Ok, I'll do that. Have you ever tried the powerline connections though? They work like a charm. I wish I had thought of this earlier when I was having so much trouble making Xbox Live get along with my router. Ugh that took like 3 hours to straighten out and I could've just plugged it in and not had to worry.

When I go to the settings page for "security mode" it says Disabled WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK) 128 bit WEP 64 bit WEP Authentication: WPA-PSK (using this) WPA2-PSK WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK Encryption technique: TKIP AES (using this) Which combination is the best? I'm using a 360 too and I'll have to go change the security settings.

Awesome. Thanks. I'm playing around with the security settings right now and I picked WPA/WPA2 AES. You could break the WEP but you kind of don't count though. You're a techie geek.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 24, 2009 -> 10:08 PM) Yes, it's all possible -- and you don't really need wires anymore, you can go completely wireless in a secure manner and it's fast/reliable. I have an 802.11n network set up in my home on the n/g frequency (2ghz+), if I were to go completely n, I could use the 5ghz band, which has more distance, but that's not feasible as certain items in my house do not know how to do wireless N still. I have OSX, XP, Vista, and an Xbox360 (and iPhones) on my wireless network, all capable of communicating with anything it was granted access too on the network. If you ever do go wireless, be sure to use wpa2/aes on wireless networks with a non-usual password like d$eAlD13Fd! and you won't have much to worry about security wise...anyway, what you're describing IS doable...as I have something similar set up, but it's all wireless. The hardware portion of this type of install is the easy part -- setting up shared drives with security and proper user rights (so people can't delete your stuff) is more involved, but even that's not terribly hard to do. With computers I never really went in knowing what I was doing, I just kinda wing it. This will probably be the same. I have a N router which has some decent range (and a WEP key, I'm not gonna be one of those people that gives away my internet bandwidth), but it's down in the basement and upstairs on the Xbox the reception is reliable, but weak. So for streaming video it skips and stutters a lot, and it's really unwatchable. Browsing my mp3 library is also really slow. The media center will be on the middle floor. The reception there would probably be strong enough to do basic things but I can't see it streaming 1080p without any trouble unless I wire it. Do you know how to rip DVDs? i.e., know a good program to help me make digital versions of all my stuff?

I'm not exactly a n00b when it comes to this stuff, I've had a router set up for years now, but I'm thinking of adding on stuff and I still am not really sure what the f*** I'm doing. Anyone else ever done this? This is what I want to do - I have obviously a desktop, a small laptop that I just have for my wife and to dick around with, and a second desktop (sitting in a semi-operable state). I'm thinking of getting a network storage kit, the kind that lets you put 4 SATA drives in it, and store my music collection and some movies there. The end goal is to be able to watch TV on the flat screen/stereo system I'm about to buy to put in my living room and I guess I need some kind of media extender for that. I'm already set upstairs in the flat screen in my room since I have a Xbox 360 up there. I also want to set up some sort of WAN to let my dad and my friends use my stuff. I'm just wondering, am I off base here? This is all possible right? Also, in the process of researching this I discovered powerline ethernet, something I didn't know existed until yesterday. So I use these things instead of trying to drill holes and hide wires in my house. They work like a charm.

Powell gave an entire list of reasons he thought Obama was a better candidate before actually coming out and saying it, and I would venture to guess an overwhelming majority of people that say it was about race couldn't name 3 of them without using Google.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 24, 2009 -> 11:13 AM) Which is what they were going to do all along. This is no surprise. It's still proven that the majority of the country doesn't want this, and they are going to shove it right down our throat. Wait what, a majority of Americans don't want to see healthcare reform? Were you taking a nap when Obama made half his campaign about wanting to reform healthcare and then he got elected in a landslide and his party got a supermajority? The opposition has gotten louder but believe it or not, people's minds haven't really changed all that much from when this started. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/...changing-minds/

His stats have taken a hard nosedive in the past 2 weeks. His OPS is down near .700, his average plummeted like 100 points, did he get hurt or something?

QUOTE (rangercal @ Aug 23, 2009 -> 01:26 PM) That was amazing. I have not seen a throw that long in the air in a while. Would not surprise me if Jay has the strongest arm in the NFL. It's either him or Jamarcus Russell. I mean, I know he sucked and all, but it really wasn't that long ago that Rex Grossman was still on the Bears. Yeah, Cutler's arm is stronger and obviously he and Grossman aren't in the same league overall, but it's not like Grossman had a noodle arm.

