QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Aug 16, 2009 -> 12:47 PM) Maybe he will hold his own and we will have our own 18 year old in AA. But seriously, that's quite a jump for him, even temporarily. But maybe he will pick something up from some coaches or players in his short time there that can help him. I wouldn't be surprised if Price is rejoining the team back in B'ham tomorrow and Gonzalez goes back to Bristol. Ricks is playing again today.

Charlotte going nowhere Playoffs soon for Birmingham Please send us some Flowers

Freddy Garcia soon to return A roster decision looms, Kenny For the love, demote Wise

Miguel Gonzalez was moved to the Barons roster today. Donny Lucy was put on the DL. Jared Price is still on the temporary inactive list, which left only Adam Ricks available to catch. Gonzalez should only be there as a temporary emergency option until Price returns from whatever is keeping him away. The Barons are in Zebulon, NC, which is not far from Bristol, TN/VA. The Barons have to have their playoff roster set by Tuesday. If they needed a long term option at catcher with the absence of Lucy and Price, Gonzalez wouldn't have been promoted. He's there for the short term.

FYI, Hudson's next start, if he remains with Charlotte, will also be on MiLB.tv next week. He should pitch again on the 19th against Durham.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Aug 14, 2009 -> 08:15 PM) This 2nd announcer in the booth is f***ing terrible. Edit: talking about the Knights here. They're both bad, plus the main guy is a complete jerk. I've e-mailed him before, I wouldn't recommend it.

QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 14, 2009 -> 08:12 PM) Freddy will pitch Tuesday either way. Hudson would be replacing Contreras on Wednesday. 1-2-3 7th inning for Hudson. Still under 100 pitches. See, no need to worry about his first start. Just nerves and bleeders and bloops that got him last Sunday. He is the real deal.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 14, 2009 -> 07:40 PM) I saw that too - recap says Lucy reached on a base hit to the third baseman, then was PR'd for by Ricks. Man, ever since that May 2008 injury, things have just gone really badly for Donny. And it seemed back then, at the time of the injury, like he was doing well in AAA and ready to take over as the backup C. Thankfully Ricks has worked with a lot of the pitchers on the Barons. I don't know why Price is inactive, but B'ham will need him if Lucy's hurt for any significant time.

I wasn't listening, but it looks like Donny Lucy came out of the game after getting a hit. Not good, because Adam Ricks had to come in and Jared Price was put on the temporary inactive list for some reason the other day. Hopefully not bereavement, but usually the case.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 04:18 PM) Can he catch too? Yes, he can catch the ball at 1st, LF and RF. -
I'm still waiting to be referenced on MLB Trade Rumors too.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 03:53 PM) The timing of this really does suck. Lillibridge goes up, Cannizaro takes his spot in Charlotte I'm guessing.

QUOTE (son of a rude @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 03:32 PM) Wow, that's really nice to hear. JPN, what did you think about Flowers' defense when you saw him in AA? I think the results speak for themselves, but the only flaw I saw was his footwork. But, even that seemed to improve over time as he was gunning down baserunners. -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) Well that's pretty awesome. If Flowers can be even an average defensive catcher, with his bat, he is a real find. I had joked before that I wish we could combine Donny Lucy's defense and Tyler Flowers' offense into a single super-catcher, but this is getting close to that. Donny Lucy has actually been slipping defensively. -

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 02:58 PM) If he's platooning with AJ, where would Flowers play against righties? 1B? DH? I guess if we had PK, AJ, and Flowers split up the C, 1B, and DH spots we could get them all enough playing time, but I really think we're going to need a lefty DH. Maybe we can pick up a lefty RF to replace Thome's bat, but finding a good defensive lefty-hitting right fielder who can also get on base and hit for power is like finding Amelia Earhart in the bottom of the ocean. Christian Marrero. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 12:17 PM) I wonder if Getz is headed to the DL? Bench depth for Charlotte, they're carrying 14 pitchers including Peavy and 11 position players.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 09:59 AM) I think trader KW has something left for us in the offseason. You guys follow the minors and prospects a lot more closer than I do, but all this talk about Allen, Cunningham and Carter tearing it up for other teams in the minors brings a few questions up for me. 1) aren't they all doing it in the PCL which is notoriously famous for pumping hitting prospects up. Not related to Sox prospects at all, but Stone a few weeks backed talked about how, I believe, the Dodgers would always have guys, especially 1b or corner OF prospects over inflated because of the league and park they were playing in; and 2) maybe the White Sox are just good at finding that type of prospect. It sounds like Marero is a similar prospect to these guys (although older?), so maybe that's the White Sox scouts nitches? Who knows, all I know is KW hasn't been burned badly by a prospect leaving yet, and until I see these guys do it consistently on the MLB level I won't go to crazy. I think he will be burned by Brandon Allen and Chris Carter, if Quentin doesn't pan out over the long term. I think Cunningham will be good once he gets steady play in the majors. He does nothing but hit, and not just in the PCL. Look at his numbers from 2007 until now in the minors. Christian Marrero just recently turned 23.

QUOTE (Friend of Nordhagen @ Aug 12, 2009 -> 09:41 PM) Can Marerro actually play first base decently? Yes, and RF and LF.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Aug 12, 2009 -> 02:29 PM) Another great write up, JPN. Good to hear Retherford has been doing well defensively at 2B. It is no surprise he's such a hard worker given how far he's come since going undrafted. JPN, for your next edition, could you talk about our relief prospects? I think you've said before that Mabee is a guy with an impressive fastball. Could you talk a bit about him, Santeliz, Omogrosso, etc. and whoever else you see as a power arm relief prospect? Sounds like a good idea.

QUOTE (BamaDoc @ Aug 12, 2009 -> 08:54 AM) Great to meet you in Birmingham. Nice article on CJ. He looks thick for a secondbaseman, like a Glen Hubbard. Not saying fat just thick. Seemed to move decent. Did I notice some kind of knee brace on the left? I don't know if he wears a brace, but I do know he has a club foot.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 12, 2009 -> 12:02 PM) I assumed he would be in the OF. Nope, he's a first basemen now. And a good one too.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 12, 2009 -> 10:37 AM) Now that I go back and take a closer look at Schnur's numbers, I take it back. Loman's numbers, while similar in K and BB ratios, are far better in core results. I'd have to assume that Loman will be the 1B in AA next year, assuming he doesn't leave the organization. Castillo isn't going to double-promote. I'll be interested to see what Loman can do there. With good numbers there, he'd be 24 at AA and only maybe a year older than typical for the level... you'd have to start thinking about him. Does anyone have a clue as to his defense at 1B? I'd imagine Jimmy Gallagher will start next year with B'ham.
-
I wouldn't say Loman is old for A ball, he is still only 23. Seems like the Angels gave up on him a little too quickly. In regards to Schnurstein, I could tell by his demeanor last year and from what I'd heard from BamaJason who had talked to him, that his heart wasn't into baseball anymore. He chose not to accept a demotion last summer. I think Brandon Short of Kanny should get some love. He's averaging a RBI every other game.
