QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 10:45 AM) SoxTalk's lack of a working search function really hampers Cowley's reporting.

QUOTE (onedude @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 08:47 AM) De Aza to me is a poor mans Carl Crawford. I'll take that! -

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 29, 2011 -> 08:22 PM) Call up Tim Laker. Good one, and there's some merit to it. Lots of guys improved this year, and more importantly during this year down in Charlotte. If we do, in fact, replace Walk, this guy deserves consideration. -

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Aug 29, 2011 -> 12:49 PM) I would have Beckham batting in the 10 spot and Rios batting leadoff/playing CF in a batting cage somewhere far away from the team. -
IF the Sox come back and finish only 1 or 2 games out,

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Aug 29, 2011 -> 12:34 AM) Its always easy to second guess your favorite teams management but sometimes there are situations where something that seems so obvious to even the fans that it truly is amazing that people who are paid professionals seemingly miss the boat. Im not going to argue that the majority of the fan base had been clamoring for De Aza or Flowers. There may have been some people who wanted to see those guys called up but it certainly wasnt a situation like replacing Dunn with Viciedo at some point earlier in the season. Despite what he is being paid Dunn has been destroying our offense all season. Who knows how many games could have been won with another competent bat in the line up instead of someone batting around .160 who strikes out nearly half of his at bats. We had a promising hitter in the minors all season and continued to use Dunn in or around the middle of our lineup everyday. This isnt some advanced baseball knowledge that only extreme students of the game can figure out, this is common sense that any reasonable person could come up with. Its comparable to how the Bears needed to improve their offensive line after last season. Some situations in sports should be painfully obvious to everyone, whether it be casual fan or management of a professional team. Great post, Bomber. -
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 06:42 PM) Means nothing. Bench or even third base coach is by far better preperation to manage in the majors than managing in the minors is. Tony La Russa barely had a cup of coffee on a major league coaching staff and was promoted to coach the Sox from AAA after working up through the minors. Whitey Herzog was in player development, primarily. Point is, many different paths to managerial success. New blood has to come from somewhere. I'm guessing that the idea of anything Cub in a Sox uni is your real objection.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 06:25 PM) Sandberg has no business even being interviewed for a managerial position. Huh? Porque no? Been a success everywhere he's been in the minor leagues.

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 06:12 PM) This one today was pretty impressive. Flowers is the guy ATL didn't want to part with these days. How good does that Javy trade look right now? One helluva lot better. Gilmore might even be turning into a prospect now, possibly. Santos Rodriguez still has an outside chance. Hell, I was happy just having the salary and the loser-stink of Javy off the club.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 05:37 PM) I don't know why we need compensation. He only has one year left on his deal and the Sox don't want him anyway. So why not just let him go to Florida so the Sox can hopefully name Sandberg ASAP. It better not be Cora or Buddy Bell or LaRussa. LaRussa is a crabby old man. Let Tony retire and write books about how baseball should be played LaRussa style. I also want Sandberg, or possibly Dave Martinez. IF we can get some comp. for Oz, why not try? They may call our bluff, but nothing to lose really.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 05:45 PM) I don't think he'll get enough at bats to do that. We still have Oz being stubborn in his final 4 weeks as mayor of the South Side. Oz isn't going to play him regularly IMO. Dunn n Rios baby. He wants to prove a point that no manager could win with those 2 albatrosses. Proven. Time to move on.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 05:34 PM) How come this is only a big deal on Soxtalk? The media did not take Oz's joke as you did. This is no big deal. The article I read pointed out how much Oz likes "Tank." p.s. Hey, Kenny, Dayan homers today and knocks in three. Dunn hasn't homered in a month. Yet you wouldn't bring him up. Nice move. (And if Ozzie prevented it, that's another sign Kenny must go; GMs should have personnel power. And Dayan is a god!!) If Ozzie prevented it, it's a sign that the power structure that JR created is f***ed. Personally, I believe that KW felt that he no longer had the ammo to force personnel decisions on Ozzie, with the stink of Dunn and Rios so fresh on his person, knowing that Ozzie could throw this up at him in any public squabble. IMO, KW is guilty of being gutless. Ozzie is guilty of being stupid.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 04:26 PM) Yes, and it's quite hilarious. What will his angle be next season when Ozzie is in Miami? I hope and I pray. Ozzie so deserves Loria.
-
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 04:23 PM) Gotta love this one: @scottmerkin My point was Q should have been moved near the deadline, and Dunn a bench player. But ur GM didn't have balls for that. Clearly Kenny's fault for not benching Dunn. Hilarious. And wow, what passes for expertise!
-
QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 03:51 PM) Do you blame him? We really need to get Dunn out his slump and Rios is an established mlb player. Yes. However, since nothing they do between now and 9/28 will make them tradeable, and since we're married to them for three more seasons, this task can wait.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 02:25 PM) Yes, lets all judge him by a couple of bad outings, instead of by his numbers. Yeah, he's got a decent track record in a brutally tough division so he deserves some benefit of the doubt. Probably just a bad period for him, but 3.75M ain't peanuts either, so what they do with him WILL likely depend on his performance over the next few weeks.