So my hard drive abruptly died. That is the PCs equivalent of having a heart attack. Quite possibly the most brutal experience to have to go through. I had a backup drive but something was wrong with the software and I didn't bother to fix it so it hasn't backed up in 8 months, so now I'm looking at my PC as it was on November 2008. Awesome.

That bolded part isn't unpopular at all. At least among people who matter.

There is already a thread on each of these topics, no need for a third one.

I read part of Marx's writings my junior year of high school. I don't remember all of it but I do remember that he talked a lot about workers, and how he believed all of a corporation's profits rightfully belonged to the workers. My biggest problem with this is the fact that the word "socialism" really has no meaning anymore. It's a wingnut's rallying cry, nothing more.
-
You oversimplified it about as far as you could possibly go though. Saying progressive taxation = Marxism is like saying that because I was in the military and so was Bush that I should be president. The guy who basically founded modern capitalism (Adam Smith) said the rich should pay higher taxes. Is he a Marxist too?

So far I hope VAfan keeps calling out Sox players since they always seem to do something positive after he does.

QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 08:00 PM) Please...please....please dont say anything on there about this. My facebook page is really watered down as Tex so kindly pointed out on my wall. Soxtalk is where I tell all my real thoughts and stories. My Facebook is no holds barred... lol

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 21, 2009 -> 03:57 PM) I figured it out - you transferred to the Air Force and don't want to admit it. I would totally admit that, I openly used to say "I f***ed up." Marines like to act bad ass too but they secretly wished they'd joined the Air Force.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 21, 2009 -> 03:54 PM) Easier to track when the information could only come from one source than from many. Yes, the information can be mined from the government. You can never be totally safe from information fraud in this world, but you can minimize it. Maximizing it just because it's in one place, so it may as well be everywhere isn't a proper response to me basically saying, be careful who you give such information too. My information can be mined from anywhere, I realize there is a line (see the post I just made in the "what is your job" thread and how I danced around it). I have a minimum level of trust with my personal information though, I trust my employer with my birth certificate and Social Security card, I trust a business with my credit card number when I perform a transaction, and I trust the government with my banking information when I owe them or they owe me money. Otherwise I'm being kind of paranoid and I'd pay everything in cash which just wouldn't work. Writing a check isn't any better, your routing number and account number is right on it.

I was in the Army when I started posting here, and I don't like to go on record with what my current job is but if you post in the Filibuster you've probably figured it out when you read me on certain topics.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 21, 2009 -> 11:00 AM) Doesn't mean you won't in the future. Also, doing what you are doing makes it really easy to steal your identity on multiple fronts. For example, any nubcake at Comcast can steal it -- since you've given their system full access to your bank account, information any idiot Comcast rep can bring up on their screen in one way or another -- and sell it to some 3rd party who would be proud to be you...and have your money. Or, nix the nubcakes at Comcast being underhanded -- if anyone steals their customer info any number of ways, you're full information, including bank account routing numbers, names, addresses, numbers, etc...would be in their hands. I work in the security industry -- and this is how it's done. People are simply too open/free with very personal information to a multitude of companies, because it makes their lives easier. Doing online banking is easier -- YOU pay when YOU choose -- NEVER give anyone direct access to withdraw from any of your accounts. EVER. Eh... haven't you ever filed taxes? The government didn't start garnishing your paychecks for a year just because they felt like it did they? I'd hope not. Government employees are just like anywhere else, they can't act with impunity. Get caught doing something like that will get you fired immediately and probably a couple of years in prison. The dynamic doesn't change just because it's a government employee and it doesn't matter what rank they are.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 21, 2009 -> 08:00 AM) Just post a .jpg of a dining room table and move on. Most people in this country who talk about socialism, communism, capitalism, nazism or fascism have a very shallow understanding of what any of those terms really means. How often are socialism and communism conflated together? How many think Marx's ideas represent the entirety of communism? Damn near everyone who uses any of those words as a pejorative. No exaggeration. I ended up telling her that a comparison of Obama to a socialist was valid (if debatable) but to a Nazi was not only wildly inaccurate, but playing that card immediately flags you as someone that most people won't pay attention to. (And yes Balta I did point out that they did go to war with actual socialists, and I directed her to the white supremacist website and told her to ask them how they felt about Obama or socialism in general).
