QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Mar 26, 2010 -> 09:47 AM) And that's another reason why I hate capitalism. It's all about the short term. As opposed to what? Curious. In their pure forms, I don't think any economic system is sustainable for more than a couple of decades/economic cycles but I fail to see how there is anything better than "capitalism" as we understand it.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 26, 2010 -> 08:47 AM) I'd pretty much agree with that. They just had so much of their own misery in the 90's and early 2000's that they couldn't stay focused on the evil U.S. Now they have a growing economy, and can actually pay to keep up their military. Growing economy? Russia's economy sucks and is headed for decline in the near/mid-future. America is in decline, relative to China, India, and Brazil, but compared to Europe and Russia we are in much better shape. Also I think you and Y2HH earlier were oversimplifying Russia. Russian leadership (specifically Putin) wants a "strong Russia" but not necessarily confrontation with the United States. No, they don't really trust us, but why would they? It's not like we trust them either. To us, or at least some of us, Russia getting stronger does look confrontational or threatening, but it's not like Putin literally wants the Soviet Union back, in fact he has that famous quote "he who does not miss the Soviet Union has no heart, he who wants it back has no brain." What this means for us is that Russia is a strategic competitor just like any other country in the world, and it's just basic international relations where countries get a leg up on each other. It means we have to figure out how to work with around Russia, be wary of them, and sometimes look around their waist to see if they're holding a knife behind their back, but it's not like we need to be expecting war to break out just because Russia is strong and influential again. What benefit is there to them to provoke a direct military confrontation? It'd hurt them just as much as us, physically and strategically.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Mar 26, 2010 -> 10:04 AM) “I said I had very serious concerns that Barack Obama had anti-American views. And now I look like Nostradamus," - Michele Bachmann She also said, in so many words, the economy was 100% private before Obama took office and now it's 51% government. It seems like hardly anything she says is anything other than incoherent garbling.

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 26, 2010 -> 02:11 PM) to bigsqwert this was a comment on yglesias' blog that I laughed out loud at: mark f Says: March 26th, 2010 at 12:37 pm One time a guy on his cell phone rear-ended Eric Cantor at a stop sign, so really both sides are doing it. I f***ing lol'd

I think I recall reading argument that Pods's horrible baserunning last year wasn't hurting the team and I was thinking "wtf are you talking about?"

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 10:33 PM) I know what our left thinks of this bill, it's just the timing of your statement was just perfect as the WSJ has an article about Castro's reaction to it. me = pwned

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 10:17 PM) They both cheered the health care bill. Oh I didn't know that but like I said, depends, they were probably talking about the big gap in coverage being filled weren't they (since that's what a socialist would care about usually)? I have a socialist ex-conservative friend of mine who was complaining about this bill not doing enough etc. and there was a statement by the Socialist Party USA basically railing against it. http://socialistparty-usa.org/campaigns/healthcare.html Socialists (and a good chunk of the American left) pretty much want to get rid of insurance companies entirely. edit: I just looked and Castro was basically talking s*** about how it took so long and Cuba did it decades ago. lol, typical, but he kind of has a point in that most other countries resolved this argument 50-100 years ago
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 10:15 PM) Do Castro and Chavez count? Depends. Foreign policy or domestic front? Actually either way they think he's phony because he's still the US president
-
If anyone asked an actual socialist (i.e. Socialist Party USA) about Obama or the Democrats they wouldn't exactly give glowing reviews. And they hate this healthcare bill.

Sorta off-topic but BS, did you see on my Facebook status a few days ago where my friend Courtney commented a couple spots after you and said something to the effect "that guy above me could get it" lol

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 23, 2010 -> 06:27 PM) New overtime rules passed for the playoffs. Touchdown is the only way it can be won on the first possession. If there is a field goal, the other team gets a possession to try and tie it up or win it. I like it enough, though I still think that you need to shut the other team down from scoring period if you get a chance...just always been my thought. If they approve the same set of rules for the regular season in May, they need to consider doing away with ties all together and then go until someone wins. I always thought the old rules were cheesy as hell. Patriots' OT wins, etc. It's like it's completely based on luck.

