Official 2008-2009 College Football Thread

I just want to know why Tennessee football thought back to back 10 win seasons in 06 and 07 put him on the hot seat in the first place. It's Tennessee and they play in the SEC. They were in the SEC title game last year. The thing I keep hearing is that they are only 14-12 in his last 26 SEC games. Why is that firable? It's usually (though, not this year) the deepest conference in the country. I can see some logic to it, but I think it's rather absurd for Tennessee to think they are better than this guy. -

I know a lot of stuff would have to happen, but Utah is 8 in the BCS. I would love to see Penn State vs. Utah in the BCS title game because I think Utah would win. -

It means way less than it used to. There are more 'prestigious' programs having bad stretches than ever before. I don't think that's a coincidence. It all comes down to coaching. If you have a good coach, you'll be good. If you have a bad coach, you'll be bad. The difference is that teams with deeper pockets can more likely lure those coaches away. -

Well, on the upside those most points allowed in a half and a quarter records are no longer held by an 'imposter program.' -

QUOTE (rangercal @ Nov 1, 2008 -> 09:30 PM) I'd be willing to bet whoever the team it is you root for probably does not have 10% of the program success Nebraska has had. You're probably a little jealous of Nebraska and love to see them down. They will be back. Oklahoma had it's down years, USC, Florida st ect. The impostors like Kansas, Missouri, Texas Tech, Maryland all come back down to earth after their 2 year runs. Right. Well good thing they are a joke of a program now so I can laugh at them while I can. Are you a Nebraska fan or something? I just made a comment about a team going down 28 points in less than 6 minutes. That's disgustingly horrible and I am going to mention that. -

Haha Nebraska. Give up a TD in no time to go down 7-0. First play on offense, pick 6. 14-0 OU. 2 plays later Nebraska fumble. OU scores on the ensuing drive in 3 plays. 2 plays later ANOTHER pick. One play later 28-0. Pffft. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 11:57 PM) I saw Obama tonite. Pretty interesting. Ditto.

QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 03:51 PM) This has Jenks/Quentin written all over it. I like it. A lot. On a much smaller scale maybe. Jenks was a K machine with a 100 MPH fastball in AA and Quentin had shown ability in the Majors while being one of the game's biggest prospects for a time. Nix is a busted first rounder other than one season in the low minors. Still though, I like the move too. Nothing to lose.

Mark May tonight went off about how Texas is so efficient offensively. They scored 28 points today. If Oklahoma State puts up another TD and beats Texas, it's Texas' offense was finally contained this year. Sports media (essentially ESPN, but what's the difference?) is embarrassingly brainless. -

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Oct 26, 2008 -> 12:12 AM) USC turning in another gutless performance at Arizona. No way those guys should be even within 2-3 TD's of USC. A win is a win. They will probably play Penn State in the national title game. I still don't see Texas running the table just for the amount of tough games. Same goes for Alabama, but they aren't as good as Texas. -

QUOTE (zenryan @ Oct 18, 2008 -> 09:35 PM) sounds like an excuse. How is not showing up a good thing? How is that a viable excuse? Intensity is a major factor in football. A big part of coaching is getting the team to play hard every game. -

Haha I think my high school team could have lost by 35 in a half. Stopped every time and given up a TD every time. This is completely not real. Even for not showing up this is not real. Time to hear all the Texas is so, so good talk because they beat a Mizzou team that didn't show up. -

Fraud is harsh. Effort is essential to victory. They simply aren't putting their best effort right now. Looks like it's back to the days of it being Missouri football. f*** yeah! -

The Cowboys just got a gift call. Romo fumbled in the endzone and even turned away from the defender to bring the ball back in, but it was called a pass. Wow, brutal. -

That was a lot of fun to be at even if it is the worst I've seen Mizzou's offense play in at least 2 years. When OU manhandled them in the Big 12 title game it was because OU's defense owned them. Ok State's secondary was extremely impressive, but Mizzou made a lot of mistakes and shouldn't have lost that game. The defense gave up 28 points and forced 3 turnovers. Mizzou isn't supposed to lose games like that with their offense. Oh well, hopefully they can salvage the season against Texas next week. -

QUOTE (Shadows @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 03:41 PM) I N I Minnesota is still garbage, true story Illinois should have won that game easily and simply beat themselves.. you have a right to be excited and happy about them after what happened last year but they still aren't that good And neither is Illinois. Give it up. That was an embarrassing loss by a team that isn't as good as people thought. -

QUOTE (Texsox @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 02:21 PM) Gotta love the Cotton Bowl. Texas moving up a couple notches in the polls for certain. Unless Mizzou wins by 3+ scores I don't see how Texas isn't No. 1. Even if that happens, it should be close. -

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 12:33 PM) Iowa State should totally beat Baylor today. I disagree. I don't think Baylor is bad. Texas, wow. OU really hasn't looked that good in the 2nd half. I'm very surprised. And to Illinois and Michigan: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA -

This Texas game is already high scoring. I didn't see that coming. I like OU to win by quite a lot. I should not be awake yet, stupid 11am start time. -
QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 11:02 PM) Right now, I think the Bulls 3 best players are Thomas, Deng, and Noah (despite what he looks like and acts like). Noah is a 10-10 guy every night, it looks like Tyrus really did improve his jumper and he looks like a 14-8 guy, and Deng is Deng- he'll get his 17-7 every night. That's fine, but that's not a playoff team if that's true.
-
I'll be pleasantly surprised if this Bulls team makes the playoffs. I want to vomit at the site of that roster. Derrick Rose isn't a legit starter this season. Larry Hughes and Ben Gordon will be counted on to be the starting 2 guards. Tyrus Thomas or Joakim Noah will have to start. Ugh. They have a bunch of mediocre players. Someone is going to have to get a lot better. I know the East isn't that great, but I don't see the Bulls being that good.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 09:35 AM) Yes. He is the second most talented player on the OSU team. And I dont know why that makes them bad, he was head and shoulders the most talented high school team in the nation last year. And both Beanie and Pryor were AA game mvp's. There is a massive difference between talent and current ability. I'm not denying he has talent. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 1, 2008 -> 09:57 AM) And maybe we wouldnt win, but we would still like another shot with our best two players starting. Pryor is the second best player on that team? Really? I think once he has to pass against decent teams, his numbers will be pedestrian. I'm not saying he can't be great, but he isn't yet. If he's the 2nd best player that team has, then that's why Ohio State isn't that good this year. Also, for the USC/Kansas basketball comparison...USC has been a top 5 postseason team almost every year lately and they are either in the title game or winning their New Year's bowl game. Kansas has a national title and a runner-up finish in recent years, but they haven't been anywhere near as consistent as USC football.
