  1. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 06:50 PM) For your next addition I'd like you to tell us why you have Christian Marrero as a future top-10 prospect for us. Not that I'm disagreeing with you as you see the kid and I don't, but I'm wondering because he hasn't really been on my radar as a starting position player prospect. His numbers show that he's got pop and makes enough contact, but he's only walked 29 times this year after walking almost twice as often the year before. He's 18-for-29 in career SB so it appears he's not Konerko slow. Does he have Dye-like speed or something? Tell us (or just me) everything you know about this kid because there's not a ton out there. I believe I've read about his strong arm. How's his defense? What kind of baserunner is he? Also his splits this season suggest he doesn't fair too well against lefties. He's hitting .275 off them with a .490 SLG, but he has an astounding 16 K in 51 AB with the Barons. Against RHP he has just 32 K in 174 AB. Sounds like a plan.
  2. I love seeing my "kids" graduate to the majors.
  3. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 11:02 PM) Yes they did JPN, but they didn't get a hit. And that's what they call a productive out. Good hitters do that.
  4. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 07:32 PM) And Eugencio Fulginco or something or other. Exactly the same type of situation last year with Oney. Except then people just used it as another reason to b****. Jose Fulgencio.
  5. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 09:50 PM) Looks like the big show for Huddy.. Of all the guys who got promoted to fill space, M. Gonzalez (the 18 yr old catcher) is the only one to get a hit. He went 1-3 Nice outings for Holmberg and Heindenrich as well. Shoemaker and Gerst got RBI's.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 05:27 PM) What the heck is a baseball world cup? Also, Ehren Wassermann is from Alabama. Did they secede and become another country? Negron (Puerto Rico), Wassermann, Kroeger, Harrell (USA) and Armstrong (Canada).
  7. With Getz, Wise, Flowers, Fields & Torres going up to Chicago and Kroeger, Negron, Armstrong, Wassermann & Harrell joining their respective Baseball World Cup teams, Charlotte needed players to fill out their roster. With Bristol's season ending today, Charlotte received Brent DeFoor, Miguel Gonzalez, Jose Fulgencio and Brady Shoemaker from Bristol. They also received Lee Fischer from Kannapolis, Kent Gerst and Ryan Rote from Winston-Salem as well as adding Brandon Hynick. Justin Fuller was assigned to Winston-Salem, but is not active yet. The Barons received pitcher Jacob Marceaux as a free agent. He was a former first round pick of the Marlins and had not pitched in affiliate ball this year, nor in the indy leagues as far as I know. I doubt he'll be eligible for the postseason. Gerst and Rote should be returning to Winston-Salem for the playoffs after Charlotte's season ends next Monday, as well as Fischer likely returning to Kannapolis for their playoffs. As all three are eligible to play in the playoffs for the Dash and the Intimidators.
  8. Both guys will probably be headed to Charlotte to fill out their roster for the remainder of the season with rosters expanding. They won't be able to join any of the playoff teams.
  9. Now the Dodgers have two DH's. Anyway, Brandon Hynick pitched at Birmingham Southern, awesome. Justin Fuller was being managed by former Barons manager Carlos Subero.
  10. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 08:25 PM) God, Santeliz has no control at all. He got the save in the 1st game 15 pitches, 9 strikes and 6 balls. Effectively wild, like I said.
  11. Is there room on the 40 man roster? Cole Armstrong is going to play for Canada in the Baseball World Cup, so that's probably why Flowers is going up. Congrats to my boy, T-Flow.
  12. QUOTE (daa84 @ Aug 30, 2009 -> 08:09 PM) so did hudson get skipped? He who comes will pitch tomorrow.
  13. It only rains in Birmingham when the Barons are at home. Tomorrow's double header will be the third one in the last two home stands.
  14. Here's what happened last night...The Barons scored 5 runs while only getting 1 hit in the fifth inning, Dayan Viciedo almost killed me with a foul ball, it had some wicked english on it, a Huntsville batter fouled off a ball and broke his bat at the handle at the same time, the broken part of the bat flew up into GA but didn't hurt anybody, the crazy stalker lady who follows the players around and stalks their wives and girlfriends while claiming to be the official photographer of the Barons got hit by a foul ball, I had to tell off this mean b**** who doesn't own her own seats to stop being a c*** to little kids who were just doing a little league chant, Clevelan Santeliz charged out of the dugout at the home plate umpire after the top of the ninth because he was mad about the Huntsville runner leaving third early on a sac fly, David Cook walked us off with a two out run scoring single in the bottom of the ninth. I also found out second hand that a friend of mine had been unfaithful to his wife. That's three hours at Regions Park on a Saturday night.
  15. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Aug 29, 2009 -> 07:15 PM) Edit: BTW Allen has 21 HR between AA/AAA/MLB while Carter has 24 between AA/AAA in 80 more PA. I guess that means he doesn't have power... BTW did anyone watch his first MLB home run? How he took an outside fastball about 2-3" off the plate and pulled it with little effort about 435 feet into RCF in San Francisco? Man, just call this guy Ryan Sweeney, he must have no pop whatsoever. That's the kind of skill and power he has.
  16. I'm assuming I saw Allen play the most of anyone on Soxtalk. I never like seeing prospects traded away, but in this case, it was a bad, bad deal. It is going to backfire on the White Sox. I didn't like seeing Chris Young traded, but I knew his attitude and work ethic wasn't great and that might cost him in the long run. Brandon Allen's upside is unknown, and that may hurt the White Sox in the future. Don't forget about Chris Carter either. If KW can turn Pena around for a better prospect than Allen, then it will balance it all out just like trading Young for Vazquez, then Vazquez for Flowers. But I doubt Pena will ever fetch a better player than Allen.

