Sox / Rays talking Jermaine Dye deal
Kenny Hates Prospects replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Ugh. Please no Fernando Perez. He'll be 26 next year and he struck out 156 times in Triple A. If this board doesn't like Josh Fields, then it's not going to like Josh Fields the speedy CF who has no power. We need to be talking to Texas about Julio Borbon. That kid is f***ing awesome. -
QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 11:28 AM) Would we be as excited about Viciedo if he was Brazilian or French? No because those areas aren't known for their baseball programs like Cuba is. It's just like how getting a player from Japan gets people a lot more excited than they would get about a player from Taiwan, or how a player from the DR or Venezuela creates more excitement than a player from the Netherlands.

1. Not enough. It's not enough love until we have ALL the Cuban players! Muahahahaha... 2. Triple A. Double-A is more of a prospects league than Triple A, which has a lot of players who are good enough to play there but not good enough to stick in the Majors. I'd think Triple A would be the comparison because I'd imagine Cuba would be similar. You've got the Yunieski Betancourts and the Yoslan Herreras as well as the Alexeis and Dayans. I also would imagine that because of the competition in Cuba, the guys who wouldn't be able to make it in the Majors here would be more comparable to AAAA players than AA organizational fodder.

QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 10:48 AM) Screw competing, let's get younger....YUCK We're contenders without Javy and Dye. With Javy and Dye we're better in '09 on paper, but we're still not a shoe-in for the division title. Why not add some more to the system and try to make ourselves AWESOME in 2010 and beyond, instead of just pretty good? Besides, this could end up being just like the Garland situation last year. Many were b****ing, including myself, about trading a veteran workhorse and starting Gavin freakin' Floyd in his place. It looked like such an obvious blunder, but we ended up a lot better because of it. If we didn't make that move then we wouldn't have ended up where we did. -

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 10:51 AM) Edwin and Wade...mark me down. If we got that I'd cry with joy. The signing of Viciedo is already bringing me close to it. I love Kenny. He's like a Kung Fu carebear, except he doesn't love you and he's probably hiding in your bushes with a big scary knife. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 10:41 AM) Ed Jackson is a guy who could defenitely find his way to Chicago in a deal. The Rays want to dump him badly from the sounds of it. I wouldn't phrase it quite that way. The Mets badly want to dump Luis Castillo and the Angels badly want to dump GMJ. The Rays have a ton of SP talent ready in McGee, Davis, and Niemann PLUS they've got 6 SP in the Majors with Price in the picture. They want to deal Edwin Jackson because the believe he's the weakest link in a very strong chain (although I'd disagree and would rather deal Sonnencrap, but that's just me) and they don't want to pay him arbitration if they don't have to. -

Awesome!! This is exactly what I wanted, arms from Tampa Bay!!! Kenny is so awesome. If he gets a starter and a piece for Dye then he can turn around and deal Javy to the Braves, Rangers, Mets, Nats, O's, or possibly even elsewhere in a surprise (those teams highlighted are my preference because they've got close CF talent and close SP talent). Get a couple pitchers to compete for the 5th slot, sign a reclamation project if need be, and continue to get younger. I love it! BTW, and this is probably just me being excited, but did anyone look at the John Mayberry, Jr. for Greg Golson swap as potentially something Kenny might be involved in? Because the Rangers are a great fit for either Dye, Jenks, or Vazquez and actually they're one of Kenny's most frequent trading partners (Danks-McCarthy deal, Lujan-Stewart deal, a near-completed deal for Otsuka last year, and there's another one I think). The Rangers have got starting pitching and a lot of CF talent which IMO is what we should be targeting. Bring in another CF to either compete for the job this year or move up alongside Danks. -
Our leadoff possibilities are tightening

At this point I don't want to see the Sox trade Fields at all. It could be an enormous mistake. Give him a year at 3B and stick him at the bottom of the order. -
YAY!!!!!! YAAAAAAY!!!!!! This makes me so happy!!!!! Take that Yankees, you dumb motherf***ing cocksuckers!!! Yeah, bet you still think that Loaiza for Contreras deal was a steal, huh??? Try Loaiza for Contreras, El Duque, Alexei, and Viciedo!!! It's all thanks to that one damn f***ing awesome deal!!! So f*** you Yanks, Kenny Williams OWNS your b**** asses!!!

