  1. Pollok gave up an 8th inning HR resulting in a 3-2 loss for the Barons. Sweeney had 2 extra base hits. Young had a double, a walk, a strikeout, and a stolen base haha. Box Score Whisler had 7 nice innings of work today in a 3-1 Hogs win. Hinton had a double, HR, and 2 runs. Valido 3 hits in his return. Box Score
  2. Charlotte and Kanny are off today.
  3. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ May 29, 2005 -> 02:06 AM) I'm sorry Dan but I'm not sure what you mean. Punch has the 1st pick of the draft, then again its 2 AM in the morning and maybe I'm just missing something here. He wanted to get another pick and wanted it to be random. He got the 1st pick. What is so hard about this that no one understands what is going on?
  4. Alright, here's the update. We have 11 teams still open. DBAH0 has the White Sox since he picked them first. If you wanted a random selection you have a team and it is denoted by (random) so in case someone wants to select that spot they can bump the randomly selected user. This way the most people can be happy with who they have. Also, I decided to allow doubles now, but again they can be bumped as well to allow more users if necessary. Finally, the 1st pick has been randomly taken by Punch and Judy Garland.
  5. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ May 28, 2005 -> 06:52 PM) I'll take the Royals, BTW when do you expect this to go down, because with school, I won't be available always (basically during the day) to make the draft go super quick. We'll probably have this sometime during midweek, but the first round will probably take place over a couple days so don't worry about not being home because of school. If we get in a bind timewise I'll have people PM their top choices in order when their pick is close so I can auto pick for them sometime. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ May 28, 2005 -> 06:58 PM) Is it going to be just a 1st round mock? I'll take the Brewers by the way, if I'm somehow late for my picks, anyone can feel free to remind me via pm or email. It's just the first round.
  6. Alright, I started randomly selecting people who said they didn't care to teams. I'll keep editing the first post to update which teams are taken/available. I'll start allowing people to take 2 teams late on Sunday so more people have a chance to play.
  7. QUOTE(farmteam @ May 28, 2005 -> 04:48 PM) I'll do it. Also, if we get a assigned a team like the Red Sox or Marlins who have two picks in the first round, do we pick for both picks, or just one of them? If we do pick both picks, I'd like to have the Marlins or Red Sox. If not, it doesn't really matter. Both picks.
  8. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ May 28, 2005 -> 03:18 PM) Can I take the A's or am I not qualified? We're going to need people so I'm not going to say no to anyone. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ May 28, 2005 -> 03:19 PM) We may not get 26, but we can probably get most of the way there. Since it is just one round, it could even be at a slower pace like the course of one night as opposed to in just onehour or something. How do you feel about random team assignments? Would that be better than calling dibs? Curious what you think Yeah, I kind of figured it would take a few days since we have about a week and a half until the draft. I would assume people would like to be able to pick their team, but I don't really care. It's up to whoever signs up, we could just take a vote.
  9. The idea of the community mock draft as was thrown around in the other thread got me thinking that maybe we should do something like that here. I'm hoping we have enough people to sign up for all the teams, but likely people will need to double up. I figure we can bang this out in a few days once we get it rolling as long as people pay attention to it because we can just post the selections and then move on to the next pick. Here is the first round order (edited with who has taken certain teams): 1. Diamondbacks- Punch and Judy Garland (random) 2. Royals- maggsmaggs 3. Mariners- Soxheads 4. Nationals- Cerbaho-WG 5. Brewers- Palehosefan 6. Blue Jays- Fotop 7. Rockies- thomsonmi 8. Devil Rays- aboz56 9. Mets- Punch and Judy Garland 10. Tigers- Rowand44 (random) 11. Pirates- CWSGuy406 12. Reds- He Gawn (random) 13. Orioles- Chisoxrd5 14. Indians- Cerbaho-WG 15. White Sox- DBAH0 16. Marlins- farmteam 17. Yankees (from Phillies)- JDsDirtySox 18. Padres- danman31 (random) 19. Rangers- JDsDirtySox 20. Cubs- thomsonmi 21. Athletics- WHarris1 22. Marlins (Giants)- farmteam 23. Red Sox (Angels)- thonsonmi 24. Astros- White Sox Josh 25. Twins- White Sox Josh 26. Red Sox (Dodgers)- thomsonmi 27. Braves- danman31 (random) 28. Cardinals (Red Sox)- dasox24 29. Marlins (from Yankees)- farmteam 30. Cardinals- dasox24 The Phillies, Giants, Angels, and Dodgers do not have first round picks so we have 26 teams to fill.
  10. I saw Miller wasn't on the listed Warthogs' roster on milb.com so I did some searching to see what happened. I found this press release on the Carolina League website.
  11. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ May 28, 2005 -> 02:32 PM) Let's do it Danman. We should have one on the board here where everyone picks a team. Immitation is flattery after all. Any ideas on how to get he ball rolling? I'd love to participate I'll start a new thread and hope we can get it going and finished by the time the draft starts.
