY advantage we have is the head to head match-up with Minnesota at home, where that SHOULD favor us to take 2/3. However, a sweep really feels imperative, like the Twins did to us in 2008 when they were down by 2 1/2 and left with a one-half game lead when Jenks blew the Carlos Gomez for HOF game.
  7. He'd had two previous starts and his ERA was in the 1's. There's a reason they moved Javy to the bullpen. This kid has really nice stuff...it's not like the Orioles', Indians' (after Carmona) and Royals' (outside of Greinke and Hochevar) pitchers owning us.
  8. Mark Kotsay is the MVP of this team. Jamie
  9. Perfect. Guillen and Manny Ramirez both ejected within two minutes of each other. Gardner was obviously safe, but it seems like the Yankees have gotten 90% of the questionable calls today. How's Harrelson handling the umpiring today? Seems like Guillen has been thrown out of more than 24 or 25 games in his career.
  10. Manny's hitting now with bases loaded in the top of the 6th. And promptly gets thrown out for arguing balls and strikes with the home plate umpire. LOL.
  11. Laughing at Farmer calling Kotsay "a gifted player" and an absolute "delight to have on this team." Praising his versatility, talking about how his diminished playing time could change in a heartbeat. What is it with this guy? It's like the Roberto Clemente Award is more important now than winning the ALCD.
  12. Well, it's very comforting to know that we have Teahen leading off against Mariano Rivera... Ramirez probably trying too hard there after witnessing what happened the last time with Teahen up and him not hitting.
  13. QUOTE (OilCan @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 04:05 PM) E Nunez, 3b. Thank you. We will now win. The odds of that happening just went down by about 90%.
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 04:01 PM) Funny thing is the same type of play literally happened a minute ago in the LLWS game. Who is winning, Hawaii or Japan? I saw Hawaii dismantle Texas but they're showing the Dodgers/Rockies game here in Thailand now. Why the hell does Lillibridge run there when Ozzie ALWAYS bunts the runner over in those situations. UGH.
  15. Now...if only he could have done that against the Twins and Mariners. Oh, well...we still have a puncher's chance here.
  16. I'm not sure this match-up against Granderson, no matter how much he's sucked this year, is a good one for us. Fingers crossed. JENKS, YOU ABSOLUTELY SUCK!!!
  17. QUOTE (OilCan @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 03:53 PM) Robinson Cano is just filthy. The very strange thing about Cano's season is his average has gone down every month...from superhot April and May, very good June and then July and then August has been just so-so until he faced us.
  18. Or if our big "power" injections into the line-up are Viciedo, Flowers and KW selling the idea that Teahen's going to be our everyday 3B, then I don't want to read this board again until April...because all we'll hear about is how our starting rotation (theoretically, with Peavy healthy and/or Sale) could be the best in the majors. That was the same plan coming into this season...didn't work, despite our team being among the MLB leaders in quality starts. Wait, I take that back. If they bring back Kotsay and Jones last year in their same roles, that will be even more infuriating than DeWayne Wise, Mackowiak, Daubach or Erstad in CF.
  19. QUOTE (TheBigHurt @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 03:41 PM) I really hate to say this, but I honestly feel a majority of people here just shoot down any player regardless of who it is. I do agree Manny probably isn't worth the short rental if we have to give up anything of importance, but this race is NOT over yet, and the fact some people try to make it sound as if Manny is just some random deadline scrub is really hilarious. Manny as our DH would be simply exquisite. Yes, the problem is that it would have been MUCH more helpful when we were 4 1/2 games ahead of the Twins in the standings and had the opportunity to crush them. Since that time, it's looking like the Twins have played 17 games over .500 and we're a blase 2 games under the .500 mark. Most importantly, 2-7 versus Minnesota. You just can't hold first place with that head-to-head record against your competition.
  20. Well, this team needs to have a late innings comeback...and that hasn't been one of our strong points all season long. It really feels like we have to win this game, though. In some ways, it's perfectly working out to be a big egg on KW's face that when he finally does acquire a DH, it's too little, too late...documenting for posterity's sake the desperate situation which was created by not addressing that position in the offseason (I'm really really tired of this same subject, but it is what it is...it's likely be seen retrospectively as the #1 flaw in our team the entire season long, especially with Thome ending up contributing so much to the team that ended up ahead of us in the standings).
  21. I'm really really going to hate this offseason if we hear over and over again the reason we can't even resign Konerko is due to Edwin Jackson (well, that has worked out okay) and spending $4.1 million on a superfluous Manny Ramirez. The Rockies are crushing the Dodgers, 7-0. Two nights ago, that was great news...now, not really. 4 more outs until Mo Rivera. UGH.
  22. Having a lame-duck Manny Ramirez on a team ostensibly out of the playoff picture would be a recipe for disaster. Farmer's really really getting on the umpires, and he's usually fairer than Harrelson.
  23. QUOTE (Friend of Nordhagen @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 03:21 PM) This. Or it will become known as the straw that broke the camel's back between Ozzie and KW...with one of them out of the picture.
  24. Is Sale ready to pitch against the Yankees in this situation? I guess we'll find out. Teahen, Kotsay...doesn't really matter, they're just average and below-average MLB players, I don't expect that much out of them. There were never reasons to believe either player should be starting on a VERY GOOD team.
  25. The question is, what prospect do we even have in our system worth $1 million to another team? It's not going to be Mitchell, Thompson or Viciedo....that leaves who? Tyler Flowers? I just can't see who we're going to trade that will "discount" the cash that we're going to have to pay Ramirez significantly. If I'm Coletti, I would ask for Sergio Santos probably...and there's no way KW can do that with the pen in shambles.
