The Miami Marlins thread
QUOTE (fathom @ May 5, 2012 -> 09:56 PM) Great is too strong a word for how he's been. He feasted off of some of the worst offenses in the NL so far. There's no question he'll be a low 3 ERA guy in the NL this year, IMO. Next 5 starts: vs NY at Atl vs Col vs SF at Phi And then the Marlins have two straight weeks of Red Sox and Rays, and then Blue Jays and Cardinals. He'll get tested in June. Might be a different for Mark being on the other side of interleague play.

Complete game for Buehrle. Great first month for him in a Marlins uniform.

4-1 Marlins going to the bottom of the 9th. Buehrle still in there.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 5, 2012 -> 07:51 PM) By that vein, we should have lost today then. Those kind of games find a way to balance out. Yeah, that's why I said 16-11 or 15-12. The Sox have blown 3 and got 1 back today. So 15-12 if that makes you feel better. You go 15-12 six times, you win 90 games.

5/5/12 Sox vs Cats 3:05 CT
QUOTE (YASNY @ May 5, 2012 -> 09:24 PM) He's not getting the as much movement from his scroogie as he did in the minors. He says that baseballs are different. This is more of a mental hurdle he has to overcome more than anything. That said, I think he should be starting in AAA right now. What I would like to see is hopefully Axelrod and Stults giving some good starts tomorrow and Monday, and then after Stults' start, they send Santiago down to be a starting pitcher in Charlotte. Then re-shuffle the rotation when they can to get it to: Peavy, Danks, Floyd, Humber, and then go Axelrod or Stults depending on the matchup. That is, if both guys are pitching well. If one is really standing out, obviously you have to go with the hot hand. But they need more long relief options now that Sale is out of there. And let's face facts, Santiago has lost whatever he had going in spring training. He's not ready.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 5, 2012 -> 07:03 PM) See you next year I had to vent. It's a 13-14 team that should be 15-12 or 16-11. There's still a lot to like about this team, but they need to get Danks in line and find a way to scratch 4 or more runs across most days. We'll see what happens between now and the break. First step would be to get over .500 and then win some more.

QUOTE (jeffro2525 @ May 5, 2012 -> 04:59 PM) Rios average continuing to take a nose-dive down below .280. 5 for his last 36. He's been a carbon-copy of last season the last 9 games. Do you watch the games, or just look at stats? He's crushed some balls.

Schedule Offers Hope
Unfortunately, the Sox aren't in a position to look at their remaining schedule. They need (or needed) wins now. If they can't get to ten games over by the break, they have to sell. So if they have 59 games until the break, they basically have to go 35-24 to stay in it. With the Sale move, they have less of a chance now. Danks needs to pick it up, and Axelrod has to be good enough.

2012 White Sox Catch-All thread
Does anyone else torture themselves by listening to White Sox Weekly? Rongey is such a Sox apologist. No move the Sox makes is wrong. Yeah, I know. That's his job. Whatever.

Orioles trouncing Boston. Could be 18-9 to start the season. They'll fall back, but good for them.

Chris Sale is now the CLOSER?!/Until he's not (Update)
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 5, 2012 -> 01:22 PM) I have to give the Sox some credit: they didn't compound the mistake of moving Sale to starter by trying to keep him there until his elbow situation got worse. They made a decisive move and they did it pretty damn quick. Just look at the Joba mess in NYC, by contrast. I still think the first logical move would be to shut Sale down for two weeks and think long and hard about it. But that's just me.

Chris Sale is now the CLOSER?!/Until he's not (Update)
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 5, 2012 -> 12:53 PM) If I'm Addison Reed I've got to be pretty bummed about this move. In my opinion, the Sox are one management move away from being 15-11 right now. And that's not having Reed in mind to close from the first day of spring training. This team has a lot of good things going for it so far. I'm not just going with the "Oh well, it's a rebuilding year" mindset. This team can win ballgames. And with the Angels starting so slow, you never know about a second wildcard. 88-win teams can earn a shot at the playoffs. Teams that maximize their talent can get there. Teams that give games away will always come up short. This team hands over games on a silver platter, and unfortunately part of it, a lot of it, is based on one management decision.

Marlins scored 5 in the 1st inning. Josh Johnson gave up 6 in the 3rd to the Padres. That guy ain't right.

Chris Sale is now the CLOSER?!/Until he's not (Update)
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 4, 2012 -> 05:52 PM) The other thing is now there are 4 lefties. Rivera getting hurt, maybe Thornton is heading to NY. The way Floyd owns the Red Sox, you'd think the Yankees may want to do a package deal with Floyd/Thornton. We get Phil Hughes in a change of scenary situation and some of those young pitchers, although I hear Banuelos and Betances have been bad this season.

Chris Sale is now the CLOSER?!/Until he's not (Update)
I just heard Coop say they're doing it for Sale's career, not for the team. Truthfully, if Sale is informed and wants to continue starting at his own risk, why not let him? If anything, limit his pitch count to 90 and actually use some of those long relievers? To me, there was a way to do this without taking Sale out of the rotation permanantly this season. This team is going to get blown up real good by July 31st.

QUOTE (Chisoxrd5 @ May 4, 2012 -> 05:20 PM) You must be on the White Sox payroll given the defensive nature of this reply. Sounds markedly similar to the way Kenny Williams reacts when he is asked questions about the empty cupboard that is the White Sox farm system. No, I'm just not in the mood for minor league geek snark. And don't get me wrong, I'm a quasi-minor league geek too.

Chris Sale is now the CLOSER?!/Until he's not (Update)
QUOTE (DirtySox @ May 4, 2012 -> 05:15 PM) That's okay. He can be replaced by one of the plethora of young high upside arms the Sox have in the minors. OK, Keith Law wannabe.

So depressing. I was really looking forward to him starting 32 games for the Sox for many years. I hate this so much.

2012 MLB Catch All thread
They're just saying "twisted knee" and an MRI is set for tonight. I saw the video. Rivera went back to the wall on a Jayson Nix-hit flyball. Planted his foot on the track and was hurt before he even touched the wall. So it wasn't like he was goofing around trying to steal a BP homer. Unfortunate. I hope he's ok.