  12. Any interest in a mock first round draft where everybody takes a player or 2 and picks a guy for each team?
  13. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 28, 2005 -> 08:22 AM) Personally I don't think they'll rebuild. They've got too big of a payroll to start playing all of their young players. They have some good minor leaguers that are going to need playing time soon if they plan on ever winning again.
  14. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ May 28, 2005 -> 03:37 AM) Holy s***! I had no idea. That's really sad to hear. Maybe he should take some time off? He probably wants to play to get away from it and get a distraction. When baseball is only a distraction he isn't going to do as well. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't. If it were up to me I'd leave it up to Josh.
  15. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ May 28, 2005 -> 02:09 AM) I still fantasize about the day a hyped up White Sox pitching prospect comes up and contributes right away. He was struggling in AAA. Nobody was calling for him to be up. It was a matter of necessity and no better reserve options. His first start was solid though.
  16. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 27, 2005 -> 11:56 PM) I think Carillo has got Kris Honel written all over him, so I don't want to Sox to make that pick there. I think you are making this comparison because of the fact that Carillo is a local kid like Honel and both are pretty thin guys. Some think the Sox drafted Honel a bit higher because he was a local product, which could again be a factor with Carillo. Honel has had injuries for whatever reason and that is where the thin part plays a factor. I'm not sure I completely agree with that, but I think that's what DBAH0 is getting at. I haven't read all the scouting reports and info on the draft prospects yet, but from what I have seen I seem to like Bogusevic and Tulowitzki the most and I'm not sure either will be there for us. I'd love to take a chance of Townsend. He's become more risky with a year off, but I think it would be worth it. Carrillo looks like a safety pick that I wouldn't mind, but I like the others better. We should try something like this here. Have our draft experts pick a team or probably multiple teams because I don't think we have 30 people that would be interested and knowledgable enough for this. Then they just pick the best player on the board with a little to do with how teams spend money and other factors that teams may go after.
  17. QUOTE(JimH @ May 27, 2005 -> 10:07 PM) Can't get the boxes, there is an error on minorleaguebaseball.com . For the record, I had an error last night as the boxes wouldn't link off of the team page, but if you went to league scores and clicked through there it worked for some reason. Maybe that was the case for you. By the time I got on they were working fine. I don't know about you guys, but I'm beginning to think that Tracey has potential to be a workhorse reliever. His control makes me think that he couldn't make it as a starter. If he comes in to be a Marte type guy, who just logs a ton of innings, with his supposed rubber arm and sheer will to pitch, he might be able to have more success like that. He's got a plus fastball that would be nice out of the pen. He seems like one of those guys that the McDowell was talking about during the game yesterday. The type of guy that has great stuff and if he walks the guy no big deal because he's not going to give the hitter anything to hit with that stuff. Maybe this is me just rambling on, but I'm doubting Tracey can make it as a starter with his control issues. As we've seen, young pitchers' control problems get magnified when they come to the Majors. Tracey's rubber arm, will to pitch, and stuff have to be utilized somehow and workhorse relievers are very valuable throughout the course of a long season.

    Star Wars

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ May 27, 2005 -> 02:31 PM) ***SPOILERS*** Also, Palpatine's darkness shows up almost immediately in the movie. When Anakin has Dooku trapped, instead of capturing him, Palpatine DEMANDS him to kill Dooku. It pretty much gave away thae fact that Palpatine was actually a bad-guy. If you had been paying attention you could tell from Episode 1 that something was off with him. Plus his voice was very similar to Sidious' throughout all 6 Star Wars movies.
