Yeah actually the Bay of Pigs thing happened because of the Iran and Nicaragua overthrows. Everybody thought covert ops were the way to go in the 50s (Eisenhower was mostly a good president except for him falling for this) because they seemed to go smoothly at the time. They weren't. They just seemed to work for a few years until it was clear it was a mistake, after anybody who made those decisions could be held politically accountable. JFK inherited the Bay of Pigs debacle and it ended up blowing up in his face, so that calmed all that talk for a while.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Feb 15, 2010 -> 07:37 PM) Amendment to Tancredo "literacy test": List 20 things you don't like, which happened in US history. Must be major events. Can't list like "I got a parking ticket". 20 is a lot... lol 1. Slavery: BAD 2. Jim Crow: Bad 3. Killing the Indians: Bad 4. Women not being able to vote until 1920: Bad, but eh. Different culture 5. Civil War: Mixed reviews, effectively ended slavery, federal government grew in power, depends who you ask if that's a good thing 6. Vietnam: Amazed that there are still people that think this wasn't a big waste of time that got a bunch of people killed for what were some pretty s***ty reasons in hindsight 7. War of 1812: Kind of dumb and pointless 8. Failed Bay of Pigs invasion: Stupid, stupid, stupid 9. Reconstruction: Since it ended without finishing, bad 10. Overthrowing Iranian government in 1953: In hindsight, really bad idea 11. Neglecting Afghanistan after Soviet withdrawal: Bad 12. Federal Government gradually becoming bloated bloated bureaucracy with massive defense budget financed through debt that Washington is unable/unwilling to control: Bad That's the best I can do for now. I fail at being allowed to vote

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Feb 15, 2010 -> 03:47 PM) Yeah, I agree. My first reaction was like everyone else, f*** them. But I've been going to Phoenix/Tucson for several years now and the truth is no team brings in the fans like the Cubs do, not just from Chicago but all over the country. It's a pretty savvy move on their part to ask for it and I'm not so sure they don't deserve it. Honestly the Cubs do kind of have a point... but I'm sure they weren't so naive to think that when they asked the 14 other owners to basically build them a new stadium that they wouldn't get resistance.

God descended to Earth and commanded our Founding Fathers to give freedom all men with the immortal and flawless Constitution. However, today we are not doing God's bidding because the Constitution was never intended apply to women (it specifically says "men" because women belong only in the kitchen and the bedroom, people who believe otherwise are responsible for our cultural and moral decline) or blacks (they aren't people). It also reminds us that the Bible tells us to hate gays.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 15, 2010 -> 03:28 PM) I love Rachel Maddow. Her response on Tancredo's "literacy test" suggestion at the Tea Party Convention... I wish certain people would bother to learn all of American history and not just the rah-rah parts (We fought a war for independence and won! Lincoln freed the slaves! We saved the world from Nazis and several decades later also from Communism!) so they can see there's some not-so-good and sometimes just plain bad stuff in there, and that pointing this out doesn't make someone a bad person or that the fact that these things happen makes us all bad people. And a lot of it is relevant today... that's why it's taught... it's not some liberal conspiracy to smear America or some dumb s***.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 15, 2010 -> 11:00 AM) You'll love to see him join some lobbying group to make millions. Shows how much he truly cared about his constituents. How Palin-esque At least he's going to finish the term he got elected to serve.

QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 14, 2010 -> 09:07 PM) How can anyone take this seriously? A state is not going to leave the union. /shrug I don't know, you have to ask the 25% of Texans that would support it

Should a Sox fan WANT Mauer to stay in Minn?
lostfan replied to Princess Dye's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It helps a great deal that he plays C, but it doesn't matter because he's one of the best pure hitters in the game. Even if he was a 3B, or 1B, or whatever, bats like his are still extremely rare. -

