QUOTE (Kalapse @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 09:10 PM) Jim Thome does everything but hit singles. His triples are down a little this year.

For Saturday, I'd like to see Torres again. I'd also like to see Huddy promoted to Charlotte after his tenth B'Ham start so he can get some seasoning in a hitters park against more experienced hitters. And I'm hoping to see the two of them duel for the 5th spot in the rotation next ST.

Did you see his batting average after the game, .316? In his case it should be list as Beckham 3:16 Downright eerie!

QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 4, 2009 -> 01:37 PM) I thought it was to see if his arm isn't completely dead. If he doesn't have the arm strength now, he'll probably never have it. I love me some Freddy, but I don't like his odds. I think I want to see Torres again this Sunday if that's possible. Not that anxious to see Freddy or the return of Fatolo.

Gregor Speculation: Sox should offer Dye extension

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 3, 2009 -> 08:30 PM) Who preferably hits LH...so that means the likes of Dunn and/or Abreu, Blalock could also be brought in for 3B with Beckham shifting, giving us a very very potent offensive line-up. Will probably see either Kotsay OR Wise around next year, too. Love Dunn's bat, but you don't want to see him anywhere near the outfield. 1B or DH only for him. Dunn is the best way to make a terrible defensive outfield even worse. -
Stupid article. Hardball Times ain't all that. Among the numerous flaws in the article, it fails to mention the value to a playoff rotation that the trade creates.

Based upon what we now have, coupled with KW's payroll flexibility, I will "conservatively" estimate 95 wins for our beloved.

Sox versus Yankees August 1, 2009 game thread

Alright boys, save some for MB tomorrow. -
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 08:21 PM) Dayan just isn't going to look back, is he? Nice to see Tyler Flowers with his best AAA game yet. With the Peavy acquisition, Q returning to form, Dayan establishing consistent studliness, Flowers figuring it out at AAA, and the Tigers and Twins both losing in extra innings, THIS is an even better day than Buehrle's perfect game. I don't say that lightly.

QUOTE (Pumpkin Escobar @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 12:47 PM) I agree. For several reasons. Right now Ricciardi is benefiting from Halladay being the only real dominant starter available. Had Peavy and Webb been healthy - they'd be in the discussion for available aces. If the offseason hits - Halladay is now a 1 year rental instead of 2. He is one year older. Potential for injury in Septermber (unlikely but why risk it if your intention is to deal him). There will be cheaper options available via FA - not to mention a whole new crop of guys in the final 1-2 years of their contracts (sort of like how Halladay wasnt this available last season but CC was) who will be open for a trade. There is more then that I'd imagine. Why this moron is being so stubborn is beyond me. Get what you can and move on so you can focus on rebuilding this offseason instead of focusing on how to dump players. Couldn't agree more. Ricciardi's going to look like a clown when he makes a deal next year at this time for far less.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 11:55 AM) I wish KW would get crazy and find a decent package of prospects for PK. Let Fields play first and see if he can figure it out, and then bring back Thome and Dye for next year. If Fields doesn't show improvement offensively, try and bring in an Adam Dunn or someone else to play first. I know it won't be popular, but Paulie is having a solid year and you may be able to actually get a few solid prospects for him. I have a feeling if we were to win this division it wouldn't be because of the difference between Konerko's production and Fields. But, I know it won't happen. Sorry, but I've seen plenty of Josh Fields. I'm seriously hoping this is his last day in a Sox uni. Don't really care what we get, as with BA, just want to move on.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 12:39 PM) Good points. I disagree on Lester. I think he's pretty damn good. The depth of quality SP they appeared to have going into the season has not come through to this point. However, other than maybe Tampa, I don't see anybody that can challenge them for the WC (assuming the Yankees win the East). And with Beckett (arguably the best postseason pitcher of this era), Lester, their bullpen and offense, they'd have as good a chance as anyone to win it all. Texas is only 1 and a half games behind, though I know they're pretty banged up. Nothing is guaranteed, but if they get in, sure, they'll have a great chance if Beckett is at his best.

