Sox Spring Training notes
Okay that was CS. 18 homers per year...in the minors. But he's been primary a corner in fielder for most of his career...so that's not totally unexpected. Still looking at 650ish, maybe 675 ops production with below average defense in all likelihood at the major league level. "Only Columbus, Durham and Rochester played home games in ballparks that favor hitters in terms of home run rates and run rates. Of these, the Clippers' Huntington Park is the most hitter-friendly park in the IL, with Durham Bulls Athletic Park a close second."

https://www.thebaseballcube.com/content/player/187997/ Gray is already 28 and has less than 30 minor league homers in seven years. Career .764 minor league hitter. .622 lifetime in the majors. Would rather watch Amaya/Gonzalez/Bergolla than someone at 28 with limited trade value. That said all of those guys would probably hit .175 and their defensive advantages would be eradicated. So just play Baldwin at SS. Really quite simple. Him becoming a 2-2.5 fWAR player would a great development coup.

He's not going to ever come close to 20 homers...but call away.

What else is new: Moncada is hurt
Moncada at 3B (#5), Anderson SS (#77) tonight for LAA. Moncada looks noticeably 10-15 pounds heavier. Anderson 1/9 with a homer. Jo Adell GS off May...really like his ability, but even last year with 20 homers and 15 steals, just a 682 ops because of all the K's and struggles with righties. Strong throwing arm as well. Make or break year.

Gray is not a great SS. He's a utility guy. Look at his Rays' background. Amaya is the defender who will help out contact pitchers the most.

Sox Spring Training notes
Baldwin can play pretty much any spot on the field except catcher. Think you're reading way too much into a singular decision. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/tristan-gray/19877/stats?position=1B Gray is actually still listed at 1B 3B. Then he moved to the middle infield more recently...if they wanted to roster him, there was zero reason to sign Rojas. The only logical argument is that Josh Rojas will somehow lead to more wins...and avoiding 121 losses again.

Strip out Benintendi's second half...Robert at 3+ fWAR, we're back to Vaughn Teel and Colson as the best offensive players. Yikes.

Ishbia increasing minority stake in Sox
TN was never a realistic option after all the public monies were committed to the Titans' facility. You could even argue there's less of a need for a Nashville mlb team with the tens of millions pouring into the SEC for sports like men's and women's basketball, gymnastics, baseball coaches and staff more highly paid than big league teams. If there's ever going to be another two MLB markets...one of them is either Charlotte or a third Texas team across the South.

That instinct has been proven wrong with TB and Miami attendance issues. Domed stadiums are challenging. Perhaps Orlando and Vegas can work eventually.

Ishbia increasing minority stake in Sox
It's the idea they could be the Mets or Angels...the second team in a large market. And with a new downtown stadium and continued non-competitiveness from the Cubs in terms of long term spending...at least get back to 2005-2008 if not the early 90s feeling.

Just want to watch entertaining/interesting baseball wherever it's to be found. They're hardly beating down the gates waiting to get into non Dodgers games in Glendale. For example, LA vs. Angels tonight...

With all the veteran scouts that have been cut or retired...might be 10-15% overall growth on the development/analytics side, but you're probably talking $7.5-10 million reallocated overall...at most. Including new equipment/tech.

But not exactly exciting either. Leasure the best stuff of that group. Cubs, for example, have scored six runs in the last two innings...tied 8-8 with Texas. That's our entire spring offense.

Sort of...but nobody had a hit other than Quero though. Sac fly walk wp offense doesn't exactly excite.

Friday, 2/28 - Sox @ Angels, 2:10 CST start time
This is exactly like 2017-2018...all that available playing time produced not so much as an Alejandro de Aza on the position player side. Then shockingly there was just no quality depth when anyone went down from 2019-2021. Who was in charge of development then? Oh..

2025 MLB season...catch-all for non-Sox, non AL-Central
Trace Thompson and Zavala playing for Red Sox... Crochet 97-99 but wild...pulled after 41 pitches, victim of abs challenge when he appeared to be out of the inning. Dominant in first, three walks in second. Anthony Campbell Mayer hitting 1-2-3. Campbell still hitless. All these guys with good obp skills/eyes/strike zone judgement. Mayer really has a great eye up there.
