  1. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Nov 4, 2013 -> 10:13 PM) Every guy playing against Rodgers with a 3-20 point lead going into tonight needs to go buy a lottery ticket. I came in to this Bears/Packers game up by about 21 pts. I had Rodgers, he had Lacy/Crosby. I got 1 pt from Rodgers tonight, he has 27 pts from Lacy and Crosby halfway through the 3rd quarter. I f***ing hate Fantasy Football. 3-6 on the season now.
  2. QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 4, 2013 -> 07:57 PM) Skaggs is probably better than Samardzija right now. Right. I wouldn't trade Skaggs OR Bradley for Shark even straight up. A much more realistic trade I'd see would be Holmberg + another prospect for Samardzija. And if the Dbacks are entertaining an offer of a package around Bradley or Skaggs at all, then Rick needs to dial them up immediately because Q's value should be much higher than Sharks.
  3. So rumor is that Cubs and DBacks have discussed a Jeff Samardzija trade. Head over to the MLBTR discussion for some hilarious trade offers from Cubs fans. Here is an ACTUAL comment some one posted. And this part is after he said that the Cubs should trade Samardzija because he isn't so good.... "An offer of Skaggs, Holmberg, Eaton/Pollock, Spruilli and some relievers can make it."
  4. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 4, 2013 -> 06:46 PM) From what I understand, he's one of the nicest guys in the sport. Big believer in charity, etc. One of my best friend's used to work at Niketown and helped Curtis with a bunch of Christmas shopping one year. He said he was just the coolest, most humble guy. Made him feel like a peer. Brian Urlacher was a total asshole, apparently, lol. I've heard a lot about how nice he is, but until that video I guess I didn't realize how fun and playful he was too. If you had no idea who he was when you saw that shoot-the-puck segment you'd have no idea he was an MLB star. Seems extremely down to earth.
  5. CF - Gerardo Parra (L) SS - Alexei Ramirez RF - Avisail Garcia 1B - Jose Abreu C - Jarrod Saltalamachia (S) LF - Dayan Viciedo DH - Adam Dunn (L) 2B - Marcus Semien 3B - Matt Davidson
  6. QUOTE (zenryan @ Nov 4, 2013 -> 07:05 PM) Stevie is gold in every scene of Eastbound. Last night's episode was another great one. Only two episodes left and I just hope they can finish it off in a strong way. I can't believe they are ending the series again after only 1 comeback season. Pump another 2-3 out of this show, it's riding real high right now.
  7. It's a real shame The Grandy Man was offered a QO today because he sure does seem like a super likable guy.... http://www.csnchicago.com/blackhawks/curti...s-ice-potential
  8. Welp, Granderson being offered a QO pretty much saps up all the remaining interest I had in him. I'm not willing to pay him $12M a year AND give up a draft pick. Are picks are more valuable now than they have been in a LONG time. Can't be frivolous with them.
  9. QUOTE (woods of ypres @ Nov 4, 2013 -> 01:17 AM) For people clamoring over Granderson, just remember Granderson is coming off of a wrist injury which will likely zap him of his power. In 2012 when he was healthy, his OBP dropped down to .319. In 2011, and 2012 he had a negative DRS. So, were going to pay Granderson, I assume to be, over 10M a year to play bad defense, not get on base, and not hit for power? Pass. I wouldn't say his defense is bad, because quite frankly, I have no idea what to think of his defense based on advanced metrics. We'd pretty much have to ask a Yankees fan who watched him play day in and day out because the data is all over the place both good and bad. Additionally, I wonder what your definition of "no power" is. Because Granderson recently hit 40+ HR in back to back years. I wouldn't expect him to ever hit that number again, but I think 20 HR is a reasonable benchmark in a full season and I wouldn't consider that "no power"/
  10. QUOTE (scs787 @ Nov 4, 2013 -> 01:57 AM) That makes little sense to me from your standpoint. Granderson struck out 195 times last year with a batting average just 14 points higher while putting up a lower obp. You suggested in the past that Dunn wasn't worth the 15M a year but are now advising they pay Grandy 15M. Like I said, I'm indifferent as long as he produces, but from your standpoint it makes zero sense to me. Well, to be fair, Granderson is almost infinitely more valuable than Dunn is, considering Grandy plays defense, and can sometimes play it really well, and has solid speed and can run the bases. It's only standing in the batters box in which you could make an argument for Dunn.
  11. QUOTE (JoshPR @ Nov 3, 2013 -> 11:19 PM) Can't blame coop if the pitcher is hard headed. I think I heard Grilli saying he was sorry he didn't take good advice from different people earlier in his career. I think the only guy coop wasn't successful with was Masset. Even the great Leo mazzone couldn't do much in Baltimore. Hey we could have flava-flav back... Mike MacDougal too. There is a probably a decent list of failed Coop projects, but the value we gained from his successes FAR FAR FAR outweighs the lack of value we got from a handful of other guys, consider almost all his projects are scrap heap guys. Very rarely does a pitcher come to the Sox and do WORSE.
  12. QUOTE (scs787 @ Nov 3, 2013 -> 11:10 PM) Makes a difference if they're trying to compete those 2 years. Right, which I why I don't think it makes a difference.
  13. QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 3, 2013 -> 10:52 PM) It gets relatively political. The best stuff is how the show is run and the process of getting stories IMO. Just the idea of him going on air without a rundown or a prompter made me feel extreme anxiety just watching it. lol. I get so flustered when the prompter goes down or we have to float a story during the middle of a show, I can't imagine just ad-libbing a major event on national TV. That was intense for me.
