All New Soccer Thread ~ All Levels ~ All Leagues
Randomly ended up watching live the penalty shootout in the African Cup with Ivory Coast vs. Ghana. Ended up going 11 rounds, the Ivorian goalie blocked a shot from the other goalie, then scored the winning goal, doesn't get much better than that. First African title for them in 23 years, seems like they always underachieve, especially in the World Cup.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Feb 8, 2015 -> 07:52 PM) uh... nope. steroids don't make a bad player a superstar They can make an average player a superstar. Ortiz, Sosa, Piazza, etc.

Vacation/Travel Thread.
We went to Madrid 3 years ago, I loved it, it was awesome. Don't have any specific recommendations, but can tell you an idea of what we liked. -All over the city there are 'plazas",find one on the map, usually you can find some good restaurants and tapa places around there - The subway system works great, it goes everywhere and runs like every 5 minutes, very easy to figure out too - We saw one of the flamenco shows, that was really cool. We just found a random club where they perform, I will try to see if I can remember where it was.

Very rarely do those two make any sense, just ignore them

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 8, 2015 -> 06:35 PM) The transformation for Bautista, from what I understand, is solely due to a change in approach and swing mechanics. Basically, he was taught to be a complete/opposite-field type hitter his whole career, but when he failed and got to Toronto, they just told him to let it rip every time, figuring he didn't have much to lose at that point. Turned out he was a natural slugger trying to be something he never was. I think David Ortiz has a similar story. Neither of them have anything to do with advanced/traditional stats at all. I don't think there exists any type of model that can predict shifts in performance based on radical changes to approach/arsenal. You forgot the word "steroids"

Anytime I've paid attention to a Maryland game, they just seem so unimpressive.

Hawks win! End this rough road trip 4-3, which ain't bad given how badly they played at home. Let the 8=game home stand begin

All Star host selection to mimic Super Bowl
Well there are 30 teams in the league and the Sox have an older park, so I don't think they were close to getting it in the old system either

Help! Pro baseball player search
Baseball Reference would be your best bet. I typed in Mack Thomas to the search engine, two "Thomas Mack" minor leaguers showed up, but one played in 1912-1913 and the other in 1940, so not your guy. Maybe he went by a different full name?

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Feb 6, 2015 -> 10:05 PM) Hawks win in OT 2-1. Huge win to get them over the snide on Winnipeg. Kane with 2 more points and is tied for the league in points. Could be the MVP this year.... Hate to use the term "big win" with 30 games left, but that was huge, they needed that. After the Sunday morning showdown vs. STL, they play 8 straight games at home.

2014-2015 NBA thread
QUOTE (Boogua @ Feb 6, 2015 -> 09:18 PM) They're a very good regular season team. Great teamwork and lots of effort. I don't see them doing much in the playoffs though. I can't think of any teams making or winning the finals without a hall of famer on their roster. Maybe the mid 2000s Pistons, but I think a guy or two makes the hall off those teams That's what I thought when I was looking at the roster, but I thought maybe I was missing a superstar breakout season. Although if you are gonna be a "chemistry" team, the East nowadays is a good place to do it.

Serious question from a casual NBA observer. How is Atlanta so good? I look over their roster and it doesn't seem special at all. What am I missing?

QUOTE (shipps @ Feb 4, 2015 -> 05:30 PM) So Danny Mac turned down the multi year offer from the Score to come back. Kinda glad he isnt coming back but I will just hate it if Kap and Haugh are the second option then I would have rather had Mac. They gave him a multi-year offer? Do they think listeners really want to listen to a guy bragging about the classic rock he listens to in his basement man-cave? Someone compared CFB coaching hires to "dating in a small town", but the radio business is so much worse.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 6, 2015 -> 01:29 PM) I wouldn't have minded Peavy's attitude at all if he'd been able to back up his talk. He talked a huge game, seemed like he'd never shut up, and then didn't do that much when given the ball. I got sick of reading quotes about how he'd be better and they'd be a strong team because Peavy wouldn't be contributing. JFP became "Just f***ing Pitch" with that. This is such a good post, I am gonna have to steal it as my sig. Sums up my thoughts on JFP to a T

Tonight should be interesting. Coming off the first back-to-back shutouts since 2006. Varlamov Hutchinson is 3-0 vs. the Hawks this year with a 1.00 GAA and .971 SV%.

2015-16 NCAA Football Thread
With signing day behind us, and all of the early draft entries announced, time to look ahead to next year. Would any QB in the country make the top 3 on Ohio State's depth chart? How many more ways will Tim Beckman embarass himself? Will the juggernaut SEC East finally let Mizzou win a game or two? Will Kirk Ferentz be offered a lifetime contract if he wins 7 games?