^And Broadway walked out on the team instead of hanging around the locker room for the playoffs, so you can't even use the intangibles/grinder argument in his favor. Every ST there are bunches of non-roster invitees cut who are better players than he is, yet he gets his spot on the 40.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 20, 2008 -> 04:25 PM) Quite frankly, yes. Seriously? Cook at least has some pop. Owens has speed. Both K too much but Cook is better at taking walks. Both are corner OF's. I'd take Cook since neither should be in CF. Lujan and Rodriguez at least have fastballs and can strike people out. Broadway is pretty much garbage. He couldn't even handle mop-up in the Majors and has been getting killed at Charlotte for over 2 years now. It's hard for me to see anyone being worse than that.

Implications of Teixeira sweepstakes

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 20, 2008 -> 04:21 PM) If the cost was Lance Broadway and they were paying 1/2 of his contract, why not. P.s. Edited topic title because I saw the name of this thread and figured somehow someone already had inked Tex. We don't need offense that bad. I'd rather take the chance on Fields because if he's healthy and he breaks out he's worth 100X more than Lowell. Dumping Lance Broadway would be tempting though, but I'd ask for some longshot prospect that doesn't take up roster space. -

Yeah, no thanks. -
BTW, when are the Sox able to put Contreras back on the 60-day DL again? Because that's another roster spot.
-
So wait a minute: are Jerry Owens and Lance Broadway better than any of these guys?

http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/ufc-cuts-fitch-15235 The UFC cut Jon Fitch for refusing to allow the UFC to use his likeness for video games. It says more AKA fighters may follow. This is a pretty big loss for their WW division and I certainly hope Koscheck, Cain, and Swick don't follow. Also, Dana is considering bringing Gina Carano into the WEC and Fedor wants to fight Lesnar. More bulls*** from Fedor's camp. They still won't sign any reasonable deals so it's all just talk. It's his loss though. Aside from Barnett there are no HW's in Affliction that pose even the slightest threat to him and there are no big money fights there at all. AA is going to get crushed. While Affliction's HW division is better on paper, Brock, Randy, and another Nog fight would make him a lot more money and provide a stiffer test than anything Affliction can offer, plus it would give him a hell of a lot more exposure. The UFC even has such a deep LHW pool that they could pull someone from there to fight him too. Yet it won't happen because his manager thinks M-1 is a viable organization that is somehow going to expand internationally during an international economic crisis, and do it around two reality shows that nobody gets on TV that focus on one guy who casual fans in the hottest MMA market in the world right now don't know about or care about. Dumbass. Yeah, you've got the bargaining power, sure.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 19, 2008 -> 11:20 PM) So in conclusion 2005 was great, and we have mixed feeling on the value of Carl Everett. Anyone have any new thoughts on this Swisher deal? Hank Steinbrenner just dyed his pubes pink. Go team!!! Do the worm!!! Grinder grinder grinder!!!

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Nov 19, 2008 -> 11:05 PM) More towards Jeremy than anything. I see. QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Nov 19, 2008 -> 11:11 PM) Thank goodness. I'm glad I didn't respond then. Faith in Kenny Hates Prospects has been restored! Thanks. I made a post that gave away my sarcasm earlier, but it was on the last page so maybe it was kind of hidden. But yeah, it's dumb to say "oh, Player A didn't compare with David Ortiz in Bill James' FUKWADD stat so that means he sucks and shouldn't be given credit for '05." Of course I'm exaggerating, but not by much.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 19, 2008 -> 10:42 PM) I do actually agree it was a fluke, and it was the greatest fluke I've ever seen and quite frankly participated in during my life. Yep, and that seems to be how championships are won in this era of baseball. Because of free agency it is hard to put together a team full of All-Stars every year without spending like the Yankees, which still doesn't guarantee anything. You need to have a bunch of players come out of nowhere to have uncharacteristically great seasons. Look at the Phils. While they have some huge star power over there, they've counted on guys like Jason Werth and Greg Dobbs who were for the longest time seen as AAAA players, plus Jamie Moyer had an amazing year, and they got huge seasons out of JC Romero and Rudy Seanez. And if you look to their opponents in Tampa, those guys had break out seasons from Balfour and Howell who may never replicate their success, and the whole year the Rays never even had anything resembling a respectable DH. You need to have this stuff happen in order to win, so while you can say 2005 was a fluke for the Sox, it's pretty much always a fluke for whoever wins it. Look at the crap the Cardinals won with in 2006.
-
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Nov 19, 2008 -> 10:55 PM) Never said he was a top DH, but he was our DH on a World f***ing Series f***ing Champion team. They made it happen, and for that I will always have a soft spot for those players and what they did for us that year. I dont care if it was a fluke, looking back, there was a ton of career years like you said. Im just thankful that those guys came together and got the job done. Discrediting the accomplishments to me is foolish. Everett was not a bad player, not great, but not bad. He was an integral part of the team. Everyone that contributed to that team that year was integral, they all added to it somehow, some mroe than others, but that championship was a culmination of the success of every individual on that roster. I was being sarcastic.

