QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 11:51 AM) DeAza is good as gone anyway. Viciedo is pointless to dump for pennies on the dollar. I'm not sure how/why you would factor them into a Granderson addition anyway. Granderson = no 2nd round pick plus the money, and you're getting exactly what out of him? He's the type of player that should hit a sharp decline pretty soon, a speedy K power guy. No thanks, dumb move. We're not contenders & he should garner less trade interest 1-2 season from now than he has interest on the open market now, and his return would probably be pretty underwhelming. This is where Jerry Reinsdorf scares me. He doesn't want to watch 95 losses again. He wants at least a watchable product year-to-year, and hope to get a bunch of career years at the same time. So if Granderson fits in the big league budget, I can see him wanting Kenny and Rick to get him, and not worry about the draft pick.

6 months from tonight. A lot can happen in 6 months.

2013-14 off season player movement thread

Royals get Norichika Aoki from Milwaukee for LP Will Smith. -
Verducci had a pretty good article in support of Jack Morris. It probably won't change anybody's mind, but he makes some good points. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mlb/news/...s-hall-of-fame/

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 03:00 PM) Sox weren't likely to do much before PK decided anyway, so the idea that the team is complete as-is has no foundation in reality. I suppose it is possible they make no more moves - but I'd say that is highly unlikely. With all of the activity this week, I'm surprised the Sox didn't get something done too. Now I'm looking at De Aza, Viciedo, Gillaspie, Ramirez, Beckham...that's a whole lot of mediocre that nobody wants apparently. Sure, the Sox will get another catcher like Lobaton, but that might be it.

If Arizona wants Sale, start with Archie Bradley and Didi Gregorius, and then add 2-3 more. But they've already said Bradley isn't going anywhere.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 02:45 PM) Yep. I hope Hahn doesn't even bother going to the Winter Meetings. His work is obviously done. Oh I know. It's just Konerko saying he doesn't want to go out on a 99-loss team. There's not much Hahn can do to avoid a losing season next year. And it will more than likely be an upper 80's-90+ loss team no matter what. Konerko wants to come back so he can acknowledge the last lap of his career while it's going on. One of the things he said at the end of the season was that he regretted not doing that as the 2013 season was going on. Now he can.

It's a 24 man roster, with occasional walk-on appearances by PK. This is the team right now (roughly): De Aza, Ramirez, Garcia, Dunn, Abreu, Viciedo, Gillaspie, Flowers, Beckham Garcia, Keppinger, Phegley, Konerko Sale, Quintana, Santiago, Danks, Johnson Leesman, Veal, Webb, Petricka, Jones, Lindstrom, Reed 90 losses at least. Hope Konerko enjoys it.

Seems like good timing to give Semien an opportunity to play 150 games. See what he's got. Let's see what the Sox do in the next week. Beckham or Alexei could be gone--although I'm not sure who wants them.
-
OK, I get it. He was getting 1 mil 2014-2020 from his last contract. So now it's 2.5 total for 2014, and the 1 mil a year shifts to 2015-2021.

It is true, once the draft pick came into play, there wasn't really a good reason to pick up Granderson. Good player, but not the right fit.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 10:16 AM) If Abreu struggles in ST, it gives the Sox of having him go the same route as Viciedo and Puig of getting some success in the minors before coming up. The Sox could start him in AA and have him work his way up to the majors by June as he adjusts to American baseball. In the meantime they can work on dumping Dunn in a deal. Abreu would have to be completely outmatched in ST for him to go down to Charlotte. If that happens, we're so f'd.

QUOTE (staxx @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 10:12 AM) its highly unlikely we're competing, let the man leave on his terms and have a farewell after all he has done Emotionally, I'm in agreement. As a baseball move, it's kind of ridiculous to bring back a 38-year-old coming off a bad season for a 99-loss team---with a logjam at DH/1B. At the end of the day, the Sox aren't making the playoffs next year anyway, so I'm not unhappy...especially if Dunn gets moved.
-
It's the Paul Konerko, "Smell the Roses" tour. Whatever. Hope they trade Dunn still.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 09:56 AM) Bruce Levine @MLBBruceLevine 2m Konerko was told that he would be a DH verses some Left handed pitching and help Abreau as a backup at first . Contract $2.5 Levine has consistently misspelled Abreu. Cubs fan.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 09:41 AM) This move is all JR. Sucks to see Hahn have his hands tied by his owner already. Absolutely. And Hahn has to talk to the media and smile and lie his butt off. Part of the job, I guess.
-
Deferring part of 2.5 mil? What am I missing here?
-
You get 324 starts between 1B and DH. Maybe it can work with something like this... Abreu- 140 Dunn- 108 Konerko-76 Nahh...this is going to be bad.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 09:27 AM) I mean, maybe he'll kick ass? Have to wonder if we have something arranged to send Dunn out of town That would be nice. Both things.
-
When the answer wasn't "no" four weeks ago, it was always going to be an eventual "yes". So this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. 2014 has the potential to be just as bad as 2013. Hope the draft class is good in 2015.
-
It feels like nobody want our s***ty players that the Sox overvalue to begin with. Stuck in the mud for another year.
-
It's not happening. And what's your definition of filling seats? This team had Frank Thomas and there were teams that didn't get 1.4 mil.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 08:21 PM) That's how much he averages now Exactly. Dumb money. But they have it.