lostfan replied to Princess Dye's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don't really like him being in our division but I like it when a team, regardless of who it is but especially if they're a small-market team, can draft an all-star or future HOFer and be able to keep him for most of his career. That doesn't happen often enough in MLB, IMO. -
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Feb 13, 2010 -> 11:53 PM) There's no logic in your argument. The "legal right to secede" as Texans like to claim is false under current law. Now, if Texas wants to break the laws of the United States, I guess they're free to do so. Next. I used to keep the link that Soxbadger posted that showed the Supreme Court ruling saying this to show people. The answer is usually "do you really think we would listen to the Supreme Court if it came to that" well yeah, but you can use that logic to justify breaking any law if you wanted I guess.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 13, 2010 -> 11:11 AM) I agree. There is nothing wrong with the concept of rotating DHs. What's wrong is having second-rate hitters rotating in that role. Granted, your DH might not be able to play defense, but does it kill you that much to have one guy who can hit and not play the field?
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 12, 2010 -> 08:54 PM) Unlesss Thome is going to sit all season, the Twins are also rotating DH's. Do they suck? If Thome is part of your DH rotation along with someone who kills LHP I doubt you have a lot of people complaining about that. That's different.

Gillibrand really isn't doing a bad job if you're a Democrat.

Like I said, Murtha was definitely not my favorite.

Dye says "crowded outfield" prolonged his slump

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 12, 2010 -> 05:44 PM) The White Sox really should sign JD when Damon doesn't work out. I'd feel comfortable with Dye as a DH... but... well, you know. -

lostfan replied to winninguglyin83's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Dye is frustrated because he thinks he is a RF in this market... had he gone in more open-minded to the idea of being a DH he'd probably have a job by now. -
Sonix, if youre reading this how far are you from Cooperstown?

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Feb 11, 2010 -> 05:31 PM) It just seems most of the time, women size you up fairly quickly, so you better make your intentions clear. I've just seen too many guys fritter away time on a woman who wants nothing but friendship from them. If you make yourself too available to them as a friend, you won't be seen as a potential mate. Being a woman's puppy dog usually keeps you in the friend zone. Of course, every relationship is different. As I said, I was being general. Maybe it's me, but it seems pointless to just be friends with a woman. It seems to go against our natural desires. You make friends with other guys because of common interests or common ground. You're initial reaction to a woman is physical attraction 10 times out of 10. I don't see how you go past that just to be friends. Now, if you start out undefined in your interaction, that's one thing. But, you are initially drawn to her because of attraction. For me, platonic relationships didn't interest me. I just think it's in a guy's best interest long term to avoid platonic relationships with woman. Especially if there is any inkling of attraction. I was just always a go getter with women. I've wasted my time doing this before. It's a lot harder to know that's what's going on when it's actually happening. Of course, like 5 years later and after she got married she tells me she did want to get together but that she thought she knew what she was doing back then and didn't. Oh well. Things like that are just going to happen I guess. I have a s***-ton of female friends though. I am like that guy in "I Love You, Man." I can't really explain why.

Apparently so. So I guess I'm not just bisexual, but I'm into beastiality, midgets, and cartoons

So last night I was pretty drunk and I guess I texted a friend that I f***ed Jiminy Cricket, I don't remember how that came up in conversation but I put it up on Facebook and forgot that I did that until someone commented on it just now.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 12, 2010 -> 03:08 AM) I forgot about Thome to the Twins. That is going to be so strange seeing him up there hacking for Minnie. No stranger than Indians felt... although I highly doubt Sox fans would boo Thome like Indians fans still do -
lol at the "National Security Force." That was basically an e-mail forward that picked up traction in lunatic circles. I had a friend forward that to me and I cursed him out and in nicer words told him that he was stupid and explained why. Basically that started when Obama gave an answer in a debate, or a town hall, something like that where he said we need to strengthen our "civilian national security force" (words used in that order) in response to a question about counterterrorism policy. Someone on the internet gave that phrase capital letters... voila! Now it looks official... National Security Force or Civilian National Security Force, and you can compare it to SS and the Hitler Youth! And now a lot of people think it's some real secret plan, the fact that it obviously would never get past Congress (just like these crazyassed gun confiscation measures they're talking about) notwithstanding. It's for this reason, among many others, that I can't bother with right-wing blogs and information sources. If I tried to come in the discussion and be level-headed and explain what's wrong with it I am one of the traitors that needs a bullet in my head.

I recently found a Five Guys near my house which is pretty awesome.

It just makes no sense that the filibuster is the way it is... I mean, the Senate is already an unequal body and it was designed that way on purpose, so there don't need to be any additional checks. There really is no reason a majority vote in the Senate shouldn't be good enough.