I live in a townhouse, I have a small garden but not enough to reliably grow weed year-round. I guess I could if I wanted to but even still, if it's January I'm gonna need to go to Walgreen's and pick up a pack of joints -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 02:19 PM) Well, he DID bat this guy in the DH spot for 135 games in 2005: vs RHP .246 .317 .441 .757 vs LHP .265 .295 .419 .714 Well, the original DH got lost for the season early on, so it wasn't like he knowingly did that to start the season edit: s*** I just noticed witesoxfan already said this

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 07:07 PM) lol where you get that information from? It was in the Richmond PD's statement (I don't have a link, bmags showed it to me earlier) where they said the bullet came thru the window in a downward direction, but didn't have enough force/velocity to damage the blinds.

I have to catch up on these threads when I get home from work and I saw Godwin's law invoked a couple of times, so since we're on that, there is this ranting moron mouth-breather at my job, he is like a far, far loony right-wing type. Anyway he was going on an unsolicited rant about healthcare and socialism and s*** (really annoying btw, I don't want to hear that at work) and said "now I know how the Jews felt in the 1930s" or some dumb s***. Leaving aside the fact that the Jews in the 1930s could've never gotten away with saying anything like that... umm... what? So he's saying he knows what Zyklon B smells like? He's saying he was locked in a heated oven? WTF?

QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 01:50 PM) House Minority Whip Eric Cantor directly blamed top Democrats for “fanning the flames” regarding threats to members of Congress – and says his own office in Richmond was shot at earlier this week. Cantor, a Virginia Republican, said the heads of the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee are using allegations of harassment and threats to Democrats nationwide for political purposes. Cantor said he doesn’t release information about the incidents of his own threats to the media because it will only ratchet up violence. But he did say a bullet shot through the window in his campaign office in Richmond Monday evening, and he has received threats because he is Jewish. Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0310/...l#ixzz0jDBoLl5O Wow.... so a congressman gets death threats, spit on, gas lines cut, etc... and the response is... "you're using that for political purposes." This is like the husband asking his wife why she makes him beat her.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 01:06 PM) http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/03/25...shot-overnight/ Gun shots have been fire at Republican Rep. Eric Cantor's office. Not only that, anti-semitic death threats are have been received at Cantors office from rabid Dem supporters. The Dems seem to be encouraging this behavior. Cantor basically completely made this up. The bullet did hit his window but it was a random stray bullet that could've been fired from several hundred yards away and just happened to come down there and odds are probably like 99% the person that fired off the round didn't even know that was one of Cantor's offices or that it was even there. Then for fun he said "because I'm Jewish" as if the bullet had a note on it and tried to draw a weak equivalency. edit: yeah basically what bmags posted.

Only Balta does that, really, and yalls arguments with him end up spinning in circles.

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Mar 24, 2010 -> 09:43 AM) He didnt name any specific person in his post so there was no personal attack in this instance and you all are making it a bigger deal than it needs to be. Dude just smile and nod.

The pettiness is just getting comical now.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Mar 24, 2010 -> 07:12 PM) LMAO. You have no clue. Kap, can you not do this, and at least try? I know you CAN actually have a back and forth if you want, you were just doing it last night, otherwise it's really obnoxious and doesn't add anything.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 24, 2010 -> 11:48 AM) Soc Sec is fine, and will be for quite some time. Those fears are overblown. A couple of well-intentioned senators could probably come up with a fix for Social Security in a couple of hours if they wanted to.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Mar 24, 2010 -> 11:07 AM) Yeah then we could start paying more for a service that has actually decreased in price since it came to the market. Free markets do not work though. Huh? I'm not sure what this has to do with what I wrote (saying I wish my insurance covered Lasik)

I don't know where this puts me in relation to others on this board, but hate speech laws are kind of dumb. Why would you give the government authority to make a subjective decision to criminalize political views they don't like? What happens when someone new is elected and YOUR views become hate speech? Oh, btw StrangeSox I think those are 2 different laws they were enforcing, the liberal politician didn't have anything to do with hate speech.
