Maybe something became available in the late 70s/early 80s that really worked to keep those guys bodies from falling apart? How much has the average pitch speed increased? I know guys are throwing harder nowadays. My math might be off, but 1 MPH difference could cut .02 or .03 of a second off the time to the plate. Every little bit makes the difference.