QUOTE (League @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 12:37 PM) Hagadone & Masterson. I have no idea what the Tribe is thinking. Martinez is a special hitter. They could have done a lot better.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 12:05 PM) Ellsbury Pedroia Youkilis Bay Martinez Ortiz Lowell Drew Lowrie/Green Not fun for opposing pitchers. Their offense is vastly improved, no doubt. They still have serious issues with their starting pitching, IMO, despite all the BS talk of their so-called depth. They've got TWO legit starters right now, Beckett and Lester, and Lester isn't as good as advertised. Neither is Buccholz, who if it wasn't for his no-hitter, wouldn't be considered half the prospect that he is. He's no baby - he'll be 25 next week. Dice-K, Smoltz, Penny, etc. have given them nothing, and quite frankly, I think Dice-K was doing it with mirrors when he had success previously. The guy is the living definition of a nibbler. Wakefield is 42 with a bad back - who knows if he'll return to form? I actually have a small bit of concern that the idiots on ESPN actually help the PED Sox org. by constantly overrating them and their 'spects. All we heard in ST was how good Smoltz was going to be when he returned, for instance. BTW, we have 8 games with them not 7. This year, for some reason, we seem to play better against the better teams. Hopefully, that continues.

Where's Mike Lowell? He's lost about 6 inches of chest thickness, and most of his homers became doubles since his Marlin days. -
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 10:23 AM) Which is encouraging. Besides the injuries, that was the one problem with BMac, absolutely no movement on his fastball. IIRC, BMac had a much higher HR allowed rate.

We need to stop talking about Nix as a replacement for anyone as an every day player. He CAN'T hit right handed pitching, and most pitchers are right handed. He's a platoon player who's being used properly this year, so he's a good contributor. It's as simple as that.

Manny and Big Papi tested positive for steroids in 03

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 01:11 PM) So what if they are? It doesn't take away from the fact that Ortiz tested positive for steroids. It almost seems like you're pulling the line so often connected with players when they're names are released, and that's attacking the messenger or their motivations for releasing information rather than the person them self. Not my intention - you're jumping to conclusions, Flash. You won't find me apologizing for any of these guys. I wouldn't vote any of them into the Hall. That doesn't change the fact that when these guys gave up their pee, they were promised anonymity in the results. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 12:20 PM) I think there's a good chance the steroid era started well before anyone has realized it. BTW, did you ever hear the story about Pud Galvin? (great name for a rock band, but I digress) He was baseball's first 300 game winner and a HOF pitcher. He, allegedly, injected himself with monkey testosterone before starts in 1899. Now there's a visionary for you. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 12:20 PM) I think there's a good chance the steroid era started well before anyone has realized it. Agreed. But I also think that things really exploded after '98. A whole bunch of players saw the success/publicity/endorsements happening to Sosa/McGwire and knew they were enhanced. Sosa was hanging with the Clintons at the State of the Union address for Christ's sake. Many players, I am sure, said to themselves "I want ME some of THAT". Look at all the players who had great or breakthrough seasons in '99. There are many, including our beloved JD. Not accusing, just sayin'. -

Bagwell, BTW, now looks TINY if you ever see him interviewed. He has been suspected for a while, actually. -

Another thing I'd really like to know is how and why these names are being leaked, who's doing the leaking, and why they're being leaked one by one. My conjecture is that the leaker or leakers are being paid - HANDSOMELY - and that there's more money in it for them by doing it this way. Some dirty dealing is going on, that's for certain. -

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 12:07 PM) Agreed. You can't put guys there just because you think they took steroids. It's like someone saying they think Frank Thomas juiced and add him to a list. They have as much credibility as you. I don't remember Bagwell being linked, but he may have. Does anyone remember? I'd be shocked if Kent was clean, frankly. Innocent until proven guilty is a nice ideal, but rather unrealistic in this toxic environment. The news on Papi is the biggest non-surprise of the year. The man has the largest skull I've ever seen. It wasn't that big when he was a Twinkie. The revelations about Manny were much more surprising to me, personally, because he put up great numbers prior even to the dawn of the so-called steroid era. I now believe he was one of the "pioneers", relatively speaking. -
QUOTE (docsox24 @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 11:36 AM) I think there is significant doubt that Danks will be the CF of the future. I think this board is way too high on him and he has a lot to prove as to whether he would be a good enough hitter to be a full time player. He could very well end up being Brian Anderson part deux. Unfortunately, I tend to agree with this. His numbers remind me too much of the BA's and Sweeney's of the world.
