Who Makes It Back to the post-season first, Sox/Cubs?
ChiliIrishHammock24 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
That's tough because I feel the Sox have a better major league squad, and are flush with good young talent in the majors. The Cubs, however, have only a couple good young major leaguers, but they are STOCKED with great young hitting prospects. In conclusion I think the Sox may make it to the playoffs sooner, but the Cubs will have the longer success over the next decade. -
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 12:07 AM) I can't believe people still watch that show. How is it still on the air? There will always be people in HS. It's the reason why MTV still exists.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 11:57 PM) I guess it's relevant to this thread, is anyone else disappointed about the prospects we received from the Red Sox? I mean Montas has a big arm and control issues so he's a wild card but the other two? eh I think it's about 2-3 years too early to say I don't like the guys we got. Obviously right off the bat they are not high ceiling prospects, but things can change. I really just see this trade as Peavy for Garcia + salary relief. Anything we get them the other 3 guys is a bonus IMO.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 11:52 PM) How could being a Billingsley like pitcher be a bad thing? Lifetime 3.65 ERA, went six straight years without an injury, 8K/9, etc. Lol, my thoughts exactly. If Rienzo turns out to have a Billingsly career, holy s*** we did well. -
I watched part of one of those The Challenge shows tonight for some reason. I can't believe some of those people are STILL doing these shows. I remember Wes from when I was in HS watching this s***. Crazy they are still have the energy for these shows. But in the 20 minutes or so I saw, I absolutely despise that Frank guy. Picking fights w/ everyone and getting in their faces. Then, he stood in one of the rookies ways when he tried to walk by, then told the guy not to touch him. lol, what?

QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 10:26 PM) It would be a bad idea to do anything but Viciedo-ADA-Garcia I'd love to see an upgrade over De Aza. Never trusted him, never will. Work out some deal with Arizona for Quintana + something for 3B Matt Davidson and OF Eaton/Pollock/Parra. -

I wish we could get a video highlight of Avisail beating out that groundball. I keep trying to prove to people that he is fast, but there doesn't seem to be any good video out there yet. -

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 08:08 PM) No Conor ? I don't really consider Gillaspie to be a future cog on this team. If he does well, fine, but an 0 for 5 with 5 Ks wouldn't really affect me any. -

Let's go Rienzo, Phegley, Tank, Garcia, Dunn, Alexei, Beckham, and of course, let's go Royals. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 05:22 PM) Hell on Wheels is back? AMC has done a terrible job marketing it. I had no idea and I enjoyed the first 2 seasons. I've actually seen a ton of commercials for it. It's been moved to Saturday night's, which sounds like it's not doing well, or they are really pushing Low Winter Sun so hard that they bummed out Hell on Wheels to get LWS a larger audience. Either way, HoW season 3 has been solid, but nothing major has really happened yet, just a lot of setting up for things.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 02:04 PM) Great, and you're paying him $11 million or so for the right to have that extra performance. So even in your ideal situation that he seriously improves on this season despite getting another year older and Gillaspie does not improve, the most you've come up with in excess value is about $5-6 million. If you traded away Rienzo, for example, and he put up 1.3 WAR next year, then the White Sox lose that trade next year, and that doesn't take into account the next 5 years of his service time or any performance above that. Giving up any of the Sox's starting pitchers for Headley looks like a really low upside move when you factor in his salary. Ok.

QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 02:01 PM) WAR accounts for the ballpark you play in fWAR does? Niiiice.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 01:48 PM) I'm not sure why you are being so hyperbolic and confrontational about this. Nobody has said that they don't outright want him, but he has been a below average player offensively. In fact, the 3 biggest reasons he's going to be worth almost 3 WAR are his defense, the fact that he plays 3B, and the fact that he doesn't totally suck. Really, 3 WAR is a slightly above average player and is not the type of guy you want to give up a ton to get. On top of that, there are plenty of genuine concerns to be had. First, he'll be 30 next year. Next, he's likely cost $10 mill next year. On top of that, he'll likely require a new contract during his age 31-34 seasons (at least) which will probably be worth in the neighborhood of $48-50 million. I think those raise enough red flags to show some concern regarding the idea of giving up a substantial package for him. I don't recall a "substantial package" between discussed here. I do recall people BARELY willing to concede Scott Snodgress for him though. Even a Matt Lindstrom swap was discussed as being fair value. LOL.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 01:12 PM) And Gillaspie is on track to end up with a WAR of about 1 as a rookie. Gilaspie is paid $500k this year and will make the same next year. Headley is paid $8.575 million this year and will probably make over $10.5 million next year. So, let's say we trade Rienzo for him. We are trading Rienzo, taking on $10 million+, and doing so to get 2 extra WAR over what Gillaspie would give assuming both repeat their seasons this year. But if 2 WAR is worth $10 million on the free agent market, then why give up Rienzo or anything else at all for the rights to spend that money when you could just go on the free agent market and buy a $10 million, 2 WAR upgrade? Basically for that deal to be a smart deal for the White Sox, what they trade away has to give 0 WAR. The only way trading something for Headley next year makes sense in WAR terms is if that player would be expected to produce 0 excess WAR beyond their salary. Well, first of all, Gillaspie is not on track to reach 1.0 WAR. We have about 5 weeks left in the season, and he is sitting at 0.5 WAR, and his 2nd half has been worse than his 1st half. He may actually never get higher than his current 0.5. Headley, on the other hand, has had a pretty even split between halfs, so a 3.0 WAR is definitely a possibility. So we are talking a 2.5 WAR difference, or about $12.5M, for a guy like Headley who everyone is writing off. Assuming Headley can find a middle ground between his "bad" 2013 and his MVP-like 2012, I think a 4+ WAR is within reach, especially if he gets away from Petco Park and is hitting at US Cellular. We are then talking about a 3.5 WAR difference, or about $17.5M from Gillaspie to Headley, assuming Gillaspie repeats his "okay" performance at 3rd and Headley bounces back to a good but not great hitter.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 08:56 AM) He's also had a seasons with 1.4 WAR, 2.3 WAR, and this year he is at 2.5 WAR. There is precedent for him being a relative underachieiver and being a mediocre player. Beyond that, he's a free agent after next season and could command anywhere between $8 and $12 million annually, potentially signing a 4 year deal for $48 million deal heading into his age 30 season. That legitimately could be as poor as a Teahen or Dunn type deal. He's doing SOO bad this year, a year in which no one wants him anymore, that he will end up with a WAR at about 3, which is worth $15M.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 10:50 PM) I don't think we're going to out-suck the Astros and Marlins. But yes, stop winning so much. I want that third pick. We were outsucking the Marlins for a few weeks, and even got to 3.5 GB of Houston at some point. Then the Sox decided to sweep the Yankees, and started to win some series for some reason. This team never fails to let me down, even when they win. -

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 09:37 PM) Preordered for my son on Amazon a month ago. It will be interesting If there are enough PS4 to go around this holiday season for people who did not get to pre order on launch date edition, it is sold out on Amazon now. Today at the press conference they said they have already eclipsed 1 million preorders. That's f***ing insane.

I'd take Chase Headley for MOST of our young pitchers, but Mark Trumbo would also be a nice get. Also, I'd like to see what the Dbacks have in their plans for Matt Davidson.
-
ITT: Chase Headley never hit 31 HR with a 7.2 WAR, or even ever had a 4.4 WAR season, and he is only worth Scott Snodgress.

PS4 will launch Friday, November 15th in North America.

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 06:19 AM) Vogel better not be the brain surgeon. That's be predictable and ruin this season. Starting to think if its the investigator that Deb works for. He has to have a bigger role in this. That was the conclusion I came to after the last episode as well. Now that Deb is going back to the force, that character has no relevance to anything, therefor I am guessing he must have a role w/ this whole thing. Also, not happy they killed the kid. He was funny and very dark and interesting. Also, a bit of a wildcard character.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 05:46 PM) I think we know that hitting in the minors and hitting in the majors are just a bit different. Manto has helped him make adjustments to major league pitching, which was going to take advantage of any weaknesses he might have with his approach at the plate Avi Garcia has been hitting the ball to RF long before he got called up or even traded to this organization. Every highlight of HRs I've seen of him are to RF.