QUOTE (StatManDu @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 03:51 PM) Tyler Flowers' grand slam today was the first by a Sox rookie catcher since Miguel Olivo went deep with the bags drunk at Wrigley on June 20, 2003 And a freakin' monster it was.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 05:04 AM) I've really enjoyed watching these games with the Wimperoo. Hawk seems far more relaxed with Paciorek cracking jokes the entire game. I suppose it would get old eventually, however. We need to go on a major run at this point, which is incredibly unlikely, considering we haven't won more than 5 in a row all year long. Something like 24-8 to even have a chance... That's because Stone has the unmitigated gall to actually disagree with the Hawk occasionally, however subtly. Hawk's happy 'cause he knows the Wimperoo would never consider such an indiscretion.

QUOTE (SI1020 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 01:12 PM) I agree that it could be a good deal, I'm just not ready to call it that yet. I need to see a lot more of Stewart and Frasor hasn't been all that great. I haven't made a call on it as a good trade/bad trade either, but the early returns are not horrific despite Frasor's not-so-goodness.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 01:09 PM) If you believe this season is over, this is 100% true. You know Dunn is going to be back, and benching him isn't going to help for 2012 I can't agree here. Dunn isn't going to just "get it" at this point in the season, and we have to see what we have in other prospects as we head into next year. Either way, Dunn should have to earn his AB's by showing what he can do in ST. Yes, I know he'll be on the roster - doesn't mean he should be allowed to destroy another whole season.
-
QUOTE (SI1020 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 01:04 PM) Seriously? What did I miss? That young, cheap, and under control Zach Stewart has been about as good as EJax for the Cards or Rasmus for the Jays, among other things, apparently.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 27, 2011 -> 10:20 PM) Amazing start by Danks! Trade value UP. After Cashman is appropriately vilified for the stupidity of bringing a $220M payroll to the playoffs with 1 legit starter, he'll be a helluva suitor.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 10:03 PM) That's no good for me. Viciedo in RF is fine. I don't think Lillibridge or De Aza are everyday players. I liken Lilly to the role Mike Napoli has filled for the Rangers. Napoli has started at 1B. C and DH. Lilly can play all 3 OF positions, 2B, 1B and DH. There's plenty of at bats for him without overexposing him. De Aza is a 4th OF to me. Rios is going nowhere, obviously. I do want a LF with some pop. I have to agree, at least in regards to the Elf. ~300AB's in a super-utility role would be the best plan for him next season, IMO, and we'll see how that goes. I'm going to reserve a call on De Aza role until after the season. I love the guy, but need to see more before deciding if he is or isn't an everyday guy. His career path has been different enough that he really could be that rare diamond in the rough. Getting a confident grasp on the capabilities of these guys should be a primary goal as we play out the string.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 09:48 PM) They need to develop a WAR metric for managers. Ozzie's would be -14.5. Brent should have way more than 160 ABs. Yes, it's insane. It's amazing to me that anyone can support Ozzie after this season, where endless opportunities were given to the worthless, and precious few were given to the productive.
