If the White Sox sign both Harper and Machada AND plan on having a mid tier payroll then that is dumb and bad. However unlikely you think the Sox signing both are it is even less likely that they would go be extremely cheap with the rest of the roster.

Arenado would be two and a half years older than Machado is right now when he signs next year. I think it will be hard for him to get more (or the same) years as Machado does this off-season unless things start to change drastically next year.

This is definitely true if he signs with the White Sox, but if he signs with not the White Sox it will be much more annoying if he does it in March instead of December. It will really turn me off on the team if he doesn't sign as we hear for months on end that the White Sox are the in it (and possibly the only real suitor) and still haven't managed to sign him.

If you had four years of control, say two years pre-arb and two years of arbitration, I could see there being more 5-7 year deals that are currently deemed "team friendly" deals signed before a player's debut and maybe after their rookie year.