  14. QUOTE (ChiSoxFan05 @ Nov 3, 2013 -> 09:44 PM) I saw that too. I'm hoping it's a sign because he's so much better than Alejandro, but I don't know. To those downgrading him, imagine our 2012 lineup with Abreu and Grandy in it. A gigantic improvement. I think even I would rather have De Aza and his contract than Granderson and his contract. I love Granderson, but I don't want him unless he's signing a 2 yr/$24M deal at the most. He should be a 3+ WAR player, but he had an injured 2013 and his defense, sabr speaking, is all over the place. But a 2 yr deal doesn't really make a difference, so I'd rather not sign him at all.
  15. Just got in to The Newsroom last night. I was informed by my profs that as a Journalism and T-Comm student, I HAD to watch this show. I watched the pilot and I loved it. I hope it doesn't get too political like the first scene of the show was, but the stuff actually taking place in the newsroom was great. It was funny how much I could relate to the show. We use the name news source software that they do, iNews, so when I heard the little "beeeep" sounds in the background I immediately recognized that they use the same system. And the jokes about the BP oil spill being "only a yellow" were spot on. We hear our computers beep constantly all day long and 90% of the time they are the yellow stories that are things like lottery drawings or sports updates. We get a handful of oranges a day, which are actual breaking news stories and major developments. I can't remember if it eventually went RED by the end of the pilot episode, but I've been told that red NEVER happens. My profs told me that even when 9/11 happened, it was orange. Hurricane Katrina was orange. Boston bombings was orange. The only time any of us have ever seen RED was when Nokia released some new smart phone last year. LOL. Someone clearly f***ed up on the AP line and made that story red instead of yellow. The newsroom almost had a freak out.
  16. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Nov 3, 2013 -> 02:39 PM) BA Jeff Hoffman Article from ECU scout day. http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/eas...y-jeff-hoffman/ Certainly not out of the question he's available at 3. The best part about picking at #3 is that any way we go, we should have a damn good prospect. We are easily going to be drafting 2 of our top 5 prospects next June. I'm very excited about the draft.
  17. No catch all thread, so I guess I'll ask this here... Why did Avisail Garcia just retweet this??? Any idea what this is reference to Cubano? https://twitter.com/molinagustavo10/status/...828927466815489 A reply to this comment was something about how quickly people forget the past or something.
  18. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 2, 2013 -> 01:39 PM) Just a minor qualm I have with the bolded statement. It's not really accurate to say "Fangraphs values a win at $5m," because that implies that there is a sabermetric formula for measure a win in dollars. This isn't true. Fangraphs has simply measured what teams pay on the open market per WAR. In free agency, teams pay $5m per WAR for players, on average. So that's what is meant when people use that figure to talk about if a player has been "worth" his contract. Ok, I see your point, but we wouldn't know what GMs are paying per win if Fangraphs didn't have the formula in place to begin with. So I don't really know which would is more true than the other since they go hand in hand.
  19. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Nov 2, 2013 -> 01:42 PM) Yet, speed is the catalyst that takes him from good to great player. Due to that, he's too much of a risk. I don't want to pay anybody $20M a year until we know more about the young foundation players. There are too many question marks to add that type of an investment in a player over 30. I don't want to pay him $20M a year either, but that's just because I don't really want to pay ANYONE $20M a year. If I ever reach my goal of working in a front office, it will probably have to be with someone like Oakland. Hah.
  20. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Nov 2, 2013 -> 01:33 PM) I never said I wasn't impressed with his defense. Ok great. We are just telling you he has more to his game than just speed. He is a great defender, he HAS power (32 HR in 2011), he runs the bases well, he gets on base at a decent clip, he doesn't strike out a lot, he walks some. I just have no idea how his arm is, I don't know if I recall if it was good or bad or average. Basically he has a lot more tools than just speed, so even if he is only able to steal 20-30 bases in a few years instead of the 50-70 he has in the past, he can supplement value from other parts of his game.
  21. And just because it was brought up about 30+ yr old OFers being worth $20M or not...... # of OF by season who put up a 4+ WAR after age 30.... 2013 - 7 OF (3 of them had 20+ SB) 2012 - 6 OF (2 of them had 20+ SB) 2011 - 7 OF (1 of them had 20+ SB) 2010 - 6 OF (2 of them had 20+ SB) 2009 - 5 OF (2 of them had 20+ SB) 2008 - 7 OF (3 of them had 20+ SB) I chose a WAR of 4 because Fangraphs values a win close to $5M, so 4+ would get you around that $20M a year figure.
  22. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Nov 2, 2013 -> 01:24 PM) My eyes tell me if a player is a bad/good/great defender. I want to see his positioning, his instincts, his first step, his arm strength, the way he moves, how he reads the ball, the decisions he makes, his rhythm. Defense is an art, not math. Well if you saw Ellsbury you'd be impressed.
  23. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 1, 2013 -> 09:53 PM) You're stuck in what guys did in the past. Ellsbury doesn't win the Sox anything, he might get them back to 80 wins. Money wasted. I understand and agree that just adding Ellsbury and Abreu won't make this team good, but it surely doesn't make this team WORSE. And to say Ellsbury has no upside is still ridiculous. Maybe be doesn't have a ton of room to improve, but if he stays like this or even slowly declines he will be a very valuable player.
  24. QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 2, 2013 -> 12:29 PM) I used that in my old dorm. It was accurate enough that I could tell that it wasn't in my room, but was in the room next to me. Used the Android equivalent to find my girlfriend's SGSIII the other day and it was just as accurate. Very cool to see these features becoming standard. It has limitations for an expert thief, but for self-induced problems it's great. What's it called?
  25. QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 1, 2013 -> 11:59 PM) We give away the best three players in that deal In what world if Jeff F'ing Keppninger better than Mike Moustaks.?