Cubs targeting Teahen? Does that make sense?
Kenny Hates Prospects replied to caulfield12's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (Frank the Tank 35 @ Nov 19, 2008 -> 09:22 AM) This just became more feasible... Royals got Coco from Boston (as reported on the Score). As I stated in my offseason projection plan, the Royals have some position players to trade. They now have Gordon, Butler, Shealy, Jacobs, Teahen, DeJesus, Gathright, Crisp, Guillen, and eventually Moustakas to fit into 6 spots. Teahen has already been pushed out of the picture by Crisp, Guillen, and DeJesus. Moustakas isn't close to ready. Gathright is a 4th OF at best. Gordon has no challengers at 3B. Shealy is on the outside looking in and probably doesn't have a whole lot of trade value. Jacobs, Kila, and Butler are really the ones fighting for 2 spots. Dealing Teahen and Shealy might get them a couple parts, but nothing that is all that significant on the surface. Actually, a Cubs deal based around Ronny Cedeno for Teahen might work very well for both clubs. The Royals could then move Aviles to 2B. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 19, 2008 -> 07:42 PM) Because Shane Victorino is a better all-around player than Dye is. KW would do it; Amaro Jr wouldn't. Yeah that deal is an easy win for the Sox. Add in Jenks and maybe it gets more interesting, but I doubt the Phils would deal Victorino regardless. Greg Golson seems to still need a lot of work.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Nov 19, 2008 -> 05:21 PM) He was only the starting DH and what, #3/4 hitter? His VORP wasn't high enough. It's important for us all to take a step back every once in a while to remind ourselves that Carl Everett was not one of the best DH's in baseball during the 2005 season. It's duly important that we remind ourselves that Willie Harris, Geoff Blum, Pablo Ozuna, and Luis Vizcaino are all now fringe players, and that Politte, Hermanson, and Cotts have never come close to replicating their career seasons. We must make sure we do not celebrate these players to the point where we forget to remind ourselves that 2005 was nothing more than a fluke.

QUOTE (Jeremy @ Nov 19, 2008 -> 05:14 PM) Yeah, not properly cherishing a mediocre performance. I'll resign my Sox fandom in shame pronto. Well, there's a difference between having fond memories of certain contributions and claiming a player was a fantastic performer when he wasn't. I'll let people choose their own emotions about the players on that team, that's not my place. Personally, I love that Geoff Blum hit that home run but in general I feel pretty indifferent about a career utility player who had about 100 plate appearances for my team and didn't perform spectacularly on the whole. But everyone looks for different things in their players. There's the objective and the subjective. The claim that Everett was a crux in that World Series when he probably wasn't one of the top 15 contributors fails on an objective level. If people want to adore him because he made some contributions during a great season that's perfectly fine with me. Nobody is saying Carl Everett and Geoff Blum are or were world-beaters. They're saying they love those guys because of what they did when it really counted. Keep in mind, this has all been in response to your absurd belief that Kenny Williams got hosed in acquiring Crazy Carl. It's clear you enjoy statsheet baseball more than the real thing. Good for you. Most of us don't try to rip apart our World Series-winning heroes by taking the biggest accomplishments of their lives, ascribing a set of numbers to them, and then using those sets of numbers to devalue said players by comparing them with the best of their peers. While everyone else was screaming and shouting and celebrating and drinking beer, I'm sure you were sitting at a desk somewhere with your calculator adding up Win Shares, scratching your head wondering what the hell had just happened.
