Charles Barkley declares war with SABR nerds/quants
LittleHurt05 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 13, 2015 -> 01:36 PM) That is also an interesting trend. It will be interesting if over time the Ivy league and the more academic elite schools have greater success on the field. I don't see how it would have any effect on their on field success. First of all, their lack of scholarships and tough academic standards will limit their ability to recruit top talent. Also, no high school star player is gonna say, "I want to play at the same school that Andrew Friedman studied at!". Plus, it is much tougher to scout and gain info about high school kids, so any advantages they gain in scouting are limited within their recruiting. -

Chris Kuc @ChrisKuc · 5m 5 minutes ago Kyle Cumiskey: "I'm just filling in for someone who is hurt." That appears to be Michal Rozsival. #Blackhawks Ryan Hartman will make his NHL debut for #Blackhawks tonight. Ben Smith is still on ice following #Blackhawks' morning skate. Could be a scratch for the first time this season. -

I wanted to check what Shaw'sw contract status is, but then I remembered that CapGeek was shut down. -
For some reason I like the Coyotes tonight. (So you probably want to bet heavy on the Sharks. )

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 12, 2015 -> 09:35 PM) Instead of being mildly excited about our ncaa tourney chances I'm now pessimistic. Hopefully NJIT can get on a winning streak and make these Michigan losses look better. -

Dan Dakich's son plays for Michigan? Why would they pick Dakich to announce this game then? No comment about the actual game yet, thankfully I'm drinking or it might have been turned off already. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 12, 2015 -> 05:21 PM) It would all be OK. It was almost 10 years ago that we thought Mark Buehrle fractured his foot and everything that Williams and company did leading into 2005 was all for naught. http://articles.latimes.com/2005/mar/22/sports/sp-bbnotes22 Dont forget about 2007. Toby Hall hurt his shoulder in spring training and everyone freaked out. 90 losses later, they were right.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Feb 11, 2015 -> 12:47 PM) Now that is shocking. Good for the kid though to still get those plane rides and collect an NHL check. He still should be in the lineup though. At least Q thinks he should be in the top 6, just no room right now. Richards seems to have hit a wall, maybe Tuevo can take his place for a little, see what happens. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 11, 2015 -> 09:55 PM) Once again the Hawks have a goalie and defense issue. Needs to be addressed. Some ugly defense and turnovers tonight. Given how they played, feel very lucky to have 2 points on this home stand so far. -
Charles Barkley declares war with SABR nerds/quants

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 11, 2015 -> 02:15 PM) I think you're illustrating the key point here, which is that this isn't a matter of a team choosing GOING SABR or STAYING OLD SCHOOL. The reality is that sabermetric research has already infiltrated the game, in that it affects every team in some way. There are certainly teams that rely more on it than others, but the best concepts have risen to the top. And this was never really about the stats themselves, but rather about the ideas that the math is uncovering. This stuff has been adopted; it has not replaced anything. Billy Beane didn't fire all his scouts. This was never about rigidly employing a mutually exclusive approach, it was just about looking to the fringes to find new ideas to integrate into the system. The "us vs. them" civil war that has ensued in the public sphere can be attributed ENTIRELY to the media, the center of which was Michael Lewis' "based on a true story" Moneyball effort. The new Dodgers GM that Freidman hired, he was a MIT grad with zero baseball experience, your ultimate "Sabr" guy. Now as time has passed and he has spent more time in baseball, I read he recently admitted that he has been trusting scouts just as much, if not more than the numbers. It's not about one way or the other, it's about making the baseball team possible using every available resource.