  21. 2001 Draft: A Review The 2001 draft appears to have gone much better than the 2000 draft. The White Sox selected RHP Kris Honel in the 1st round as well as RHP Wyatt Allen (supplemental 1st round for the loss of Charles Johnson). While those picks didn’t fare all that well, the Sox have gotten a lot of value out of some of their latter picks. First let’s talk about Kris Honel. The right hander was a local product out of Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, Illinois. The confident righty was advertised with a low to mid 90’s fastball and a nasty knucklecurve. Honel signed relatively quickly and pitched fantastic during his first three years in the system, never once posting an ERA above 3.11 (except for two outings he made in Birmingham at the end of 2003 where he had a 3.75 ERA). Honel was pretty much as advertised. He didn’t have the fastball many publications reported, but it was good enough when mixed with his knuckle curve and good command and he was the best rated starting pitcher in the organization and set to pitch in Birmingham in 2004. The Kris Honel from 2004 and beyond has been a totally different pitcher. He suffered from a mysterious injury and saw his velocity slip into the low 80’s. Along with that his command went south and he ended up pitching in just 4 games last year. The question was would Honel return to form? Thus far the easy answer is no, although one positive sign has been a slight improvement in his velocity, which now finds itself in the mid 80’s. Honel just came back off the disabled list and the organization has been tight lipped on what has been ailing him. He has struggled mightily with his command this year having walked 15 batters in 21.2 innings (4 starts). It’s my belief that Honel is no longer considered a top prospect and won’t be until he can once again pitch at his previous level, which now seems like so long ago. What makes it even worse is what happened to 2nd round pick Ryan Wing. Wing, along with Honel had dominated the low-minors together and helped lead Winston Salem to the Carolina League title in 2003. Wing missed all of 2003 after undergoing surgery and was than picked up by the Rangers when the Sox tried to sneak him off the 40 man roster. At the end of 2003 the two looked like sure fire bets to make the majors. Even now Wing still appears to have a good chance, but it won’t be with the Sox. Wing is 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA in 4 games (3 starts) with the Bakersfield Blaze (High A Ball) and has limited opponents to just 10 hits in 19 innings. The loss of Wing was a major hit to the 2001 draft and was a mistake by the organization in my book. Late Round Jewels While the top picks in the 2001 draft aren’t likely to contribute with the White Sox, the Sox were able to get help from the latter rounds. Fifth round pick Andy Gonzalez is a tremendous defensive shortstop who has struggled with the bat. However, this year he’s made great strides for the Barons batting .274 with a .347 OBP and 21 RBI. Better yet, 16th round selection Chris Young has found his way onto the FutureSox top 10 and has a very high ceiling. The power hitting outfielder plays tremendous defense and tends to draw walks. He has garnered comparisons to former White Sox CF Mike Cameron and has played well for the Birmingham Barons (especially considering he skipped High A) batting .241 with 8 HR and 21 RBI but most impressively 24 extra base hits. The Sox also drafted Tom Collaro in the 27th round and the outfielder hit 18 HR’s in 2004 with Great Falls and already has 13 this year at Winston Salem. Collaro was a draft and follow signing the following year after playing a season at junior college. The White Sox also drafted a reliable group of starters/relievers who all have at least some shot of making the majors. LHP Jim Bullard (9th Round), RHP Brian Miller (20th Round), RHP Josh Fields (23rd Round), RHP Charles Haeger (25th Round), LHP Nik Lubisich (31st Round) have all had some sort of success. Josh Fields has made the most strides of the group and has pitched well for the Charlotte Knights while Bullard has excelled as both a starter and reliever throughout the minors and is currently on the disabled list for the Barons. Charles Haeger has pitched outstanding as a starter for the Winston Salem Warthogs while Nik Lubisich has pitched well for the Barons. While none appear to be stars in the making, all have at least a shot at making the major leagues. Helped via Trade The Chicago White Sox also drafted a few players that won’t reach the majors with their respected clubs, but did help the Sox acquire talent for the stretch runs the past few years. 15th round pick Anthony Webster was the most talented of the group and ranked in the top 10 at the time he was dealt to Texas as one of the key players of the first Carl Everett trade. LHP Tim Bittner (10th Round) was part of a deal that helped bolster the White Sox bullpen when they acquired LHP Scott Schoenweis. The Ones that Got Away The Sox drafted two highly ranked prospects that they weren’t able to sign. In the 3rd round of the 2001 draft they chose catcher Jonathan Zeringue. Zeringue opted to attend LSU instead and was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2004 draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks and is already in AA. The Sox also selected LHP Zack Jackson in the 50th round and Jackson attended Louisville instead and was a 1st round selection by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2004. Overall the 2001 draft wasn’t amazing; however, it was light-years better than the 2000 draft. If Honel and Wing didn’t get injured, and injuries do play a large factor in the success/failure of a draft class, then you’d be talking about a very good draft. However, as of now this draft will hinge on Chris Young, who is the most likely player of the bunch to make an impact with the Sox.
  22. QUOTE(whitesoxin' @ May 26, 2005 -> 04:14 PM) Yeah, they're the FYI players. And yeah, Rob Hummel is his name. They played the Illinois Wolves (he said it was Wolves, but is it Warriors?) in Houston and beat up on them pretty good. I guess Sheyer only had about 8 points that game. There are two different teams. Illinois Wolves and Illinois Warriors. Scheyer is on the Warriors.
  23. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 25, 2005 -> 09:23 PM) Especially with him playing in the offensive deadzone that is Seattle. Dodger Stadium isn't much better.
  24. Indy 3, Charlotte 1. Frank 0-4, K. Gload 1-3, BB, K. Anderson 1-4, run, 2 K. Box Score Kanny 7, Savannah 6. Double and triple for Berry with a run. 2 jacks for Cook. Gio with a pretty good start: 7 IP, 3 R, 9 K, 2 BB, 6 hits. He gave up 2 HRs that accounted for all the runs he surrendered. Box Score Cook is batting .458 with 2 doubles, 6 HR, 9 RBI, 7 runs, 7 BB, and 6 K in his last 6 games.
  25. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ May 25, 2005 -> 08:51 PM) Young with 2 more XBH to add to his collection. ROFL-2 more K's as well I know, I LOVE IT! It's fun as hell to watch a guy produce with a poor average and high strikeout numbers while having speed and maintaining a decent walk rate. With that said he is a risky prospect with all those K's and lack of contact.
