Was Trading Brandon Allen a Mistake?
Kenny Hates Prospects replied to Ozzie Ball's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 03:50 AM) The black Ryan Sweeney also has 15 K's in 37 at-bats. True, but check out his stint in Charlotte. Give him a year in a majors - or maybe just two months - and then let's see if he's striking out at similar pace. -

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 01:06 PM) On the other hand one would think by reading these posts that Tony Pena 25 hits in 21 innings, 11 ER, 2.5 BB’s per/9, 1.7, HR’s per/9, 10.4 hits per/9 make him one of the most dominate set-up men in the league. T-Bolt for the win... ...and he's got it! -
The green ranger is going into MMA. The red ranger did gay porn. The pink ranger posed topless (remember this from back in the day, had the pictures). Someone else on the show murdered a family supposedly to pay for an operation to get a sex change and then, while in prison, attempted to cut off his penis with a razor. ...and that's all I know from a short google search. There are probably a thousand more tales to tell. I remembered that show as a kid, and I guess I can see how they've all ended up so f***ed. Those putties (sp?) that they'd fight (basically jobbers, jabronis, etc.) were pretty creepy, like they'd wear tight chubby suits and hide out in rocky outcroppings waiting to jump out and suddenly defile these productive young members of society sexually, and then they'd get their asses kicked, but in the process they'd anger the head child molester, who had this gigantic robot thing that I'm sure was capable of holding a lot of candy. So then the power rangers would make their own robot and fight the molester robot and then something else would happen and yadda yadda. But the point is, these wholesome young actors were severely traumatized. I feel bad for the green ranger and getting crushed in MMA probably isn't what he needs right now.

White Sox September To-Do/See List
Kenny Hates Prospects replied to Chisoxfn's topic in Pale Hose Talk
We play 6 games against the Tigers, so in theory we could get to 6 games back, play at the same pace as the Tigers, and then we could sweep them in both series' and force another Game 163. I'm just sayin... -
White Sox September To-Do/See List

Agreed with most of this, but there's no reason to get a look at Carlos Torres. If we have an option on Freddy then it will probably be exercised because it looks like Freddy's fastball is back. Dan Hudson is our #6 if we keep Freddy, and if not then Hudson or a new acquisition becomes #5. The Hynick kid we just picked up is probably right there with Torres if not above him. Torres will be our Charlie Haeger/Felix Diaz/Josh Stewart, etc. except because of depth he won't get as many chances as those guys got. And there's no way we stick that arm in the pen when we'll have all kinds of power arms competing with each other for a job or two in ST. -
The Padres love the deal because they got out of Peavy's contract. The guys the Sox traded all have ability, but everyone in baseball knows that talent-for-talent it is lopsided in the Sox' favor.

Garrett Johnson continuing to disappoint. Nevin Griffith: 7IP, 5H, 1R, 2BB, 2K Logan Johnson & Luis Sierra each with 3 hits. Morel hitless with a BB. Gilmore with a 2B.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 08:32 PM) You don’t have to be a professional out to see that lefty-hitting 1st basemen who has hit well in the minors should be valued over a relief pitcher. Don't even bother. He loves that flawed line of thinking. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 09:19 PM) And if Brandon Allen puts up .260/.330/.470 and Tony Pena puts up 2.50 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and pitches 75 innings, who is more valuable? I'll take the .800 OPS athletic 1B performing at the low end of his potential over the spotty setup man in the middle of a career year. -

