  1. Guys that can afford to own baseball teams didn't get to that position by throwing good money after bad into the garbage. I've made my feelings known in the past about the Sox's budget. It is what it is for a reason. No use in flipping the bird on a message board about it. Personally, I am not losing much sleep over Maggs. Money not spent on him can be spent elsewhere.
  2. Downstate is solidly Republican, but it doesn't matter. As long as Kerry can get 50 or so votes outside of Chicagoland, he'll win. Oh, and the St. Louis metro area will vote Kerry too.
  3. You're kidding yourself if you believe that. Lott's statement about Thurmond happened afterward and I highly doubt more than a handful of people present knew anything about Lott's lightly publicized racial statements before that.

    Best Subs

When I used to work downtown some years ago I used to eat at Wall Street Subs in Northwestern train station. Absolutely the best sandwhich I've ever had on the best bread. Avanti's, down here in central Illinois, also has excellent subs.
  5. Tex, it sounds like rather than a non-partisan funeral you want a bi-partisan funeral. There is a big difference. If a democrat were asked to speak to balance the "ticket", it would be anything but non-partisan. And elsewhere in this thread the Wellstone service was called "quasi-politcal". That is laughable. And cw made reference to Trent Lott being a white supremecist. I guess Democratic Sen. Byrd of WV, a former member of the KKK, would have been booed as well? Lott was not booed because of any perceived racist philosophy.
  6. I don't understand how it could be said that this funeral is being made partisan. I have heard of four people speaking, Mulroney (the Canadian guy), Thatcher, and the two Bushes. Bush I was his VP, so it makes perfect sense that he would speak. Bush II is the current president. It would be ridiculous to think that the sitting president wouldn't speak about what Reagan meant to the country he is leader of. And last I heard, Thatcher and the Canuck are not Republicans. Perhaps the better question is why would Clinton speak? Surely there are hundreds of people who were closer to Reagan than he. Someone stated they spoke regularly through Clinton's 8 years. Those conversations must have been doozies, considering Reagan was suffering from Alzheimer's through at least 6 of those years. Besides, I have to question Clinton's motives. Did he love the man so strongly that he can't imagine not being able to sing his praises, or does he want more camera time?

