How many games will the White Sox win in 2019?
TomPickle replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
68 Eloy will be the ROY, Moncada will take a step forward, Lopez's peripherals will catch up to his results (but his ERA and W-L will be about the same), Giolito will prove to be a competent starting pitcher, but everyone else pretty much is who they were last year and the bullpen isn't much better. Hopefully the farm system doesn't suffer anymore major injuries and the guys that are currently healthy look good, because I don't feel too good about the rebuild right now. -
Eloy playing in 1200 games seems less likely than surpassing 30 WAR
-
Under, only 6 OFs have greater than 30 fWAR over the past 8 years.
-
I will say that this deal could make a ton of sense depending on how it is structured. If they don't go super cheap on the first three years say something like this 2019: $5 MM 2020: $8 MM 2021: $10 MM 2022-24: $15 MM 2025-26: $16 MM If Eloy lives up to the billing it would be very valuable to have a guy like that making something in the mid teens. You would be "over-paying" in the short term, but the White Sox can definitely afford to eat that small cost with the payroll as it currently stands.
-
Given that Eloy's first three years are going to be near the league minimum this is basically a 5 year deal for ~$98 MM. I don't really see why you would give that kind of money to a player that doesn't have a major league at bat to their name. It also makes not calling him up last year really dumb. So basically what I'm saying here is that this is right in the White Sox wheelhouse.

3/5 - Home vs. Pads (Giolito) / Away vs. Cleveland (Cease!!!)

Personal opinions on Sox rebuild pieces.
TomPickle replied to Jack Parkman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Moncada: I think will be a good player, but will fall well short of reaching the hype a #1 overall prospect gets tagged with. I do not trust the White Sox to develop bat-to-ball skills. Anderson: He'll stick at short and be a solid regular Rodon: I think he is what he is and will never be consistent enough to be better than a #3 Lopez: I like him a lot more than the projections have him this year. He's almost as inconsistent as Giolito, but he has the stuff to overcome it better when he's not "on" I think he will be at worst a valuable mid-rotation pitcher. Giolito: I hope he can develop into an innings eating 4/5 but I have my doubts Prospects: Eloy: He's going to be very good and I'm not worried he's going to be doomed into being a 1B/DH when he's 25 Robert: I think he's the second best prospect in the Sox system, but he hasn't stayed healthy. Obviously staying on the field is as important or more than anything else. I think he's a top 15 prospect going into next year if he plays in 120 games. Madrigal: I think he'll cap out as a 3/4 WAR player similar to Moncada, but it will be in a less frustrating way that makes him more of a fan favorite Other OFs in the system: Rutherford > Basabe > Adolfo > Gonzalez > Walker Collins & Burger: Won't cut it at catcher and third, respectively. I'll take Collins with a better shot at being a big leaguer. Kopech: I think he will be fine after the injury and should still slot into one of the 1/2 spots in the rotation Cease: I think he'll be similar to Lopez. I don't think he has great fastball command or a third pitch. Dunning & Hansen: I don't really trust either at this point I don't really have strong opinions on any of the pitching prospects This is not going to be enough to build anything other than a fringe playoff contender with only internal options. -
I don't know just how baseless this speculation is, but I will bite and pretend it's true for just a second. Why is Keith Law a better evaluator of talent than everyone in the White Sox organization?

Nolan Arenado to sign extension with the Rockies

Disagree, it also highlights the incompetency of the Machado negotiations. -
Nolan Arenado to sign extension with the Rockies

Hahn has seen War Games a few too many times and treats free agency like Thermonuclear Warfare. The only winning move is not to play. -

For all the board insiders here, does information flow both ways? If so, could you please run this message up the flagpole to the front office for me: eat shit lol -
Oh, I have absolutely no faith whatsoever that the White Sox would sign him if he does hit free agency. It's just that he's probably the last of the mega-deal type options out there.
-
Anthony Rendon has some injury history, but not the past three seasons. He's every bit as good as Machado and Arenado. He would be a great fit as a #2 hitter.
-
Agreed, the only thing he could possibly be turning down is more total money and lower AAV on maybe an 8 year deal.
-
look at this post: Thank you though for being yet another person in this thread explaining something to me that I clearly understand.
-
You guys are both saying because the White Sox would control Eloy's service time in a less optimal fashion (ie becoming a free agent one year earlier by being called up in 2018 instead of 2019) that the White Sox would lose a year of control. I am saying that isn't true, because they would still have gotten 7 years of control. This is insane to me that you both continue to respond. If you think I am a crazy person then just stop responding lol. This is because I said the White Sox are not able to play the moral high ground card after not calling him up in 2018. That Eloy was ready to be called up in September of 2018 for baseball ability reasons alone is objectively true. Whether or not that makes sense for the White Sox as a baseball team is another matter entirely.
-
Congrats
-
If you call up Eloy late enough in the season to the point where he is super 2 eligible instead (or even after!) that year would not count as a full year of service time and you would get 7 years of control. Obviously, if you call him up in 2018 that 7th year of control will come one year earlier than if you called him up in 2019 (after a certain date as both of you are so keen to point out). The number of your years of control do not change! That is all I am saying. The dates of those years of control can obviously be changed when a player is called up. We all understand everything about this situation, but since I said that the White Sox could have called up Eloy when he was ready as a player instead of gaming the system you are pretending I don't. I even acknowledged multiple times that I am against calling up Eloy to start the next year as it would make not calling him up last year way dumber.
-
Both of you guys are just being difficult for no reason. You both understand exactly what I am saying and again I am not even advocating calling up Eloy to start the season. I understand single digit numbers and the rules of baseball. Please stop quoting me.
-
7 years remains 7 years no matter when a player is called up the major leagues.
-
You don't lose a year of control. I didn't even advocate calling him up to start the season in this thread. I was just replying to a post that said the White Sox could pretend to take the moral high ground on calling up Eloy sooner. I guess they should have held Moncada down another season too though, why not lose 162 games and just run out a team full of players DFA'd by the Twins?
-
If you called up Eloy in May of 2018 how much less Eloy would you really be getting? Also no one has any idea what the next CBA is going to look like so these dumb games may not have even netted the White Sox any extra Eloy.
-
It's pretty hard to play the moral high ground card when it was completely indefensible to not call him up in September or earlier and they didn't anyway.