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 06:37 PM) Oh Dear God. What a heinous act?! Definitely not for the weak at heart. Ken Harrelson, I hope you turn away from your television if you ever witness this. See? That's EXACTLY what I want. *Danks hits Morneau with a pitch* Business is about to pick up! *Flowers stabbing Gomez in the stomach repeatedly with a broken bat* Good God, Kang, somebody get in there and stop it! The man has children! *AJ kicking the crap out of an already injured Kevin Slowey, and stomping all over his arm and elbow* He's stomping a mudhole in 'em! That would be my playoffs. -
New JPNese, taking suggestions for next week...
Kenny Hates Prospects replied to JPN366's topic in FutureSox Board
For your next addition I'd like you to tell us why you have Christian Marrero as a future top-10 prospect for us. Not that I'm disagreeing with you as you see the kid and I don't, but I'm wondering because he hasn't really been on my radar as a starting position player prospect. His numbers show that he's got pop and makes enough contact, but he's only walked 29 times this year after walking almost twice as often the year before. He's 18-for-29 in career SB so it appears he's not Konerko slow. Does he have Dye-like speed or something? Tell us (or just me) everything you know about this kid because there's not a ton out there. I believe I've read about his strong arm. How's his defense? What kind of baserunner is he? Also his splits this season suggest he doesn't fair too well against lefties. He's hitting .275 off them with a .490 SLG, but he has an astounding 16 K in 51 AB with the Barons. Against RHP he has just 32 K in 174 AB. -
QUOTE (DirtySox @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 06:24 PM) Is there a reason Huddy only went 3 innings? He's thrown 144 IP this season already. I'm guessing 150 is the magic number. Next year they'll probably ramp him up to 180 or so if they keep him as a starter.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 06:18 PM) Also, because he touches himself at night. Carlos Quentin is touched by God.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 06:06 PM) All the speculation about Thome being back next year is just that total speculation. Thome talked with the Dodgers after knowing they wanted to trade for him and he told them he coulf not physuically play 1B anymore. I do wonder if he could as an emergency or some similar reason? I do buy the idea the Sox are hoping to give Jim Thome a chance to play in a World Series again and traded him to LA when we failed to get into position for a run at it ourselves. My speculation is that Jim T will not be abck here in a Sox uniform in 2010 regardless if he is a great guy or not, which he is for sure. The Sox will rebuild and we may obviously see more changes. Dye may be gone as well as Konerko and we will see some pitching changes. You could be correct and maybe Thome never is back with us, but we're going to have to find another big lefty bat then. I don't see the pitching changing much. The rotation is set with Peavy-Buehrle-Floyd-Danks-Freddy and Hudson as the 6th starter/emergency guy. I imagine he'll come out of the pen, but maybe he starts the year in Charlotte as insurance. I do think the bullpen gets one new guy, probably another righty setup man to replace Dotel (not even Kenny can trust Pena in that role), and then instead of getting a reliable secondary lefty, Kenny will instead sign a bunch of AAAA blowhards to compete for the spot in the ST like he did going into the 2006 season. Maybe this is the year we get Figgins - although if he wants 4+ years I hope we stay out of the bidding.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 05:56 PM) No. Apparently moving from LF to RF is similar to moving from DH to SS. I don't think we really want him in RF anyway. Hopefully the Sox are going to learn from their mistakes over the last few years and will beef up the defense over the offseason. If they pick up an above-average defensive RF with CQ staying in LF and Rios in CF our OF defense becomes a strength for us against most teams while we're on the road, which would be huge as far as increasing our chances of winning road games. -
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 05:54 PM) Well #2 is where you miss the whole point. Jim Thome gained 12 games in the standings last night. He went from a team that's 6 games out of the playoffs to a team that's 6 up. He has a much better chance of getting his ring with the Dodgers than he did the Sox. The trade was made as a favor to Thome, the class act that he is. This also changes nothing in terms of 2010, Thome will be a free agent at year's end free to sign with the Sox if the 2 sides see fit. Thome supposedly had talked with the Dodgers directly as early as yesterday morning, so I think it's very possible if not likely that Kenny talked to Thome about the arb situation before the trade and explained matters from the Sox perspective. Thome doesn't have a lot of options and the Sox organization still seems to love him. He's still productive and a great veteran presence and clubhouse influence, which will be even more important now that Dye and maybe even Konerko are out the door. I think there's a very good chance he's back with us next year, especially since Thome still wants to play in Chicago or Cleveland, and Cleveland isn't going to be doing anything for a while.
-
1. Thome is getting a favor from the Sox to compete in the playoffs 2. Thome is a FA after the season and is coming off a huge, outdated contract that does not reflect his performance. The choice would have been to offer a small amount, waaaaay below the arb figure, and hope he decides against testing the market to re-up with us, or else let the negotiation window close, deny arb, and lose him for good. By trading him we get around this. Actually it is about 1000X easier to bring Thome back for 2010 now. 3. Kenny wants to make a statement to other players that he'll follow through with his word. Those are just off the top of my head, but there may be more reasons.

SoxNet: What the Sox Got In Return
Kenny Hates Prospects replied to Chisoxfn's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Hynick sounds like he could be another Carlos Silva. Great value for Contreras because he looks like trade bait for a worthwhile player. The Thome deal makes a ton of sense because the Sox can now offer him a market-value FA contract during the FA period, so they don't have to worry about denying arb and losing him should Thome want to test the market. This move actually increases the likelihood of Thome coming back, and of course it will be great for Thome if he can get to the playoffs again. But what I don't understand is why organizational minor leaguers are exchanged in these things. I know it's all for show so the stupid fans think they got something in return, but is it really so important to do that? It's the same as in the Carlos Lee deal where we got Pods and Vizcaino, but then some organizational guy was a throw-in to make it seem better. Kind of pointless IMO. -
I hope Jimmy goes on a tear with the Dodgers. I love this move because now we'll be able to bid on Thome as a FA at market value instead of dealing with the problems arbitration presents. I wouldn't mind at all to see Thome back at a reasonable price as part of a DH platoon with somebody else who doesn't suck.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 12:56 PM) We should get into a big ass fight. That might be the only thing that can wake this team up. I love this idea. I want to see Johnny Danks hit Justin Morneau in the face with a 94mph fastball. Then I want the benches to empty with the Twins players kicking the majority of the Sox players' asses. Beckham, Rios, Floyd, Danks, Buehrle, and Thornton can stay out of it. And DJ Carrasco and Peavy too, if he's there. I'd say keep AJ out of the fray but he's our biggest weapon. The rest of them can fight to the death. And give Flowers some more steroids so he can go on a rampage, breaking his bat into shards and then stabbing Carlos Gomez with it about 47 times. And get Jim Ross to replace Hawk. Stoney and his teenage wife can head on back to Taco Bell for all I care. I hate this team. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 09:19 PM) Viciedo is the 1st base prospect of the future. It is why Allen was much more expendable than some would have liked. Beckham is the 3b of the present and future. Ramirez the SS of the present and future. Really, have you heard that from the organization? I hope that's not true. I'm not sold on Getz or Nix as everyday 2B when we have Beckham and Alexei capable of anchoring the MIF. And Viciedo has only played one game at 1B as a member of the Sox. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 09:14 PM) It might be hard to put a Paulie deal together so fast, but I think he'll be gone, along with THome and Dye. Sox are going to change there veteran presence in the lineup and my guess is AJP will be the new captain. Eat a couple mil and send him to the Braves. Then call up... oh wait. Nevermind. [heavy sarcasm]Maybe we can get Casey Kotchman for him?[heavy sarcasm] But yeah, if we move Paulie we need something other than the likes of Josh Kroeger, Aubrey Huff, or Kevin Millar to put there. -
^Updated, and I loved watching that fight too. Brock is the s***.
