  1. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 01:19 PM) Why would the Phillies do that? Because they seemingly are always trying to get older and older
  2. QUOTE (bulokis @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 12:46 PM) Kyle Beach traded to the Rangers. The dream is over...
  3. If OSU & FSU win tomorrow, they will have had the 2nd & 3rd easiest schedules of all 32 teams to make the BCS title game. 2012 Notre Dame actually had the 6th toughest. link
  4. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 12:00 PM) I would still take him. The guy had one bad year, otherwise has had pretty good offenses. He was in the top 10 in points and yards almost every year. Is it Kubiak's fault that Schaub is Carson Palmer 2.0 or is it Schaub's fault?
  5. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 11:20 AM) Now throw in that Ronaldo guy. f***. Honduras stole our group!
  6. Class Act? LOL This is a class act: http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=90610
  7. 10 years, $240 million for Cano, official according to Heyman & Enrique Rojas. Maybe Boras could have gotten more, but I would say job well done by Jay-Z
  8. Sources are claiming that Cano & the Mariners were close to a 9/$225 deal, but at the end Jay-Z tried to up the deal to 10/$250, and the Seattle FO people balked and were not happy at all.
  9. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 08:17 AM) World Cup Draw Day! Come on Switzerland/Algeria/Greece! I am mentally preparing myself for Mexico to get SUI/ALG/GRE and for the US to get Netherlands/Ivory Coast/Germany
  10. Chris Peterson leaving the smurf turf for Seattle. UW may have ended up better off with Sark leaving. (And it appears they did CALL Gary Pinkel like I predicted )
  11. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 08:30 PM) Any good shows on HBO, Showtime, or Cinemax not named Homeland, Game of Throws, East Bound and Down, Shamless, or Masters of Sex? lol Boardwalk Empire Ja'mie : Private School Girl
  12. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 08:42 PM) I mean whatever this isn't the NBA. We have 25 players, we can afford for one to be a "flake". Right? If someone is gonna be showing up late, it might as well be a reliever who wont be needed right away anyway. Right?
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 08:24 PM) Those were last-ditch, desperation measures. I meant those "mid-tier" or under the radar acquisitions in the $2-8 million range, whether it's pitching or hitting. Ramirez and Damon were already done well before they got to Tampa. And then those "mid-tier" players get paid somewhere else and suck again. It is impressive.
  14. It's so impressive to be so forgiving and generous after being locked up for 30+ years. RIP.
  15. QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 07:25 PM) I like the signing. Power arm and they have club control until 2016 without giving out the terrible multi-year reliever deals that usually are terrible. I know he was erratic at times, but this club has been able to solve a lot of those problems when they bring in similar guys. Under club control until 2016? Solid move then, give him a chance, see what you can do with him. Maybe he figures it out and you can trade him for something if you still aren't competing.
  16. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 05:12 PM) Man, f*** Metra and/or the BNSF. Their service history blows. On top of being routinely late, at least 5 times a year some massive problem halts the entire system for hours at a time, including tonight. And it always seems to happen right at rush hour. The worst Metra problem is when some asshole steps in front of one. No trains move for about two or three hours because they have to scrape him off the tracks, then do a full police report. If you are gonna kill yourself, don't f*** up everyone else's day.
  17. QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 03:10 PM) Yes, you have an emergency backup in Dunn. I'm suggesting the team wants a no pressure situation to protect their biggest investment. Around July when Abrue has already played his usual full season, I can see having Konerko would be a good thing. I agree with Balta there is a chance they will mismanage the situation. But in bringing Abreu up to MLB levels having the most flexibility, including him resting for a couple games, is a great tool. I see signing Paulie as being 90% about Abreu and 10% Konerko. Abreu has never topped 400 abs in a season. Having him jump to 600+ and lpaying no matter what is possibly not the smartest move for the future of the franchise. And that "emergency" backup started 51 games at 1b in 2012 & 70 games at 1b in 2013. I think he can handle backing up Abreu.
  18. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 02:42 PM) Also, if I'm Jameis Winston and I truly was innocent, I'd make it a point to sue this person for defamation of character. Apparently she will be filing a civil suit against him.
  19. QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 02:26 PM) And if Abreu is forced to play because there is not a decent backup that too can stunt his development. He has never had more than 400 ABs in a season. Now you are asking him to make over 600. I'm not a math guy but that looks like his regular season and another half season on top. Having a competent back up seems like insurance to bring him along at whatever pace necessary. If that means Paulie sits, it has been made clear Paulie will sit. If that means Paulie has to play some at 1st, well there is an ok option. As I see this, more and more, I see it as the team wanting flexibillity to do what is best for Abreu and to protect their biggest investment. This season isn't a contending year, so protect your assets. And one of the top assets is Abreu. You already have a backup 1b in Dunn. You can then fill the DH spot with one of your OFs or 3B options.
  20. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 01:41 PM) I still don't understand why this matters. The White Sox gave a huge contract to Abreu, Hahn and Konerko have both said he's going to be a part time player. I believe you are insinuating that Konerko is going to get the majority of playing time. He's not. No, I realize that Abreu will get the majority of playing time. But if he starts 120 games instead of 140 simply because Konerko wants one more go around is silly and could stunt Abreu's development and adjustment to the majors.
  21. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 12:56 PM) Adam Dunn? QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 09:04 AM) Yup, just slightly behind Donnie Veal.
  22. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 11:57 AM) By June, there sure was. Anybody would have been an upgrade over Dunn at that point in time. Huh? That has nothing do with what I'm trying to say. Had the Sox signed Jim Thome as a JR "loyalty" move two weeks after signing Dunn, that would be a more similar situation to signing PK right now.
  23. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 11:08 AM) I don't even know what that first sentence means. Second sentence is irrelevant. I know you'd rather think Abreu fits in the category of Santiago/Anderson and some others, but he just doesn't. Look at Dunn in 2011. He was so bad, that really just about any bat would have been better - and they kept playing him most of the season anyway. There is your example. It means there was no one similar to take away at-bats from Dunn, so it's not a valid comparison. You had two 1b/DH guys, one lefty and one righty. Now you have three 1b/DH guys, one lefty and two righties.
  24. QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 10:17 AM) Royals get Norichika Aoki from Milwaukee for LP Will Smith. Don't know much about Smith, but Aoki is a decent player, good addition for KC. Wonder if that takes them out of the Beltran stakes.
  25. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 10:07 AM) It is paranoia because none of those examples is the slightest bit like Abreu. You want a good comp? Because there is one on the team - his name is Adam Dunn. Dunn was signed as a free agent 1B/DH for 4/56. Abreu was signed as a free agent 1B/DH for 6/68, so even more years and money. Now, Dunn started 2011 OK, had his illness and surgery, then came back terrible. Stayed terrible throughout the year - like epic-level terrible. And it wasn't until very late in the season they even started to cut back his play, and that was by just a little bit. And he still came back as a starter the next year. That is what you should use as the analog here. Abreu would need to be epically, historically bad, and even then his playing time won't diminish much until very late in the year. Who was the Sox legend in 2011 that was also a left-handed hitting 1B/DH just like Adam Dunn on the roster? Were there 3 guys on the 2011 roster that could only play 1b/DH?