    What is your job?

Broadcasting for almost a decade. I currently work in the Technical Operations Center for the EWTN television network, which is based here in Birmingham. I monitor all 8 of the feeds that eminate from the station, as well as the playlists, audio/video quality and ingesting and recording programs to the video server. The network broadcasts to Europe, UK, Pac Rim, Africa/India, Domestically in English and Spanish, Internationally in Spanish and in Canada. It's the channel you always pass by and never watch. Take my advice, don't watch it. The best part about my job is that I work a 4 on, 4 off schedule. Which allows me plenty of free time for my hobbies. I would recommend to all of you who may be seeking a career in broadcasting to think twice. It is certainly not a career that necessitates a college degree at all. I took advantage of an internship on a local AM station and turned it into a paying job. I was the on-air producer for an afternoon drive talk show...at age 19. I also engineered the Barons broadcasts when they were on that station. People spend years in college and in the business to achieve what I did right out of the gate. Being 19, I foolishly left that job and moved to Utah. I'll spare you the details, but what does a 19 year old male think with? Anyway, I worked for Simmons Media in Salt Lake City for 2 1/2 years, doing everything I could including a stint as a DJ on their modern rock station KXRK, X96. Funny thing is that one of my bosses at Simmons is now a PD at a station here in B'ham. I moved back home and took the job I have now, which I've worked at for almost 7 years. Like I said, if you're thinking of broadcasting as a career, don't. It's all about the bottom line, and there is plenty of technology that renders having human employees obsolete. You won't make any money and you'll regret it if you go to school for it.

    Films Thread

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 29, 2009 -> 08:27 AM) The men who stare at goats Im thinking this is going to be a must see for me That one might get a more pithy title before it's released.

    Films Thread

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 29, 2009 -> 12:25 AM) I've never been as motivated by this thread to see a film as I now am to see Basterds. I like 90% of Quentin's films as it is, but between some of the early reviews and my general preconception that Nazis are not necessarily the humor well I was half-expecting ths one to miss the mark. I'm glad to see a number of posters here give this one high marks and put it back in my sights. "Hans Landa" is a barrel of monkeys.
  20. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 09:06 PM) Johnnie Lowe is making a habit of getting destroyed. The Barons are stuck with him too. He can't be replaced on the roster because B'ham had to have their playoff roster set by last week. They moved Sergio Santos up to Charlotte and Justin Cassel said himself that he's been shut down for the year. The Barons will have 10 pitchers for the playoffs, including Lowe.
  21. QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 08:59 PM) Viciedo to 1st, Marrero to RF tonight. Here we go..... Marrero is usually the right fielder. Viciedo did fine. The most common lineup for the Barons is Price/Ricks at 2, Gallagher at 3, Retherford at 4, Hudson at 6, Viciedo at 5, Cook/Shelby at 7, Danks/Shelby at 8, Marrero at 9 and a rotation at DH.
  22. It looks like a giant dumpster.
  23. QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 08:34 PM) Escobar is still young so he can still be a pretty damn good prospect. It will be interesting to see where he starts next year. He already spent some time in Kanny last year so repeating again would be really slowing his progress. He'll only be 21 at the start of next season. So, Winston-Salem isn't out of the question and would probably be best.
  24. Knights vs. G-Braves B'ham off Dash vs. Salem Brent Morel out with a sore wrist per Ed Collari I's vs. The Drive Voyagers vs. Osprey BriSox vs. Pulaski