    Flag Facts

My biggest pet peeve about the flag is when I see people fly the flag at half staff for things that it was not meant for. I understand that you're upset that your dog died, but flying the American flag at half staff is not appropriate.
  8. I'm a huge fan of Reagan, but I voted no. Alexander Hamilton is also an important American figure and shouldn't be replaced. We can't keep phasing out old American heroes for the new. That is how nations and cultures lose their sense of history.
  9. Are we thinking of the pride of Beverly, Naked Raygun?
  10. I'm sure that was just a poor attempt at wit, but that is really a stupid statement. This nation is approximately half Republican. So half of the country is wealthy? Reagan was an excellent president. You don't have to be wealthy to have benefited from his service.
  11. Then why keep saying things to provoke an argument? One can acknowledge a fact without condoning it. Nuke is hardly the first to state that national morale was at a low point when Reagan took over. No need to argue the fact that it shouldn't have been the case...it was, end of story.
  12. Wong, it seems to me that you are implying that men have less problem with being cheated on than do women. I get this from your point that straight men don't sleep around as much as gay men because straight men's women wouldn't go for that. Sorry, but if my wife cheated on me I think we'd be through. Do gay men in relationships have less problem with being betrayed, humiliated, and lied to than straight men?
  13. ...says the man with half naked models in his signature!
  14. Take attention away from the outcome of the game? Why? They've lost 20 games this season...does he banish a player from the organization after every loss? It was a loss in late May. No need to do this to take attention away from a loss, especially when no one in Chicago is really watching.
  15. Went to the Sunday game. Froze my ass off once the shadows reached the upper deck behind the plate, but stuck it out all 8.5 innings.
  16. Jeeze, Tex. Kinda worked up over this, eh? Who here ever said they don't believe the newspapers? Who here suggested they told lies? You can't tell someone definitively that they are wrong when they say they believe that if Bush got his knob gobbed in the Oval Office he'd take a much harsher beating from the media than Clinton did. How did we find out about Monica, Whitewater, etc. you ask? The media told us the facts, of course. The question in the minds of people who believe the media is biased isn't if we are getting the information. It is how it is given and how it is emphasized. The media didn't give us the impeachment hearings like it was a made-for-TV event. Congress gave us that, as did Clinton, indirectly. You attack people who believe there is a bias in the media as if they are for squashing the Constitution. People can be pro-information and dislike the way it is conveyed, without wanting to ban information. s***, if I complain about Darrin Jackson, you would say that I am screaming about shutting down the White Sox! And Apu, that is good evidence of lack of bias in the print media. I would question the use of the quote from Bill Kristol though. For one, I am not sure what context it was in, and secondly, contrary to Jim saying he says the idea of bias is bunk, Kristol says that it wasn't that powerful. That isn't denying it exists. If I say that Bartman didn't cost the Cubs the series, I am not saying he never touched the ball. Bias is perception. Bernard Goldberg made good points in saying there is liberal media bias in the major networks. Dan Rather is very liberal. The fact that he is one of the major newscasters in the country immediately leads to bias. And people are just naturally sensitive about what they are close to. If I have to read one more thing here about how ESPN is biased against the White Sox and the Midwest, I'll puke. But I'm sure ESPN says good things about the Sox when warranted and bad things when warranted. The thing about bias about the war is this, IMO. Soldiers dying is news. Opening a watermain in Baghdad isn't. A prisoner with panties on his head is more intriguing than an Iraqi child hugging a G.I. I do believe that there is much more good going on in Iraq than bad. This is because I have read and heard enough from soldiers there to know that. I can also see the bias in Hannity and Rush and know to take them with a grain of salt. Whenever they get a caller who challenges them with facts and reason, they shoot them down by accusing them of being put up to calling by the DNC. And for the record, I didn't believe Clinton should be impeached. Yeah, I was pissed in that I knew that if I had an intern fellate me on the job, I'd be fired, but I wasn't for the huge $$$ spent in prosecuting him. I also had no problem with him lying about it. I know that if I had done that, I'd lie through my teeth about it.
  17. Two guys on the radio, one guy on cable, one guy on the internet, and I have no idea where to read, hear, or watch Reagan. The liberal media referred to by most is mainstream media, i.e. the major networks, CNN, NPR, etc. And any media outlet that isn't as liberal as those, i.e. Fox News, the WSJ, are viewed as Conservative propaganda machines. Besides, who in the world is dismissing the right to a free press? Someone can believe that the media is biased without infringing on anyone's right to free press. I don't see how it is possible to deny the fact that the mainstream media is biased when soldier after soldier comes back from Iraq or writes back and says that the way the situation is being portrayed in much different than the reality. Even if they are only half right, that is 50% more than we are hearing or reading. Also, I assume your reference to criticism of Clinton being viewed as 100% accurate by Republicans is a joke, seeing as there wasn't any criticism.
  18. Parents were told that that was what you do. I recently saw a special on babies born with both male and female gentialia. Doctors would insist on removing the malformed penis and raising the child as a girl. Recently, one doctor went so far as to remove the one testicle against the parents wishes, falsely claiming that the testicle was cancerous.
  19. Was Daniel Pearl given a trial before his beheading? If it wasn't Al Qaeda or Zaquari, why hasn't a denial been issued? Not that it should be believed if one were issued, but the fact that they haven't denied it means a little bit. The fact that no one at Berg's hotel knew of him doesn't tell us anything. He contacted people after he was released and said he wasn't mistreated. If westerners were going to murder him, one of the first things to do to make it look real is to get him out of a prisoner's jumpsuit. Iraqis aren't that tall? Fine, but bin Laden and Zaquari are both very tall. Arabs can be tall. What a bunch of hooey.
  20. My mother-in-law refuses to spend a state quarter. She has a barrel of these damn things. I keep telling her hoarding money is against the law, but she doesn't care. (Is that true? I remember once being taught that haording money, taking it out of circulation, is illegal) Personally, she can hoard them if she wants, but don't give me s*** about spending my state quarters while you're at it.
  21. You're right. My bad. Yeah, didn't he die after playing hockey or something like that? He was very young.
  22. Regardless of his sexual identity problems, what a selfish bastard. He blew the family's savings, so he kills himself, leaves his wife a widow, children fatherless, and most likely flat broke. Sorry, suicides bring out the anger in me.
  23. Tim Weigle As for Giangreco supposedly making fun of Walter, he had no way of knowing he was sick. The guy should be cut some slack. Giangreco likes hockey, so he's OK in my book.
  24. This unit sounds like something right out of Stripes! I suspect that next week we'll hear about how they stole an armored recreational vehicle and invaded Iran.
